S02E03 Leslie King

S02E03 Leslie King

When Angels Fight: Overcoming Sex Trafficking

Leslie King is a true unsung hero and a survivor of what she calls “modern-day slavery.” She uses her own personal story — which entails being coerced into prostitution at the age of 15 and subsequently enduring more than 20 years of human trafficking in Grand Rapids, Michigan — to shed light on the local street scene and to reach out and empower those affected by sex trafficking.

King is the founder of the nonprofit, Sacred Beginnings, a Women’s Transitional Program. She has rescued or served the needs of more than 400 prostituted women in the Grand Rapids area, providing them with the means to escape victimization and lead educated and productive lives.

Although her work often goes unseen and unrecognized, she has been changing lives through intense advocacy on behalf of sex victims and her caring, intentional work with the women and girls trapped into working the streets.

King is working toward a systematic recognition that the real lawbreakers are the pimps and johns who solicit the women and enforce the indentured lifestyle. She regularly informs law enforcement and policy makers about human trafficking in their own backyards. King sits on the committee for the Michigan Human Trafficking Task Force, is president of the Kent County Recovery Housing Coalition and chairs the board for Sacred Beginnings, in addition to running the all-volunteer organization.

Her debut book, When Angels Fight: My Story of Escaping Sex Trafficking and Leading a Revolt Against the Darkness, is out now and sold 2,500 copies even before it was released. You will not want to miss this episode!

047 The Standing Meditation: How one small change every day can save your life

047 The Standing Meditation: How one small change every day can save your life

Hour after hour, he contemplated suicide. How would he do it? Would it hurt?

After dropping out of college, Nate Rifkin had dedicated himself to self-help and pursuing his entrepreneurial dreams. Yet he failed to achieve any of his goals. Worse, he spiraled into debt, drank every morning, felt lonely, lost, and hated himself.

A few years later – after a brutal bankruptcy and a stint spinning signs on a street corner – Nate Rifkin had quadrupled his income, married the woman of his dreams, and found happiness and contentment.

What made the difference? Oddly enough, Rifkin had discovered an ancient form of meditation that reversed his downward spiral and elevated him to levels of success he never dreamed possible.

Candid and painful – but ultimately inspiring – The Standing Meditation will show you step-by-step how to perform this ancient meditation and introduce you to the mysterious spiritual tradition it comes from. You’ll discover how to stop self-sabotage, eliminate self-doubt, and tap into an unlimited source of energy.

This practice is not easy. It’s not pain-free. But it could transform your life.

044 Empowering Victims to Find Their Voice & Claim Their Freedom

044 Empowering Victims to Find Their Voice & Claim Their Freedom

The Fedd Agency announced today that it will publish Living in Silence – a courageous memoir about the healing journey of a woman who overcame sexual abuse with resilience and bravery in the face of evil and took back control of her life. Written by Cindy Arevalo, a faithful believer, Living inSilence is slated for publication on November 16, 2021. Arevalo was a 14-year-old eighth grader when she met her abuser, a teacher at her school. Throughout Living in Silence, Arevalo invites the reader to walk alongside her as she shares how the teacher groomed, manipulated, gaslit her, and subjected her to years of fear, abuse, and rape.

Arevalo wants victims of sexual assault to realize that what happened to them is not their fault. She wants them to feel her story, read about how she overcame pressure from her abuser to remain silent, and learn how she summoned the courage to speak the truth and continue to live her life with faith and hope. Arevalo's book is a powerful statement of her triumph over fear, and she hopes that her story will give other abuse victims the strength to come forward.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Cindy Arevalo is an entrepreneur and works in financial services alongside her husband Juan. Since coming forward to share her story, she has been an ally of and advocate for survivors in her community. Through her book Living in Silence, Arevalo hopes to create a larger network of support and hope for survivors of sexual assault across the globe. Cindy and Juan live in California with their children.

