S9 Ep 7 - The UK Birth Trauma Enquiry

S9 Ep 7 - The UK Birth Trauma Enquiry

Catch up on my Instagram live with @hazelkeedle and @drfeeleyrm talking about the U.K. birth trauma enquiry.

On 9 January 2024, the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on birth trauma in the UK Parliament will set up an inquiry to investigate the reasons for traumatic birth and to develop policy recommendations to reduce the rate of birth trauma. Research shows that about 4-5% of women develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after giving birth – equivalent to approximately 25,000-30,000 women every year in the UK. Studies have also found that a much larger number of women – as many as one in three – find some aspects of their birth experience traumatic. Birth Trauma affects 30,000 women across the country every year. 53% of women who experienced birth trauma are less likely to have children in the future and 84% of women who experienced tears during birth, did not receive enough information about birth injuries ahead of time.

The cross-party inquiry is led by Theo Clarke MP and Rosie Duffield MP and aims to find out more about the experiences of women who have been affected by traumatic birth. The inquiry is currently gathering written and oral evidence to inform the policy report which will include practical policy recommendations for the UK Government and will be published in Spring 2024.  Seven sessions to hear evidence will run on consecutive Mondays in Parliament between 5 February and 18 March 2024.

The inquiry is inviting written submissions both from parents and from professionals who work in maternity. It is open to everyone in the UK, and we particularly welcome submissions from people from marginalised communities such as those who are racially minoritised, LGBT, economically disadvantaged, homeless, asylum seeking or displaced, care experienced, neurodivergent or facing any other circumstances which means their voice is less likely to be heard.

The inquiry will report in April 2024.

S9 Ep 4 - Breathing, birth and biomechanics with Shellie Poulter

Breathing is something we all do naturally and instinctively, but does how we breathe matter during pregnancy and particularly during birth? I chat to doula and biomechanics expert Shellie Poulter about how breathing techniques we teach in hypnobirthing actually affect not only how we're feeling, but the biomechanics effects on muscle, tissue, pelvic floor and labour itself. We chat coached pushing and why it's harmful, the different breathing techniques and how they differ, and what exactly is happening to you and your body during pregnancy and birth.

S9 Ep 3 - High risk pregnancy with midwife Daisy Kelly

S9 Ep 3 - High risk pregnancy with midwife Daisy Kelly

It's virtually impossible not to be labelled as high risk these days, but what does it ACTUALLY mean? I chat to midwife Daisy Kelly about the high risk label, why context and personalised care is so important, and what you can do if you're given the label of high risk. We talk rights, advocacy, delving in to statistics and making sense of chance and risk, and talk in more depth about specific situations such as PPH, big babies and other common "high risk" labels.

S8 Ep 11 - Compassion fatigue in midwifery with dr Jenna Brough

S8 Ep 11 - Compassion fatigue in midwifery with dr Jenna Brough

Compassion fatigue is something which many healthcare professionals experience, particularly in caring professions such as midwifery. Running on a tank empty of compassion can lead to a lack of empathy towards those you care for, which can mean less than ideal care for pregnant people at best, causing trauma to them at worst. It also has impact on midwives' own mental health. I chat ti psychologist dr Jenna Brough about what compassion fatigue is, and how it affects both midwives and pregnant people and women. We discuss how to identify it, prevent it, and where to get support if you believe you are experiencing it.

I hope this episode helps midwives, student midwives and anyone in a caring profession to seek support and show compassion to both those they care for, but also for themselves.

S8 Ep 9 - A guided relaxation from Erin - Better Birth

S8 Ep 9 - A guided relaxation from Erin - Better Birth

I thought I would treat you all to a guided relaxation. This short relaxation helps you visualise a wonderful, peaceful forest. The track is best listened to whilst sitting or lying down somewhere quiet. Enjoy!

