Hello, listeners! Boy, do we have a treat for you! This is an in-depth special episode where we had the greatest pleasure of chatting with one of our favorite people from Iowa... ART BORRECA! He is the Co-Head of the Playwriting Program and Head of the Dramaturgy Program at the University of Iowa (aka where Sam and I met and became friends!). Art talks about his journey into theater and dramaturgy, what he loves about new plays, and shares with us the Iowa Playwrights Workshop program. We are so excited for you to listen to this one. Art Borreca is associate professor of dramaturgy, dramatic literature, and theatre history, co-head of the playwriting program, and head of the dramaturgy program. He has worked as a dramaturg with a number of leading theatre artists, including Athol Fugard, Wole Soyinka, Theodora Skipitares, David Gothard, and Naomi Wallace in such venues as the Yale Repertory Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, LaMama ETC, Oxford Stage Company in the U.K., and T.P.T (Theatre Project Tokyo) in Japan. His research interests include contemporary British and American theatre, new play dramaturgy, and political dramaturgy. His articles and reviews have appeared in TDR (The Drama Review), Modern Drama, and Theatre Journal; as well as in several books, including Dramaturgy in American Theatre, What is Dramaturgy? and Approaching the Millennium: Essays on Angels in America. Professor Borreca is a contributing editor of the two-volume Norton Anthology of Drama. 60. PLAY: The King Of Hell's Palace by Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig
As part of our new monthly play series, we pick a play to discuss and this month’s play is “The King of Hell's Palace" by Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig. In this episode, we discuss what we noticed, what we liked, and questions that came up while reading the play. This play was also recommended to us by one of our listeners and we are so glad! As corrupt health officials cut costs to maximize profits, safety standards are ignored, bringing potential catastrophe to China's most vulnerable population. Inspired by true events, this gripping drama explores the conflicts that arise when a community's greatest source of capital becomes their own bodies. Hello, listeners! In this episode, we chat with dramaturg, new play doula, and an incredible supporter of Beckett's Babies-- SHAUN LEISHER! He shares his journey into dramaturgy, what he loves about new plays, and how we can best support new work. It was an incredible joy to speak with Shaun. We could all learn a thing or two from his passion to support and advocate for new work. Check it out! Shaun Leisher (pronouns: he/him/his) is a dramaturg and new play doula based in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. As a dramaturg, he has worked on productions at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA and a workshop production of RAW PASTA by Maya Macdonald at the 2019 Ice Factory Festival at the New Ohio in NYC. In his local theatre community, Shaun is a co-founder and the Literary Manager of Emerge Theatre Company, co-created the Allentown Public Theatre's play reading series, Theatre Cafe, and has produced various readings and new play festivals throughout the region. He is also proud to be a reader/nominator r for a number of organizations dedicated to the advocacy and development of new work including: The Kilroys, Normal Ave, 50 Playwrights Project, and Play Penn. 57. INTERVIEW: Paul Michael Thomson
Hey listeners! We had the amazing opportunity to chat with the one and only Paul Michael Thomson. He is an actor, playwright, and co-artistic director of The Story Theatre. He had so much to say about playwriting, theater, and what it means to be an artist. We also got a chance to talk about his hilarious and page-turning play "The G.O.A.T., or Who Is Ximone?". As an actor, he has worked with Steppenwolf Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare, and Windy City Playhouse, among others. His plays have been produced by Avalanche Theatre, The Impostors Theatre Company, Other Theatre, Arc Theatre, and The Story Theatre, of which he is a founding ensemble member. 56. INTERVIEW: Olivia Lilley
In this episode, Sam and Sarah get the opportunity to chat with playwright, director, deviser and artistic director of Prop Theater -- Olivia Lilley! Olivia Lilley is a playwright, director, and deviser who came up in Chicago's DIY scene. She uses a devised process to create and develop her plays that she's been honing since 2013. Olivia's work often ransacks classic literature or nonfiction with a collective and builds a new story for the current moment. Part Mary Zimmerman, Part John Cassavettes, Olivia's work is actor centric while also boldly multidisciplinary. She often collaborates with choreographer Kelly Anderson. Olivia is Artistic Director of Prop Thtr. She was the founding Artistic Director of The Runaways Lab Theatre and currently sits on their advisory board. She's an Artistic Associate at Pivot Arts, and she's curated at The Museum of Contemporary Art. Unfortunately, Upton’s chores and homework get in the way of his 24/7 videogaming, and Desi’s math grades don’t fit the Asian-American stereotype. Then Upton comes up with a novel solution for both problems: he acquires a Chinese indentured servant, who harbors an American dream of his own. Originally from Lockhart, Texas, she found her way to the genre while completing an MFA in Writing at the University of San Francisco (USF) where she studied poetry exclusively. While a student at USF, Marisela became the Resident Poet of El Teatro Jornalero!, a social justice theatre company comprised of Latinx immigrants. Marisela’s first play BRAIDED SORROW (2008 Su Teatro world premiere) won the 2006 Chicano/Latino Literary Prize in Drama and the 2009 Pen Center USA Literary Award in Drama. Her other plays include: AMERICAN TRIAGE (2012 Repertorio Español Nuestras Voces Finalist); GHOST LIMB (2017 Brava Theatre world premiere); HEART SHAPED NEBULA (2015 Shotgun Players world premiere); SHOE (2019 Kendeda Finalist); RETURN TO SENDER (2019 Nashville Children’s Theatre world premiere); and WOMAN ON FIRE (2016 Camino Real Productions world premiere). In 2011, she began writing her cycle of grim Latinx fairy tales—fairy tales for adults inspired by Latinx mythology and folklore which include: THE RIVER BRIDE (2013 National Latino Playwriting Award Co-Winner, 2016 Oregon Shakespeare Festival world premiere); WOLF AT THE DOOR (2016 Kilroys List, 2018/2019 National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere); and ALCIRA. Marisela is an alum of the Iowa Playwrights Workshop, the Playwrights Foundation’s Resident Playwright Initiative, a founding member of the Bay Area Latino Theatre Artists Network, and a member of the Latinx Theatre Commons’ national Steering Committee. 30. Write and Don't Judge What You Write with John Mabey
