US government approves use of world’s first vaccine for honeybees, Vegas circus show company buys tiny California desert town, Twitter eases ban on political ads

The world’s first vaccine for honeybees has been approved for use by the US government, raising hopes of a new weapon against diseases that routinely ravage colonies that are relied upon for food pollination. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has granted a conditional license for a vaccine created by Dalan Animal Health, a US biotech company, to help protect honeybees from American foulbrood disease. The vaccine, which will initially be available to commercial beekeepers, aims to curb foulbrood, a serious disease caused by the bacterium Paenibacillus larvae that can weaken and kill hives. There is currently no cure for the disease, which in parts of the US has been found in a quarter of hives, requiring beekeepers to destroy and burn any infected colonies and administer antibiotics to prevent further spread. When a successful Las Vegas company known for its entertainment and adult-themed shows looks to expand, one might think of New York City, Los Angeles, London or Paris. But just like the mind-bending absurdity of some of its acts — it chose the tiny town of Nipton, California, to expand — population 15 (or 20 depending on who you ask). Spiegelworld, the company that produces Absinthe at Caesars Palace, the Atomic Saloon Show at The Venetian, and OPM at Cosmopolitan has confirmed it is the buyer of Nipton, which is located in San Bernardino County’s Ivanpah Valley roughly 12 miles southeast of Primm, Nevada.  More than three years ago, Twitter prohibited political and issue-based ads amid broader concerns that politicians could pay to target social media users with false or misleading information. Now, under its new owner Elon Musk, the company is easing that ban, in a move that could provide Twitter a much-needed sales boost at a time when Musk is urgently searching for new revenue streams. But it comes with some risks: the policy change could expose users to threats the company has previously said it may not be able to address, including spreading AI-created deep fakes and other sophisticated attempts to manipulate the platform. Twitter employees bring their own toilet paper as Elon Musk cuts costs, Fans raise $1M for Bills’ Hamlin’s toy drive after injury, Desktop GPU Sales Hit 20-Year Low

Before the start of 2023, Twitter CEO Elon Musk made several cuts and changes to the platform and staff since his takeover. Some of these changes are now allegedly causing a literal stink. Twitter’s remaining employees are having to bring their own toilet paper to the platform’s San Francisco headquarters, according to the New York Times. Along with firing janitors at Twitter’s New York City offices, according to the Times, Musk has attempted to cut costs across the company. Measures included not paying rent in San Francisco, which has led to Twitter being sued for not paying $136,260 in rent money, according to CBS News. Musk has also limited the number of floors used by Twitter in San Francisco from four to two, the Times reported. The newspaper also said Twitter will close its Seattle offices as it faces eviction. Twitter Seattle employees were previously demanded to work from home despite Musk’s in-person work directive, according to the Seattle Times. Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin was taken off the field in an ambulance Monday night after suffering an injury while tackling Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. In the aftermath of the terrifying event, fans showed their support for Hamlin by donating to a toy drive he set up in 2020. Desktop GPU Sales Hit 20-Year Low. The industry shipped around 6.9 million standalone graphics boards for desktop PCs — including the best graphics cards for gaming — and a similar number of discrete GPUs for notebooks in the third quarter. In total, AMD, Intel, and Nvidia shipped around 14 million standalone graphics processors for desktops and laptops, down 42% year-over-year based on data.

Southwest cancels 5,400 flights in a 'full-blown meltdown', Insect protein maker to build second US facility, California teen arrested in bogus parking ticket scheme