When you're pregnant, worries and fears can creep up and affect how you're feeling about giving birth. Hypnobirthing can be a fantastic way to help with this. Hypnobirthing is a birth preparation technique using guided hypnosis to prepare for a positive birth. Classes are a combination of antenatal education covering the physiology of birth, how your mind affects your body and the progression of labour, the promotion of birthing hormones, balanced information on your choices, advice on the best ways to optimise your chances of a natural birth (including environmental effects, gentle nudges to help induce labour and birthing positions), the importance of researching and planning (and how to write a birth plan), combined with the repetitive reinforcement of positive affirmations and imagery of birth to overwrite a lifetime of negative associations with labour, relaxation techniques, breathing and fear release exercises. The aim is to plan for your best birth, not your perfect birth, and to ensure you feel positive about the experience no matter how birth happens! My classes cover a ton of vital information to ensure that no matter what path your birth takes, you avoid the feeling of being disempowered and associated birth trauma, and instead feel a sense of achievement and positivity! Find out more about my classes at www.better-birth.co.uk

S8 Ep 7 - pregnancy and eating disorders with Charlotte Mindel

Pregnancy can be a challenging time for any pregnant person, but for someone who suffers with an eating disorder it can be a particularly difficult and potentially triggering experience. I chat to birth worker Charlotte Mindel about how various eating disorders such as bulimia, anorexia and compulsive overeating can affect a pregnant person, the considerations midwives and doctors should be making, and where to find support. Charlotte is a mother, birth coach, and motherhood coach. She supports women in accessing peace, connection, self-love, self-trust, and the opportunity to choose the birth and motherhood experience they want for themselves. S8 Ep 6 - Nuchal cords and cord prolapse with independent midwife Debs Neiger

S8 Ep 6 - Nuchal cords and cord prolapse with independent midwife Debs Neiger

We have all heard "thank god I was in the hospital because the cord was wrapped around the baby's neck!" but how dangerous is a nuchal cord, and why does it happen? And what causes cord prolapse and what can be done when it occurs? Cords wrapped around babies necks and cords slipping out first... they sound like total emergency disaster situations! But whilst one is an obstetric emergency, the other isn't. We talk nuchal cords and cord prolapse with independent midwife Debs Neiger. This essential episode will re-educate and dispel myths, and an important listen for anyone who is pregnant.

S8 Ep 5 - The aging placenta myth with Sophie Messager

Does your placenta magically pack up after 40 weeks? It sounds unlikely, and yet it's a justification given to thousands of pregnant people who are recommended induction. I chat to researcher and doula Sophie Messager about this possible myth, and why maturation of the placenta may have helpful and physiological reasons. We discuss induction, research bias, and how the patriarchy has all affected births and our bodies and babies.

Sophie is a long time respected doula, rebozo expert, author and teaches rebozo and wrapping techniques. You can find Sophie's article on the aging placenta myth at https://sophiemessager.com/the-myth-of-the-aging-placenta/ and on Instagram at

S8 Ep 4 - Prodromal labour with doula Helena Hamilton

S8 Ep 4 - Prodromal labour with doula Helena Hamilton

Have you heard of prodromal labour or what to do if you experience it? Our expectations of length and progress of labour is largely dictated by what we've seen on TV... which means we expect our waters to break, contractions to start, a mad dash to hospital and a baby arrives. So what do we do when we experience intense contractions with no cervical change, which may last days? Because that is what prodromal labour is! And it can be exhausting, and worrying, particularly if you're dismissed or told it's "just Braxton hicks". Helena covers what prodromal labour is, why it may occur, and what to have in your birth toolkit to help cope with it.

S8 Ep 3 - Lilian's healing home birth

I chat to previous hypnobirthing client Lillian about her wonderful healing home birth! Lilian joined my group hypnobirthing course in January 2023 to prepare for the birth of her son after a negative experience first time around birthing her daughter. She recounts how despite doing a hypnobirthing course the first time round, she felt she didn't "do the work", and why she decided to prepare more thoroughly this time around. S8 Ep 2 - instrumental birth with obstetrician Florence Wilcock

S8 Ep 2 - instrumental birth with obstetrician Florence Wilcock

Instrumental birth is a situation that terrifies most pregnant people, but why are they often used, and are there alternatives? I chat to consultant obstetrician Florence Wilcock about forceps, ventouse, caesarean birth, and why sometimes instrumental birth may be offered during labour.

