Episode 122, Art of Racing in the Rain
The book which was also made into a movie is, The Art of Racing in the Rain. A great story, and as a dog lover and go-kart driver, this one was a quick read for Diego.
He got to read about struggles over problems, big ones that took time to recover from. All of us will endure some hurdles both big and small, but by keeping our aim focused, we can come out of the other side.
We briefly touch on Arnold's book, which I'll probably come back to in future episodes once entire book is finished.

Episode 121, Delete It
Happy Sunday, today Sofia and I have a short catch up as her first appearance from our new home. She has really taken up crocheting which has been so great to see. It requires focus and patience, and also creativity and homework. YouTube amazes with so many how to resources and fun tutorials, huge help with faster progress.
Short but sweet, I hope you can find time for your hobbies you enjoy also.

Episode 120, Big History
Today we have settled back into home, now being the dry season in Panamá. More wind which is definitely welcome, if this is our new winter I'm happy.
-----
We dove a bit into the book Big History by David Christian, who has it as a Great Course HERE. Barely into the first lectures as we skimmed through was good enough to attempt at reaching at the gravity of our unimaginably short time frames here as humans in our present form, in our current ways of being societies. Seems so strange to know our entire ways of life for several generations will be looked at as yet another phase of existence, to one day be entirely different.

Take care and as always,

Episode 119, Bold Return

Episode 118, Panamá
At last, we're back and can begin to share what living at an Expat is like so far. There is always more details, and we did record one with both kids that didn't make it, but here we are. Its been quite an experiential almost 4 months.
A book is in progress for the next one, but for now, we take some time so share what is current for us here in Panamá.
Hope you enjoy it, and thank you for your time.

Episode 117, SEC vs CRYPTO
Another one to go along with episodes 79 and 105. Things change quickly and there is a mountain range of information, so staying focused with precision and learning before jumping to the next thing has been key. I'm eager to learn about another network besides the XRPL called the Casper Network, but will not dedicate time to it until my head is fully around all the new functionalities it has. A network built for speed and payments, with an automated market maker and decentralized exchange at the base layer is a very, very, powerful tool for what it was made for.
------
It has a clear operating use case that will grow in capacity and can handle growth far beyond what it does now, which is already astounding. We are all watching the backbone of the financial systems worldwide get a new bones. Most of us won't even notice we're using blockchain mechanisms, but we will.
------
I have listened to many conversations, forums, podcasts, etc of 30+ year banking veterans say this massive of a change comes once in a lifetime. Payments will be settled as fast as emails. And the big banks want to capture all the traffic like they do now, which is why they are fighting to crush everyone, bring all value back in-house, then re-release it with their white labeled packages.
------
Regardless of what I discuss, as it could all change in a few weeks, its all quite interesting and eye opening.
Episode 116, The Next Episode
Embarking on the next chapter of life, by the time this podcast is available I'll be on a plane with our two dogs headed to Panama City, Panamá where I'll meet up with my family to live some life in Latin America as we have always wanted to do. I expect obstacles and hurdles, but also expect fun and new found freedom. Its been a very busy 8 months leading up to this day, and it already feels entirely worth it, as its challenged and tested our ability to focus and work together for what we value most......time.

Episode 115, Kalyani Sundaresan
Today we sat with Kalyani Sundaresan. She is a software architect and lead with strong full stack skills. But she is here with us because she was also Sofia's first official sewing teacher, and shared this skill passed down from a long family history, full of hand crafting skill sets that used to be more commonplace.
-------
And her love of creating and finding her renewed passion for the art of design came alive only a few years ago, even having come from a home where clothes were created out of necessity. This is inspiring to see as she is far along in her technical career, but has gravitated to expressing herself through bespoke tailoring and will continue to expand her designs and creations.
-------
Kalyani also shared some insight into what an arranged marriage is really like, and the differences between having a large support system for marriage and what she sees here in America not only in regards to marriage but to families and friendships alike. It was eye opening for me, and a great opportunity to learn about how those intricacies work.
-------
She is so full of positive energy and enthusiasm, it was an honor to have her here and share time with the both of us.
Enjoy and Be Healthy Yall

Episode 113, Ralph Berendzen
As I continue with some hereditary history and family tree stories, we were leading up to this conversation with my Dad to keep giving past context to our family history. This lets the kids know who came before them, and a chance to learn that each generation lives very differently and lives take some twists and turns.
And some people have bobcats for pets, or something like that, but hey, its Texas. The kids listen to him on their own, then my Dad and I get to spend some time just bouncing around as conversations do. He's a healthy 71 year old cancer survivor, and happy to have caught this one while he was here for Grandparent's Day at the kids' schools.