043 Sharon Bolan: A 911 Prayer that Led to a Calling

043 Sharon Bolan: A 911 Prayer that Led to a Calling

Sharon's story began in exotic British Guyana where she was born into a Christian home. Her parents, of Indian descent from India, moved the family to the United States when she was the age of 7. Her father Deoram, a Bible teacher and classical singer, was offered sponsorship by a non- denominational church based in Houston, Texas. Raised as a "preacher's kid", Sharon had a very sheltered upbringing. She knew very little about the world. "While it is great to be sheltered, there is a flip side. When you don't know anything about the world, you can go to the other extreme," she recalls.

Sharon began Fullness of Glory Ministries, a non-profit, 501(c) 3 organization. She presides as President with a full functioning Board of Directors.

As an Evangelist, she travels and preaches the saving and healing Gospel of Jesus Christ. Her call to preach and her walk with God are both unique. She considers herself an ordinary girl with an extraordinary calling and parallels her life to 1 Corinthians 1:26-29.

040 Choosing Love - Saving Lives

040 Choosing Love - Saving Lives

Priscilla Pruitt is the Global Ambassador and international spokesperson for Safe HavenBaby Boxes, a mission which works to rescue newborn babies from abandonment. She also advocates  as the spokesperson for Safe Haven Alliance. The Safe Haven Laws are in all 50 states, and along with others, Priscilla works to support state efforts to prevent the abandonments of newborns through Safe Haven relinquishments.

In 2008, she and her husband built three orphanages in Honduras, partnering with Impact Ministries International. Through her partnerships with Impact Ministries International and Safe Haven, Priscilla endeavors to expand education efforts into international borders, working towards planting baby boxes in all 55 Impact Ministries International orphanages in 15 different countries. The dream is to stop the current "gendercide" of 200 million deaths of baby girls in Asia.

In 2012, Priscilla and her husband relocated their family to a small town, where there is no mall, skating rink, bowling alley or any type of recreation center - a HUGE culture shock having come from Dallas, Texas. Their goal and mission was to help with the suicide rate in Wyoming (the-then suicide capital in the US). They decided to start by giving local kids an opportunity to have a safe, nurturing environment, and began a weekly youth group where they feed and entertain, personally covering one-hundred percent of the cost. That opened the door for them to mentor youth who have either attempted, or contemplated suicide. Ultimately, they became QPR and ASSIST trained in suicide prevention, and this mission led them to building a recreational center, a place where kids can feel safe, accepted, and have a sense of belonging.

Along with being a wife and mother, Priscilla is a homeschooler, entrepreneur, published author, speaker, international TV co-host of God’s View, and 2016’s Mrs. International.

038 Former NFL Player Sterling Harris is Helping People Hear God's Voice

038 Former NFL Player Sterling Harris is Helping People Hear God's Voice

This week's guest is former NFL player, Sterling Harris. Sterling Harris was born in Dallas, TX and grew up in Terrell. Sterling was a high school football standout with an array of awards including Super-Prep All-American, All-State, All-Area, and All-District, as well as a top four finalist for Class 4A player of the year in the State of Texas. He also excelled in the classroom as an honor roll student, and he graduated in the top 10% of his class from Terrell High School. Sterling was voted Best All Around Boy his senior year. During this time, he also owned and operated his own company specializing in acreage mowing and bulldozer work.

During his years at SMU, Sterling worked for a variety of companies that include Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, State Farm Insurance, Sewell Motor Companies, and ORIX Real Estate Capital Markets where he refined his business skills. Sterling holds a Business Management degree from the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University. While attending SMU, he was a four-year football letterman at the right tackle position. After graduation, he signed an NFL contract with the Cleveland Browns. Sterling suffered a broken foot during his rookie season. After battling back from the injury, the Browns sent him to NFL Europe where he played and started at the offensive tackle position for the Frankfurt Galaxy. Sterling was forced into early retirement by a reoccurring foot injury he suffered in NFL Europe after his second year in the NFL.

