This podcast episode features a detailed conversation with Debbie Gutierrez about the vital role of breathwork in health, recovery, and wellbeing. Debbie shares her personal health journey, including her battle with fatigue, pain, and eventually being diagnosed with endocarditis stemming from a congenital heart defect, leading to open heart surgery and a stroke that affected her memory and cognitive functions. The host and Debbie delve into the science and benefits of breathwork, discussing how proper breathing techniques can significantly influence our physical and mental health. They explore various breathwork practices, including functional breathing exercises for stress reduction, energy enhancement, and improving physiological functions like digestion and sleep. The conversation also touches on the impact of proper breathing on weight loss, chronic disease, and overall longevity. Through personal anecdotes and expert insights, the episode illuminates the profound effects of incorporating mindful breathing into daily life and provides actionable advice for listeners to start practicing breathwork for improved health and wellness.
Deb Gutierrez is a Certified Nutritional Therapist and a Functional and Therapeutic Breathwork Practitioner. epi 16 ~ Changing her Narrative ~Get the How & Why, with Kiki Hurwitt
Transformative Fitness Journeys with Kiki Hurwitt
In this episode, Kiki Hurwitt shares her inspiring fitness and wellness journey, transitioning from pre-diabetic health concerns to a vibrant and healthy lifestyle. Initially joining Instagram by accident and growing to nearly 46,000 followers, Kiki found a supportive community and a platform to share her progress and challenges. Despite losing followers occasionally, she emphasizes the quality of connections over numbers. Kiki traces her motivation for a healthier lifestyle back to a concerning physical exam in 2020, where she discovered she was pre-diabetic and at risk of following in her diabetic parents' footsteps. With help from her stepdaughter, an online fitness coach, she embarked on a transformative journey that included weight lifting, macro tracking, and building a supportive community through programs like 'TrainWithJoan.' Kiki's journey not only improved her physical health but also significantly benefited her mental health, helping manage her clinical depression. Inspired by her process, her husband and children have also embraced healthier lifestyles, collectively losing over 100 pounds. Kiki now coaches other women, focusing on mindset training and sustainable health habits. She encourages starting small, aiming for consistency over perfection, and finding a support system to navigate the challenges of a health transformation. Kiki's Instagram, @theLikaViking (Lykke meaning 'joyful' in Scandinavian), serves as a platform for inspiration, sharing her continuous journey and connecting with others seeking a healthier lifestyle.

In this podcast, the host discusses the importance of maintaining a healthy microbial ecosystem both internally and externally, with guest speaker Kiran Krishnan, a leading researcher on all aspects of the microbiome. They discuss how the skin and gut microbiomes communicate with each other and greatly impact general health. Particular emphasis was placed on a concept called 'Leaky Skin' - an imbalance of skin microbes which can lead to chronic inflammation and contribute to various diseases. Kiran also explained how transient, quorum-sensing microbes can help rebalance the skin’s ecosystem, thereby reducing the likelihood of leaky skin. The benefits of ingesting prebiotics and probiotics as well as the negative effects of antibiotics and certain diets on the skin and gut health were also discussed.

epi 10 ~ Integrative Practices! Lymph, Breath, Cold & Hot Therapies! Oh My!!
Hello my friends and welcome back to the Becoming Ageless podcast where we have conversations about WHOLE HEALTH for naturally increasing healthspan and decreasing biological age. I’m your host, Robynn Lin Fredericks , and I believe in both “BEING” and Living AGELESS!
I always like to remind my listeners that creating a long healthspan is like putting together a jigsaw puzzle and it takes many odd-shaped pieces to complete a beautiful master-piece. While we can’t control everything in our environment, becoming ageless is both a lifestyle and mindset which requires us to become AWARE of things that we are actually able to control. Essentially, we are building an actionable plan to put the odds in our favor to achieve our health goals, as we grow older.
Learning the way the body works and then working WITH the body as a team is, in my opinion, key to an increased healthspan. With that in mind, today’s conversation involves some of my favorite integrative therapies. We’re talking about the lymphatic system, breath work, benefits of cold and hot therapies, as well as pairing the 2 together, for “contrast therapy”.
My guest is Jakob Diehl, owner/proprietor of CryoAid, here in Napa, California. He first discovered cryotherapy when looking for relief for his own health, particularly stress and inflammation. Finding success through this integrative practice, he did a deep dive into the research and 6 years later, he now helps hundreds of clients accomplish their health goals. I’m sure you will gain a lot from his experience and knowledge, so I encourage you to grab a pen and be ready to take a few notes!