Episode 112, Papa Patton
More reading from some of my Papa's stories, this one about his grandfather, Papa Patton. We'll read from his time in the army next.
Nice to share these short memoirs as he did intend them to be shared, and short vignettes from any life are cool to hear I think.
Take care and Be Healthy Yall, like my Papa who maintained good health and mobility until the end.

Episode 111, Grandpa B
This will be beginning of a few podcasts where I read from my grandfather's letters of stories of himself, his grandparents, parents, and his grandparents. My Berendzen side of the family apparently have all on some level left traces of history from each generation for the next to read and connect with those that came before them. I look forward to hearing the kids' responses when I go through some together with them.

Episode 110, Victoria Padron
Joined by a baking enthusiast, all around hard worker and dog loving super woman, Victoria Padron today! This was officially Sofia's first podcast with a guest just for her, and I was so happy that the joyful and warm company with Victoria kept her chatting us up even to the point I had to cut her off (believe it or not haha)
We cover a lot subjects ranging from baking, to moving cities, learning through hard lessons and mistakes, astrophysics, animal science, planetary musings, questioning the origin of the universe, favorite colors, and as always with Sofia, some jokes naturally. BORING!! HAHA.
Thank you Victoria for sharing your day with us and look forward to seeing her soon.
Take care and Be Healthy Yall
Episode 109, Ice Day
Ice Day, no school. Trees covered in frozen ice causing huge branches and whole trees to collapse under their weight. We were very lucky to only lose internet, maintaining power, heat, water, gas, and our trees collapsed in the yard not on our house. Whoa.
VERY fortunate.
Take care and be Healthy Yall.

Episode 108, 2023 is HERE
WHOA...another year gone. Another year of learning how to adjust to changes. Adaptation is a word that comes to mind, and for 2023, PREPARATION is main target.
I hope everyone had a great break, enjoyed your much deserved rest and relaxation. Time to return, and begin again.
This episode, and all from now on, have improved audio with some professional help, and I'm working to improve even further as I'm just beginning to learn the new tools. Mainly, you should enjoy less clicking, mouth smacks, more consistent sound etc. Thank you Kyle!

Episode 107, Lalo Martinez
An amazing and thoughtful conversation with Diego's previous 4th and 5th grade guide, Eduardo "Lalo" Martinez. I was honored to have him be a guide for Diego and also someone who is very encouraging of Sofia's baking which has given her much ownership of her own interests and skills.
Lalo is such an interesting and introspective person, and brings a seemingly bottomless well of knowledge and experience into any space he enters. I look forward to more conversations with him on different subject specifics in time. He has been involved in Montessori for almost 10 years and his passion for teaching only grows over time.
A father, Montessori guide, artist, actor, salsero, snowboarder, skateboarder, biker, hiker, reader, writer, healing arts trained and more.

Episode 106, Tomi Keah
The most humble and interesting data analyst, Tomi Keah, spent his valuable Sunday afternoon with Diego and I, and schooled us on many various topics he excels and works on. Many great lessons he shared with us, and many which can be applied right away. With a very unique and introspective way to analyze the world, he has a special skillset to bring many aspects of data in its various forms together like a story.
Thank you Tomi!