Sterling learned how to overcome adversity by seeking God’s Will for his life. As he sought The Lord, he realized that it is how you respond to challenges that dictate your success in life. Through surrendering to God’s Will and eventually God’s calling on his life into the Ministry, he has stayed God-motivated, and he has been able to live as an overcomer. Sterling has always had a giving spirit, and that spirit really bloomed as God began to teach him how to have a spiritual Love Relationship with Jesus Christ that is empowered by The Holy Spirit. This experience has transformed Sterling into the free and giving man of God that is living in a love relationship with Jesus Christ and being led by the Holy Spirit that he is today.

Through the WORD of God, Sterling’s mission in life is to inspire people to reach higher; by starting and developing an intimate Love Relationship with Jesus Christ that is real, personal and powerful led by The Holy Spirit. That powerful relationship will enable anyone who abides in the WORD and lives in close communication with Jesus Christ to overcome any of life’s circumstances and all adversity. His passion is helping fellow human beings experience God’s Love and Power. Visit him HERE to learn more!

037 This is Not A Good Idea: an interview with an LA comedian who loves Jesus & the Midwest

037 This is Not A Good Idea: an interview with an LA comedian who loves Jesus & the Midwest

Kerri Pomarolli is an American stand up comedian, actress and author based on Los Angeles. She has appeared in over 75 stage productions and had recurring roles on Port Charles, and The Young and The Restless and General Hospital. She has been in motion pictures such as "DeadLock," and her latest is on Netflix, "The Brennan Manning Story." She starred and co-produced I Love Kerri, which premiered on Sky Angel in June 2009. She has toured in stage productions from Off Broadway to Italy to playing the leading role of Vindice at the Young Vic Theater in London. She's also toured in many musical productions including" Leader of the Pack" in New York with leading role of Darlene Love.

She has published 4 books. In 2008, she published Guys Like Girls Named Jennie. (Because hello...she's from the Midwest and grew up in the '80's!)

After graduating from the University of Michigan, Pomarolli moved to Hollywood and pursued an acting career for several years. However, according to her, the roles she was being offered were challenging to her as a person of faith so she branched into stand up comedy. She attended Stella Adler Conservatory in New York and the British American Drama Academy in London.

She graduated from a two-year program at Second City. She studied at the Groundlings for Improv and joined the theater ensemble, The Actors Coop.[She has appeared in more than 75 stage productions, including off Broadway in New York City at the Lambs Theater. Pomarolli co-founded Act in Faith, a drama ministry.

She has appeared on The Tonight Show multiple times parodying Jenna Bush and Tonya Harding. She has been a correspondent to CNN's Showbiz Tonight on faith in Hollywood. In 2009, she hosted Laugh Break on Mom TV.

Pomarolli appeared on the Oxygen Network's reality show Tori and Dean: Inn Love, and starred in the comedy movie Engaged that also premiered on the Sky Angel network. Pomarolli was featured in the documentary Hollywood on Fire, where she talked about the condition of faith in the entertainment industry.[In 2013, Pomarolli hosted the California Women's Conference. She has a recurring role on Nick Mom Night Out.

So basically, as I say on this episode, she's "pretty much doing the same stuff as the rest of us."

Kerri and her thirteen year old daughter, Lucy, host a podcast entitled, This Is Not a Good Idea which you can hear on all the podcast platforms.

Kerri Pomarolli "crushes clean comedy," but mostly--she's just an awesome mom who is dealing with humanity and loving and trusting Jesus in the process. I LOVE THIS WOMAN! Don't miss this episode, you guys! Seriously:)

As always, thank you for joining us every week and reach out to me if I can help you show up on your journey and live without guilt, in spite of wrongdoing. Otherwise known as...REMORSELESSLY.

He had no idea how it would end up changing his life, and says, “Sensing God’s love for me has been so transformational that it almost feels as though I’ve experienced conversion all over again.” He became calmer, less anxious, less reactive, freed of past wounds, and a better listener in the presence of others.

034 Crossing the Finish Line

034 Crossing the Finish Line

This week's guest is Dr. Trudy Simmons, Executive Producer and co-host of the Christian View. Trudy is a Counselor, and Award Winning TV Host, a Speaker, Wife, Mom, and Ironman. Her show, The Christian View, is a fast-paced, high-energy half-hour TV show with a panel of sharp, well-educated, quick-witted women and men - discussing today’s hot topics and headlines from a Biblical perspective. If you haven’t checked it out, RUN don’t walk to watch it!

