07 - Gumbo, Ambakofi, Tanzania

07 - Gumbo, Ambakofi, Tanzania

Gumbo Majubwa is the founder of Ambakofi, a Tanzanian NGO engaging in regenerative forestry and mangrove restoration. The word Ambakofi comes from the name of the native tree species in Tanzania. At the age of 24,  Gumbo was horrified to see the forest being cleared in his childhood home of Bagamoyo District, on the East coast of Tanzania.  This drove him to focus on conserving nature, first through studying at the Institute of Rural Development Planning in Dodoma and then working on a series of conservation initiatives.  In 2017 he joined the Kanthari International Institute for Social Change in Kerala, India, to study leadership for social change. It was this experience that led him to found Ambakofi.

Mangroves are coastal forests which absorb huge amounts of carbon in their roots and provide a vital ecosystem for many fish. Restoring and conserving them is an essential pillar in the effort to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss.

Ambakofi employ a Community Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR) approach, pioneered by another beach partner Mangrove Action Project. We talk about Gumbo's background, CBEMR and the restoration work that is about to begin in the village of Ushongo Mabaoni, all funded by the Beach Collective.

06 - Christian Berger PhD, PEBL, UK

06 - Christian Berger PhD, PEBL, UK

Christian is a co-founder of Plant Ecology Beyond Land (PEBL), a community interest company based in North Wales, UK. Christian has a background in Material Science and Sensor Technology and completed a PhD at the University of Manchester.

At PEBL, Christian is leading the development of new methods of cultivating and monitoring seaweeds. To date the PEBL team has developed a Seaweed Hatchery where kelp seedlings are germinated and grown into juvenile seaweed plantlets before they are planted out to sea. PEBL has also developed environmental monitoring equipment such as programmable underwater cameras as well as light, flow and water quality sensors. This will help seaweed growers and environmental authorities to better understand the environmental impact of seaweed farming.

The Beach Collective will soon be launching a seaweed NFT representing a participating interest in a kelp farm we have leased off the south coast of Scotland.

05 - Barbz, Philippines Beach Clean (Cebu)

05 - Barbz, Philippines Beach Clean (Cebu)

Barbz was the very first member of our global beach clean team. Barbz is an active crypto trader and found $BEACH via one of our social media competitions way back in August. You may recognise her from her upbeat beach clean videos. We discuss her career, her family, beach cleans, the Beach Dive Team, mangrove restoration, and her experience of the terrifying Typhoon Rai which hit Cebu hard in December.

"Thank you so much for the Beach Community. It's a win win situation: we earn, but also we help the seas. We're so happy to be part of the community."

If you'd like to donate to the typhoon recovery we recommend Kids for Kids: https://paymongo.page/l/ktf-donate

03 - Jihad Hendawi, Lebanon Beach Clean

03 - Jihad Hendawi, Lebanon Beach Clean

Jihad Hendawi is a Palestinian refugee living in Lebanon. Despite being a third generation resident in Lebanon, due to political reasons the Lebanese state refuse to recognise his rights as a Lebanese citizen. Neither he nor his parents have ever set foot in Palestine; they have spent their entire lives living in Lebanon, and yet they cannot vote, they cannot buy a house and they cannot practise certain professions including being a doctor, an engineer or a psychologist - the latter of which Jihad is currently studying.

Lebanon is going through one of the most difficult moments in its history, with rampant corruption, spiralling inflation and the fallout from the Beirut port explosion. In such a difficult situation, the Beach Collective is proud to be a small force for good. As Jihad says:

"The Lebanese crisis made everyone lose hope, so now seeing that some young people are cleaning their beaches, the whole community is behind us and they're supporting us, because they think what we're doing is noble. And I think what Beach Token are doing is noble."

02 - Togbe Ghana, Let's Go Clean The Beach, Ghana

David Kumordzi (a.k.a. Togbe Ghana) is a reggae musician and clean oceans activist based in Accra, Ghana. Togbe shot to fame in Ghana with a song he recorded and released to protest against illegal mining going on the country. From there Togbe recorded songs to raise awareness about drug abuse and finally clean oceans in support of the #KeepGhanaClean campaign. Togbe is Sanitation Personality of the Year and Environment Personality of the Year in the Ghana Leadership Awards.

Beach Collective are proud to have partnered with Let's Go Clean The Beach for a weekly beach clean of South Labadi Estate Beach and La Tawala Beach taking place every Sunday. Since the partnership began we have been able to clear many tonnes of waste and rubbish from the beach. Here's to many more.

01 - Ismail Abdalla, Faulu Productions, Kenya

01 - Ismail Abdalla, Faulu Productions, Kenya

Ismail Abdalla is a refugee from the D.R.C. living in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Northern Kenya. As the heir to a traditional position as the head of a tribe, his life, and the life of his family, was in danger, and he was forced to flee the D.R.C. to seek refuge in Tanzania and eventually Kenya.

When he finally settled in Kakuma refugee camp he and several other refugees from the D.R.C. and other war-torn countries such as Sudan Somalia and Burundi, formed Faulu Productions, a non-profit community-based organisation with four pillars of work: Agriculture/Permaculture, Education, Environment, and Empowerment of women and young people.

Ismail's story is incredibly inspiring and the Beach Collective are proud to be partnering with him and Faulu Productions. In fact we're so impressed with their work, in the call we agree to raise the number of women we sponsor from 20 to 30!
