Betsy Goes to the Movies... and sometimes her friends go too

Betsy Goes to the Movies... and sometimes her friends go too

By Betsy & Friends

A #moviepodcast: For years my friends and I watched and shared our couch commentary on good, classic, funny, campy, cheesy, low budget, so-bad-they're-good, bad, and/or older movies that may not have withstood the test of time. I figured why not share with the world?

Each episode has spoilers, and I swear profusely, especially during the really bad movies.

Betsy Watches Let the Wrong One In

Betsy Watches Let the Wrong One In

I needed a great movie, and this did not disappoint. Within ten minutes I knew it was going to make my top five vampire movies list. It has the perfect blend of campy/gory/jumpy moments, the special effects are great, and the acting is spot on. So listen as I get mad at Matt, get really excited about Anthony Head, and just overall enjoy myself.

Betsy Watches The Peanut Butter Solution

Betsy Watches The Peanut Butter Solution

This movie was hard for a number of reasons. First of all, what the hell did I watch?! Second of all, it was recommended by a dear friend who passed away a year ago. I had actually recorded this episode right before he died, and I didn't listen to it until I edited it for this post. So that was difficult. I also did not get the Neverending Story vibe I was promised. There were a lot of "what the hell is going on" moments though.

Betsy Watches Terror at Blood Fart Lake

Betsy Watches Terror at Blood Fart Lake

This movie puts the bad in "so bad it's good". It's deliciously low budget, campy, ridiculous, and I loved it. Listen as I point out plot holes, terrible wigs, and just overall enjoy myself.

Betsy Watches Jason X

Betsy Watches Jason X

To give you an idea of how bad this movie is, I watched it in the middle of October in 2023. That's how much I dreaded listening to the recording. It is on par with The Room or Bloodrayne for being a terrible movie, and I think the 19% on Rotten Tomatoes is actually very generous.

I will never watch this again, and if you want to be spared, just listen to this episode. Trust me.

Betsy Watches Tucker & Dale vs Evil

Betsy Watches Tucker & Dale vs Evil

Hey, once a month is better than nothing, right? I cannot express how much I love this movie. If you haven't seen it, then you definitely need to fix that. It's the perfect blend of humor, gore, ick, and lovable and hatable characters. Listen while I get heavily invested and yell at the screen-- a lot.

Betsy Watches Mortal Kombat

Betsy Watches Mortal Kombat

Welcome back! Again. I had a rough time mentally the last few months, and I did not handle it well, so here we are, back logged once more. I did decide to stop pressuring myself though. It would be nice to stick to a schedule, but if I can't, then I can't.

I enjoyed this version of Mortal Kombat. To be honest, I also really enjoyed the one that came out in the 90's. The first one. The second one should be buried, which means, of course, it's going to be an episode as soon as I can trick someone into watching it with me.

Betsy Watches Sharks of the Corn

Betsy Watches Sharks of the Corn

This epitomizes "so bad it's good". You have to watch this if you love over the top ridiculousness that doesn't even try to come off as realistic. Listen as I harp on the complete lack of continuity and just really enjoy myself.

Betsy Watches Zaat

Betsy Watches Zaat

Yes, I know, I forgot to schedule the episode. Sorry! I'm trying this new thing called a "calendar" and to help me get better. Listen as I enjoy this B movie set in Florida and get into the campiness, craziness, and yell at the screen.

Betsy Watches Bride of the Killer Piñata

Betsy Watches Bride of the Killer Piñata

Everyone who had to listen to me go on and on about how much I loved Killer Piñata knows that I was beyond excited when writer and director Stephen Tramontana let Erin and me screen Bride of the Killer Piñata for the podcast.

This is so good! The campiness, gore, humor, and dark twist are perfectly balanced, and the acting, makeup, music, and special effects are so good-- especially for a low budget film. You need to see this when it comes out.

Betsy Watches Independence Day 2: Resurgence

Betsy Watches Independence Day 2: Resurgence

This mash up of Top Gun and the first Independence Day is brought to you by a disgruntled podcaster who had to rent the movie twice because it ran out before I finished watching the first time.

Listen as I groan and complain about this 2 hour long movie that could have been a much more enjoyable hour and a half tops, try to figure out plot holes, and just generally do not enjoy myself.