On this episode, you will hear Dr. Trudy share what kind of mental fortitude it takes to cross finish lines, not only like she does as an Ironman, but the finish lines of life. We discuss the analogy between physical endurance on earth and spiritual endurance. Trudy begins by talking to us about how church was the only safe place for her growing up in an abusive home, and how, at age 19, she no longer wanted to live. She found herself with eating disorders, cutting, and in a state of depression.

Tune in to hear Dr. Trudy encourage with words like, “Don’t give up – freedom is what’s on the other side of the finish line!” and teach us how to break out of the molds of (perceived) failure.

032 Overwhelming Love with Ashley Robbins

032 Overwhelming Love with Ashley Robbins

This week's guest is Ashley Robbins, founder of God Within Her Ministries, and my fellow Life Network for Women content creator and friend! Ashley has such a heart for God, but as you will hear her say on this episode, at one point in her life she told her mom, "if you talk about Jesus one more time, this will be the last time I talk to YOU!"

Just like so many of us, Ashley has felt alone, afraid, defeated, abandoned and certainly far from God. But today? Today she is an entirely different woman!

Tune in to hear us discuss God's overwhelming love and relentless pursuit of us, along with what Ashley considers the #1 thing we can do to show each other radical love.

031 Untangled, The Truth Will Set you Free with Michele Pillar

031 Untangled, The Truth Will Set you Free with Michele Pillar

Show Notes:

Michele Pillar – a famous recording artist, three-time Grammy nominee, and world-renowned figure for 40 years – shares her brutally honest and empowering story for us this week. Now an author and public speaker who encourages life change and better decision-making, Michele offers a riveting conversation in which she poignantly shares the life-changing miracles of faith that transformed her personal childhood trauma and subsequent wrong decisions into a source of healing and hope for many around the world.

Recently, Michele's latest book, Untangled, The Truth Will Set You Free, was featured on the Dr. Phil Show. She was as honest with Dr. Phil as she is with us on this episode! Be sure to listen all the way to the end where Michele has specific advice for women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s.

About Michele Pillar:

Author, speaker and three-time Grammy nominee, Michele Pillar has a story everyone should hear. Her journey of courage began as a child when she found herself routinely hiding under her twin bed to escape the violent behavior caused by her mother’s addictions and many subsequent life-altering experiences. Yet, due to much deep “heart” work, a remarkable trust, miraculous life experiences and her strong faith, looking back, Michele feels only gratitude. Michele's recognition from her early music career, her many #1 radio hits, chart-topping records and national tours built a strong foundation for her personally and professionally, but also uncovered the deep memories, painful past and trauma that she rivetingly unpacks in her book & song: Untangled/The Truth Will Set You Free.

029 This Beautiful Mess with Shelly Bartholomew

029 This Beautiful Mess with Shelly Bartholomew

Life is full of mishaps, reroutes, and disasters; they punctuate best-laid plans at every turn. But maybe the messiness of life is not something to shy away from but something to embrace. In THIS BEAUTIFUL MESS, Shelly Bartholomew lets you into her mess and teaches you how to embrace the unpretty parts of your story so you can transform your perspective and learn how to reject the expectations of perfection.

Bartholomew says about her forthcoming book: "I wrote This Beautiful Mess to help us as we learn to embrace the messes our lives bring and see them as beautiful. My hope is that this book offers a breath of fresh air to those that are heavy and exhausted from trying to keep it all together perfectly.”

About Shelly Bartholomew:

Shelly Moore Bartholomew, a small-town girl from Tennessee, won the 1997 Miss Teen USA title. In 1996, she won the Miss Northern Tennessee local title before competing for and winning the Miss Tennessee Teen USA 1997 contest. Bartholomew was the first delegate from Tennessee to win the Miss Teen USA or Miss USA titles.