epi 9 ~ Finding Fitness Over 40
Hello my friends and welcome back to the Becoming Ageless podcast where we have conversations about WHOLE HEALTH for naturally increasing healthspan and decreasing biological age.
The puzzle piece we are talking about today is movement and nutrition, particularly after age 40.
While there’s little debate about the need of movement and exercise and it’s ability to increase the quality of life through improved immunity, sleep, energy, metabolism, psychological state, wellness and longevity, and the improved function of tissues such as bones, nerves, joints, and muscles. The question lies in what kind? How much? What’s the best food plan to accommodate our workouts, both in providing fuel as well as recovery. We all have different goals, different lifestyles, different body types. And today, we hope to clear up a little of that confusion and help set you up for success.
My guest today is Catherine Piot, coming to us all the way from Berlin, Germany. She has a master’s degree in nutrition and physical education with almost 30 years of experience. In addition, she also has numerous certifications in the field of athletic performance and sports nutrition. Catherine is the author of the book ‘’Transform your body after 40. A Women’s Guide to Weight Loss and Fitness.’’ (which is available on Amazon) and the creator of the 3-month program FIT & LEAN, which helps women over 40 lose fat without restrictive diets and hours of cardio.
She works with clients from around the globe, teaching lifestyle changes and simplifying nutrition by eating healthy food in the right amount RATHER than getting stuck in a traditional “diet”.

epi 8 ~ Finding Sleep
Welcome back to the Becoming Ageless podcast where we have conversations about WHOLE HEALTH for naturally increasing healthspan and decreasing biological age. I’m your host, Robynn Lin Fredericks and I believe in living and BEING Ageless!
When talking Healthspan, we are talking about individuals being able to age in good health without chronic diseases or disability.
And If you follow this podcast, you know that I strongly believe that achieving a long healthspan is like putting together a complicated jigsaw puzzle! There are many pieces, with various shapes and colors. Some of the those pieces are obvious to the final picture, while others are not so obvious, but nonetheless, still important to the overall image. It’s my goal that we uncover them all to help YOU put together the beautiful masterpiece of a long healthy, vibrant, and passionate life!
Today, we are talking about SLEEP. The National Institute of Medicine cites, that “Healthy sleep quality was associated with a reduced risk of premature end of healthspan, suggesting healthy sleep behavior may extend healthspan.”
And according to the Institute of Medicine, 50-70 million US adults have a sleeping disorder, with 40% of people aged 40 to 59, which is our main listener group, reporting that they are getting less than recommended amounts of sleep, which is 7-9 hours. 75-90% of insomnia sufferers have an increased risk of medical disorders including heart disease, stroke, asthma, COPD, cancer, arthritis, depression, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and even premature skin aging. 9 million Americans take prescription drugs to help them fall asleep, with China being the most sleep medicated country in the world. The frequency of sleep med use is associated with higher mortality rate and a 35% higher chance of developing cancer.
Sleep deprivation is a chronic issue in our world, perhaps more now than ever before, and obviously, from the statistics I just mentioned, it affects our health and wellbeing. So my hope today is that we can delve into this subject and talk about things that we can do.
My guest today is Dr. Nirusa Kumaran. She is the Founder and Medical Director of the Elemental Health Clinic in London, she is a practicing NHS and Private GP, Certified Lifestyle Medicine Physician and Functional Medicine Specialist. She’s passionate about holistic, integrative and patient centered care with specialties in Gut health, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Bio-energetics.
Dr. Kumaran faced both her own challenges of burnout and digestive issues as well as her own daughter, at just 5 weeks old, suffering from severe eczema and multiple food allergies, which took her down the road of searching for root causes, which ultimately led her to Functional Medicine.
epi 5 ~ Overcoming Chronic Stress
We know today that people who are exposed to chronic stress age rapidly. The telomeres in their cells shorten faster and Inflammation, which is a feature of stress, accounts for the phenomenon of “infla-maging”. And in addition to aging itself, infla-maging can contribute to the development of several pathologies, including atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypertension, and others. According to an article from Biomedicines, as published in the NIH, “Psychological stress is considered to be an important risk factor for numerous diseases. The common feature of these pathologies is cellular senescence, which causes functional alterations and is associated with cancer AND cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and autoimmune disorders. All of the conditions are usually associated with whole-body aging, but, in the case of lasting severe stress, they can occur early in life, causing an older biological age. Numerous studies have shown a link between chronic psychological stress and mental disorders, such as major depressive disorder, & PTSD, as well as accelerated aging. Chronic psychological stress is also believed to stimulate pro-inflammatory cytokines release, thus triggering the inflammation. On the plus side, another recent study published in Translational Psychiatry found that even though chronic stress may contribute to accelerated (or faster) aging, as noted by bio-age testing, ...the good news is emotional regulation and self-control have been found to help. (1) This research reaffirms that stress is not just a feeling, and it WILL manifest physically. When we grow accustomed to constant levels of stress, we often don’t understand how out of control it has gotten. Stress will shape your life, and the responsibility is on you, and me, to remove the stress or be faced with accommodating it.
So we are going to dig into this today with my guest and good friend, Tanya Walker, who has an established practice as a holistic coach, somatic practitioner, as well as a breathwork and movement facilitator and teaches her clients how to make powerful shifts in their mental, emotional and physical health. She has operated multiple retreats and workshops, speaks at corporate events and will be presenting at the upcoming national ALS conference in Salt Lake City where she will talk about the power of the emotional body to heal illness.

