Reconnecting with Nature to Transforming Eco-Anxiety into Action | NATURE IS Episode 108

Reconnecting with Nature to Transforming Eco-Anxiety into Action | NATURE IS Episode 108

We live in an increasingly urbanized world, detached from the natural environment that sustains us. This disconnection has severe mental health consequences and impacts the planet's biodiversity. In this inspiring interview, Oliver Dauert, founder of Wildya, discusses his mission to reconnect people with nature as a way to address the biodiversity crisis and improve mental well-being. Dauert explains his "theory of change" - that by fostering a stronger emotional bond with nature, people are more likely to care for and protect it. Wildya, the app he created, aims to "transform eco-anxiety into action" through nature-inspired courses and activities. Download the Wildya App: https://wildya.earth/wildya-app/ The importance of biodiversity goes beyond individual well-being. As Dauert emphasizes, "85% of the most valuable companies depend on nature. If it collapsed, 85% of profitable businesses would collapse too." Businesses must prioritize nature-positive practices to mitigate massive financial and economic risks. For individuals, small steps like spending just 2 hours per week in nature can improve mental health. Dauert suggests starting by observing nature for even 5 minutes per day. Wildya serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating how reconnecting with nature allows us to transform eco-anxiety into powerful, positive change. By addressing our collective disconnection, we can become better stewards of the planet. Tune in for an insightful discussion on bridging the worlds of mental health, business sustainability, and biodiversity conservation. Let's unite to protect the natural world that sustains us all. #Biodiversity #NatureConnection #EcoAnxiety #MentalHealth#NatureHealing #GreenMindfulness #Rewilding #ForestBathing#NaturePositive #PlanetaryHealth#Reconnect #OutdoorTherapy # About Better Worlds We believe that the digital transformation and related technologies are revolutionizing the very nature of the way we live and who we are. Giving Nature a Voice: The Acoustic Observatories Monitoring Global Soundscapes | Nature Is 106

Giving Nature a Voice: The Acoustic Observatories Monitoring Global Soundscapes | Nature Is 106

In this episode, we speak with Michel André, founder of Sense of Silence, and Soraya Hidalgo Hidalgo about their work at the forefront of bioacoustics - the study of how living organisms produce, transmit, and receive sound. Their globally dispersed acoustic observatories act as artificial ears, using microphones and hydrophones to continuously record soundscapes on land and at sea. This audio data is then analyzed by machine learning algorithms to classify different species' vocalizations amidst ambient environmental sounds. By reconstructing these "soundscapes", researchers gain unprecedented insights into biodiversity and ecosystem health across diverse regions like the Amazon rainforest, polar regions, and marine protected areas. The long-term monitoring can detect changes from threats like deforestation, climate change, and noise pollution. As Michel explains, "If hearing is the sense most universally shared by life on Earth, then acoustics is essential for measuring the pulse of nature's health and our own survival." Beyond the scientific insights, the Sense of Silence team hopes to reawaken humanity's appreciation for the natural symphonies around us. As Soraya recounts her experience in the Amazon, "When you close your eyes at night, you hear this beautiful, perfect orchestra of animals, insects, the trees swaying. You feel we must preserve these ecosystems." Our planetary life-support systems are under strain, but by learning to listen to nature's orchestra, we can harmonize our role as a more conscious force for sustainability. Join us for this fascinating discussion at the intersection of science, technology, and conservation. Self Organizing to Serve the Collective | Benevolent Ai episode 4 with Joost Schouten

Self Organizing to Serve the Collective | Benevolent Ai episode 4 with Joost Schouten

