BMT EP 142: NYC Run Club Series featuring BedStuy Flyers

Join the conversation as Dr. Sean Thomas continues a year long series featuring the amazing groups who make up the NYC running club culture. This week's featured Club is Bedstuy Flyers. BedStuy Flyers was created as a way for people of various backgrounds and abilities to share space, work hard, have fun and always uplift each other along the way.  They believe that running should be accessible, safe and equitable, in Bedford-Stuyvesant and beyond. They have members at all levels, from those who walk the track to multi-marathon finishers. You can join them for free group runs on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Coaches Tara Mardigan, a nutritionist and certified RRCA coach, also known as the plate coach, founded BedStuy Flyers in March 2017 to create an open and informal track workout in Bedford-Stuyvesant. After a job loss in 2016, she wanted to keep to a routine and would head to the track at Boys and Girls High School in Bed-Stuy on a weekly basis. She was inspired by the speed workouts she had done with Nike Run Clubs, in both Boston and NYC. A member of the November Project free fitness movement since 2012, she knew that accountability and community-building were a recipe for success and started inviting friends to her Track Tuesdays.  Nick Collins is a certified RRCA coach. He is also co-president of our sister club, Crown Heights Running Club, a proud NYC marathoner, and participant in the broader NYC running community.  Nick joined Bedstuy Flyers at its inception, energized by a supportive community showing up year-round and giving their best. These days his favorite Friday night activity is eating pizza with the team to plan upcoming workouts, and his favorite moment on the track is darting across to the 200m mark to time those rests! BMT EP 125: “It's Gotta Be The Soles“ featuring founder and Owner of Cadence Insoles John Hinds, PT

Episode 125 of the Be More Today Show features Physical Therapist and Founder/Owner of Cadence Insoles John Hinds. Check out our conversation regarding the right how orthotics can help reduce foot pain, some entrepreneurial tips for starting your own business, and why Physical Therapy is one of the best professions in the world.

Cadence Insoles: "I like to say the insole connects your foot to the shoe. There are a lot of great shoes on the shelves with wonderful midsoles, outsoles, and beautiful styles and visuals, with different levels of cushion and “comfort- but your foot sits on the insole. Although still obsessed with footwear and insoles, I understand that everybody is different and not everybody will benefit from, or “needs”, insoles or Cadence. I will never claim that Cadence (or any one device) is going to cure everything that walks through the door. There are a lot of variables and personal preference that goes into fitting for comfort just as there are a lot of variables when working with an overuse injury or other pain syndromes: variables such as activity modification (freq., duration, volume of training or work duties), individual mobility, strength, conditioning, and recovery strategies (among others). But footwear and a good insole (when appropriate) should be included among of those variables, and they’re 2 variables that often provide immediate results." John Hinds

EP 114: "Faith, Family, and Fitness" featuring Pastor and Community Builder Lawrence Adjah, MBA, M.ED, M.Div

Lawrence E. Adjah is a Community Builder and Host serving at the nexus of Business, Faith, and Community Wellness.   Lawrence builds communities and hosts conversations that unite, heal and transform lives. Lawrence serves as the Founder and Chairman of the Family Dinner Foundation whose mission is to connect the world as a family at and beyond the dinner table. Beginning with its first initiative, Our Family Dinner in 2008, which reached nearly 50K young professionals around the world, its work has expanded to empowering an ecosystem of initiatives dedicated to connecting brothers and sisters as a family beyond the dinner table.  In a time where many of us are mediating our lives behind a computer screen and are living in cities without strong pre-existing relationships, Lawrence became burdened by the sleeping giant of our time: loneliness.  Observing that we’ve become more digitally connected than we’ve ever been, yet more isolated and disconnected interpersonally than ever before, it became his mission to address this growing issue. He believes that we were never meant to do life alone and that it is vital for people to have a space where they can build lifelong, life-sustaining relationships.  Through his experience in business and community building, he became convinced the solution to this challenge is as much a spiritual matter as it is a civic, social, and technological opportunity. He pursued formal theological education and training and became an ordained Pastor and spiritual counselor who brings this foundation into every aspect of his approach to community building, business and life.  Lawrence currently hosts two shows, Watch God Work, a show featuring leaders from all arenas of business, entertainment, civic leadership and culture sharing their “God Stories” and A2D (Agree2Disagree) a weekly conversation that intentionally tackles the “the challenging conversations” in our community we are having or need to have in our families, friendships and/or romantic relationships.  Lawrence began his career as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company in its New York office, helping to serve some of the world’s largest professional sports organizations and media companies. Prior to joining McKinsey, he was a nationally ranked track and field competitor through college, where he entered as a National Champion & HS All-American.  After McKinsey, Lawrence served as the Senior Director of Business Development at a premiere sports and entertainment marketing agency in New York.  Lawrence has served as a trusted Executive Advisor and Counselor to business leaders, from C-suite executives to solo lead small business owners, with nearly 15 years of experience through his firm, Adjah.  He's also a licensed and ordained Pastor, a Prepare + Enrich Certified Marriage Counselor, and Spiritual Coach & Trainer, who also leads the world's first gospel-based spiritual gym, Foundation JC. Lawrence serves as an Advisory Board Member and Former President of the Board of Directors for The Harvard Black Alumni Society (HBAS). Lawrence also serves on the Board of Directors for the Urbanworld Film Festival and the national Board of New City Kids. He’s also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc.  Lawrence holds a B.A., from Harvard University, an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, an M.Ed from The University of Texas at Austin with distinction and a Masters of Divinity (M.Div) from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