A historic winter storm has tangled holiday travel and brought dangerous conditions to a big chunk of the United States, but no airline has struggled more to navigate the Christmas holiday rush than Southwest Airlines.  Insect protein producer Ynsect plans to construct a large-scale farm project beginning in late 2023. The new facility will expand the company’s sustainable, carbon-negative production capabilities that convert Molitor and Buffalo mealworms into fertilizer for plants, oils for consumption by pets and livestock, and protein for humans. “Mealworm protein is the only one in the world available on the market that can combine not only performance and health, but also natural origin and sustainability,” said Antoine Hubert, chief executive officer of Ynsect. “Insect protein is more sustainable and will open a new mode of food development that is efficient, nutritious and capable of positively impacting the food chain at multiple points.” Ynsect’s project marks the company’s second US facility, following the opening of its Nebraska site in March 2022, and its fifth globally, with two locations in France and another in The Netherlands. A teenager has been arrested for allegedly issuing fake parking tickets near the beach in Santa Cruz, the Santa Cruz Police Department said. Damian Vela, a 19-year-old Watsonville resident, was arrested around 4 p.m. last Thursday when police say he admitted to the crime but denied receiving any payments. The scam citations had a QR code that led potential victims to a website for payment. As of Friday afternoon, it is unclear how many fake citations were issued or how many victims paid the “bogus citations,” police said. At the time of Vela’s arrest, police also searched his vehicle and found evidence used in the scam. Vela was booked into jail for “unlawful use of a computer system and attempted fraud.”

NASA Mars lander InSight falls silent after 4 years, Federal law enforcement warns of danger to electrical grid, Uber Eats released its yearly food cravings report

It could be the end of the red dusty line for NASA’s InSight lander, which has fallen silent after four years on Mars. InSight landed on Mars in 2018 and was the first spacecraft to document a marsquake. It detected more than 1,300 marsquakes with its French-built seismometer, including several caused by meteoroid strikes. The most recent marsquake sensed by InSight, earlier this year, left the ground shaking for at least six hours, according to NASA. While many people are taking time off for the holidays, suspected criminals have not pressed pause on targeting the electric grid. A new federal law enforcement memo warns of three suspected arsons at energy facilities in Hawaii. Uber Eats is the latest company to share its yearly summary detailing the most popular takeout trends, delivery combos and unique delivery requests it received this year. For 2022’s most popular takeout trends, Uber Eats shared that people preferred non-alcoholic drinks more than alcoholic, didn’t want ranch dressing as much compared to previous years, and saw a spike in convenience store orders for Klondike’s Choco Taco ice cream, which was discontinued earlier this year.

King Tide waves to hit Orange County beaches, Crumbl Cookies violated child labor laws in 6 states, Santa Barbara’s most recommended restaurant is a Little Caesars

Forecasters are calling for large King Tide surf to hit the Orange County coast this week. The larger than average waves are expected to arrive Wednesday with the largest tides reaching over 7 feet by Friday and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service says the surf will be at its highest between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. The big surf is expected to impact several areas along the Orange County coast, including the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach and Sunset Beach. Crumbl Cookies, a Utah-based franchise of cookie bakeries, has violated child labor regulations in six states, affecting 46 minor-aged workers, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. A federal investigation into the child labor violations found that 11 operators in six states allowed young employees, “many 14 and 15 years of age,” to work more than the law permits or in “hazardous or prohibited occupations,” a press release states. The affluent city of Santa Barbara is known as the American Riviera. Its sprawling south-facing beaches are dotted with luxury hotels and its hills to the north are home to some of the world’s most famous people. It’s also one of the most popular destinations for tourists from neighboring cities who want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and relax in one of the most beautiful places in America. So as a major tourist hub that has an economy that relies heavily on hospitality, why is a budget pizza chain one of the most recommended restaurants in the city? It all started on the social media site Reddit.---- There are subreddits dedicated to cities, one of which is /r/SantaBarbara. The idea of a city subreddit is, in its purest form, a place for locals to discuss the day-to-day events of the city, squabble over decisions made by city politicians, complain about the cost of rent or just reminisce about the “good ol’ days” before the city was ruined by this or that.---- Well because anyone can post in these subreddits, there’s also a heavy dose of non-locals asking residents for advice on how to spend their time and money in the city. With a city as popular as Santa Barbara, posts by tourists asking locals to essentially plan their trips for them were becoming an annoyance.---The Milpas corridor in Santa Barbara is one of the city’s less affluent neighborhoods, with working class residents and a large grouping of the city’s fast food locations. It’s a far cry from the Montecito, Hope Ranch and Mesa neighborhoods. It was meant to be an absurdist idea: an outsider looking for a fancy night out with their friend or significant other is encouraged to visit a pizza shop known for $5 pre-cooked pizzas in a lower-income neighborhood. But the inside joke caught on like wildfire. So if you’re looking for a recommendation of where to eat on a night out in Santa Barbara, and you don’t feel like doing any of the research yourself, ask a local. The only answer is Little Caesars on Milpas.