epi 6 ~ Learning to Eat for Well-Being
Dr. Josef Paul Arnould, D.C., is a chiropractor, strength training advisor and the author of numerous books on exercise and nutrition.
Even in his early childhood, he enjoyed the quest for physical fitness. Whether it was catching snakes, climbing trees, throwing rocks and snowballs, or hitting baseballs, he loved the thrill of physical exertion. As a voracious teenage reader, he was also stimulated by the relationship of good nutrition to successful athletic performance.
After graduating from Princeton University and Framingham State University, with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English and Language Arts respectively, he entered Palmer College of Chiropractic with a career ambition of helping others achieve good health. In the curriculum at Palmer, he studied human anatomy, physiology, and nutrition in great depth.
Upon receiving his doctorate in 1983, Dr. Arnould opened a clinic in Western Massachusetts. From his first days of practice, he was determined to fuse three natural disciplines of health: whole-body exercise; nutritious eating; and comprehensive chiropractic healthcare. To symbolize his commitment to this concept, he named his practice Strength for Life® Health and Fitness Center. Now in its 39th year, this clinic thrives as a community where people of all ages come to learn about exercising and eating intelligently and about receiving chiropractic care when necessary.
To share the knowledge and experience he had gained from many years of reading and teaching, as well as his lifelong love of exercise, Dr. Arnould composed a comprehensive textbook, Stronger After 40: Strength Training as Healthcare for Women and Men in the 21st Century. Published in 2005, this work contains hundreds of photos and detailed explanations demonstrating how we can perform strength training and flexibility exercises safely and well, even if we are 80 or 90 years of age.
Multiple books have followed thereafter including Neck Strength for Life (2018), Abdominal Strength for Life® (2018) and Abdominal Strength for Life® 2: Advanced Exercises (2020), as well as American Diet Revolution! (2020).
American Diet Revolution! is more than a manual of dietary advice, in this work we learn why and how, if we value our own health and the health of everyone we know and love, we must become activists about the foods we purchase and eat. Having helped thousands of patients lose weight, he combines his personal experience with exhaustive research in order to detail what a healthy diet and exercise routine should look like to attain and maintain optimal health.
Despite recently celebrating his 74th birthday, you will still find Dr. Arnould at his fitness center in Easthampton, MA, 6 days per week. There he draws on his nearly 40 years of experience to help his patients realign physical imbalances, teaches them how to exercise effectively in recovering from injuries and in striving for excellent health, how to discover the joys of movement and healthy food, and how most importantly, to continue trying to grow healthier and stronger as they age.
In his spare time, he teaches discus and javelin to the Easthampton High School track team. In addition, he is an active Senior Games competitor, specializing in javelin and discus where he has won numerous medals, including gold in discus at both the Massachusetts Senior Games as well as the Vermont Senior Games in 2021 and gold in javelin at the Massachusetts Senior Games in 2019. He is attending the National Senior Games for the first time in May, 2022.