Betsy Watches Tremors 5: Bloodlines

Betsy Watches Tremors 5: Bloodlines

Hello! Welcome back to my podcast in which I promise not to take a hiatus like that again without a very good reason! Not that I didn't have one. I just didn't mean for it to last so long.

Listen as I cringe through terrible dialogue, try to make sense of scenes that don't make sense, and continue to appreciate Burt Gummer.

Betsy Watches Super Mario Brothers

Betsy Watches Super Mario Brothers

Well. I had to do it sometime. The things I do for my listeners... I made Alicia watch this with me since we were both stuck at home with covid, and now I feel vindicated for sitting through the Twilight movies for her. Listen as we try to figure out the really bad editing and over exposure in the only bootleg copy we were able to find (baffled that no one wants to stream this cinematic gem) and she gets really mad and starts calling everyone by the wrong names.

Betsy Watches Kazaam

Betsy Watches Kazaam

This should wrap up the NBA players Hollywood extravaganza, unless I missed someone. That's possible. I started trying to block movies out of my awareness right around this time. The late 90's were not kind to viewers.

Listen as I get annoyed. A lot. But I still kind of have fun with it. And notice that I actually scheduled this episode like I'm supposed to!

Betsy Watches Space Jam

Betsy Watches Space Jam

Every realize you forgot to do something? That was me forgetting to schedule this episode. Then I did all of the social media posts and still didn't make it live.

Anyway, I know it's a short one, but you can still listen to me actually enjoy the movie this time. If you're only going to watch one Space Jam movie, make it this one.

Jun 21, 202211:26
Betsy Watches Space Jam: A New Legacy

Betsy Watches Space Jam: A New Legacy

Well. This was a movie. I honestly thought it would be light-hearted and goofy like the first one, not a two hour long commercial for every Warner Brothers franchise. Listen as I painfully break my hiatus, and don't worry, in two weeks I'll be back with the original!

Jun 02, 202219:57
Betsy Watches Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation

Betsy Watches Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation

I know, this is two weeks late. One day I'll be able to get back on schedule. One day...

I actually wound up liking this movie more than I thought I would. I wouldn't rush out to own it or watch it again any time soon, but it wasn't a really bad movie. The acting was decent, and the special effects were good. The plot was predictable, and there were definite holes, but I mean, it was a direct to TV movie. It wasn't written to be the movie of the year.

Listen along with me and enjoy!

Betsy Watches Get Out

Betsy Watches Get Out

If you listen because you like hearing me take apart bad movies, then this episode is not for you. If you like listening to me lose my mind, get wildly invested, and start yelling at the screen, then you're in for a treat! This is probably my favorite solo episode.

This movie is so good, and I think everyone should see it at least once. It's a perfect blend of horror, thrill, comedic timing without being funny, intelligence, and the reality of unintentional racism without being political.

Betsy Watches Hard Rain

Betsy Watches Hard Rain

This was recommended by my friend Izze when we were in the middle of an insane amount of rain last year, I think. It's just a great, mindless, predictable heist/natural disaster movie with quippy banter and great pyrotechnics. The recording is not the best in the world because I was in isolation and had to record from my bedroom, which has a lot of random background noise, but I hope you enjoy it!

Betsy Watches Cupid

Betsy Watches Cupid

If you find yourself jilted and heartbroken this Valentine's Day, please reconsider before unleashing a hate filled, revenge fueled demonic god on the world, or your friends might have to watch a movie like this one. It wasn't the worst movie I've done here. It also wasn't the best. Enjoy!

Betsy Watches Ape vs Monster

Betsy Watches Ape vs Monster

It's been a January. I feel like it's lasted 31 years, but somehow I never seem to be able to find time to do anything. I blame the cats. And covid. And the weather. And things breaking down and falling apart.

Anyway! To make up for it, I felt that it was my civic duty to choose a really great bad movie, so I give you this lovely gem that I stumbled across on Showtime. As mock busters go (I actually had not heard that term before now, but it makes so much sense), this one is definitely worth it. It's full of gaping plot holes, continuity errors, a serious need for fact checking, a mix of good old fashioned misogyny and feminism, and some pretty impressive CGI. The background thumping noises are brought to you by Mr. Peepers and his new toy.