Florence is a consultant obstetrician working in NHS maternity services for 30 years. She has a specific interest in perinatal mental health and improving women's experience of maternity care. In 2020 she started her podcast TheObsPod to try and demystify obstetrics and help both maternity staff and families going through maternity care understand a bit more about the role of the obstetrician. The podcast covers a wide range of subjects from common clinical topics to stories about my working life. In August 2022 she also gave a TEDxNHS talk ‘Birth Should be Special’. S8 Ep 1 - neurodivergence and birth with Victoria White

S8 Ep 1 - neurodivergence and birth with Victoria White

How does neurodivergence affect pregnancy and birth? I speak to doula Victoria White, who founded Neurodivergent Birth in February 2023. Victoria aims to increase understanding and awareness of neurodivergent perinatal experiences. Victoria’s daughter was diagnosed as autistic in 2022, and Victoria has also recently been exploring her own neurodivergence. Following her daughter’s diagnosis, she read everything she could get her hands on about neurodiversity, and she began to see how many aspects of pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period could be challenging and experienced differently by neurodivergent people. She launched an Instagram page and a podcast to facilitate the conversation. The response that this was a much-needed space within the birth world was overwhelmingly positive, and she began to have many wonderful and informative conversations with neurodivergent people, healthcare professionals and researchers via the podcast. This then led to the development of a competency workshop for birthworkers; ‘Supporting Neurodivergent Birth’, which she co-facilitates with fellow doula and autistic advocate Sam Sheppard.

S7 Ep 16 - The importance of the microbiome and birth with Toni Harman

S7 Ep 16 - The importance of the microbiome and birth with Toni Harman

This is the final episode for the season and it's a GOOD ONE!! In this episode I chat to Toni Harman about the importance of the microbiome. When Toni was pregnant, she wanted a homebirth, and Toni wanted to exclusively breastfeed. Toni ended up with an emergency C-section and struggled to breastfeed. After the birth, she wondered could birth and infant feeding affect a child's long-term health? The answer is yes! We discuss what the microbiome is, why birth preferences are so crucial, and why asking for skin to skin, and carefully considering antibiotics is so important. We talk the importance of poo and mess in birth, the wonder of breast milk microbes, vaginal seeding, and the crucial things to consider if you're having a c-section.Toni has made the film MICROBIRTH, written a book and has created evidence-based courses on this important subject.

You can find Toni's courses, film, and books at https://microbirth.com/

S7 Ep 15 - Bonnie's maternal assisted caesarean

S7 Ep 15 - Bonnie's maternal assisted caesarean

Having to have a medically necessary caesarean when you were planning a physiological unmedicated home birth can be a difficult change to accept, so I am hugely grateful to Bonnie for coming on to the podcast to share her story of her pregnancy and birth. Bonnie's baby needed to be born by caesarean early, and she talks about how she navigated the discussions with doctors, and why having a maternal assisted caesarean was so important to her and her experience of birthing her first baby.

If you'd like to hear more about maternal assisted caesareans, what they are, and how to help get your medical team on board with one, listen to my interview with Dr Natalie Elphinstone who facilitates this kind of birth regularly: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/betterbirth/episodes/S6-Ep-7---maternal-assisted-caesareans-with-Dr-Elphinstone-e1o61u6

S7 Ep 13 - Individualised care plans with midwife Kelly Sawyer

S7 Ep 13 - Individualised care plans with midwife Kelly Sawyer

I chat to midwife and lecturer Kelly Sawyer about individualised care plans. We discuss what these are, why you may want to have one, and how to go about asking for support with putting one in place. Did you know that every pregnant person should be getting an individualised care plan for pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period? We cover the circumstances that may mean you're more likely to want this kind of plan, such as "risk" factors and complications, and birthing outside of guidelines, and what to do if your request is not respected or facilitated. You can find the NHS guidelines around individualised care planning here: https://www.england.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/B0423-personalised-care-and-support-planning-guidance-for-lms.pdf