Bartholomew was born in Jacksonville, Florida and later moved to Knoxville, Tennessee. She graduated from South-Doyle High School in Knoxville in 1997 and studied education at the University of Tennessee. In 1999, she married former University of Tennessee football player Will Bartholomew, and the couple have three children. In 2001, they founded D1 Sports Training, a state-of-the-art training facility, which currently operates at some six dozen locations across the country.

028 Five Characteristics of Good Leadership

028 Five Characteristics of Good Leadership

Join Beth today as she pulls from her 25 years of corporate leadership, explaining why only ONE way of leading truly matters: the way Jesus taught us.

Beth spent more than a quarter century in a male-dominated sales world, leading thousands of people within some of the largest Fortune 500 companies to identify and execute process improvement. During the course of that career path is when she finally recognized what she had been truly been doing all along was showing up alongside people and helping them persevere in their own personal process improvement journey.

Her strong business acumen, coupled with a deep desire to help others traverse difficult situations through a relationship with Jesus, is what led her to resign from a lucrative career and write her first book, Remorseless: Learning to Lose Labels, Expectations, and Assumptions—Without Losing Yourself.

Today, she serves in the role of Chief Advancement Officer for Mel Trotter Ministries, a large non-profit homeless shelter which exists to demonstrate the compassion of Christ for anyone experiencing hunger and homelessness. She holds two master’s degrees in Theology and is a certified holistic coach. Beth is a sought after speaker and leads 1:1 and group personal and professional leadership development programs in a variety of settings. Mostly, she just wants to help you understand how much value and dignity you have and how deeply and unconditionally you are loved—no matter what.

027 Paula Jauch on Overcoming Lifetime Trauma

027 Paula Jauch on Overcoming Lifetime Trauma

Paula Jauch is a trauma expert. She is also a speaker, award-winning author and podcaster, but what she cares most about in this world is helping others overcome trauma and abuse—just as she has. Paula grew up in Las Vegas with an alcoholic and abusive father and an addicted mother. She watched her dad hold her mom at gunpoint as he forced her to cook food for his girlfriends. To numb the constant pain, Paul disassociated from life and got mixed up in gang life, drugs and alcohol, and by the age of 15, found herself pregnant and deep into her life of trauma. Paula was also illiterate most of her childhood because she couldn’t concentrate in school—another consequence of disassociating due to trauma.

It wasn’t until a complete stranger introduced her to Jesus that Paula began to slowly begin to believe she was worth more. At her breaking point when she almost ended her life, Paula instead felt the presence of God—and her life has never been the same.

Today, Paula serves the hurting through the words she shares. Author of Cross Addicted: Breaking Free from Family Trauma and Addiction, Paul offers a hopeful path to recovery for those who are hurting and traumatized. To learn more, you can follow her on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter @ paulajauch and at www.paulajauch.com.

Her podcast, P.R.E.T.T.Y Podcast with Paula Jauch can be listened to wherever you find your podcasts, and her other projects include: Letting Go of Family Trauma and Addiction devotions on the YouVersion Bible App and “Exposing Family Secrets,” a chapter in the book She Writes for Him: Stories of Living Hope.

020 Answering the Prophetic Call to Orphan Advocacy

020 Answering the Prophetic Call to Orphan Advocacy

Did you know that you are a messenger? That the words you speak matter? What happens when we, as flawed humans, finally come into alignment and listen to the call – the one that tells us exactly who we were created to be?

Join in and hear how Harmony Klingenmeyer is not only answering the call, but teaches and encourages us to be radically inclusive, to check our background privileges and understandings, and to heal our cracked foundations so we can finally come into our own personhood . . . and live an upright life standing in the aligned Presence of God and those we are called to serve.

A powerful, prophetic and purposeful leader – Harmony is an on-fire revivalist who is contending for a generation. She is wife to Scott, mother of three adopted boys and seventeen children out of foster care in the state of Oregon. She holds her Master’s in Education, and has spent almost a decade teaching in elementary and middle schools. Harmony is passionate about seeing the Z and Alpha Generations healed and restored. Harmony is the Director of Children’s Ministry at Garden Valley Church in Roseburg, Oregon. She is a leader of leaders and coach to many. She is well known in her community as a passionate and sound preacher of Scripture and as an advocate for the orphan in both the church and the community.