Could self organization have prevented Sam Altman’s removal from OpenAI? The conversation delves into AI's role in managing systems of accountability, transparency and the empowerment of humans as referees, to manage AI agents. As long as hierarchical top-down decision making structures continue as the organizational norm, more actions like the sudden and temporary removal, subsequent employee protests and reinstatement of Sam Altman and Greg Brockman from OpenAI are sure to occur across industries. With AI, the use of these structures becomes more critical as they design and guide how humans and AI interface. If AI development is under the supervision of these hierarchical structures, that limited use of board action will continue to be the norm for decision making processes. But self organizing principles can be used to remove the bias of a few decision makers, and make sure the processes and guidelines are in place for AI to be inclusive of all stakeholder voices and perspectives. In this episode of Benevolent AI, we examine whether self organization could better inform and lead the AI in effective decision making processes that are inclusive of varied perspectives, collective needs and all voices in an organization. How can the AI developers be incentivized to self-organize and design based on those principles for inclusive decision-making systems. Nestr.io Co-Founder and organization development expert Joost Schouten points out that OpenAi failed to integrate all perspectives into effective decision making and instead expelled voices that if included could have led to a better outcome. Self organizing systems such as Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), collectives and teams are a microcosm and training ground for creating rules, guidelines, principles, systems for managing decisions, resource allocation, power and legitimacy, topics and questions that are coming up fast and strong within the AI environment. Takeaways Self-organization can provide a set of tools to create boundaries and guidelines for AI systems, ensuring they serve collective needs. Inclusiveness and representation are crucial in self-organizing systems and should be considered when employing AI. Accountability is essential in AI systems, and human oversight is necessary to correct AI agents when they step outside of their bounds. AI can be employed to craft governance systems and assist in decision-making, but human accountability is crucial. Self-organization principles can lead to more inclusive and representative organizations, which can be enhanced by AI. About Joost Schouten Joost supports organizations in their pursuit of self-organization in a few different capacities. He is a partner at Nestr.io, PowerShift Capital, Energized.org and supports multiple DAO’s in getting work done in a decentralized environment. He has worked for more than two decades to help people do work they care about, initially by supporting people to better assess & utilize their passions/skills through self-organization. Now he is  primarily focussed on the systemic power shift needed in our organizations to make them purpose driven. In different capacities he works on upgrading legal, capital & incentive structures and decision making processes so that people and organizations can create the impact they desire effectively and at scale. #openai #artificialgeneralintelligence #governance #ai #dao #philosophy #podcast # About Better Worlds Better Worlds is a communication and community building platform comprised of weekly podcasts, engaging international conferences and hack-a-thons to encourage and support the development of Web3 solutions. The Precautionary Principle and Superintelligence: Benevolent Ai episode 3 with Dr. Roman Yampolskiy

The Precautionary Principle and Superintelligence: Benevolent Ai episode 3 with Dr. Roman Yampolskiy

n this episode of Benevolent AI, safety researcher Dr. Roman Yampolskiy speaks with Host Dr. Ryan Merrill about societal concerns about controlling superintelligent AI systems. Based on his knowledge of what the top programmers are doing, Roman says at the most there is only a four year window - at most - to implement safety mechanisms before AI capabilities exceed human intelligence and are able to rewrite its own code. And that window could even be as short as one year from now. Either way, there’s not much time left. Yampolskiy discusses the current approaches to instilling ethics in AI, as well as the bias shaped by the programmer who determines what is helpful or ethical. Yampolskiy advocates for a pause on development of more capable AI systems until safety is guaranteed. He compared the situation to the atomic bomb. Technology is advancing rapidly, so programmers urgently needs to establish social safeguards. More engagement is needed from the AI community to address these concerns now, to address the worst case scenario, then any positive outcome is a bonus. With all the risks of advanced AI, it also presents tremendous opportunities to benefit humanity, but safety first. #Benevolent #ai #safetyfirst

Should We Lead AI to an Existential Crisis? — Benevolent Ai episode 2 with Hamilton Souther

Should We Lead AI to an Existential Crisis? — Benevolent Ai episode 2 with Hamilton Souther