Playwright, improviser and mental health counselor John Mabey joins us on this episode to discuss all things playwriting, theater, improv, and more. John is a listener of the show who reached out to us and we wanted to reach back to bring him on show!  John began writing plays as a child before he knew that’s what he was doing. He’s spent the past 10 years living in New York, London and Amsterdam and now lives in the American South. He studied human behavior, emotion and relationships by earning a master’s degree in Counseling and Psychology, and infuses into his playwriting everything he’s learned about what it means to be human. In addition to plays, he also publishes in academic books and journals on the topics of sexual identity and spirituality. In playwriting, John enjoys experimenting with structure and uses improvisation as a way to generate creative ideas as well as its own art form. He now teaches and performs improvisation around the world with ensembles and as a solo act, and is a regular performer in true storytelling events. Last year, John co-authored a play that was produced in Amsterdam titled, The B Word, which had a successful 2-week run and multiple sold-out performances. Next month his short play, The Most Brave Girl In The Whole Wide World, is included in the Los Angeles play festival ‘A Light In Dark Places’ at the Stella Adler Theatre. Literary Manager (and fellow Iowa alumn) Jenni Page-White joins us on this episode to share her experiences as both a dramaturg and literary manager. This is a great episode for our listeners who are interested in dramaturgy and have been thinking about literary management as a profession! Jenni gives us some thoughtful insight into the world. We hope you'll enjoy it! Jenni Page-White is the literary manager at Actors Theatre of Louisville, where she curates and develops new work for the Humana Festival of New American Plays. Her dramaturgy credits at Actors Theatre include The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Angels in America (Parts One and Two), and the world premieres of We’ve Come to Believe, by Kara Lee Corthron, Emily Feldman, and Matthew Paul Olmos; Dave Harris’s Everybody Black; Mara Nelson-Greenberg’s Do You Feel Anger?; Susan Soon He Stanton’s we, the invisibles ; Basil Kreimendahl’s We’re Gonna Be Okay; Tasha Gordon-Solmon’s I Now Pronounce; Brendan Pelsue’s Wellesley Girl; and Steven Dietz’s This Random World. Prior to working at Actors Theatre, she was the literary associate at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where she helped select and develop new plays for First Look and coordinated post-show discussion programming. As a freelance dramaturg, she has worked with WildWind Performance Lab, American Theater Company, Sideshow Theatre Company and LiveWire Chicago Theatre, and she has evaluated work for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Playwrights’ Center, the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, and The New Harmony Project. She is the co-editor, with Amy Wegener, of several volumes of Humana Festival play anthologies. She holds a B.F.A. from the University of Oklahoma and an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa. 20. Interview with Bella Poynton
Playwright, Ph.D. candidate and Artistic Director of The Navigators Theater Company, Bella Poynton, brilliantly shares with us her knowledge and love of theater on this week's episode of Beckett's Babies. Learn how Bella’s love for science fiction and search for truth lead her to not only seek a Ph.D. degree but to create her own theater company with her fellow collaborators. BELLA is a playwright, director, and instructor of theatre studies. Her playwriting often focuses on science fiction of speculative themes. Bella’s plays have been produced and developed at the Great Plains Theater Festival, New Perspectives Theater, The Science Fiction Theater Company, Otherworld Theatre, the Pittsburgh New Play Festival, The Alleyway Theatre, The Antaeus Company, Madlab, Road Less Traveled Productions, Quantum Dragon Theatre and many more. Bella has been a finalist for the Woodward/Newman Drama Award, the Heideman Prize, The Christopher Brian Wolk Award, and the Samuel French OOB Festival. She has been a regional playwriting resident at Road Less Traveled Productions, and a teaching artist at Shea's Buffalo, The Just Buffalo Literary Center, Syracuse Stage, Horizon Theatre Company, and many others. Bella is also the Artistic Director of The Navigators Theatre Company, producing feminist science fiction stories for the stage. The company currently has a residency with Access Theatre in New York City.  In addition to her playwriting, Bella is also a PhD Candidate in Performance Studies at the University at Buffalo. Her ongoing research project explores robots and A.I. in performance from 1920 to the present. Other research interests include mixed reality performance, the historical avant-garde, and female playwrights. Bella holds a BFA in Acting from Boston University, an MA in Theatre from the University at Buffalo, and an MFA in Playwriting from the Iowa Playwrights' Workshop. Director and playwright Nina Morrison joins us to share how she got into the world of theater and explains how her directing experience lends itself to playwriting. She is a University of Iowa Provost's Postgraduate Visiting Writer 2019-2020. Nina is currently based in Iowa City, before Iowa, she was based in New York City for 17 years. Some NYC credits are: Nina wrote and directed the plays Arrow In and Girl Adventure: Parts 1-4 both presented by Dixon Place, The HOT! Festival of Queer Performance and the Little Theatre series. Nina was a Dixon Place Artist-in-Residence, and she was a WORKSPACE Writer-in-Residence, a residency program of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