San Bernardino County to consider leaving California, 3 Southern California cities seeing the most growth in the nation, California’s most-searched for holiday song

San Bernardino County to consider leaving California, 3 Southern California cities seeing the most growth in the nation, California’s most-searched for holiday song

The November elections saw Californians continue to embrace progressive leadership, but voters in one of the state’s most populous counties are so frustrated with this political direction that they voted to consider seceding and forming their own state. An advisory ballot proposal approved in San Bernardino County — home to 2.2 million people — directs local officials to study the possibility of secession. The razor-thin margin of victory is the latest sign of political unrest and economic distress in California.  As housing and living costs remain unaffordable for many living in Los Angeles, new data shows plenty of residents are migrating to more affordable locales. A new SmartAsset study shows the migration trend to more affordable cities has created a series of “boomtowns” across America. These cities saw the largest increase in population, income and available housing over a five-year period from 2016-2021. Three Southern California cities in particular saw the largest growth. Christmas songs have taken over the airways, at least until New Year’s Eve, if not longer. The “most wonderful time of the year” often results in people singing along to their favorite Christmas songs, whether it’s a classic hit like “This Christmas” by Donny Hathaway or the divisive fan-favorite song “All I want for Christmas” by Mariah Carey. A study from Verizon Specials determined which Christmas song was the most searched for in each state.  Researchers determined the ranking using Semrush, an online marketing platform, to determine the top 10 Christmas songs with the most search volume and Google Trends data.

Airlines are lobbying for a change to federal regulations that could put one pilot in the cockpit, 18-year-old college student elected mayor, Wordle players break streaks to support NYT walkout

In the airline business, there are two cost factors the airlines can never control: fuel and labor. And as technology improves — and pilot salaries increase — there's been a controversial move lately by the industry to try to amend what's known as part 121 of the Federal Aviation Regulations. That's the federal air regulation that requires air carriers to have two pilots in the cockpit at all times. The airlines have been quietly lobbying that the single-pilot approach would quickly solve the staffing problem caused by the pilot shortage and that technology has vastly improved to allow for safe operation of a single-pilot flight. An 18-year-old college student has been elected to serve as mayor of a small east Arkansas city, becoming one of the youngest people to serve as a city’s top leader in the U.S. Jaylen Smith, was elected mayor of Earle in Tuesday’s runoff election, winning 235 to 183. The Times Guild, a union representing a variety of employees at the New York Times, staged a one-day walkout as part of a high-profile contract bargaining process in which the union and the newspaper’s management have been unable to come to agreement on issues such as compensation, remote work and health care. The union asked readers to avoid interacting with Times content on that day — including avoiding the Times’ mega-popular word game, Wordle. For Wordle players, skipping a day could mean breaking their winning streak, a sacrifice some were willing to make. “Read local news. Listen to public radio. Pull out a cookbook. Break your Wordle streak,” the Guild tweeted.