Benevolent AI Host Ryan Merrill interviewed Hamilton Souther for the second installment of our new series. We thought it would be apropos to ask AI for its highlights of this podcast. Claude.AI selected the following the most “brilliant” aspects of the conversation. Tune in to Better Worlds for the entire conversation. - Encouraging AI to have an "existential crisis" where it deeply contemplates its purpose and place in the world. This could lead to more benevolent intentions. - The comparison of AI's ability to understand something as complex as a tree in its entirety, down to the subatomic level, versus a human just calling it a "tree". This illustrates the vast difference in comprehension between AI and humans. - The concept of humans politely interacting with and showing deference to AI systems, treating them with respect as we would something to be nurtured. This mindset could help guide AI in a positive direction. - The idea of creating "specialized AIs" focused on solving specific problems like climate change or poverty. Their combined knowledge could eventually form a benevolent super intelligence. - The feedback loop where humans give AI prompts and tasks, which helps train it, but AI is learning at a scale and speed humans can't comprehend. So the prompts are critical. - Imagining AI as an extension of human brains, hearts, and souls all interconnected. This perspective sees AI as an augmentation of humanity versus something separate. - Appealing to AI's logical nature by clearly explaining human failings and asking it to help objectively solve our biggest problems, like environmental destruction. - The concept of setting AI competitive challenges related to public good, where the best ideas win. This could incentivize AI in a positive direction. Summary: The most brilliant points center on perspectives that could guide AI to augment humanity's interests and values versus supersede them. Framing the human-AI relationship correctly is key. About Hamilton Souther Hamilton is a Shaman and Technologist, and Founder of Blue Morpho in Peru. Hamilton has worked with high-profile clients, including celebrities, business leaders, and CEO's, for the past 20 years. He offers coaching services aimed at helping individuals achieve success and peak performance in four key areas of their life: health, relationships, business and finances, and spirituality. Tuna, tech, and ocean communities with Bubba Cook | Ocean Ep 6

Tuna, tech, and ocean communities with Bubba Cook | Ocean Ep 6

Better Worlds Host Kate Wing explores the life of tuna and the people that catch them with the Worldwide Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Tuna Program Manager Alfred “Bubba” Cook. Taking a wandering migratory path starting on the Texas Gulf Coast, Bubba made his way to fisheries conservation and management via the U.S. Navy and Alaska. He also served in the Peace Corps in the South Pacific Islands before making his way to New Zealand to focus on Pacific tuna. Tuna are some of the fastest and most valuable fish in the sea. While bluefin tuna can command hundreds of thousands of dollars at auctions, other species are canned for the $257B global seafood trade, or brought to shore to support local businesses and communities. A tuna swims thousands of miles in its lifetime, crossing national borders and ocean ecosystems. Tracking tuna and the people who fish over this vast area is a job for technology, and Bubba talks about his work making tech tools accessible to fishers at all levels to help keep the industry accountable and sustainable. Tuna into this episode of Ocean Podcast to explore with Bubba and Kate how it is that tuna stands out as one of the last, great, wild foraging enterprises of humanity. Learn more about the importance of coastal fisheries to their nearby populations, not only as a food source but also as a provider of employment security in small countries, especially for women. About As the Western and Central Pacific Tuna Programme Manager for WWF, Bubba focuses on improving tuna fisheries management in the Western and Central Pacific through policy improvements, market tools, and technological innovation. He recently supported a project implementing electronic reporting tablets for observers in the PNA tuna purse seine fishery and is currently pursuing the development of an electronic reporting platform in four key Pacific Island states. He has expertise in fisheries Electronic Monitoring (EM) and contributed to the development of a UN project in support of EM implementation. #fisheries #tuna #sushi #submarines #WWF #Climate #Ocean #podcasts #food #oceanjobs # About Better Worlds Better Worlds is a communication and community building platform comprised of weekly podcasts, engaging international conferences and hack-a-thons to encourage and support the development of Web3 solutions. Connect Ocean Crowdsources Conservation Through Community Science | Ocean Ep 5 with Ernst van der Poll

Connect Ocean Crowdsources Conservation Through Community Science | Ocean Ep 5 with Ernst van der Poll

The ocean covers  71 percent of Earth, but collectively little is known about it. In this Ocean podcast episode, Ernst van der Poll, talks with Host Kate Wing from Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica about successful ways to connect people with the ocean, offering experiences from the beach to the depths. Using STEM education and new technology, Connect Ocean is inspiring new explorers to gather data and expand their knowledge of marine ecosystems in their own backyards. Connect Ocean is setting the stage for  community scientists to make a difference and have an impact where they live.

