Herbal Support for Immune Health

Herbal Support for Immune Health

This episode kicks off the month of November and our immunity talk. Coincidentally I am recording with a head cold, so apologies for the quality. Immune support is not just selecting immune modulating herbs. There are so many herbs with so many ways they can be incorporated depending on how they are prepared, there is always an herb for someone but herbs are not a 1 size fits all. This is why energetics knowledge and working with a trained herbalist is important for proper support. Remember, Herbalist work in tandem with doctors and other health care providers as part of your wellness team!

Myths & Misconceptions - herbalism, fitness and nutrition

Myths & Misconceptions - herbalism, fitness and nutrition

Dropping knowledge this week with some myths or misconceptions in fitness and holistic wellness industries!
.
Protein, fats, and carbs, oh my! Trying to eat healthily might feel like navigating a foreign land where you are unsure who to trust or which road to follow. Danielle discusses why research is necessary but listening to your body is best.
.
Paula discusses herbalism as a career path, what to expect from an herbalist, how long to store herbs, why green tea makes you jittery, and when foraging herbs or wild foods may become an issue.
.
An excellent application for foraging in your city is fallingfruit.org, a worldwide app where people list wild foods they have found, kind of like geocaching for herb nerds!
.
Unsurprisingly, The history of early American anti-foraging laws reveals that supporters of restricting foraging rights typically grounded their efforts in racism, classism, colonialism, imperialism, or some combination of these cruel practices and beliefs.
.
1. Anti-Foraging Laws Targeting Native Americans
.
Native American tribes were probably the earliest victims of anti-foraging laws in the New World. Shortly after English settlers landed in the New World, they began pushing the Powhatan Native American tribe off their traditional hunting and foraging grounds. These settlers defended their newly occupied “property” with arms. As more and more white settlers arrived in America over generations, the foraging practices of many Native Americans—or, more specifically, their status as hunter-gatherers, as opposed to agricultural practitioners—was used to justify driving them from lands they had historically occupied.
.
2. Anti-Foraging Laws Targeting African Americans
.
After the Civil War, plantation owners in the American South moved forcefully and systematically to restrict the foraging rights and practices of newly freed African American slaves. Many slaves freed after the Civil War understandably sought to leave farm work—and the farmers who had enslaved them—behind. As they had before the Civil War, freed slaves earned money by selling foods they foraged and hunted. In addition to income, foraging provided African Americans with some degree of self-sufficiency.
.
New York City parks officials have long taken a dim view of foragers in city parks. A forager caught in New York City could face fines of up to $250. However, the city has, in most cases, opted in favor of education and discouraging foragers over issuing fines.
But there are exceptions, such as the 1986 arrest of Central Park forager Steve Brill. Brill, a New Yorker who goes by the moniker “Wildman,” was arrested in a sting operation carried out by city officials. Brill was arrested for leading paid foraging tours in New York City’s Central Park. Brill’s “crime” was described as “snatching and eating dandelion greens from the meadows of Central Park.” The city’s parks commissioner at the time, Henry Stern, said he “couldn’t stomach the idea of anyone ‘eating our parks.” Brill’s arrest and subsequent trial was “a public relations debacle for the parks department” and made news in more than a dozen national and international newspapers. Ultimately, the city dropped the charges against Brill after he agreed to lead his foraging tours as an employee of the city’s Parks Department, which he did for several years.

Herb Cycle Syncing and Nutrition Timing

Herb Cycle Syncing and Nutrition Timing

In today's episode we delve into breaking down the female cycle, what herbs can support your body during these changes, and how to incorporate nutrition timing into your health and wellness journey.

Did you know that a woman's hormone cycle can be broken down into four parts over 28 days!? Paula walks us through each phase of our cycle, how that could effect us energetically or emotionally, and which herbs we can use to best support each phase. If you would like to skip ahead to the herbal section for each phase we start around 31 minutes of the show.

Within the fitness world there are a lot of opinions on Nutrition Timing. When is the best time to eat after a workout? How much should you eat? What should you eat? Sometimes the answer is simpler than you may realize.

PS- We had a VERY energetic puppy in the recording room today. Please disregard any noises or breaks in the recording.