Harmony is the author of a compelling book called, “Hear Their Voices: APortrait of an American Foster Family.” In it, Harmony describes the process of how she and her husband Scott became foster and adoptive parents and the call that every believer has to minister to the Orphan. She does so with humor, candor and compassion, while presenting the huge societal need for parents to arise on behalf of this generation. This book is a wake-up call and an inside look at foster care.

Harmony has spoken on more than 30 podcasts, vlogs and blogs. She ministers locally, regionally and on national platforms, building leaders and bringing healing. She was featured as a speaker on Patricia King’s “Women on the Rise” show, and is a regular article contributor at Christianparenting.org.

Thank you, as always, for joining Beth as she seeks to live a Remorselessly Biblical life and encourage others along the way. Please subscribe and rate the show so, you know, other people who also matter might be able to find it!

018 Spiritual Formation: An Invitation, Not a Race

018 Spiritual Formation: An Invitation, Not a Race

We were not created to be stagnant people! We are dynamic, moving, growing and changing individuals who are meant to be in a constant state of transformation! What does that all mean when it comes to spiritual formation?

When you learn to relinquish control and firmly believe and trust in a loving God who is constantly working behind the scenes to guide your steps…that is when the journey becomes magical and begins to align with your ultimate destination.

Spiritual Formation, like all of our personal growth and development, is a process. We become like Jesus gradually, not instantly. And once we know this—the pressure is off. No more performance based acceptance, no more being trapped in guilt and remorse, no more wondering if we are “good enough.”

Spiritual Formation requires patience and faith. The idea alone pushes up against our deeply ingrained instant gratification culture. We live in a world that has reversed the biblical order of being and doing. We are human beings, yet we often show up every day and measure our success by what we are doing.

Thus, we mistakenly begin to believe that if only we do the right things we will be the right kind of Christian…as if our doing would bring about our being. God alone has brought us into being.

In the words of C.S. Lewis: “Every time you make a choice you are turning the central part of you that chooses, into something a little different than what is was before.”

Tune in to hear why choosing to embrace your spiritual formation is an invitation to the greatest part of your journey!

EP0 INTRO to The Remorseless Series

EP0 INTRO to The Remorseless Series

At long last, an introduction to what you’ve all been waiting and asking for: the lowdown on all the hard life lessons I’ve learned from all the mistakes I’ve made. The stories. The “you can’t make this stuff up” behind the scenes from my actual life. The “seriously, he burped his cat and wore a Superman mask on not-Halloween?”*

This is where you can finally get the dirt. The direction. And the cheap entertainment. I’m here for you. Because honestly—I kid because I care. If I can help just ONE person avoid the pitfalls, mistakes, and hardships I’ve endured because NOBODY TOLD ME ABOUT THIS STUFF, then that is what I shall do. Every week, right here.

In closing, may I remind you of the show copy below taken from the very first Pilot episode of Remorseless. And may I also remind you: thou shall not judge, you planky-eyed MF’rs. Wherein “MF” = “My Friends,” of course. I mean come on . . . Who do you think I am?

*some teeny story details might be changed to protect the innocent. (As in, me.) (The one who loves parentheses.)

Welcome to the Remorseless Podcast PILOT (which means, hold on tight), a place filled with straight-up tools, sarcasm, and inspirational stories designed to help you get through normal, messed up, everyday life. Oh, and depending on my mood, all while learning how to read the Bible and not feel like a no-good terrible sinner loser afterward.

I care about BEING WHO YOU WERE CREATED TO BE and not getting stuck and/or succumbing to some other person’s (i.e. the last person you dated…or married) moronic “advice.” I care about making better life decisions. I care about where people came from (unless it’s boring). I care about SHOWING UP along our journeys and taking action. I care about being a good parent, partner, friend, employee, and HUMAN. And so should you.

Join me and my bevvy of entertaining guests as we laugh, learn, and share stories about all things under the heading of, “Seriously? You can’t make this stuff up.”