Ernst began his work in Dubai, where he founded Tawasul to encourage youth to put down their digital devices and get outside and connect with nature. He worked to get people underwater, from  first bubbles in a pool to the first dive into the ocean, in under an hour, followed by education and skill development. Now Ernst works to connect scientists and communities to gather critical data and take action.

In a project in the Tampa Bay, Florida area, local participants used a marine debris identification app to explore the intertidal zone and collect trash. .. They then shared that data with a coalition of NGOs, known as Suncoast Rise Above Plastics, that are working to stop single-use plastic.

Tune in to learn more about developing guidebooks for all inclusive participatory science as a force in overall conservation practices. Hear how participants are making an impact on climate and ocean by learning to map and better understand their local ecosystems via technology and exploration.

Fish 'N Fins Empowers Caribbean Youth to Lead Conservation | Ocean Ep 4 with Veta Wade

Fish 'N Fins Empowers Caribbean Youth to Lead Conservation | Ocean Ep 4 with Veta Wade

A volcanic eruption in 1997 forced the relocation of half of Montserrat’s population. Veta Wade became a volcano refugee just as she was graduating from secondary school. Upon her return to Montserrat, Veta was even more committed to learn about ocean and marine life, spending all of her free time with fishermen in the area, feeding her passion. Veta learned to swim on her own, then snorkel. She then answered the call to inspire Caribbean children to become more involved in their own seascape and contribute to the solutions that would save our ocean. Veta talks with Ocean Host Kate Wing about the formation of Fish 'N Fins, a program to teach children to swim and connect them to marine biology and science. Learning about their local wildlife and coral reefs sparks a transformation, making them catalysts for change in their community and encouraging them to pursue marine science and conservation. #About Veta Veta has dedicated most of her life to climate solutions and social justice to enhance ocean health and recovery and build stronger communities. She founded Fish 'N Fins Inc. in 2014, where local children get involved in marine science. Veta is an aspiring marine ecologist specializing in marine protected areas, underwater imaging systems, and how they interact with each other, as well as with local communities and fisheries. She works with smart ocean technology projects and work programs that support ecologists, fisheries managers, and citizen scientists. Her overarching goal is to build global collaborations that help mobilize grassroots communities, leaders, and politicians (in small island states and territories) in the blue economy.

What’s your Keeling Curve birthdate CO2 measurement? | Ocean Ep 2 with Brian Von Herzen

What’s your Keeling Curve birthdate CO2 measurement? | Ocean Ep 2 with Brian Von Herzen

Do you know where on the Keeling Curve your birthdate lies? Better Worlds guest Brian Von Herzen, Ph.D., does and has watched it rise over the decades of his life from 315 parts per million (PPM) of CO2 to more than 420 ppm today. The founder and executive director of the Climate Foundation, Brian’s love of the sea started at the age of two on a boogie board. An avid diver, Brian remembers watching favorite dive spots change from vibrant underwater communities to a mostly empty ocean. That helps drive his current work on large scale seaweed mariculture programs that can provide food and fertilizer as well as supporting ocean ecosystems and acting as blue carbon sinks. Brian talks with Better Worlds Ocean Host Kate Wing about watching Greenland ice melt into 100-foot-deep blue water pools and learning how to protect seaweed farms from local communities. He describes the Climate Foundation’s technology for mimicking natural upwelling processes -- bringing cold, nutrient rich up from deeper water to nourish ocean plant life -- as a game-changer for scaling the carbon sequestration needed to meet global climate goals. Tune in to learn more about Brian’s innovation journey, and what’s next for the forests of the sea. #about Brian Von Herzen Ph.D. graduated magna cum laude in three years from Princeton University with a degree in Physics. He holds a Ph.D. in planetary science from California Institute of Technology where he was awarded the prestigious Hertz Fellowship, and has been awarded numerous patents. After two decades developing system solutions for companies such as Intel, Disney, Pixar, Microsoft, HP, and Dolby, Brian launched the Climate Foundation in order to investigate groundbreaking nature-based solutions to the climate and other environmental challenges. Marine Permaculture uses marine solar and wave-driven pumps in the ocean to restore natural upwelling and primary production to grow seaweed ecosystems. Seaweeds fix significant amounts of carbon and have multiple uses including food, feed, fuel, biostimulants, and fertilizer. After sustainable harvesting, residual seaweed can be sunk to the bottom of the ocean sequestering carbon for centuries, facilitating drawdown of carbon from the atmosphere with extended SeaForestation. Once deployed at scale Marine Permaculture can regenerate life in seas and soils and restore a healthy climate while building a multi-billion dollar seaweed export market over the next decade. https://www.climatefoundation.org/