Episode 105, These are the Facts
Whoa...
Lots of info, saddle up. This is a follow up to Ep 79, and I go through the updates to the Ripple vs SEC court case that was started back in Dec 2020.
Its inception actually started back in 2016, and facts have been brought to light.
It is still ongoing, and I find it very interesting and it has taught me a massive amount about banking, digital assets, and what's happening in the world and how money and how we use it and move value is changing faster than we realize.
Some links spoken about are:
Episode 104, Mammoth Race
We returned from awesome weekend of racing with family at Mammoth Race in Glen Rose, Texas, its return since 2019 due to tiny virus slowdown. SMH.
So happy to have TWO weekends of family time back to back. I finally got myself in a kart like Diego has been racing in, and it is definitely harder than I thought, so more kudos to that kid.
Take care and Be Healthy Yall
Episode 103, CapCut and Crime
We're back and bouncing around some different subjects, as usual going through my random notes I collect through the weeks in between each episode. Today we talked about editing on phones and tablets, an unexpected rowing champion, and manufacturing in America.

Episode 102, Sofia Bakes
Welcome back! Year is cruising along. Today I sat with Sofia and talked about her latest passion, baking. Anyone at my office is well aware as I have had to offload, I mean share, the many treats she is creating. Dinners is what I'm pushing for, but who doesn't love cupcakes, cakes, buttercream, fondant, chocolate ganache, sprinkles and so on? Yeah, not the health food I envisioned but once her confidence hits level 19 Epic, other foods will be created. No fear of a kitchen is a strong skill and will be part of her life forever.
Take care and Be Healthy Yall
Episode 101, Racing and Heroes
Back again, and much to cover. We go over status of gokarting and the many details that encapsulate getting up to speed on them, as well as the evolution from an idea to where we are currently. The focus and attention needed to compete I think helps with giving a big confidence boost needed during the transitional years of middle school too.
We chop it up and improv some which keeps this talk light and funny too, why not riff when we feel it?
Take care and Be Healthy Yall
Episode 100, Sequoia Forest
We're BACK!
I missed it, but we have much to share and will be back on regular schedule, learning and sharing as we go through this life. I hope everyone is having a good summer, making the most of what time we have. So much room for activities!
Be well, and as always, Be Healthy.
Episode 99, World Central Kitchen
Well, we finally aren't Covid ninjas anymore. Whole house at least gets to endure it together, and glad we are getting through it ok. Soon as the same weights I lift every other day felt 3 times heavier, I knew something was up. I feel fortunate that didn't last long, but a reminder nonetheless how grateful I am to be in good health.
----------
While home as a family, just us as we quarantine, it's a very close reminder of our time when Covid first had us all together for so long. It's not as shocking this time, and familiar, and we are able to lean on some of the things that helped us during that time as we learned to share space and time.
----------
Strange how this pandemic keeps bringing us closer together.

Episode 98, Cant Hurt Me
Today I cover some of "Can't Hurt Me" by David Goggins, some with and without Diego. I'm often debating, even during conversation how to share things from books in a way that's helpful, not too boring, and understandable, and hopefully a lesson in there somewhere for both of us.
We have today, and can be better tomorrow if we choose. We can all benefit from seeing how careful we are at protecting our sensitive egos, it's hard to notice.

Episode 96, Turning 8
Whoa. 7.5 years have cruised by, Sofia my baby who slept on the patio couch in California for 6 months before moving back to the Lone Star State is days away from 8. Taking a second to just pause and be in the moment as much as possible. Minutes turn into hours, hours into days, days into weeks, weeks into months, months into years. Eyes open. This is why health is wealth, I'm still looking to have fun with my family.

Episode 95, Blood In Blood Out
What's up with O- blood you ask? Yeah you didn't but we're going to talk about it anyway. So many questions from kids makes me realize I know so very, very little. But, it gets me to learn more all the time.
I reflect a short bit on us all seeming to be in a new time, but not fully aware of how we've changed, or not giving it time to settle in as we notice it. It's how its been for me. And I'm grateful and hopeful for the future, and wish everyone well.

Episode 92, Brain Maker
Dr. David Perlmutter kills it again, next book on my list is Brain Wash. Today I cover Brain Maker, which can be purchased HERE.
A great read, I took longer to get through it than normal, and need to incorporate some of the fermented foods that he suggests, and also finally take a try at making yogurt in our pressure cooker.
It's another good reminder about the connection of food to our health and longevity, not just today.
Hope you enjoy, Be Healthy Yall
Episode 91, Honoring Boseman
Diego picked up the book Chadwick Boseman, Forever our King at Barnes and Nobles last week and read through it quickly. I'm glad he chose to learn more about his superhero favorites, and about the person behind the character. I didn't know myself how much of an impact his entire career made in such a short lifespan, not just Black Panther. This impact even is inspirational in the cooking show Sofia watches, which had a Marvel cake competition and the cooks making the Black Panther one sparked a very open dialogue about the challenges of being black in America and what that role meant for him.
---------------
We also just rant a bit and I'm amazed how much we all have to be grateful for, no matter how small or repetitive, or difficult. Life is Beautiful.

