Galatians 5: Freedom and Fruit of Faith

I. The Freedom from Faith in the Son (5:1–15)

1. The work of Christ protects from the bondage of the law (5:1–4, 6–12).

The apostle Paul confronts the Galatians' attempt to say that salvation came by works by offering five arguments for justification by faith--1) the argument from the people (3:1-5), 2) the argument from the Patriarch (3:6-9, 15-18), 3) the argument from the precepts (3:10-12, 19-25), 4) the argument from the practice of the Son (3:13-14), and 5) the argument from the promise of the Spirit (3:26-29).

In Galatians 2, Paul defended the freedom found in the grace of God by acknowledging the endorsement that the early church gave his ministry, and by the enforcement of the grace of God when Peter and others showed partiality toward the Hebraic believers over the Hellenistic believers.

Dr. Brian Chilton discusses three models of biblical interpretation. The first model comes from the Alexandrian school as found in Alexandria, Egypt from the 2nd to 5th century AD. The Alexandrian school took a more allegorical approach to biblical interpretation. The Antiochene school held the second approach. The Antiochene school was found in Antioch, Syria from the 2nd to 5th century AD. This school took a more literalistic approach to Scripture.
