Sermon from Rev Bryony Taylor for Easter Day 2021
Listen to Rev Bryony's Easter Message based on this reading: John 20.1–18 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.’ 3Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. 4The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. 8Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10Then the disciples returned to their homes. 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; 12and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13They said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.’ 14When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.’ 16Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). 17Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” ’ 18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

Meditation for Monday of Holy Week
A meditation on the Gospel reading set for Holy Monday: John 12:1-11 New Revised Standard Version, Anglicised Mary Anoints Jesus 12 Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 2 There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. 3 Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them[a] with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, 5 ‘Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii[b] and the money given to the poor?’ 6 (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) 7 Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone. She bought it[c] so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. 8 You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.’

Sermon for Passion Sunday 21st March from Rev Bryony Taylor "Sir, we wish to see Jesus"
Sermon preached on this Gospel reading: John 12 20 Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ 22Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour. 27 ‘Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—“Father, save me from this hour”? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’ 29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, ‘An angel has spoken to him.’ 30Jesus answered, ‘This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. 31Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ 33He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. Sermon for Mothering Sunday from Rev'd Bryony Taylor "You hold me by my right hand"
Listen to Psalm 139 and this time, imagine God as mother, imagine God as mother saying these words to you, especially now, with all the emotion of the pandemic and what it has taken from us, feel the embrace of God, like a mother, cradling her child: 1 O Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 2 You mark out my journeys and my resting place and are acquainted with all my ways. 3 For there is not a word on my tongue, but you, O Lord, know it altogether. 4 You encompass me behind and before and lay your hand upon me. 5 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, so high that I cannot attain it. 6 Where can I go then from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? 7 If I climb up to heaven, you are there; if I make the grave my bed, you are there also. 8 If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 9 Even there your hand shall lead me, your right hand hold me fast. 10 If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will cover me and the light around me turn to night,’ 11 Even darkness is no darkness with you; the night is as clear as the day; darkness and light to you are both alike. 12 For you yourself created my inmost parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 13 I thank you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvellous are your works, my soul knows well. 14 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. 15 Your eyes beheld my form, as yet unfinished; already in your book were all my members written, 16 As day by day they were fashioned when as yet there was none of them. 17 How deep are your counsels to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! 18 If I count them, they are more in number than the sand, and at the end, I am still in your presence.

Sermon for the 3rd Sunday of Lent from Rev'd Bryony Taylor - the 10 best ways to live
This week’s sermon is on the Old Testament Reading from Exodus chapter 20: Then God spoke all these words: 2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; 3you shall have no other gods before me. 4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, 6but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. 8 Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. 9For six days you shall labour and do all your work. 10But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. 11For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. 12 Honour your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 13 You shall not murder. 14 You shall not commit adultery. 15 You shall not steal. 16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour. 17 You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour. [NRSV]

Sermon from Rev'd Bryony Taylor for the 2nd Sunday of Lent 28th Feb - Adventure with God
This week's sermon is based on the Old Testament reading: Genesis 17.1–7,15,16 17When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. 2And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous.’ 3Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, 4‘As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. 5No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. 6I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. 7I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. 15 God said to Abraham, ‘As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.’

Sermon for the Second Sunday before Lent 7th February 2021 - Does not wisdom call?
This week are exploring some of the richest passages of scripture all about wisdom. Proverbs 8.1,22–31 8Does not wisdom call,    and does not understanding raise her voice? 22 The Lord created me at the beginning of his work,    the first of his acts of long ago. 23 Ages ago I was set up,    at the first, before the beginning of the earth. 24 When there were no depths I was brought forth,    when there were no springs abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains had been shaped,    before the hills, I was brought forth— 26 when he had not yet made earth and fields,    or the world’s first bits of soil. 27 When he established the heavens, I was there,    when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28 when he made firm the skies above,    when he established the fountains of the deep, 29 when he assigned to the sea its limit,    so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, 30   then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight,    rejoicing before him always, 31 rejoicing in his inhabited world    and delighting in the human race.  [NRSV] Colossians 1.15–20 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. 17He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. [NRSV] John 1.1–14 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 12But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

Sermon for Candlemas on Sunday 31st January given by Rev'd Bryony Taylor
Sermon on the feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, also known as Candlemas. The gospel reading: Luke 2.22–40 22 When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23(as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord’), 24and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.’ 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.27Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, 28Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, 29 ‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,    according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31   which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles    and for glory to your people Israel.’ 33 And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’ 36 There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, 37then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. 39 When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him.

Sermon for the Second Sunday of Epiphany - 17th January
Listen to this week's sermon from Rev Bryony on this reading from John's gospel: John 1.43–51 43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, ‘Follow me.’ 44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.’ 46Nathanael said to him, ‘Can anything good come out of Nazareth?’ Philip said to him, ‘Come and see.’ 47When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he said of him, ‘Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!’ 48Nathanael asked him, ‘Where did you come to know me?’ Jesus answered, ‘I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.’ 49Nathanael replied, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!’ 50Jesus answered, ‘Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.’ 51And he said to him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.’

Pray Psalm 77 with me
Psalm 77 - read along with me 1    I cry aloud to God;  ♦ I cry aloud to God and he will hear me. 2    In the day of my trouble I have sought the Lord;  ♦ by night my hand is stretched out and does not tire; my soul refuses comfort. 3    I think upon God and I groan;  ♦ I ponder, and my spirit faints. 4    You will not let my eyelids close;  ♦ I am so troubled that I cannot speak. 5    I consider the days of old;  ♦ I remember the years long past; 6    I commune with my heart in the night;  ♦ my spirit searches for understanding. 7    Will the Lord cast us off for ever?  ♦ Will he no more show us his favour? 8    Has his loving mercy clean gone for ever?  ♦ Has his promise come to an end for evermore? 9    Has God forgotten to be gracious?  ♦ Has he shut up his compassion in displeasure? 10  And I said, ‘My grief is this:  ♦ that the right hand of the Most High has lost its strength.’ 11  I will remember the works of the Lord  ♦ and call to mind your wonders of old time. 12  I will meditate on all your works  ♦ and ponder your mighty deeds. 13  Your way, O God, is holy;  ♦ who is so great a god as our God? 14  You are the God who worked wonders  ♦ and declared your power among the peoples. 15  With a mighty arm you redeemed your people,  ♦ the children of Jacob and Joseph. 16  The waters saw you, O God; the waters saw you and were afraid;  ♦ the depths also were troubled. 17  The clouds poured out water; the skies thundered;  ♦ your arrows flashed on every side; 18  The voice of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lit up the ground;  ♦ the earth trembled and shook. 19  Your way was in the sea, and your paths in the great waters,  ♦ but your footsteps were not known. 20  You led your people like sheep  ♦ by the hand of Moses and Aaron. Friday poem - Praise the rain by Joy Harjo
Praise the Rain BY JOY HARJO Praise the rain; the seagull dive The curl of plant, the raven talk— Praise the hurt, the house slack The stand of trees, the dignity— Praise the dark, the moon cradle The sky fall, the bear sleep— Praise the mist, the warrior name The earth eclipse, the fired leap— Praise the backwards, upward sky The baby cry, the spirit food— Praise canoe, the fish rush The hole for frog, the upside-down— Praise the day, the cloud cup The mind flat, forget it all— Praise crazy. Praise sad. Praise the path on which we're led. Praise the roads on earth and water. Praise the eater and the eaten. Praise beginnings; praise the end. Praise the song and praise the singer. Praise the rain; it brings more rain. Praise the rain; it brings more rain.
