S2 EP11

On this episode, Jared, Tyler and Brett get into a quiet week in the NHL as well as some other crazy stories around the hockey world.

There was a very scary incident on Thursday night during the Niagra IceDogs and London Knights game. Tucker Tynan, goalie for the IceDogs, was rushed to hospital after a gory scene where his leg was sliced open during a freak accident in front of the net.

We discuss two more firings in the NHL as well. Jim Montgomery and Peter Deboer have been relieved of their duties. Bit of a surprise in Dallas as the team was playing well but this is a Code of Conduct firing. Few details were given so what exactly he did remains a mystery. San Jose has been a tire fire on the other hand and the Deboer firing was less than surprising.

For the first time in years Tim Thomas was in the news. This time was for a good reason that turned very dim. He was recently inducted in to the US Hockey Hall of Fame and during his press conference revealed some terrifying details about his life after hockey.

Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy.

On this episode, Jared, Tyler and Brett get into the last week in the NHL.

First off, the Flames and new coach Geoff Ward are making adjustments that have started to pay off. The new look lines actually produced on Thursday night and Milan Lucic finally got his first goal as a Flame.

The Sharks had an eventful few days this week as well. First up Evander Kane got tossed for a very harmless looking play, that was reviewed and upheld by the referees. He was also fined by the NHL for this while a couple days later Jumbo Joe got into it with Petr Mrazek and dropped him with a throat punch and received no supplemental discipline.

Naturally we got into more of the coaching mess that is the NHL right now with more Babcock stories and now Marc Crawford is on the hot seat. Another very strange incident also popped up on Friday as Nikita Zaitsev of the Senators has been accused, by his Ex-Wife, of kidnapping his two children while he was back in Russia a few weeks ago.

We also touch on some of the Taylor Hall trade rumours and what we expect to see soon enough.

Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy.

On this episode, Jared, Tyler and Brett get the last week in the NHL.

The episode starts off with the main topic from this week. The Akim Aliu allegations towards Bill Peters, the Calgary Flames Head Coach, for racists comments made 10 years ago. Friday morning he officially resigned from the Flames organization.

After that we get into our American Thanksgiving playoff predictions as well as touch on some of the other news around the NHL. This year, we actually make legitimate predictions, unlike last year.

Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy.

On this episode, Jared, Tyler and Blair get into an interesting.

The Flames and Leafs have had two very similar Novembers. Both had 6 game losing streaks without the ability to score the first goal of a game. Where the similarities end though is how they are attempting to fix it. The Leafs have fired Mike Babcock while the Flames continue to look for a solution. Firing Peters does not seem to be an option.

The Islanders are currently rocking a 16-game point streak where they have won 15 games. With only 20 total games played this season, they are absolutely on fire and Barry Trotz is looking like a wizard.

The episode ends with a chat about two incredible saves from Marc-Andre Fleury and Tuukka Rask where we debate on which save is better. We also touch on the terrible stadium series jerseys for this years NHL outdoor games.

Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy.

On this episode, Jared and Tyler get into some of big stories across the NHL.

The Oilers are still cruising along and crushing the NHL but will I continue. Draisaitl and McDavid have combined for more points than the rest of the roster combined. Surely this can’t be the a recipe for success.

One of the funniest moments in the NHL happened on Tuesday night. The Canucks gave up a 3 on 0 to the St. Louis Blues in overtime on one of the strangest plays you will see.

The Leafs and Flames have turned their struggles into some decent play finally while the Winnipeg Jets keep getting crushed by the injury bug with no end in site. Plus the Boyz get into some of the other action around the NHL and the announcement of the 2020 NHL Global Series.

Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy.

NHL off season update with Tyler and Jared

Aug 17, 201901:41:34

S1 EP38

On the final episode of the season, Jared and Tyler are joined by our special guest Brent to discuss the NHL free agent frenzy.

First up the Leafs were active on the trade front trying to bolster their d-core while shedding some contracts. Zaitsev and Brown headed to Ottawa for Cody Ceci while Kadri is on the move to Colorado for Tyson Barrie. Mitch Marner is still unsigned and even after all these moves there still might not be enough money left over to get him under contract for next season.

Monday actually produced the first offer sheet of the summer that has basically been talked about since Christmas. While it was nice to have the drama, many feel that Montreal blew it with their offer to Sebastian Aho of the Hurricanes. Carolina reported they were in the process of matching the contract and keeping Aho as a Hurricane which is pretty much a no brainer.

Free Agent Frenzy produced over 90 contracts July 1stthis year. The New York Rangers won the Panarin sweepstakes, Florida landed Bobrovsky, and Nashville signed Matt Duchene. We discuss these signings and many of the others to close out the episode.

