Ep38 - Court Appointed Advocacy (with Leah Noble)

How often are you considering trauma during caregiver coaching, IEP meetings, and treatment protocols?
During today’s meal— I speak with a Court Appointed Special Advocate about the wins and challenges of the work she does, collaborating with large groups, and having the patience to navigate a slow system.
—
About Leah Noble
BA in Child Development w/ concentration in ECSE, MA in Teaching w/ specialization in ABA
Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. I was diagnosed with ADHD and Bipolar Depression in high school and placed on medication. I was kicked out of my traditional high school for my behavior and ended up graduating from a continuation school. Started at a local Jr. College and transferred to California State University, Northridge and graduated with my bachelor’s degree with my ultimate goal of being an inclusion specialist. I began working on my teaching credential and a master’s degree just after, however I lost my motivation and decided to continue working as a 1:1 in LAUSD for kiddos in special education until I found out about ABA and the BCBA license. I then began my journey at National University where I completed my master’s and course and field work to sit for my exam. I’ve sat 3 times and then became a mom.
Both my kids had significant expressive language delays and my life as a therapy mama began. Once both my kids were in preschool the opportunity to become a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) came available. This is something I had learned about in my undergraduate work and was on my bucket list for 18 years. I completed the training and was officially sworn in as an officer of children’s court in April 2019.
As a CASA, my primary role is to be a stable, safe adult and advocate in court for them to ensure that their voices are heard. While on my juvenile justice case, I was going into juvenile hall and while in there, I noticed that the staff was not supportive of helping these very vulnerable, traumatized children and began questioning why there was ZERO trauma informed practices and ZERO behavior support services being provided and these were the two very much needed supports not just for the kiddos, but the staff as well. I’d mentioned my observations to my youth’s legal team of 5 attorney’s (it’s a CSEC case) Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Regional Center, Los Angeles County of Education (LACOE) and Department of Mental Health (DMH) and continued to be told that Department of Probation wouldn’t allow ABA due to liability purposes.
This obviously made NO SENSE to me considering their other volunteer-based organizations were allowed into the halls to provide alternative forms of therapy i.e. music, art etc. While I absolutely agree that these are necessary supports, they are definitely not going to provide that support that behavioral services would. So this began my journey on how to figure out how to get these supports in there for the children and staff.

She obtained her Doctorate in Behavioral Health in 2023, a degree that focuses on issues that are impactful to today's healthcare systems such as integrated health, population health, trauma-informed care, and medical literacy. Her doctoral degree project focused on providing integrated behavioral gerontology within elderly care facilities.
As someone who has a younger sister diagnosed with cerebral palsy, she saw the value in ABA therapy for clients and their families. However, she recognized that there is a need for an integrative and person-centered approach to care for clients and their family.
Pauline, alongside her husband who is a nurse, Benjamin, decided to build Symphony Behavioral Health, a family and clinician owned company that focuses on addressing gaps in care by providing quality services to our clients, and quality support to our team members.
Pauline is also the co-founder of Asian, Pacific Islanders, and Behavior Analysis. This group aims to disseminate the science of ABA within the Asian and Pacific Islander population, as well as promote diversity within the field to better serve diverse clients. The organization advocates for API representation through promotion and dissemination of work produced by API professionals. Pauline hopes that her lived experience as a Filipino immigrant as well as her professional knowledge will help her goal of supporting the API community.

About Jenny Owens M.S., BCBA-LBA
“After studying psychology with the intention of becoming a therapist, I started interning at an adult mental health facility my senior year of college. I was struck by how many people had been receiving treatment for 10, 20, 30 years and didn't seem to feel better. I had a total identity crisis when I realized I didn't think the traditional therapy model was fulfilling its promise to clients. As a "what the heck do I do now" move, I answered an ad on craigslist and got a job in ABA in 2010.
I got my masters in Behavior Analysis from the Chicago School in 2014 and became a BCBA in 2015. I've supervised home, clinic, and school services. I've had the most incredible mentors in our field and spent years learning how to incorporate ACT into our clinical practice to help address our own burnout and that of RBTs, and how to implement ACT based programs to better serve our clients and their parents.
A little over a year ago, after 5 years as a clinical director I started to feel the "are we really doing our best for our clients" itch again. I made the decision to re-approach how I program, how I interact with my clients, how I teach, how I work with parents, and how I structure my life as a BCBA. It became very clear to me that in order to practice ethically and effectively I had to be choosy about how to spend my time. For me that means only doing clinical work that feels really meaningful.
I consult with agencies, work part time for companies that share my values, teach ethics in behavior analysis as an adjunct professor at St. Edwards university, supervise a small number of BCBA candidates, run social skills groups that go beyond teaching simple observable prosocial behaviors, and work privately with parents seeking support whose children don't have a diagnosis or no longer qualify for traditional ABA. I also have a few clients doing ACT based health and fitness coaching, though this isn't something I really advertise anymore.”

Ep10 - A Hound That Won’t Tree (with Dr. Mari-Luci Cerda) - Part 1
Have you ever been crushed under the weight of not only your ambitious dream, but the grinding realization that others might be actively working against you?
Mari-Luci Cerda, PhD, BCBA, LBA is a Mesoamerican Indigenous woman, wife, mom, Autist, and board-certified behavior analyst with over 13 years experience working with Neurodivergent individuals and their families.
A former special education teacher, behavior specialist, and inclusion coordinator of 13 years—Mari has a deep passion for advocacy work with both schools and clinics to develop trauma-responsive, neurodiversity responsive practices. Her work focuses on shifting language and systems used in practice to reframe and move away from unintentional ableist frameworks that are often rooted in traditional therapy and educational settings. Much of this work pulls from IRM (Indigenous Research Methods) and models of care rooted in Cultural Safety and Responsiveness.
She recently opened her own trauma-responsive center, The Lighthouse Learning Center in Lubbock, TX with the goal of creating a model of true neurodiversity affirming and assent-based practices. Mari is also the co-founder of the The LEAP Institute, a non-profit with a mission to address the disparity of diverse practitioners in the ABA field.

Ep8 - Being Flexible (with Jordan Litt)
Don’t you want your Continuing Education to be fun and relatable?
Today’s guest, Jordan Litt, is the Co-Founder of CEUs by Study Notes ABA. We discuss flexibility, how you can actually learn a lot from fellow colleagues, and also, what’s her beef with those talking-dog buttons?
Jordan is a BCBA, LBA-NYS and the ACE Coordinator and Co-Founder of CEUs by Study Notes ABA. Her start in behavior analysis wasn’t a straight shot to learning. In the beginning, she really struggled to find her footing until the day she was introduced to Verbal Behavior (the approach and book by B.F. Skinner). From then on, she has worked each and every day to cultivate her skills and knowledge of the science of behavior analysis. Jordan worked in a variety of environments that have taught her the true value of generalization.
What truly lights Jordan up is helping other people understand more from “simple” to advanced concepts, because she thinks that's also one of the barriers to being a good BCBA. Accepting the fact that concepts/ideas are advanced for a reason means that she’s going to have to study it, it's not going to be cut and dry, there will always be things she doesn’t quite understand, and so she must keep on learning. This is the hard part. But it’s also the fun part!
On the rare occasions when she’s not doing all things CEUs by SNABA related, you can find her hanging out with her dog Moose.
