For this episode we’re sharing a conversation with Margaret Toal, Chair of the Orange County Historical Commission, about her remembrances of Henry Lowe. We’re previewing the upcoming Bayoulands radio episode with a remembrance of jazz guitarist and native Port Arthuran Zachary Breaux who tragically died at the age of 36 while trying to save a swimmer on February 20th, 1997, 26 years ago today.

Gary Stelly: The Voice of Orange

For this episode we’re sharing Jason Miller’s conversation with KOGT radio station owner Gary Stelly who purchased the AM station in 1992 and was known as the Voice of Orange for 30 years until the station’s closing in 2022.

The interview was featured on the premiere season of Bayoulands in 2016 and includes discussion of the history of KOGT and its role in the Orange County community and the origins of the kitschy jingle “Orange, My Home Town.” Stick around after their conversation to hear the song.

For this episode, we’re sharing a conversation with members of the team responsible for the restoration of the Apollo Mission Control Center at Johnson Space Center. Led by the Historic Preservation Officer, Sandra Tetley, the team spoke with Shannon Harris following a session at the Real Places conference hosted by the Texas Historical Commission in early 2019. At the time, the team was working to complete restoration in time for the 50th Anniversary of the first lunar landing.

For this episode, we’re sharing Jason Miller’s recent conversation with southeast Texas native and Lamar University alum, Patrick Patterson, a documentary photographer who recently traveled to the Ukrainian border to document refugees fleeing to Poland. The interview aired on the premier episode of season 6 of the Bayoulands radio series on April 24,  2022.

On this final day of Black History Month, we’re sharing a conversation which aired on the most recent episode of Bayoulands, season 5. An interview from guest contributor Gordon Scott Williams with Willie Knighton, a pioneer in Southeast Texas radio. Known by radio listeners as “Willie K,” Knighton was a disc jockey on KJET, a “sunrise to sunset” station that catered to the African American community in the Golden Triangle for more than 20 years. Knighton was also featured in the recent documentary, “They Will Talk About Us: The Charlton-Pollard Story.” Produced by LUTV Productions, the documentary chronicles the origins of the oldest Black neighborhood in Beaumont, Texas.

For this interview, Jason and Roger focused on one of the major players in the Houston blues scene, the late Clarence Gatemouth Brown.