We thank everyone for joining us throughout our first season as the Bench Boyz and we hope to see you next year. Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy this episode.

S1 EP37

On this episode, Jared and Tyler discuss the NHL draft and the official start of free agency.

After being hyped up as one of the busiest draft days we have seen in a long time, day 1 of the draft was a dud. With just a single trade that only involved teams swapping picks it was quite the let down. Day 2 saw some actual player movement before and during the draft but the damage was already done for the weekend.

William Karlsson was the first big RFA to come off the board this week as Vegas inked him to an eight-year, $5.9 million dollar per season deal. This will probably be one of those pretty good team friendly deals when all is said and done.

Next up, we discuss the bulk of the NHL’s list of RFAs that need new contracts this summer. There’s lots of Canadian content on this list but definitely a couple of surprises as well. Offer sheets are also top of mind when it comes to this list as most of the media has brought up time and time again and we give our thoughts on what we think will happen.

Last but not least, the UFA class of 2019 ends our episode. Seems a little lackluster without Erik Karlsson topping that list but there is still plenty of talent looking to get overpaid this year. As was said multiple times in the episode, the amount of NHL defenseman this year is driving the price through the roof, so it’s definitely not a good time to be a team struggling with your back end.

Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy the episode.

S1 EP36

On this episode, Jared and Tyler discuss the week that was around the NHL as well as the upcoming draft.

First off, the NHL awards were on Wednesday night and it was the usual awkward event. Mark Giordano walked away with his first career Norris trophy, while Nikita Kucherov seemed like he won the rest of the awards on the night.

Fireworks started early this week as a few teams looked to relieve themselves of some of their cap issues. Winnipeg dealt Trouba to the Rangers, Pittsburgh sent Olli Maatta to the Blackhawks and San Jose traded Justin Braun to the Flyers this week ahead of the draft where we may see a bunch more trades before all is said and done.

We also had some big pending free agents come off the board this week. Erik Karlsson signed a massive $92 million-dollar, eight year deal with San Jose and Kevin Hayes decided to stay in Philly with a seven year, 7.14 AAV. Yikes!

Arguably the largest, most high profile RFA of the off season was also in the news this week. Mitch Marner is reportedly asking the Maple Leafs for Austin Matthews money, roughly 11.6 million per season, while the Leafs have potentially offered the super star 11 million by eight years. That is possibly not good enough for Marner however as it’s rumoured that he has declined that offer.

Finally, the NHL Entry Draft starts on Friday which is what was expected to be the focus of this episode.  With the Jets receiving their pick back in the Trouba deal, six of seven Canadian teams are now drafting in the first round with the Leafs as the only team not stepping up to the podium.

Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy the episode.

On this episode, Jared, Brett and Tyler chat about the final games of the Stanley Cup Finals. Congratulations to the St. Louis Blues for an outstanding run and an amazing season. It’s truly a Hollywood comeback story that they’ve written this year. We highlight the play of Ryan O’Reilly, who won the Conn Smythe for playoff MVP, and of course Jordan Binnington, who had an amazing game 7, and a historic run as a rookie goaltender. We also give lots of praise to Zdeno Chara and Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins. It was an exciting 7 game series; something we haven’t seen since 2011. Thanks for listening and we hope you enjoy.

S1 EP34

Welcome to the June 5th episode of the Bench Boyz podcast. On this episode, Jared and Tyler discuss game 3 and 4 of the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals and some of the other news and trade rumours around the league.

Saturday night was anything but a pleasure for St. Louis as they got pumped 7-2 by the Bruins. Binnington was not his usual self and let in some fairly bad goals that really hurt the Blues. One in particular was really bad, a soft shot from just inside the blue line that lead to a failed offside challenge and another goal against, basically sealing it for Boston.

Game 4 was a much different story for both teams. A great back and forth game with lots of chances and some great goal tending by Tukka Rask saw the game come down to the final minutes just like in game 2. St. Louis ended up tying the series at two games a peice but the big story is Zdeno Chara’s potential broken jaw.

Also this week the NHL ruled in favor of Evgeny Kuznetsov and his excuse for being photographed in the same picture as some “white powder” while in Vegas over the summer. The Erik Karlsson rumours are starting on where he could possibly be signing on July 1st and Sean Avery stirred up the hockey world when he went on Instagram and claimed he knew of a trade involving “Nazeem” Kadri and Jacob “Troubda”

Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy.

On this episode, Jared and Tyler get into the end of the third round of the playoffs and preview the Stanley Cup Final.

The St Louis Blues finished off the Sharks this week in 6 games. The last couple games weren’t very close on the scoreboard but it was still a very entertaining series and leads us to a fantastic cup final matchup.