Common Kettlebell Mistakes and Herbs for Joint Health

In today's episode Danielle and Paula will talk about common kettlebell mistakes and herbs that support joint health. Kettlebells are only gaining in popularity, but that doesn't necessarily mean everyone is executing them right.  Keeping with our kettlebell theme and our upcoming even on July 11th, 2021, we wanted to really zone in on common mistakes made during the Kettlebell Swing.   And with total body movements, such as the swing, there is a large demand on the joints.  So rather than applying some generic topical ointment, let Paula show you which herbs can support joint health and how to apply them within your life.  One of the main herbs mentioned on the episode is Willow bark.   Follow the link below for our Southern Oregon Kettlebell and Tea event July 11, 2021 https://botanicallycurious.com/workshops-%26-experiences Contact us: Paula: @botanically_curious Danielle: @daniellemcrease Bands & Botanicals: @Bandsandbotanicals

Workout Recovery and Herbal Support

Workout Recovery and Herbal Support

In today’s episode, we discuss our route to recovery. If you are a person who doesn’t put much effort or thought into your recovery plan, you may start to see the adverse effects of this in the gym. Listen in for tactics you can incorporate easily to make your next workout a strong one!

Hydrate, sleep, and stretch! If you aren’t doing these core recovery practices, it is time to start.

Inflammation is a big buzz word when talking about recovery but not all inflammation is the same. Choosing herbs based on the energetics of your body is important.

When choosing herbs for recovery focus on:

1. The goal- what are you trying to support in the body ?
2. Energetics of your body, is the natural state hot, cold, tense? Maybe damp?
3. Herbal affinity drivers- where is the healing going to happen?

Some Herbs mentioned :

Wild lettuce Lactuca virosa , wild lettuce is often referred to as “opium lettuce” due to its purported pain-relieving qualities! It is a plant in the Lactuca genus; the extract is often ingested for its mild analgesic and sedative effects.

Marshmallow root is rich in both polysaccharides and starch. When made using the cold infusion method, the healing polysaccharides are the primary component that gets extracted.

Self-heal has a mildly bitter taste and is cooling and drying to the body. The physical body acts as an astringent, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, mild antiseptic, detoxifier, diuretic, hemostatic, and vulnerary (a substance used to help heal external wounds).

Energetics part 2: Resilience building Adaptogens & knowing the “Why” to setting up workouts

Energetics part 2: Resilience building Adaptogens & knowing the “Why” to setting up workouts

Today we are talking about Herbal Energetics and how we can create programs and workouts for success!  Did you know that there are constitutions connected to our body, the herb itself, and the ailment you may be trying to alleviate?  Whether you are new to herbal medicine, or just need a little refresher, today we reintroduce four foundational constitutions to keep into consideration, as well as three new herbs for your herbal tool box.   For example, depending on the herb you take, you may find that the herb increases your normal heat or dryness, making you feel unpleasant, or the herb can soothe your standard constitution. .  We also discuss (bands) Danielle's strategies when creating workouts for Paula ( botanicals)!  Did you know when creating a workout you should keep into consideration the clients work and hobbies?  Why would you need to know that? For one, an individuals job can be an insight into the daily movement patterns of the body, and further more, general compensations that may be commonly associated with those jobs.   For example, if you are a construction worker, or a painter your body may fall into a pattern of repetitive overhead motion.  Even more so, you may be relying on one side of the body to stabilize and execute most of the movement, creating an imbalance in the body.  These are important factors to keep into consideration when thinking of your client, or yourself.   Join us, as we delve deeper into these two worlds, bringing them closer together for a healthier YOU!

Back to Basics - Herbal Energetics part 1 & Movement for long term growth

Back to Basics - Herbal Energetics part 1 & Movement for long term growth

On today’s episode we discuss the “basics”. Starting off on the right foot for the new year and herbal energetics. Herbal terminology is vast, but one term you will hear often is “energetics.” Energetics has a threefold meaning in herbalism, describing the energetic properties of an herb as it acts on the body, the energetic qualities of a condition or imbalance, and the energetics of a person, also sometimes referred to as their constitution.

Biggest loser with Kristi McCart

Biggest loser with Kristi McCart

Today's episode has us chatting with Kristi McCart.  Kristi is a lawyer, a wife, a mother, and a contestant on the 18th season of The Biggest Loser!!   We all have a catalyst and a turning point in our lives where we commit to something different, something bigger.  Kristi not only committed to changing her life, but she committed herself to doing it in front of millions of people and allowing those people to embark on the journey with her.   Kristi had to make the hard choice to leave her young son, her husband, and her home, to commit to the person she wanted to be.  She succeeded through physical ailments, emotional rollercoasters, and the pressure of changing your life.   On this episode, Kristi opens up about those struggles and successes both on and off the show in a funny, honest, and refreshing way.  We are also lucky enough to get some great advice on how to stay committed when things are less than ideal (HELLO PANDEMIC GYM SHUT DOWN!!), how to shake the guilt off of self care, and how to create lasting change!  KEEP AN EYE OUT for Kristi on her Instagram Live, @Kristi_with_the_good_hair, the first Friday of every month where she sits with Katie, a Licensed Dietitian from The Biggest Loser, as they debunk nutrition myths and what it's really like to visit a dietitian.  "First Fridays" starts January 1st!