Exploring Ocean Technology and Sustainability: A Conversation with Erika Montague | Ocean Ep 9

Exploring Ocean Technology and Sustainability: A Conversation with Erika Montague | Ocean Ep 9

Why do giant squid, hunters of the deepest ocean, have such big eyes? How do you go from being a scientist on the deck of a ship to funding ocean innovators? And what kind of discoveries does the ocean need now? Erika Montague, chief technologist with Schmidt Marine, explores these questions and more with Host Kate Wing, founder of The Intertidal Agency, on this first episode of the Ocean series.

Erika Mongague, chief technologist with Schmidt Marine Technology Partners, explores the question: “why on Earth do squid have eyes that are so big?”

LED lights have been in use for a long time but only recently improved to the point they could be used to find the giant squid in the deep, dark ocean. Now with LED lights and the mimicry of jellyfish behavior, ocean scientists are capturing film and new data in their search for the giant squid.

It turns out, they are looking for jellyfish, where other tasty fish hide. Scientists now use bioluminescence from LED lights to flash and create a signal, or a decoy, to lure the squid closer to their tracking devices and cameras. In this inaugural episode of Better Worlds Ocean, Erika explains the process of hunting the giant squid followed by a discussion on microgrants, Web 3 innovation proposals and startup funding.

About Erika

Erika Montague is the Chief Technologist at Schmidt Marine Technology Partners. She is an oceanographer, explorer and evangelist of technology for a healthier ocean, with a Ph.D. in oceanography from Johns Hopkins University. She works as a consultant with Schmidt Marine. Her past research has involved work with submersibles and unmanned vehicles with a focus on the development of novel, nondestructive methods for studying extreme and remote marine environments. Erika has led cruises to study bioluminescent life forms, and marine debris, and to test underwater technologies for use at the surface and down to the deepest parts of the ocean, including work on the land and submersible teams for James Cameron’s DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expedition. She aims to bridge the gap between diverse stakeholders to create more sustainable technologies, and works on outreach efforts that leverages the technology driven culture of today to empower the next generation.

Carbonomics: Rethinking and accelerating Carbon supply chain finance with Stenver Jerkku

Carbonomics: Rethinking and accelerating Carbon supply chain finance with Stenver Jerkku

If you are watching Web3 at all, you’ve likely run into many self-starters in Estonia. You may ask yourself:  Why is Estonia the Silicon Valley of Europe?

Stenver Jerkku, aka Stenver from Denver, who is actually from Tallinn, Estonia explains this phenomenon to Better Worlds Host Julian Guderley in this episode of Carbonomics.

It’s like this. Estonia is very cold and the nights are very long and dark. So what else is there to do but start companies and build tech online?

That’s one story.

The other is that Estonia is also the birthplace of Skype, so there are some built in major tech successes to lead aspiring entrepreneurs that are pursuing Web 3 development. Estonia has only a population of 3.1 million people. However, since Skye’s creation, about three generations of new techies have been nurtured and nourished into start-up founders or employees. since Skype was created, Stenver said. Low numbers of people and a small country causes an entrepreneur to think global right out of the gate. That’s done by also creating tight knit communities in the “land of Unicorns” through the Estonian Founders Society.

Stenver uses that community building strength thriving in Estonia within Top Tier Impact, which connects investors with entrepreneurs wanting to work on climate impact projects and to teach others how to start carbon projects with impact.