(Kinda like I say to my producer @Matthew Grzybowski every time…some or most of that might need BLEEP’d…)

015 Women: The Prophetic Key to the Future of the Church

015 Women: The Prophetic Key to the Future of the Church

Today's guest is the amazing Soorin Backer of Soorin Backer Ministries. She is the author of Women in Jesus' Life and founder of The Pearls of Hope Conference held yearly on the West Coast (hybrid/virtual option available). Soorin says, “In a day and age when women are still being told to ‘go home,’ we are inundated with messages that can be confusing about how God truly views us. However, the Gospels are clear. In a culture that established women as property, Jesus actively worked to disrupt the cultural norms of his day.”

On this episode, we discuss why women hold the prophetic keys of the future of ministry and why it has always been this way in Scripture, even though many individuals and institutions still struggle with believing it. Soorin asks hard and often controversial questions like, "Why is it okay for women to be the President of an entire country, but they cannot hold the mic to preach in front of 100 people?" and "Why do we insist on making God a formula?"

From raising our children and the next generation with God's unconditional love to spending intimate time with God, you will hear why showing up unapologetically as the person God made you to be matters. Tune in to hear this bold and eye-opening interview!

014 Do It Anyway – Why Going Deeper Matters

014 Do It Anyway – Why Going Deeper Matters

What if Peter and the other disciples didn’t “feel like” going back out after an entire night of fishing with no results? No fish? No success? What if they would have decided to take the easy route, not listen to Jesus, and stay stuck? Well for one, people would have gone hungry.

Peter and the others were exhausted after trying their hardest but having nothing to show for it. They just wanted to call it, to give up and go home. They were DONE.

But Jesus had other ideas. He told Peter, “Put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch.” (Luke 5:4). And when he did—when he chose to go deeper and listen to Jesus—there were more fish in the nets than Peter’s boat could even hold.

What would your life look like if you chose to go deeper into your efforts and relationships . . . even when you don’t feel like it?

Tune in to this week’s show to hear Beth’s inspiration and encouragement to GO DEEPER.

013 How Unhealthy Leadership Can Lead to Spiritual Abuse

013 How Unhealthy Leadership Can Lead to Spiritual Abuse

How does going outside your comfort zone, your people group, your own church, and your zip code reshape your relationship with God?

Erika Mariglia grew up in the church, so the topic of God was never unfamiliar to her. However, she is a woman who always challenged the status quo, wanting to know more, see more, and do more. Erika spent her 20’s on the mission field in Honduras, and says that is where so much of her changed view of God, religion, and even spiritual abuse came about. Additionally, she is a woman who understands the value and importance of diversity, having been changed through her proximity to different people groups - whether gang members, the homeless population, women who have been prostituted, or those in jail.

When asked who she is, Erika says, “I am ministry-driven, and with that I have grown to see the good, the bad, and the ugly within ministry life. This has driven me to love the topic of healthy leadership and ministry and what that looks like fleshed out.”

Join us for an incredibly raw look at how being exposed to things in life that you were not prepared for can lead you to a much more intimate and authentic relationship with God.

012 An Utmost Life - Why You Should Never Settle for Less

012 An Utmost Life - Why You Should Never Settle for Less

God made us to be with us, and yet so many of us feel unworthy to be in His presence. Oftentimes this comes from feeling like we don’t belong anywhere here, on earth, and are left out among people. Whether the “in” crowd leaves us out, or we struggle to fit in anywhere no matter what we do, feeling left out can leave us stuck and uncertain of where to go or what to do next. Who are our real friends? Are we settling for the wrong reasons?

We can get through difficult seasons of life when we get a break in between. But it gets harder when the disappointments are unrelenting. Many people give up and think, “It’s not worth it – I can’t do it again.” And it is precisely then when they settle for an ‘almost’ life.

The good news is, there is a second half of Proverbs 13:12 that reminds us of this: a sudden good break can turn your life around.