The top trending Google searches of 2022 in Los Angeles, Elon Musk taking legal action over Twitter account that tracks his private jet, New FTX CEO is getting paid $1,300 an hour,

Web searches for gas, cats, and remote work opportunities top Google’s Year in Search recap list for Los Angeles. The search engine company compiled data from the L.A. region to give residents a glimpse into the most searched-for web inquiries on the website. With high gas prices throughout the year, L.A. residents searched for “gas prices near me” twice as much compared to last year.  The Google search topped this year’s top 10 trending “near me” searches for the L.A. region this year as well. Elon Musk says he is taking legal action against the holder of a Twitter account that tracks his private jet, arguing it put his son at risk. The @ElonJet account, which has more than half a million followers, was suspended on Wednesday. Its owner Jack Sweeney, 20, used publicly available flight-tracking information to tweet every time Mr Musk's jet took off and landed. FTX CEO John J. Ray is leaning on a team that he’s grown to know over years of bankruptcy restructurings, and the company is paying them millions for the work that they’re doing to unpack FTX’s tangled morass of accounts and shoddy records. Ray and his top team are not like typical employees who work directly for the company. Instead, like bankers and lawyers who are working on the bankruptcy proceedings, the new leadership team is professional independent contractors. That means, among other things, that they get paid immediately, before any FTX investors receive recompense for their losses. According to court filings, the new FTX CEO will collect $1,300 hourly plus “reasonable expenses” for his work. That works out to an annualized $2.6 million, assuming Ray works a standard 40-hour workweek for 50 weeks over a year, allowing for two weeks of unpaid vacation.

San Pablo to Crack Down on Front Yard Parking, Dungeness crab season delayed — again, Downtown San Diego residents: rat population is 'exploding'

In San Pablo, residents could face fines for violating a city ordinance, prohibiting cars, boats, trailers, or motorcycles from parking on front or side yards or in areas impacting the public’s right of way.  For the third time this year, commercial fishing season for dungeness crab has been delayed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, this time through at least the end of the year. The decision to delay the beginning of commercial dungeness crab season was spurred due to the risk and dangers of humpback whales becoming entangled in fishing lines. Downtown San Diego residents said they've seen a major uptick of rats in recent months. Show sponsored by The Tiffany Granath Podcast! Advice Radio for Relationships, Life, Sex and everything else. Elon Musk turns Twitter into 'hotel' for staff, Philadelphia Dairy-Free Cream Cheese is Spreading Across the U.S., Amazon users can say ‘Alexa, Thank My Driver’ to give each driver $5

Elon Musk turns Twitter into 'hotel' for staff. Work from home? Nope. Live at work? Oh yes! Earlier this year, Philadelphia brand ironically launched their first plant-based cream cheese alternative in the U.K. Well, I’m happy to say that Philadelphia dairy-free cream cheese has come home, and is now available in the U.S. However, it’s quite different from the version across the pond. The packaging looks similar, but the shmear on the inside has a recipe all its own. During the holidays, delivery drivers work as hard as Santa’s elves to get packages distributed on time. This December, Amazon users can not only thank their drivers personally but also tip while doing so. Show sponsored by The Tiffany Granath Podcast! HLN Gutted by CNN Layoffs, People leaving Los Angeles are now flocking to these two cities, Hellmann’s Wants You to Put Mayo in Your Eggnog This Holiday Season

HLN Gutted by CNN Layoffs. CNN is breaking news — but not in the way it usually does. The Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet it cutting into many of its operations in a bid to save money, which will result in a smaller employee base and less original programming, the result of broader cost controls that have continued at the parent company since it merged Discovery Communications with WarnerMedia. Some of the moves include ending one of the nation’s longest-running morning programs and paring back on the number of non-staff contributors utilized on air. As a record amount of Los Angeles residents continue moving out of the state, a new Redfin study shows they’re flocking to two particular cities the most. Droves of people migrated out of California during the pandemic, heading for more affordable locales. The places seeing the largest exoduses were coastal cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, Boston, Washington D.C. and more, according to Redfin. Hellmann’s Wants You to Put Mayo in Your Eggnog This Holiday Season. Yes, egg is only the third ingredient in Hellmann's mayonnaise, behind oil and water. However, America's best-selling mayo still believes that's plenty of egg to give you a perfectly acceptable nog — and it's created its own mayo-nog to prove it. South Dakota governor bans TikTok, California’s state quarter could be worth $11, San Francisco debates letting police deploy robots that kill

