Dylan Laube’s dream was to become an NFL player, and now that dream appears to be more of a reality. Dylan joins our show to take us on his journey from a depth piece to one of the most coveted running backs in the 2024 NFL Draft.  We discuss his jump to becoming one of the CAA’s leading rushers in 2022, modeling his game off of Adrian Peterson, and making the decision to ditch lacrosse for football full-time. Fresh off the Senior Bowl, Laube gives us his insight on playing with potential high draft picks like Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr.  We break down the NFL Combine, how much of it takes place off the TV screen, and some of the long days. When Megan Lanham was wrapping up her MBA at MIT, she was pulling double-duty as the Chief Executive Officer of a pharmaceutical recruiting company. Drowning in one of her dreaded data science courses, she couldn't help but think of a real-world example: how could AI and data play into sports betting? An episode-long in the making, Connor comes with the most morbid stories from the Beer, Business, and Balls topics.  We start with a man in Vietnam who was hospitalized from drinking too much methanol, but was saved by drinking beer to break down the ethanol in his body.  We take a deep dive into prohibition, which included the Prohibition Bureau adding poison to alcohol to prevent people from drinking it, as well as the Great Whiskey Fire of Dublin.  In the business front, we break down the case of Garry Hoy - who accidentally flung himself out a window as part of a class experiment - the Stewart Parnell hearings in the 2000s, and the GM recalls in 2014.  We also discuss the case of Howard Lutnick of Cantor Fitzgerald, who rebuilt his company from scratch after losing nearly every employee in the 9/11 attacks.  In Balls, we discuss a few stadium disasters; the lightning strike during a soccer match in Congo killing the entire home team, and the Hillsborough Stadium disaster in 1989.  We also discuss Dave Duerson's battle with CTE in the NFL, as well as the Bryan Pata case - Pata was murdered by his teammate, who was photographed praying with the team.

Phil Martelli Jr. was born to be a basketball coach. While Matt Batten aspired to be a pro baseball player, many were still shocked to see him make his MLB debut in the summer of 2022.  Now two years in to his MLB service, Batten put together a strong finish to his 2023 campaign as a utility infielder for the San Diego Padres.  Matt joins the show to take us through his journey of youth baseball to the pros - from repping Shelton, Connecticut in the 2008 Little League World Series, to setting the all-time hits record at Quinnipiac University.  We discuss the grind of the minor leagues, playing for 7 different MiLB teams through 7 seasons, and finally earning the call to the bigs.  We also discuss some of the advice and lessons learned from his teammates Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, and Juan Soto.

Not many guests have been bestowed the BBB Pod's highest honor, but this week Con Spiracy joins the show to claim his rightfully-earned Hall of Fame plaque.  We're in the thick of spooky season, and 2023 was one of the spookiest to date.  With UFO sightings and aliens abound, there was plenty that we had our eyes on this year.  We discuss the congressional hearings over the summer relating to UFO's - with Pentagon reports that the USA is receiving "dozens of UFO reports per month," what's up with the uptick this year?  We walk through some of the claims made by former Air Force intel officer David Grusch, who alleged that the USA is covering up UFO claims and harming those who come forward.  We discuss the possibilities of some major aircraft manufacturers experimenting with extra-terrestrial technologies, and the thought of some countries weaponizing them.  Con also takes us through the alien hoax in Mexico a few months ago, in which hoaxer Jaime Maussan claimed to have found 'non-human' bodies - we go over how this could discredit the UFO movement. Finally, we discuss the Natalee Holloway case - Joran van der Sloot finally admitted he killed Holloway in 2005 after denying it for years, attempting to extort the Holloway family for money in return for the location of the body.