S7 Ep 11 - Birth choices of midwives with Sharon Stoliar

S7 Ep 11 - Birth choices of midwives with Sharon Stoliar

How does the experiences of midwives influence their decisions on where to give birth and what that care looks like? I chat to midwife, author and researcher Sharon Stoliar about her amazing research in to midwives and their birth preferences. In her research, she found some eye opening statistics surrounding home birth and continuity of carer which midwives are experiencing, such as 75% of midwives got continuity of carer, and a huge 11% had home births compared to the national average of 0.4%! We discuss WHY midwives are choosing to birth outside of hospital, and why knowing your carer is ultimately the driving force behind where midwives choose to birth. We talk about her PhD and the multiple research papers coming out of the huge wealth of data she has gathered, as well as bias, privilege, autonomy and advocacy, and also chat about Sharon's own experiences of birth trauma as a mother and midwife.

If you'd like to follow Sharon on instagram you can find her at https://www.instagram.com/sharonstoliar/

S7 Ep 10 - The truth about VBACs with midwife & researcher Hazel Keedle

Have you had a previous caesarean? And do you want to have a vaginal birth this time? VBACs are often a struggle to achieve, not because of the risks involved but because of the hurdles you may come across getting your midwife or consultant to "agree" to supporting one. I chat to Hazel Keedle, who is a midwife, researcher, senior lecturer at Western Sydney university, and author of Birth After Caesarean: Your Journey to a Better Birth, and The journey of homebirth after caesarean (HBAC) - Fighting the system or birthing in peace

We discuss why Hazel started researching VBAC experiences, why respectful and continuity of care is so important, what the actual risks of uterine scar rupture are, and the impact a successful VBAC can have on a person.

S7 Ep 7 - The Mamma Coach - Sophie Burch

S7 Ep 7 - The Mamma Coach - Sophie Burch

In this episode I chat to the Mamma Coach Sophie Burch about her journey navigating 3 births, birth trauma and depression, all of which led her to create her courses and books. We discuss the importance of setting time aside for your own mental wellbeing, and how modelling good coping methods and communication also affects our children's abilities to regulate their own emotions.

Sophie is a Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist with Mindfulness and Coaching specialising in Perinatal & Parental Mental Health with additional training in PTSD & Trauma.  She has worked as a Trainer in PMH Awareness alongside Perinatal Mental Health experts and campaigners Dr Jane Hanley and Mark Williams, she has founded Beyond Birth Mental Wellbeing Practitioner Training and she supports Make Birth Better and Pandas Perinatal Mental Health Charity.

After 17 years working in the birth and baby world - having experienced mental health issues herself as a mother to four children (including twins) and witnessing her partner struggle as well as hundreds of her clients - Sophie decided that she had to take action where it was not being taken by the NHS and supporting services.

She believes we’re missing a trick if we are not putting some preventative work into preparing for a baby on a mental level.  To this end she has written a book and parent support sessions: ‘Beyond Birth: Mindful Early Parenting’ to bring emotional wellbeing and mental health awareness to all people starting from conception, for life.  Sophie has also created and recorded content for the Nourish App (which helps mums with their mental and physical wellbeing) and regularly Vlogs and interviews perinatal mental health and parenting experts on her Instagram accounts.

S7 Ep 5 - Birth, Obstetrics and intuition with Dr Nathan Riley OBGYN

What role does intuition have to play in the practice of obstetrics and midwifery? I chat to holistic OBGYN Nathan Riley about why he changed his approach to obstetrics, and why we have lost our way in maternity care. We discuss the intuition needed by any birth worker, whether that's a midwife, a doula, an obstetrician or the birthing person, and why our obstetric led approach is resulting in a climb in the numbers of women and birthing people feeling dissatisfied at best, traumatised at worst, by their experiences giving birth.

In this episode I listen to the wonderful Fran, who shares the birth story of her third baby. After two births on midwifery led units, Fran decided to birth at home for her third. She recounts how her birth started, and points out some key examples of the importance of surrendering to birth, listening to your body, and using all the instincts you have available to you to help your body birth your baby. I am so excited to share this story with you all. Congratulations Fran and thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful and positive story with people who really need to hear such beautiful examples of how birth can play out!