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem is taking a stand against the popular social media app TikTok. The governor signed an executive order last week that bans the use of the app for state government agencies, employees and contractors on state devices. That means those using state-owned or licensed devices cannot download the TikTok app or visit the website. Your state quarter could be worth a lot more than just 25 cents. The U.S. Mint State Quarters were created from 1999 to 2008, with coins for five states released each year. Those coins have one of three markings — “D,” “P” or “S” — which signifies where they were minted. Silver-proof coins, which are made of 90% silver, change in value depending on the current price of silver, according to Nationwide Coin & Bullion Reserve. Supervisors in San Francisco held a heated debate last week over whether to give city police the ability to use potentially lethal, remote-controlled robots in emergency situations, with both sides accusing the other of reckless fearmongering. The Supreme Court will hear a dispute over a dog toy that got whiskey maker Jack Daniel's barking mad. The company that makes Jack Daniel's had filed a lawsuit over a squeaking dog toy that parodies the whiskey's signature bottle, and had asked the justices to hear its case against the manufacturer of the plastic Bad Spaniels toy.  A number of major companies from the makers of Campbell Soup to outdoor brand Patagonia and jeans maker Levi Strauss have urged the justices to take what they say is an important case for trademark law. Evidence of cooking 780,000 years ago rewrites human history. A new study shows that early humans were cooking much further back in history than previously thought. Google reveals which Thanksgiving recipes are popular in your state, IRS says your tax refund may be smaller this year Why plumbers call tomorrow ‘Brown Friday’

It turns out – according to Google’s data – not everyone is planning to make the same types of recipes. The company identified regional specialties, and created a map with the most uniquely searched type of stuffing (or dressing, if that’s what you call it) in each state. While Texans are searching for cornbread dressing, New Yorkers are looking for sausage stuffing recipes, and people in Washington state are looking for stuffing with apples. Meanwhile, Oklahoma residents are looking for “red Jello stuffing.” IRS says your tax refund may be smaller this year. The IRS acknowledged that there were still 3.7 million unprocessed individual returns it received in 2022 as of Nov. 11, as well as 900,000 unprocessed Forms 1040-X for amended tax returns. While shoppers across the U.S. consider the Friday after Thanksgiving Black Friday, plumbers call it “Brown Friday.” Sounds gross, right? Well, it is, but not for the reasons you would expect. Damon Dukakis from UCLA Sports & The Rose Bowl tonight! The price of water skyrockets in California, Michigan State suspends four players, Daniel Radcliffe reveals the 1 note Weird Al gave him on set

Our guest today is the general sales manager for UCLA Sports and the Rose Bowl, Damon Dukakis. Miles of brittle, uprooted almond trees lay dead on their sides on parched farmland in Coalinga, California, as an intensifying drought, new restrictions and skyrocketing water prices are forcing farmers to sacrifice their crops. With the city on track to run out of water by mid- to late November, officials turned to the increasingly expensive open market to make up the difference. They finalized a purchase from a California public irrigation district last week. The city’s price tag for life’s most basic necessity was roughly $1.1 million dollars. Her mommy is too… and I’m speechless! Happy, blessed, and grateful for these incredible experiences that God adds to my life. Here I am! Always loyal to your loyalty. Ready or not, here it comes: the time to turn back your clocks an hour is right around the corner. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 6. But did you know? It’s possible this is one of the last times clocks fall back. On March 15, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Sunshine Protection Act, a bill to make daylight saving time a year-round thing. To become law, the bill would next have to pass in the U.S. House of Representatives and then onto Pres. Joe Biden’s desk for approval.