Feb 04, 202255:30
Betsy Watches Masters of the Universe

Betsy Watches Masters of the Universe

You know what would be nice? No covid. I didn't get it, but it's wreaking havoc in enough areas of our lives that the last few weeks were a little ridiculous. So between that and a broken heater, I got off schedule. But that's okay! There will not be an episode Thursday, but hopefully I'll be able to get some recordings done and get back to it soon.

I love how terrible this movie is, and I'm sure everyone will get tired of listening to me yell at the screen. A lot. Enjoy my frustration over the plot holes and how terrible Skeletor's costume turned out!

Betsy Watches Krampus Unleashed

Betsy Watches Krampus Unleashed

his definitely did not disappoint. It took less than five minutes for me to get sucked in and start yelling at the screen. Victor, who hasn't had to watch a movie with me in years, was very entertained. I don't know if it was meant to be a comedy, and if it's not, then I'm sorry, but we laughed our asses off for quite a bit of it. I would also like to apologize to everyone involved in its creation for getting so mad that Troy and David weren't killed off early. The way they met their demises was worth the wait.

Betsy Watches Gremlins

Betsy Watches Gremlins

Welcome to the episode in which Alicia perfects her gremlin voice and Erin gets really frustrated at Billy's lack of action! I also apparently decided to start a cross over and kept calling Gizmo a Mogli from The Jungle Book, and I kept calling Stripe Spike. But I mean, that could have worked. If there was ever a forerunner for campaigns against animal experimentation, this movie is it. Not gonna lie, I wasn't too sad about the science teacher. I did have a question after I started editing though. If they couldn't eat after midnight, what was the time at which they could start to eat? Was it after the sun came up? Noon? The mom was also the real MVP of the movie. She was a complete bad ass.

Betsy Watches Tremors 4: The Legend Begins

Betsy Watches Tremors 4: The Legend Begins

Four more Tremors movies to go! I figured I started out of order, so why change it now? This one lives up to the other two I watched (being the first and last), complete with humor, moments that made me jump, and glaring inconsistencies (namely, how the hell did a tea kettle and pick axe summon the worms but horse hooves never did?). I'm looking forward to watching the rest of them.

Dec 16, 202147:07
Betsy Watches the Lighthouse

Betsy Watches the Lighthouse

I had to trick my friend Victor into watching this with me. I understand that the book is really good, and I want to read it. I think the movie would have made a lot more sense if I had. The movie though... William Dafoe's and Robert Pattinson's considerable talents were wasted. I had no idea what kind of movie I was supposed to be watching or what was supposed to be going on other than they basically died from complications due to cabin fever, and drinking lamp oil is a bad idea. Was this supposed to be a horror movie? Thriller? Drama? Maybe if it hadn't been so visually dark, I would have been able to tell. Listen as we basically spend half an hour asking each other what just happened and being really confused.

Dec 09, 202132:32
Betsy Watches Killer Piñata

Betsy Watches Killer Piñata

Finally! A movie I actually enjoyed! It's been a minute. Erin watched this one with me. We laughed. We had our hearts touched by the piñata's plight. We were grossed out. Many thanks to my dear, dear friend Brandy for this one!

Also, if there was ever a story that teaches the dangers of bullying and revenge, this one is it. We very early on started rooting for the piñata. The weapons montage was also just epic. I loved it. Listen as we also go for Lindsey and otherwise are just pretty happy when everyone else dies. Other than the store keeper. I liked her.

Dec 02, 202135:20
Betsy Watches Main Street

Betsy Watches Main Street

This movie is bad. I don't mean bad like Bloodrayne or The Room. Those at least have the makings of being cult classics. Main Street is just plain bad. It was actually recommended by my friend Luka who then watched it with Alicia, and they told me it would probably make me angry. I decided to watch it anyway because... I don't know why exactly.

So listen as I try to figure out what the actual hell is going on, lose my mind over the terrible accents, and am completely miserable.