You may have seen him getting praised by America's Got Talent judges on cable TV, or comparing the lyrics of "W.A.P." to "Baby It's Cold Outside" on TikTok, or donning a Providence or URI shirt on stage at a New York City comedy club.  Either way, you definitely know Tom Cotter.  In an exclusive interview with BBB's first ever comedian guest, Tom Cotter has us laughing like we've never done before on the show.  Tom takes us back to his days growing up in Providence, discovering his love for comedy at Denison University, and making it a full-time career.  As the first comedian ever to reach the finals of NBC's America's Got Talent, Tom's career rapidly took off - he collaborated with Jay Leno, Howard Stern, and other well-known comedians, as well as participating in an AGT Judge Roast of the late Joan Rivers.  We discuss what it takes to be a comedian in today's world and turning the "brand" of a comedian into a business.

BEERS: Will is fresh-off two beer festivals and has plenty of new beers to share with us, but one stood out as unique from Brew at the Zoo.  Japas Cervejaria, a Brazilian brewery founded by women of Japanese descent, created "Matsurika," a pilsner backed with tea and jasmine petals.  One of the more floral beers we've rated on the show, Matsurika scored high, especially considering its unique background.  Jake is almost wrapped up with the review of his Western tour, finishing us off with another baseball beer from Petco Park in San Diego.  Ballast Point, one of the more well-known breweries from Southern California, gave us "Swingin' Friar Ale," a crushable toast to the Padres with 100% Simcoe hops - a true home run for casual beers to drink at the ballpark.

BUSINESS: Apple has finally launched their iPhone 15 and a host of new products, but it comes with a big caveat - the new Apple products will switch over to USB-C charging, a departure from the Lightning technology that they invented years ago.  Will this help or hurt Apple, and will consumers rush to get new products given this new development?  We spend far too much time debating if we're brainwashed by Apple, and sucked in by their interest-free loans and Apple Card.

BALLS:  Week 1 of the NFL came and went, and without a doubt, the biggest storyline has been Aaron Rodgers tearing his Achilles tendon on the fourth play of his first game as a New York Jet.  What will the Jets do without him, and will we ever see him on the football field again?  What veteran quarterbacks could we seen on the field in place of Rodgers?  We go over some of the performances that we found impressive from Week 1, and give some bold predictions for next week.

BEERS: This week, it's two renowned breweries with locations that couldn't be farther apart from each other - Boston, MA and San Francisco, CA.  Will heads to Long Live Roxbury, one of Rhode Island's best breweries' latest project to expand further into the New England area. Will defies all odds and orders a sour, Hola Fantasma, and immediately declares it "the best sour he's ever had."  A bold take, but a valid one, as early reviews are fantastic.  Jake reviews a beer from his recent trip out west from Barebottle Brewing Company, a popular Bay Area selection.  In addition to their steep flight pours, their brews held up their end of the bargain.  Club Haus is on tap today - a light 4.3% "golf lager" was the perfect selection before a long flight home.

BUSINESS: The days of catching an Uber or Lyft when you arrive in a new (and mostly obscure) city may be gone.  Minneapolis is in the midst of a heated war with the two rideshare companies, as the city plans to introduce legislation that would mandate a certain rate per mile for rideshare drivers.  Uber and Lyft obviously have vested interests to push back on this, as they want to keep their rising costs under control.  What's to make of this feud?  Will Uber and Lyft actually make good on their threats to leave the city, or will they cave?  Will this spark the return of yellow cabs?

BEERS: The boys are back after a two-week hiatus!  We've been traveling all across the country and can't wait to share the great beer we've had along the way. First up, Jake takes us to Baltimore, where the beer was abundant at Camden Yards.  Duckpin Pale Ale, one of Baltimore's original craft beer selections, was one of the best beers of Jake's trip - perfect to slam a few back during an Orioles game (responsibly) and one of the most drinkable beers at MLB parks.  Will takes us down to the eastern coast of Rhode Island, where Pivotal Brewing Company is making some headlines with their recent craft beers.  "Hello My Name Is Pivotal" is the drink of choice, which is their flagship "opening day" IPA, standing bold at 8.4% with rave reviews across New England so far.

