S4 Ep 13 - March with midwives
Maternity care is in crisis. Midwives are leaving the profession in droves. Staffing issues, trouble with retention and newly qualified midwives leaving before they finish training, along with COVID and illness has meant families are not getting the care they not only deserve but need. Midwives themselves are burnt out and suffering, with one third coping with PTSD and 96% of student midwives reporting mental health problems. The March with midwives movement looks to raise awareness of the issues and the impact this has on midwives themselves, and the families they support. I speak to Elle Fleming, a doula and new mum, and Millie, a midwife who has been forced out of a profession she loves in order to protect her own well being. If you’d like to join the vigils on Sunday 21st November visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/marchwithmidwivesuk/ for details of your local march.

S4 Ep 08 - Angharad's positive birth story
In this episode I hear all about Angharad's home birth. Although she planned to have her baby at home, she hadn't anticipated the birth to progress so quickly, and she ended up free birthing with no medical assistance other than the 999 call handler. We discuss how the preparation she'd put in beforehand gave her the knowledge and power to trust her body, stay calm, and ignore the well intentioned but potentially unhelpful advice of the 999 call handler, meaning she helped herself and her baby in the final stages of labour. The Better Birth podcast is hosted by hypnobirthing and antenatal teacher Erin Fung. You can find out more about Erin at www.better-birth.co.uk as well as on instagram and Facebook @betterbirthuk.

Leanne talks about how positive and memorable her births were, and how important hypnobirthing was in achieving this. However her third stage of labour with both births did not go as planned, and whilst the experience post birth was difficult, she still feels positive about the experience and chats to me about why. While the post birth did not go to plan, her stories are powerful examples of why birth prep and having tools to stay calm and in control is so important. What is physiological birth, and why does it matter so much? In this episode, I chat to independent midwife, hypnobirthing teacher, birth worker and activist Kemi Johnson, about physiological birth, what it is, and why it's becoming so rare. With ever increasing rates of medicalisation of birth, from induction to c-section birth, a physiological or natural birth is becoming rarer and rarer, and the impact this has long term physically and mentally on both parents and their babies is potentially massive. We discuss why it's so important parents are informed and empowered, and why Kemi and I are so passionate about facilitating the birth process through education. If you'd like to follow Kemi and find out about her many groups and chats she hosts, go to https://www.instagram.com/kemibirthjoyjohnson/ The Better Birth podcast is hosted by hypnobirthing and antenatal teacher Erin Fung.