Episode 90, Ade Olufeko
We discussed Visual Collaborative, which is Ade’s diversely skilled company. They have a collection of interviews that span across all continents, professions, thoughts and beliefs. A very impressive collection of thoughtful works and interviews. Right before the global epidemic, VC wanted to go digital and experimented broadly, creating over ten collections of interviews. Diego also shares his love of astronomy, the Egyptian pyramids and the unique Nigerian heritage sites we look forward to seeing one day.
Ade discussed his vision for a collective that would bring people from different walks of life together to discuss their experiences within the collective human condition. They wanted to create a platform for unfiltered content without sponsors controlling the content that was being released. As a result, they accomplished ten volumes that were entered into the Library of Congress. The content is currently open access and free for everybody, but it may not remain that way since content can become saturated if it's too common. Ade was thinking ahead as he commonly does, and ensuring the content will still be unique in the future.

Episode 88, Dinos with Sofia
This Christmas season is very different from 2020. Today was an entire father daughter weekend, and we made sure to make the most of it. Legos, hot chocolate, shopping, San Marcos Xmas Festival, a podcast and some Fro-Yo yo.
-------
I don't always get things right, I like anyone else take life and time for granted (less as I age I'm noticing), or let emotions get the better of me which blocks my ability to be present. But today I feel like I got things right. Especially seeing the most gigantic smile on Sofia's face after winning a stuffed animal at the carnival, and then upgrading it for the bigger one and carrying them around, holding them tightly.

Episode 87, Brian DeFrees
And he's BACK! After 2 years of craziness and lots of wheel to wheel under his racing belt, Brian came to hang and share some time with us. Can't appreciate him enough for showing Diego what it's like to dedicate many hours, time, and resources to his passion of racing. He has centralized his focus now on Grid Life Touring Cup, and improved his standing dramatically since we last sat with him. As always such a calm and positive spirit, we're looking forward to seeing him again soon, on or off the track.

Episode 86, Austin Chapter 3
We came, we left, we came back, and now we're here but this time.....a new chapter shall begin. A true chapter turn in life. It's felt when it happens, and you know when it is what it is. Reminds me of one podcast where I was thinking about life in 5 year sections, and this one is right about that.
We hang and just chat. Things discussed are:
6th grade. Middle School phenomenon that is a chapter turn in life itself.
Now the fun, Diego went to BIG BOUNCE AMERICA and saw THE ETERNALS which I look forward to seeing. Thanks to a good friend with super cool parents, none other than Rob from podcast 11 way back in the early days of the BBP. He'll be on again sometime I'm sure.

Episode 82, Jet Setting
An amazing series of events led up to this episode. From worrying about how to pull it off, to crypto investments going up high enough to fund this epic adventure and not break our normal bank, to landing at an airport and our rental car not being given to us....which ended up becoming a very cool experience on Amtrak which was nice for all of us to experience. One main goal was going to be achieved no matter what, see my friend get married. That one thing, turned into a very special 2 weeks with my family.
This is also our 3 Year Anniversary of the podcast, THANK YOU EVERYONE for listening.

Episode 77, GP and the Superbee
A major step has been taken, Diego's first solo led podcast! Very proud of him. It's with his cousin and GP, a short one but still big accomplishment of leading it without me in the room. I foolishly expected it to go longer, but had to later acknowledge to him what he did and apologize for not first recognizing what he just achieved. A lesson for me for sure, one we can probably all relate to when we have certain expectations and allow those to block our view of the good things right in front of us.
I hope he can enjoy and see what I'm trying to do for him, and who knows what he'll think of this journey later. I plan to have more talks with GP later and get into the nitty gritty of the patience needed to restore a part of your past and present.