After previewing the Stanley Cup Final we look at some of the off-season moves from around the rest of the NHL. Brock Nelson signed himself a nice new deal, Phil Kessel trade watch is back for another summer and Ottawa finally lands their new coach.

Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy.

S1 EP31

On this episode, Jared and Tyler get into the third round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs which of course includes some video review or lack there of. Seems like I don’t even need to write new episode intro’s anymore.

The big news in the NHL is the game winning goal from Wednesday night in the Blues/Sharks game. Erik Karlsson scored in OT off a clear hand pass from Timo Meier. Naturally the video review crowd is up in arms again and for good reason, this is another blatant game changing missed call going the Sharks way.

As we were recording, the Boston Bruins eliminated the Hurricanes in another sweep in the Eastern side of the playoffs. Crazy that 2 teams that had previously swept a team have gotten swept the following round. Producer Brett finally joins us while we discuss this and our thoughts on the potential Stanley Cup Finals.

This week the NHL finally released their top three finalists for the GM of the year with one surprise omission maybe even two.

Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy.

On this episode, Jared, Tyler and Brett discuss the end of the second round in the Stanley Cup Playoffs which of course includes some video review.

We get into the heartbreak in Colorado after a tough offside review as well as some goalie interference reviews that actually seemed to go the right way for once.

This leads us into the Bruins/Blue Jackets series and the end of a somewhat historic season for Columbus

Next we touch on the Hurricanes sweep of the Islanders and move on to the great finish in St. Louis. Not much more you can ask for out of a game 7 than double OT. Ben Bishop had quite the rebound game after his tough night in game 6.

After that we look at our predictions for the 3rd round and our breakdowns of what we expect to see over the next two weeks.

The episode ends on a bit of a somber note as we discuss the Oilers new hiring of Ken Holland and the news that came out about their owner, Darryl Katz.

Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy.

S1 EP29

On this episode, Jared, Brent and Tyler discuss some of the craziness that’s happening early in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs but first we get a chance to talk about our favorite team, the Edmonton Oilers. Their GM search took a big hit on Thursday with the announcement that assumed front runner for the job Kelly McCrimmon is taking over as GM in Vegas.

Next up is the Brad Marchand sucker punch from game 3 on Scott Harrington. We try and give our thoughts on all this over blown narrative on social media and around the league.

Another week and another pair of performances for the NHL Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Game 3 of the Stars/Blues series saw Esa Lindell make not one, not two, but THREE awful dives in a row. Not to be out done however, during game 4, Ben Bishop tried to get his name in the mix again by acting as if he lost the use of his legs when he got a bit of a slash in the back from David Perron.

We discuss what this second round looks like after all the crazy upsets in the first round. With all the underdogs and Cinderella teams it seems like there isn’t much of a draw to watch some of these series, especially Carolina and the Islanders. This has got to be one of the least entertaining series that we have seen in a very long time.

We finish up by talking about the San Jose/Colorado series and how San Jose looks like they are the better team as long as they get solid goaltending from Martin Jones.

As usual we get side tracked plenty of times along the way but we’re happy you tuned in and we hope you enjoy the episode.

This episode is all about the end of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Brent, Jared and Tyler start out discussing that crazy finish to the Vegas/San Jose series as well as our thoughts on the major penalty on Eakins and the potential for video reviews on incidents like this.

Next up is the less than surprising finish to the Leafs/Bruins series and a breakdown of who’s to blame and should Mike Babcock still be behind the bench next season.

It feels like forever ago since the Jets and Flames were eliminated from the playoffs but the boyz get into those two series while trying to figure out how and why they ended up this way and how they can avoid this fate next year.

The episode wraps up trying to predict this bizarro land second round. Brent managed to finish the first round with a perfectly opposite bracket, impressive, but he tries to avoid going O-fer for a second straight round this time.

This episode definitely gets heated at times so buckle up and we hope you enjoy.

Jared, Tyler, and Brett breakdown the first week of the Stanley Cup Playoffs including Ovechkins knockout from Monday night on one of the NHLs rookie of the year candidates.

We also touch on a couple of suspensions that were handed out from hits over the weekend as well as another goalie interference review that left some people lost for words, including the San Jose Sharks.

Tampa and Pittsburgh were on the verge of being swept as we recorded this episode, which is crazy thinking back to our playoff preview episode last week where the three of us all picked these two teams to make it into the second round or beyond.

After that we discuss the Flames and Jets and the two distinctly different feelings going into their respective game fours.

Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy the episode.

On our special Playoff Preview edition, Tyler, Jared and Brett discuss the upcoming NHL playoffs.

