Butler Basketball Strength Coach Matthew Johnson: Building Relationships That Last
Matthew Johnson joined the Butler Athletics staff as Men’s Basketball Strength and Conditioning Coach in July of 2018.
In this position, Johnson serves as a member of the men’s basketball staff and oversees the program’s strength and conditioning, while also assisting with rehabilitation of injured student-athletes and working with university partners on nutrition and supplement education.
“Our program takes great pride in the development of our student-athletes, and the addition of Matthew to our staff reinforces that commitment,” said Butler men’s basketball coach LaVall Jordan at the time of Johnson's hiring. “He brings strong experience and innovative ideas into our program, and the opportunity to have him focused each and every day on our men’s basketball student-athletes will provide significant impact.”
Johnson most recently served as the Director of Strength and Conditioning at George Washington University from 2013-18.
At George Washington, Johnson supervised a six-person staff that worked to maximize the performance of student-athletes from all 27 varsity athletics programs. In addition to designing and implementing strength and conditioning programs, Johnson also created nutrition initiatives for GW student-athletes and introduced high-performance technology into the program.
During his time at GW, the men’s basketball program captured the 2016 NIT Championship, while also making the 2014 NCAA Tournament and winning the 2014 Diamondhead Classic.
Prior to joining the GW staff, Johnson served as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for Montrose Christian School's nationally prominent basketball program from 2010-2013.

Emily Blurton is the Sports Performance Coach for the Seattle Storm, and has working in that role since 2016, where she was part of the 2018 championship season. Emily has worked as a corrective exercise specialist and kettlebell instructor at Elite Sports and Spine, and specializes in using a combination of kettlebells, bodyweight, and TRX as a means to create the appropriate loading and sensory input necessary to elicit physical and neurological changes for improved health and performance.

Ryan Buhain has been training basketball players since 2014. He started his basketball skills training career working for the world famous IMG Academy located in Bradenton, Florida. During his tenure at IMG, he has worked with hundreds of players from around the world including players from countries such as Russia, Greece, Ukraine, Mexico, and players from all over the United States. Jordin Canada: Thriving at every level of competition
Today we have Jordin Canada, point guard for the Seattle Storm, and 2018 WNBA champion and most recently made the 2019 All-Defensive First team. Jordin was drafted 5th overall in 2018, and comes from UCLA, born and raised in Los Angeles. She graduated as the all time UCLA and Pac-12 assists leader, scored 1800 points and dished out 700 assists, the only other person to do this was Gary Payton and won Pac-12 DPOY.

Isaiah West: Training Transferable Agility & Mental Health in the Black Community
As a young athlete, Isaiah was always inquisitive about performance. His thirst for knowledge inspired him to leave his hometown state of New Jersey, to pursue a degree in Kinesiology at George Mason University. Despite being a multi-year varsity athlete in Track & Field, and Basketball, "Zay" chose to forgo a collegiate athletic career in order to gain experience in the Strength & Conditioning industry upon entering college.
Zay spent time at George Mason University working with the school’s Division 1 Men’s and Women’s basketball teams as a strength and conditioning coach, traveled to Senegal, Africa to serve as the first strength and conditioning intern with the NBA Academy Senegal. Zay served on the strength and conditioning staff for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, interned at Cressey Sports Performance. Most recently, Zay was a Strength & Conditioning coach at The St. James in Springfield, VA working primarily with youth baseball, volleyball, track & field, and basketball, and is currently with Healthy Baller in Maryland.
Zay is dedicated to empowering and building relationships with his athletes, and he continues to create solutions for athletes to achieve their optimal performance.