We are not ‘almost’ people. We are believers who have the Holy Spirit living and breathing and active inside us. This means, we are UTMOST people designed for an ‘utmost’ life! That is the kind of people God created us to be. We are made in His image (Genesis 1:27). Therefore, if God is an Almighty Being filled with power and love and might…that means we are too.

What kind of decisions are you making to get unstuck and move forward, even though you might be living right now with unrelenting disappointment?

Tune in to today’s episode of Remorselessly Biblical to hear more about how to not stay stuck in an almost life.

011 BIGGER LOVE: How the Secrets We Hide Hurt Us

011 BIGGER LOVE: How the Secrets We Hide Hurt Us

Have you ever kept a secret so big that it held you back from loving someone else completely? Did you think that you could hide from God in the process, too? Tune in as Beth and her guest, Cindy DeBoer, talk very openly about how committing the “big sin” of pre-marital sex rendered them stuck and kept them from making future God-honoring decisions—including understanding how to love well and feel worthy of forgiveness. “The more obedient we are, the bigger He gets,” Cindy says. “Understanding we don’t have to carry the guilt and shame anymore allowed us to move forward in our marriage. We changed our priorities and ultimately, our entire life.”

Cindy shares how she and her husband went from an emphasis on materialistic things and worldly wealth to giving it all up in pursuit of God. When her husband received the next big paycheck, instead of purchasing another home or building a barn to add to their large property—they adopted their daughter from Guatemala. This decision came from constant questioning and praying together: “God, what do You want us to do with all this?”

She goes on to discuss how being “leaders” in their church made her feel, how she felt like a complete hypocrite and imposter as she walked down the center aisle, pretending to be pure and teaching young girls they had to be, too—yet she had not been. Not even her husband knew that secret. “Our family went through a necessary deconstruction.” Which, by the way, I remind you is the best thing we can do to really draw nearer to God. Otherwise we just keep running and repeating the SAME mistakes. It’s exhausting.

Learn from others who have gone before you and remember that those who know better, do better. Don’t condemn yourself (or allow others to) for making decisions before you really knew better—including who you were created to be.

Cindy DeBoer is a blogger, psychiatric nurse, and recovering “unmissionary.” With her popular and timely blog, Far, Far Better Things, Cindy reveals the gritty yet life-giving journey her family discovered as they began to live truer to their faith. Her blog centers on how she and her family gave up on the American Dream, left lucrative careers, lived in nearly 100 percent Muslim Morocco, and now follow Christ in the inner city of Grand Rapids. Her most popular blog post garnered over 145,000 hits from over 150 countries.

She and her husband, Paul, are passionate about demystifying Islam, working with sustainable development programs in Central America, and living simply—so that others can simply live. They have two daughters at home and two married sons.

006 Gwendolyn

006 Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn Bork died when she was 18 and then awoke in ICU where she stayed for over a month recovering. What she has never recovered from, though, is what God told her then--and continues to teach her now. From leaving home at 15 and enduring physical abuse and trauma, to being raised by a single dad who was a Captain in the Army turned law enforcement official who died in active duty 5 years ago--Gwen has been through some pretty unimaginable things, yet continues to persevere and live remorselessly.

Join us on this episode to learn more about how finally giving up control leads you to an incredible life you never saw coming.

Gwendolyn Bork is a recording artist, author, speaker, and Founder and CEO of Queen City Collaborative. She had a story, and went after her legacy. After rising like a phoenix from poverty and harsh hidden agendas from the world, she made the choice for independence at age 15--leaving home and never turning back. She has over 20 years in Business Development, Consulting, Wealth Management and Community Development. A single mom to two teenage boys, Gwen is mostly just cool and cares about giving back to her community in New York...and the world. You can find here here:

005 Job

005 Job

What happens when suffering comes our way and we no longer have the internal fortitude to be “rule-followers?” What happens when we have been taught that Scripture is nothing more than a rulebook rather than a mysterious tool to be invited into? Join me on today’s episode as we discuss helicopter parenting as it relates to God and why I believe the Bible is meant to be ambiguous rather than provide “clear” answers. (Ha! Please. According to whom?)