Nov 11, 202135:52
Betsy Watches Hawk & Rev Vampire Slayers

Betsy Watches Hawk & Rev Vampire Slayers

Finally! A movie I actually for real liked! This one is great. It has all the perfect elements of a so-bad-it's-good movie. The dialogue is quippy without being stilted, the characters are over the top without being ridiculous, the special effects areridiculous-- but in a good way. I'm annoyed that the first recording didn't take so I could release it on Halloween, but it turns out the recording for the episode that was supposed to come out today didn't take either, so here we are.

Listen as Hawk and Rev defeat vampires through the powers of epic montages, garden tools, and friendship (aww).

Nov 04, 202135:36
Betsy Watches Priest

Betsy Watches Priest

Welcome to another bad movie in which we keep going off on tangents about different movies and this is definitely the noisiest episode I've ever tried to edit. Between the crickets, bag of chips, and the heavy rain on the tin roof, I'm surprised we were even audible.

I dragged new friends into this episode (one slept through most of it, and the rest of us were a little jealous). We try to follow the storyline while marveling at the spectacularly bad CGI all for your listening entertainment. Enjoy this next installment in the vampire Halloween series!

Betsy Watches Once Bitten and Bloodrayne

Betsy Watches Once Bitten and Bloodrayne

I have very sadistic friends. This is a two part episode just so I could get these over with. Once Bitten is really annoying but it does have a few cute parts. Bloodrayne though... That movie is just terrible. Like on level with The Room

I have a lot of episode notes up, but basically now is your chance to listen as I suffer for my art. I hope you enjoy this more than I did!

Oct 29, 202101:11:56
Betsy Watches What We Do in the Shadows

Betsy Watches What We Do in the Shadows

This is such a fun movie to watch. It's simple, funny, and it's actually good.

I was pleasantly surprised at the finished result for the recording. It felt like we were way too invested in the movie and not providing enough interaction, but we pulled it off. By "we", I mean Alicia and me. It's one of her favorite movies. I had to drag her into this with me. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed watching!

Oct 28, 202127:40
Betsy Watches Blacula

Betsy Watches Blacula

Yay, a movie I enjoyed! Just to clarify, I did not record in the order in which I posted, so this came after Bloodrayne and Priest. Then I binge watched this, Fright Night, and A Girl Walks Alone because I had to do something.

I liked this movie a lot, so thank you Brenda, for sparing me from suffering. It's the right amount of so-bad-it's-good and camp and cheese and "what the hell just happened" and "oh shit look out!". But I have to ask, what was with the make up and costuming? The humans were beautifully dressed and made up, and the monsters looked like the director gave a kindergarten class a bunch of face paint, curtains, and some noodles and told them to have fun.

More notes are on the website, so listen and enjoy!

Oct 27, 202146:57
Betsy Watches Nick Knight

Betsy Watches Nick Knight

Wow, did this movie make me sick. Literally. Clearly whoever was in charge of cinematography has never had motion sickness. Other than that, it wasn't as bad as other movies I had to watch for this week. It was more like a pilot than a movie, which I suppose is what it was meant for since it led to the Forever Knight TV series, which I remember watching.

I definitely felt that I was missing a lot of the story line, like there was a different movie before this one we should have seen first. The plot holes made it confusing, especially when we didn't get explanations for things (like Nick in the tanning bed) until way after they happened or we were given information that wound up being irrelevant. Still enjoyed it though!

Oct 26, 202141:46
Betsy Watches Fright Night

Betsy Watches Fright Night

I forgot how much I like this movie! It's sad when that happens. This one was requested by my friend Kelly, and it was a nice one to watch while I unwrapped Halloween decorations.

It's so funny how as we get older different things bother us. When I saw this the first time, I was already in my 20's, and Jerry trying to make out with Amy never even phased me. 20 something years later, I was so grossed out by it. Also I forgot how pissed off Peter Vincent made me with all his running away bullshit! And could Charley be any more of a hysterical idiot by constantly calling the police and trying to make people believe his story without any kind of proof?

If you haven't watched this in a while, do yourself a favor and watch for Halloween. Meanwhile, listen as I watch it for you!

Betsy Watches Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Betsy Watches Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Well. This was... something. The animation was really neat! We did not like this movie, which is probably why we talked about every other movie we could think of and Amir and Erin worked on perfecting their Matthew McConaughey impressions. I don't even know how we got started on him. He's not in the movie at all.