We start the episode with a look at the Quenneville hiring down in Florida as well as touch on a couple of the other coaching vacancies in the NHL.

Next up we were live watching the NHL Draft Lottery and gave you our thoughts on the biggest winners and losers.

After that, it’s time for us to choose our playoff brackets and break down our choices series by series, round by round. There’s definitely some big series coming up in the next couple weeks and months but all three of us have different Stanley Cup Finals predictions and we’re all most likely wrong.

To cap off the episode the boyz get into the criticism that we’ve been seeing and hearing regarding the current playoff format. Needless to say, we think it’s here to stay, and for very good reason.

Thanks for tuning in to the episode, we hope you enjoy.

Final regular season edition of the Bench Boyz Podcast. On this episode Jared, Tyler and Brett start out with a big congratulations to the Calgary Flames for clinching first place in the Western Conference this week. Should make for some entertaining hockey in the Saddledome in the coming weeks, and hopefully months.

Next up is the incredibly tight playoff races in both the East and Western conferences. Tuesday night was the start of a crazy final week in the NHL and it did not disappoint, the LA Kings of all teams put the nail in the coffin for the Coyotes, while the Habs and Hurricanes picked up some big wins to tighten up the race out East.

We follow that up by turning back to our playoff predictions from American Thanksgiving. Some of our predictions were right on the money, some of them however were incredibly awful.

Our weekend preview is short and sweet with the end of the season coming on Saturday night but the playoff season is right around the corner and we can’t wait!

Tyler and Jared are joined by Brett who is stepping out the shadows and into the spotlight to talk some hockey.

We start out talking some poor play by the Maple Leafs and the Flames while we get closer and closer to playoff time. Like most fans we’re looking for a lot more out of our teams at this time of the season while teams like the Lightning and Jets are just ramping up.

After that we get into the week's hot topic, Paul Byron and Mackenzie Weegar’s fight which was in retaliation to a hit and subsequent suspension early in the season. We discuss the code and whether or not Byron should have had to answer the bell from a player like Weegar.

We touch on some very weird news in senators land. Recently there have been some oddly specific and robotic twitter accounts popping up and tweeting a lot of praise towards the Sens.

This episode’s weekend look ahead includes a lot of tough matchups for the team’s trying to make the playoffs and a few big measuring stick games for the teams that are already locked in.

Thanks for checking out the Bench Boyz, we hope you enjoy.

On this episode Tyler, Jared and Brent start by discussing that great game between the Lightning and Capitals on Wednesday night. This could potentially be the Eastern Conference Final we see in May which we would all definitely sign up for.

Next up we get into some of the other possible playoff matchups we could see in the next couple weeks especially in the Atlantic and Pacific divisions.

The Oilers are back in the news again, and it’s not for a good reason. Their annual meeting with season ticket holders was Wednesday and Bob Nicholson went on quite the rant about Tobias Rieder.

We also discuss the annual NHLPA player’s pole. From who is the league's best player to best nickname in the NHL there is some interesting debates to be had.

As usual we end our episode with a fairly quiet weekend of action compared to the last couple we’ve seen but there are plenty of big points on the line this weekend.

Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy.

On this episode Tyler and Jared are joined again by Brent to talk about this weeks past NHL events.

First we get into the rough week that was for the Toronto Maple Leafs. A couple poor efforts and a couple big losses and things aren’t looking so pretty in T. O.

Next up is the most recent game for the Flames from Tuesday night when they exploded for 6 goals in the third against the injury riddled Devils. We also touch on Connor McDavid hitting the 100 point mark for the third season in a row while still searching for a second trip to the playoffs.

With only 3 full weeks left in the NHL season we take a look at the playoff races in the Eastern and Western conferences. This leads to us comparing some of the current Stanley Cup contenders to the Chicago Blackhawks and their amazing run of Cup victories.

We almost forget to talk about Carey Price hitting his newest milestone with the Montreal Canadiens. With his victory on Tuesday night, he is now the winningest goalie in Canadiens history with 315 career wins in 614 games played.

And of course, we finish the episode with a preview of the weekends schedule of games and this weekend should not disappoint.

After that we move on to some more Leafs and Flames content from Wednesday night. The flames finally broke Marc Andrea Fluery’s amazing shutout streak while the Leafs and Canucks sparked some controversy pre-game during their moment of silence for the recently passed Ted Lindsay.

The Blue Jackets are still on the outside looking in and made an interesting decision with they’re starting lineup prior to their game against Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Finally, we get to the Senators where they fired Guy Bouche last Friday. They just can’t seem to stay out of the news lately.

And of course we end our episode with a look at the great weekend schedule of games.