BUSINESS: ESPN and PENN made headlines over the past few weeks in a partnership that will change sports betting forever.  Just a few years after acquiring Barstool Sports, $PENN has announced it's sold all stakes in Barstool back to its founder, Dave Portnoy, for a 50% share in any future sales.  In return, ESPN has teamed up with PENN to launch ESPN Bet, a cutting-edge sports wagering platform to run across its verticals. What does this mean for both parties, and how does this blur the lines at ESPN with their journalism and their gambling content?  Will ESPN be in the market to sell anytime soon even with this partnership, or did this deal with PENN put them back on the right track?

BUSINESS: We cover a lot in this week's business segment. It's Prime Day, and all of a sudden it feels like everyone is in the party - Target, Walmart, and so many other big players are slashing prices left and right.  We break down some of the best deals, and when it makes sense to get something on Prime.  In quasi-business news, the New York Times announced their intention to strike their sports sections, replacing it with their talent from The Athletic, which they acquired last January.  What does this mean for the sports journalism world in this time of rapid change?  In a similar vain, layoffs are affecting ESPN - some of their top talent was canned over the past few weeks. We go over which sports outlets might snatch them up.

BALLS (46.25): Curtis Oakley Jr. grew up with high expectations.  The nephew of NBA All Star and 19-year veteran Charles Oakley, Curtis had basketball in his blood - the question became, where would it lead him?  Curtis discusses his journey with basketball - from Charles Brush High School in the Cleveland area, to getting recruited by a small D1 school on a hill in Smithfield, Rhode Island.  We discuss some of his favorite moments at Bryant, "The Shot Heard 'Round Smithfield," and getting to play against future NBA talent at UConn, Duke, and Indiana.  Curtis, who is currently excelling in an NBA career as an analytics manager with the League Operations group, takes us through his decision to chase his dream in professional basketball, and what went into his decision to get involved in the NBA.  We discuss his role with the up-and-coming Basketball Africa League, his dream job within the NBA, and advice for former college athletes that were once in his shoes.

This week, we got Whalers Brewing Company (6:05) on the pod! The way that Josh Dunlap & Wes Staschke met wasn't exactly the most conventional. This week, we’re joined by Gary Rogers, the Co-Founder and Chief of Business Operations over at True North Ales. A native of Boston’s North Shore, and a former teacher, lacrosse player, global sales leader, marketer for IBM, and traveler, Gary found his passion for beer in the many facets of his life. Back in 1984, he began homebrewing, and gained a taste of brewing in a commercial environment after winning a 2013 Ales for ALS Home Brewers Competition. As a reward, he collaborated with the brewmaster at Cape Ann Brewery to produce a 10-barrel batch of his own “Iron Horse Double-E IPA” recipe. The resulting product was sold to benefit the ALS charity at several local restaurants on Boston’s North Shore. We talk about how he started True North Ales with his son and how it’s developed into a family business. We dive into the award winning beer that is brewed, the transformation of the brand, and of course, a roundup on all things Boston sports.

When Chip Samson founded Shaidzon (23:47) with Josh Letourneau after he moved back to his home state of Rhode Island, he envisioned a cozy "garage brewery" that patrons from around the state could flock to and enjoy unique beers.  Now, Shaidzon is one of the more well-recognized beer brands in New England.  We joined Chip and Homer Johnsen - Shaidzon's Business Manager - for a discussion on their growth over the years live at their West Kingston brewery.  We discussed the early days of opening up, the origin of their signature Buffalo Czech pilsner, and the recent addition of a beer garden.  Of course, we also re-live Chip and Homer's past exciting gigs, including the handler of Colorado's own Ralphie the Buffalo.

Adam Hamway has had quite the career path in the acting and voice world. Manya Rubinstein (4:18) had always been passionate about bringing people together, and did just that when she founded Industrious Spirits Company (ISCO) as the first distillery in Providence since the prohibition era.
