Episode 12: The Latest Understanding on Heel Spurs
In this episode we discuss the enigma that is heel spurs. Do they cause plantar heel pain? Are they significant? Should we worry about them or should we ignore them? Do they matter? Why do some people get them?
If you've pondered these questions then this episode is likely to be of interest to you.
Here is a recommended article to supplement some of the topics discussed in this episode.
Episode 11: Does Isolated Gastrocnemius Tightness Cause Plantar Fasciitis?
In this episode we take at a look at a paper published in Foot & Ankle International 2017 investigating the association between plantar fasciitis and isolated gastrocnemius tightness. You can find a link to the paper here
Episode 10: Orthoses vs Corticosteroid Injection for Plantar Fasciitis
In this episode we review a paper just published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy (JOSPT) comparing foot orthoses with corticosteroid injection. This study is an RCT with a sound methodology which should serve as a guide for clinicians on what short term outcomes to expect with both these interventions.

Episode 09: Plantar Fascia Rupture Risk Associated with Corticosteroid Injection
Do corticosteroid injections lead to plantar fascia rupture? What is the risk and is it worth it? In this episode we take a look at a review article investigating plantar fascia rupture rates in patients that had received corticosteroid injections.

Episode 08: Pathology of Plantar Fasciitis: Degenerative or Inflammatory?
In this episode we review one of the most cited research papers published on plantar fasciitis and cover the underlying pathological processes involved in this condition. You can find a link to the article here.
Episode 07: Overview of Shockwave Therapy
Have you considered offering shockwave therapy to your heel pain patients but don't know much about shockwave therapy or how it works? Should you use focused or radial shockwave therapy? Does shockwave therapy work for plantar heel pain?
In this episode, we take a look at the historical development of shockwave therapy and the different types of technology used to produce shockwave therapy machines. We also cover the key differences between focused and radial shockwave therapy and my own personal experience using radial shockwave therapy for heel pain.
If you want to learn more about the physics of shockwaves here is an excellent resource provided by the International Society for Medical Shockwave Treatment.
Here is a link to the two videos mentioned in the episode by Benoy Matthew and Paul Hobrough explaining the differences between radial and focused shockwave therapy.
Episode 06: Plantar Fasciotomy vs Gastroc Recession
In this episode we take a second look at gastroc release surgery for plantar fasciitis and compare this relatively novel procedure to the more traditional plantar fasciotomy. The paper featured in this episode was published in International Orthopaedics in 2013 titled 'Chronic plantar fasciitis: plantar fasciotomy versus gastrocnemius recession'. You can find the article link here
Also featured in this episode is a mention of the 10 key biomechanical functions of the plantar fascia as described by Kevin Kirby. You can find a link to his article published in Podiatry Today here
Episode 05: PRP vs PPP Injections for Plantar Fasciitis
PRP is a fashionable treatment option for various MSK conditions in the world of sports medicine but how good is PRP compared to regular autologous blood? Do you need to invest in an expensive fancy blood spinning machine? In this episode we review the latest research on blood injection therapy for plantar fasciitis. Check out this weeks episode to find out more.

Episode 03: RCT on Custom Foot Orthoses for Plantar Fasciitis
Foot orthoses are one of the most common treatment options used by podiatrists to treat patients with plantar fasciitis, however as we all know, foot orthoses come in many different shapes, sizes, and materials.
In this episode we review a randomised controlled trial published in 2018 investigating the role of custom foot orthoses for plantar fasciitis.

Episode 02: The Role of Hamstring Tightness in Plantar Fasciitis
The role of calf muscle tightness in plantar fasciitis is well established, but what about the role of hamstring tightness? Are we missing a trick by ignoring the role of hamstring tightness or is it irrelevant?
Find out in this episode of The Heel Pain Expert Podcast where we will look at a paper published in 2011 investigating the role of hamstring tightness in plantar fasciitis.