epi 2 ~ Choose Your Story ~ Finding Health Through Fitness, Food, & Mindfulness
"Choose your story, Change your life" is a theme of today's guest, Judy Arazoza. Everyday, we get a choice in what we feed our mind, our body, our heart.
Judy Arazoza is a dynamo and inspiration to midlifers in all she does! She describes herself as the “average” lady next door, who EXCELS at being herself! She began her career in health as a Respiratory Therapist and Respiratory Care Adjunct Instructor in NY and now, with multiple certifications under her belt, she focuses on preventative health through modalities such as mindfulness, resistance training and sustainable nutrition. She’s the owner of Grateful Fitness and the host of the Air Hug Community podcast where she offers countless tips for the midlife journey.
In this episode, Judy speaks about fitness in mid-life, "We're not the same person we were back in our 20s, so we shouldn't train in the same way." Our focus should be on proper nutrition, resistance training is next, followed by cardio, with a dash of strength training on top. Judy's fave affirmation: "I am strong, I am disciplined, I am healthy" and "I love myself!"
Action Steps:
- 10 minutes of "non-exercise" movement
- Pause daily and write down one thing you're grateful for
- Look in the mirror daily and say to yourself, "I love you."
**Judy's Pesto Recipe:
2 cups of tightly packed leaves such as basil, spinach, wild ramps, and or parsley any combo will do (remove thick stems)
1/4 cup nuts (walnuts are my favorite)
4 cloves garlic peeled and chopped
1/4 cup olive oil best quality first cold pressed
1/ 2 cup grated pecorino Romano cheese
Add Water if too thick
Combine everything and blend in food processor or blender. Feel free to use a mortar and pestle, l am not patient enough so I use a blender. Taste and add salt and pepper as desired. Use within a day or two and Freeze extra in ice cube trays.

Epi 0 ~ Robynn Lin Fredericks, BCHHP, IFNP, Intro
Hello and welcome to the Becoming Ageless podcast where we talk about all things related to increasing healthspan and flourishing in mid-life & beyond ! I can't express how excited I am to get this party started and grow a thriving community! And, on this very first show, I want to take an opportunity to tell you more about me, my story and to share my mission for this show, WHICH is to help YOU uncover strategies of staying healthy, vibrant, full of energy, to increase healthspan and make this second stage of life, the VERY BEST STAGE OF LIFE!
I am Robynn Lin Fredericks, your host and creator/producer of the Becoming Ageless podcast and I am a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner and Integrative and Functional Nutrition Practitioner, based in Northern California and I believe in being ageless and living AGELESSLY!
Being AGELESS is not “just” about a wrinkle, although the skin is an important organ of the body and the immune system and needs to be taking care of it, it’s also not about being 20 again... Been there, done that...I have no intention of going back! It IS about living life to its fullest and to its healthiest without a number dictating what our life or our health should look like.
According to the World Health Organization, the average life expectancy in the US is 79 years old and the average “healthy life expectancy” is 63 years old. So according to these numbers, the average American will live up to 20% of their lives in an unhealthy and diseased state. As you'll learn, on this podcast, HEALTHSPAN is the foundation of our conversations! I talk with the very people who study various pieces of health, longevity, mindset, fitness and even skin, as well as a few inspirational people that are living it out, sharing their secrets! We’ll be breaking down the complicated science and uncovering the strategies for healthier living! And in every episode, we’re going to give you at least 3 actions that you can take immediately to make positive changes in your and your family’s health!
So sit back and tune in! Be ready to write down some inspirational nuggets you may hear and let's all grow ageless, together!