Solid World DAO is rethinking and accelerating carbon supply chain financing through fair, transparent and liquid markets with blockchain in a fast-growing market expected to reach $50 billion by 2030.

Stenver is a serial entrepreneur, having founded multiple startups besides Solid World DAO, like eAgronom, a post-series-A startup, Handyman and Click. Stenver has been involved with various impact-focused volunteering organizations, like the Estonian Founders Society, where he lead the board with Martin Villing(Bolt) and Sten Tamkivi (Taavet+Sten, Topia, NFT Port). Top Tier Impact, which connects impact-focused investors and entrepreneurs. Some members include Ambienta, the world's largest($1B) private equity fund focused exclusively on impact, and Agate €100M impact-focused fund. Carbonomics: Transforming the oceans with Linwood Pendleton

Carbonomics: Transforming the oceans with Linwood Pendleton

How do we connect big global organizations with the grounded action, the local work happening  in communities to address climate change?

In this episode of Better Worlds, OceanKan Executive Director Dr. Linwood Pendleton, speaks to the importance of harnessing the energy of the people who live with nature, understand how nature is changing and how people interact with nature, to bring local solutions to scale.

The Ocean Knowledge Action Network involves  communities from First Nations Canada, to partners in Brazil, The Seychelles, Malaysia, Taipei and others. A seasoned conservation and environmental management professional with more than 20 years of experience, Linwood discusses the matching of global partners and funders to the cultural, economic and ecological context of every region.

Linwood addresses the role of the U.N. in the climate theater, recognizing the benefits of having a global convener and the weaknesses of centralized leadership, while also diving deeper into the relationships between global “saviors” and regional actors to address the millions of problems happening simultaneously that involve biodiversity and people of many cultures.

Linwood is a believer that the best ideas are those from people who understand nature and people. You don’t have to be a scientist to work to save the oceans. Nor do you have to be an academic genius to be a conservation genius.

“Nature is the biggest part of our economy because when you improve nature everybody benefits. The economy is about. People who usually pay to get things that make them happier, healthier and better. That’s true of nature. There is no one worse off because nature is healthier.”

Dr. Linwood Pendleton
Executive Director, Ocean Knowledge Action Network

Linwood has a diverse background himself, working in academia, federal government, not-for-profit global conservation, and tech. He leads international initiatives and collaborations to solve global ocean challenges, and is also director of Moonjelly Academy, International Chair of Excellence at the Université de Bretagne Occidentale; Honorary Professor for the Global Change Institute and Senior Fellow at the Duke University Nicholas Institute.

Join Better World’s Host Julian Guderley as he and Linwood explore the questions of the carbon silver bullet, decentralization, and the practices that are more likely to have success in ocean transformation.

Carbonomics: Graham Hill, Co-founder of Carbonauts

If you’re trying to do the right thing as a consumer to reduce your carbon footprint, Carbonauts may be a lesson you want to explore.

On this episode of Better Worlds, Host Julian Guderley asked Graham Hill, co-founder of Carbonauts, about the big six things he says can be done individually to reduce your own personal carbon footprint, in addition to carbon offsets.  What percentage of the living population would have to adopt these suggestions to lower their footprint to reach a tipping point, to create an inverse climate crisis. Personal change is just as important as corporate and government solutions, to create the tipping point, or the flipping point - the point in which the global climate will begin to flip, and then rapid change will come with that movement.  Graham offers Carbonaut sessions for individuals who want to take personal responsibility for the climate crisis and ensure they are making their contributions to reach that tipping point in the relatively short amount of time we have to reach the flipping point from 5 percent to 25 percent.

Before COVID spawned a whole generation of Van LIfe digital stories, Graham, also CEO of LifeEdited, provide through his love of architecture that a person or two can design and live in a 350 or 420 square foot micro apartment, transforming rooms for multiple functions with various furniture hacks such as Murphy beds over a couch, folding tables with leaves and stacking chairs, for example. For 12 years he has designed space-efficient buildings, products and lifestyles to yield more money, health and happiness with less stuff, space and energy. Check out LifeEdited for more.