Anyway, listen and enjoy as we rant about the changing plot and storylines and how much we really just don't like Polly.

Oct 21, 202142:09
Betsy Watches Johnny Mnemonic

Betsy Watches Johnny Mnemonic

I'm pretty sure no one sits around and says, "Remember all those great sci-fi/futuristic movies from the '90's?" Well, there's a good reason. Henry Rollins and Ice T are the only saving graces (sorry, Keanu and Dina). I realized that one of the problems I have with 90's futuristic stuff is that the movies have little vision. The main concepts weren't outside the realm of possibility for the time, and the technology and devices were actively being used then. Like fax machines, phone hackers, the taxi, the clothing styles, VCRs.

Erin, Amir, and Alicia join me on this one, so listen as we try to get through it in one piece.

Oct 14, 202137:54
Betsy Watches Aquarium of the Dead

Betsy Watches Aquarium of the Dead

Welcome to the Aquarium of the Dead, a movie that leaves more questions than it answers: Questions like why do I keep trying to apply logic to movies like this? Why were EMTs the ones to respond to a fire alarm and not the fire department? When they said people were running around screaming, where were the people who were supposedly running around screaming? How did the EMTs open and operate an elevator when everything was on lockdown with no power? Why aren't any of the people who were attacked, especially the ones who are dead, turning? I have a lot more questions. They're in the episode notes. Listen as I try to navigate plot holes, bad CGI, and whatever is going on with the cameras.

Oct 07, 202137:08
Betsy Watches Beowulf (2007)

Betsy Watches Beowulf (2007)

Well. This was... something. I remember that I wouldn't see it because it was CGI, and the few trailors and pieces of content I saw were disturbing. I was not wrong. Admittedly it was cutting edge for 2007. But as you can hear, it wasn't really my thing, especially because no one would put clothes on Hrothgar at the beginning. I also hadn't read the story in years, and while I remembered that I enjoyed it and the gist of it, I forgot all the fun details like how Hrothgar was Grendel's dad, for instance. Or what a colossal dick Unferth is.

Enjoy!

Betsy Watches Tremors

Betsy Watches Tremors

Remember on like my third or fourth episode when I did the very last Tremors movie in the series and said I needed to do the first one? Well, here we are!

Fun fact: we are all 3 degrees from Kevin Bacon. Alicia's grandfather was roommates with James Earl Jones who starred in The Magic 7.

It's so funny how all of these episodes are different, and there still, almost a year into this, isn't a working formula. I've scrapped several recording with just myself that worked better with other people involved, and I've gotten rid of recordings with other people that work better when it's just me. And there are episodes that I wish I had been able to record with other people but didn't get the chance. This episode definitely would not have been as good solo. I laughed so much during editing. My two favorite parts are Alicia and the horsepower and Erin and chipmunk guns.

Listen and enjoy!

Betsy Watches The Warriors

Betsy Watches The Warriors

Look at me, posting two weeks in a row! This lovely gem was recommended by my friend Victor. It's one of his favorites. It was interesting. I did not have a good first impression, the middle was frustrating, and by the end, somehow I loved the whole thing.

Also there's some weird static thing going on throughout the recording. I can't figure out what caused it. I think I need to just give in and buy an actual mic for my phone. I can do the mic on ear buds when I watch alone, but that really doesn't help when I'm watching with other people.

Betsy Watches Sharknados 5 and 6

Betsy Watches Sharknados 5 and 6

Welcome back! Things I have learned in this podcasting journey include the need for a hiatus during the summer. Trying to work in masks with heat indexes in the triple digits completely wiped me out. So thank you for not giving up on me, and we are back to it with the end of the Sharknado marathon! Also in the intro I say that the episode is released on Wednesdays, but it's still Thursdays.

I really got a kick out of these, although all of the Aprils started to give me a headache at the end. I needed a chart. I also love how I take everything in the stride until the smart car in Rome, and that's when I start to argue that the movie is not accurately portraying something.