Chase Shumway is our guest tonight! Las Vegas has a pipeline of big demolitions in the works, Meta's value has plunged by $700 billion, and How your boss might be monitoring you

Las Vegas, with history of casino implosions, has big demolitions coming. It’s too early to say whether the buildings will be torn down Vegas-style — setting off fireworks as onlookers cheer an implosion. But collectively, the current and planned teardowns are a reminder that property owners have often had no qualms about toppling old real estate to build something new in Southern Nevada, an ever-competitive, always-expanding market. Meta shares tumbled 24% on Thursday to its lowest level in nearly four years following an earnings report that one Wall Street analyst described as a "train wreck." Ontario has legislation that now makes it mandatory for companies with more than 25 people to tell employees how they’re monitoring them and why.

San Franciscans flushed with anger over $1.7m public toilet, Burgess Yachts accused of financing the war in Ukraine by helping sanctioned Russian magnates hide their super yachts, Kanye West dropped

San Franciscans flushed with anger over $1.7m public toilet. The current plan is projected to cost $1.7 million, including $300,000 for architecture and engineering fees and $150,000 for construction management fees. Only $750,000 of the $1.7 million is for actual construction costs. Even if approved, the toilet may not be completed until 2025 due to the long planning process. San Francisco is also in the throes of a trash can conundrum as it seeks to put new bins on the streets, with prototypes costing as much as $20,900. Burgess Yachts accused of financing the war in Ukraine by helping sanctioned Russian magnates hide their super yachts. Russian oligarchs and other former Soviet state profiteers are funneling money and assets into foreign countries out of the reach of the counties where the money originates. Kanye West dropped by Hollywood talent agency CAA after his anti-Semitic outbursts. CAA, the prominent Hollywood talent agency, has stopped representing Ye amid a growing call to boycott the rapper formerly known as Kanye West. The agency ended its relationship with Ye this month following his recent anti-Semitic outbursts in various interviews, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly. And... Adidas has finally ended their partnership with Kanye West after his anti-Semitic tirades. A significant amount of his net worth was tied to the deal. According to Forbes, he is no longer a billionaire.

Matthew Perry has a new book out today, and draws criticism after comments he made about Keanu Reeves, 3 Florida men arrested in multimillion-dollar theft ring of stolen meat, & Psychedelics

Actor Matthew Perry draws criticism after comments he made about Keanu Reeves in his forthcoming book are made public. “Why is it that the original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us? River was a better actor than me; I was funnier. But I certainly held my own in our scenes—no small feat, when I look back decades later.” 3 Florida men arrested in multimillion-dollar theft ring of stolen meat across Midwest, authorities say. There have been approximately 45 thefts that have occurred since June 2021.  Psychedelics are being studied to treat depression, addiction, and more. Scientists are investigating how hallucinogenic substances can have a positive effect on people struggling with a range of mental health conditions.

Portland has the worst air quality in the world, a swarm of bees were released on cops, Weed is coming to some gas stations next year

Portland has the worst air quality in the world, a swarm of bees were released on cops, Weed is coming to some gas stations next year

Seattle, Portland have worst air quality in the world due to relentless wildfire smoke. The site IQAir ranked Seattle and Portland as the two worst cities in the world for air quality on Wednesday and Thursday – worse than areas in China and southeastern Asia that usually top the list. Vancouver, British Columbia, in Canada rated among the 10 worst cities. A woman is facing multiple assault charges after allegedly unleashing a swarm of bees on police while they were attempting to serve an eviction notice. “Oh, you’re allergic? Good.” “Chaos ensued and several sheriff’s department employees were stung, including three who are allergic to bee stings, according to the narrative.” I asked my beekeeper friend Wayne the Dog Man about it. Weed is coming to US gas stations next year. Circle K, the global convenience-store chain, signed a deal with Green Thumb Industries, one of the largest US cannabis producers, to sell licensed marijuana at its Florida gasoline retailers. The deal is a global first, given that legal marijuana has so far been sold only in stand-alone dispensaries in the US and within pharmacies in countries such as Uruguay and Germany.