S7 Ep 3 - Supporting physiological birth in midwifery with Dr Claire Feeley

S7 Ep 3 - Supporting physiological birth in midwifery with Dr Claire Feeley

In this episode I chat to midwife and researcher Dr Claire Feeley about her new book  "Supporting Physiological Birth Choices in Midwifery Practice". We discuss the research that the book focuses on, and the challenges that midwives face in supporting autonomy and birthing out of guidelines. Claire talks about her initial research in to freebirth, and how led on to further research looking at supporting physiology. She identifies how organisational culture and policy, as well as our own individual biases and fears, have all played a part in creating an environment where supporting choice is seen as dangerous from both a birthing perspective as well as a professional one. We discuss how NHS trusts and individuals can instigate change in order to improve the experiences and outcomes for birthing women and people and their babies. This is a vital listening for anyone who works in maternity care, whether you're a midwife, student, or senior leader.

S7 Ep 14 - Meconium with midwife Kelly Sawyer

S7 Ep 14 - Meconium with midwife Kelly Sawyer

In this episode I welcome back midwife Kelly Sawyer to discuss meconium. Meconium is baby's first poo, and quite often its presence can lead to a change in your birth plans, moving you to a more medicalised birth. As something that is rarely discussed antenatally, this can blindside parents meaning they're uninformed and unprepared for the implications. We cover what meconium is, what may cause it, what the risks are, why its presence may mean your midwife or doctor recommend medical intervention, and what the evidence is to support those recommendations. midwifethinking.com/2015/01/14/the-curse-of-meconium-stained-liquor/

S6 Ep 12 - The midwifery crisis with doulas Samantha Gadsden and Maddie McMahon

In this episode I chat to doulas Samantha Gadsden and Maddie McMahon about the escalating midwifery crisis. Sam, who runs hugely popular home birth and freebirth Facebook groups, has unique insight in to the challenges birthing families face due to the number of people who pass through her groups, and Maddie is instrumental in creating the March with Midwives campaign, now in it's second year. We discuss why midwifery is in crisis, the impact this is having on both midwives, they way they practice, and their mental health, as well as the very real and negative impact this is having on birthing people and their long term outcomes for mothers and babies. The March with Midwives demonstrations are nationwide on 20th November 2pm. Check out https://linktr.ee/MarchWithMidwivesUK to find your local rally, share and raise awareness on social media and let's get the government to take note. S6 Ep 11 - Sharon's induction & caesarean birth story

S6 Ep 11 - Sharon's induction & caesarean birth story

Birth is unpredictable, and sometimes even though we plan for a physiological birth, medical intervention may be necessary. In this episode my client Sharon tells her birth story. Although it involves induction and an unplanned caesarean, she explains why it still feels such a positive and empowering experience. A huge thank you to Sharon for bravely retelling her story and sharing why birth prep, having tools to help with decision making, and knowing what to ask for when, is so vital.

I hope it empowers many more pregnant people to have trust in their bodies and their instincts.

S6 Ep 8 - hyperemesis gravidarum with Megan from Birth-Ed

S6 Ep 8 - hyperemesis gravidarum with Megan from Birth-Ed

In this episode I chat to Megan Rossiter from Birth-Ed about her experience of hyperemesis gravidarum. Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a condition at the extreme end of the pregnancy sickness spectrum, and affects approximately 2% of people. Different from pregnancy sickness, HG can be incredibly debilitating for sufferers, and can affect the health of both the pregnant person and the baby. so it is important that you seek medical attention if you are unable to keep any food or fluids down as you can become dehydrated. Megan talks about the difficulties with getting support from her GP and the hospital when she first suffered with HG in her first pregnancy, and how it was better managed in her second. We discuss tips for advocacy, symptoms, and the impact this debilitating condition can have on sufferers.

If you're suffering from HG, you can find support from the charity https://www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/

You can find Megan on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/birth_ed/ where she shares her story of experiencing HG.