Also, you know I am woefully out of touch with the entertainment industry today when I recognized Samantha Fox but had no clue who Clay Aiken was until I looked him up when I read the credits. There are also a lot of jumping around and dangling pronouns, both in the movies and in my commentary. For instance, Geraldo played Dr. Angel, not Dr. Angel's female assistant.

Betsy Watches Sharknado 3 & 4

You know that feeing you get when it's 10:00 at night and you keep thinking you forgot to do something? I uploaded the audio for this eight hours ago and then completely forgot to actually finish creating the episode.

Here are the next two in my new favorite B-movie series! The fourth is especially my favorite, in case you don't pick up on that after the 12th or so time I mention it. Enjoy!

Update on Upcoming Episodes

Update on Upcoming Episodes

This is just a quick update on what’s going on why the episode releases became sporadic. I love doing this podcast, but when I started it, I was only working 45 hours a week, and we were still under covid restrictions. Also the heat and humidity are terrible where I live, but the West, especially the Pacific Northwest, really has it a lot worse than we do.

Betsy Watches Sharknados 1 & 2

Betsy Watches Sharknados 1 & 2

I felt the need to watch all six Sharknado movies because of shark week. I unashamedly admit that I enjoyed them a lot, even when I had to edit the recordings during a hurricane. Listen as I try to pretend that everything happening is completely normal and get way too excited at Al Roker's coverage of the storm in the second one.

Betsy Watches Avalanche Sharks

Betsy Watches Avalanche Sharks

Happy almost Shark Week! I love shark week, and not just because it's an excuse to watch really bad shark movies. This definitely falls in the cheesy, so bad it's good categories. I enjoyed it a lot. Listen as I try to keep track of everything going on and all of the loose ends and really want to punch Dale. Just as a heads up, they never show the bikini ski run, so if you watch this for hot girls in bikinis skiing down a mountain, you, my friend, will be sorely disappointed.

Betsy Watches Independence Day (1996)

Betsy Watches Independence Day (1996)

Well, the episode is on time at least. I'm really unhappy with the sound quality, but after the fourth re-record, I realized I was losing commentary I had really liked, so I sacrificed sound quality to try to salvage content quality. I don't do these with a script. I just start watching and candidly talking, so the more I have to redo an episode, the more stilted and structured it becomes. I'm trying to find a better way to record that will give me better sound quality and reduce the ever growing background noise my phone picks up from inside and outside my house.

I watched this a gazillion times when it came out because I worked at a movie theater that showed it. And also I just love sci fi movies with lots of explosions and cool special effects. It's a bit campier than I remember, but I still enjoyed watching it. Here's hoping you enjoy listening to it too!

Betsy Watches Howard the Duck

Betsy Watches Howard the Duck

And we're back! Between a heavy workload, sick cat, sick me, and internet outage, things just got a little hectic and backed up. Anyway! This episode was inspired by the Howard the Duck episode from the What Will We Watch podcast, which is one of my favorite movie podcasts. Check it out!

But before you do, listen while I am very entertained and yet very confused -- a lot-- and once again try to apply logic where none can be found.

Betsy Watches Space Sweepers

Betsy Watches Space Sweepers

Or as I like to call it, something to make me feel better after last week's movie.

I enjoyed this movie so much. You get sucked into the characters and their lives and histories, you want to fight for them, the cinematography is well done, it has humor in all the right places without making anyone look clownish or ridiculous, the pacing was great so that you got everyone's back stories and plenty of action sequences and plot points without anything getting dragged out or skipped over, and I seriously hated Sullivan. I really, really hated him. It's been a while since a movie made me hate the villain that much.

Sorry you don't get to listen to me suffer for my art, but don't worry, I'm sure I have something lined up soon.

Betsy Watches What Lies Below

Betsy Watches What Lies Below

I don't even know where to start with this. It's another baffling Netflix movie in that you have such a bad movie with such a good cast. I feel that there was too much of an attempt to try to make the movie more serious than it needed to be instead of letting it fulfill its fun alien-horror-b-movie campfest potential.

If you want this movie to make sense, find one of the many articles that explain the ending and premise because that was the only way I knew what was going on. I'm kind of bummed because this was so close to being so bad that it's good. Also, it turns out she's smiling at the end. I thought she was screaming. The more you know...