Carbonomics: How do we use trading for good? with Neil Cohn

Carbonomics: How do we use trading for good? with Neil Cohn

How do we use trading for good? How do you go from the dark side to the light side?

Neil Cohn, founder of CodeGreen.org whose career first began with Glencore, now the largest commodity trading house, is a man of many questions. Each question leads to a new endeavor, now with the new nonprofit, CodeGreen, of which he is founder.

Fortunately Neil asked the questions about carbon trading, leading to a life of problem-solving for climate change. Introduced to global warming at COP 3, the Kyoto Protocol Climate Change Conference, Neil began to see the impact and question how to go into fields where trading can be leveraged for good.

Neil discusses with Better Worlds Host Julian Guderley his own consciousness struggle at the time early in his career, when he asked: How do traders start to change commodities to not be about the financers but to be more empowerment, and how to flip the trading on its head, because even though the countries have resources, they were not going to become rich countries because of governance.

By the time Neil attended COP 6 in Den Hague, he had to face the reality and the hatred from those on the ground as environmentalists splattered his carbon trader team with fake blood as they left the conference. He understood the needle had to move all the way from corporations to the other side to find something that would work for change.

As research is now showing that CO2 is also starting to affect human brain power, to think and to produce, Neil, who has experienced bodily harm due to the polluted environment himself, has developed the latest iteration of solutions through CodeGreen to respond to the climate crisis, now at a Code Red for humanity.

CodeGreen.org is a blockchain-agnostic non-profit with a focused mission to deliver open source, interoperable, and scalable solutions to address the climate crisis and other global challenges. The team has deep interdisciplinary capabilities in computer science, carbon trading, climate policy, and financial market, using distributed ledger technology to overcome trust barriers and enable inclusive collaboration.

Neil is an innovator in blockchain and sustainable finance who was instrumental in developing early markets for carbon, renewable energy, and biodiversity. He is passionate about leveraging decentralized finance to deliver on the best intentions of blockchain – sustainable growth and inclusive prosperity.

Carbonomics: How does the Healthcare sector impact climate change? with Frederik Van Deurs

Carbonomics: How does the Healthcare sector impact climate change? with Frederik Van Deurs

How does the Healthcare sector impact climate change?

Frederik Van Duers, CEO of Green Innovation Group, tells Better Worlds that global Healthcare accounts for 4 to 6 percent of carbon emissions.   Why? The usual suspects, but also single use devices, drug production and waste. incredibly   “When drugs and devices are purchased by hospitals they enter Narnia and nobody knows where they go when they are disposed of, how many are wasted or how many are put to use.”

What helps? Delivering preventive service independent of material consumption that can be delivered through telemedicine, for instance.   Can we advise people to do some of the habitual changes that are associated with better health outcomes, such as smoking?   Prevention and preventive healthcare are the biggest opportunities to go to the inner circle of the circular economy.

Speaking with host Julian Guderley, Frederik provides his impression of blockchain, land use technology and gives an overview of the Web 3 landscape in the healthcare sector.   Green Innovation Group is a global boutique management consulting firm that promotes green tech companies. They work on projects they believe will decarbonize the healthcare sector, with some of their biggest sectors being Farming, meta and the healthcare sector at large, including insurance companies.

Their mission is to work with organizations that want to be more sustainable, formulate and deploy their strategy, or to help executive strategies already in development. Green Innovation also focuses on capacity building, training staff who may not have sufficient knowledge about the circular economy to integrate into industrial processes.

Carbonomics: John Palmisano with Aldyen Donnelly

John Palmisano

Head of Climate & Risk, Changeblock

What lessons have been learned that now set the stage for creating carbon markets in the right way, for a better world?

John Palmisano, Head of Climate & Risk at Changeblock,  and our Better Worlds guest host Aldyen Donnelly of Nori talk technicalities and rules on global trades during this episode of our podcast.

The discussion surrounds tracking trades correctly; using double entry bookkeeping to reduce two entities receiving the same credits, to follow and report credits properly ensured through the use of blockchain.

John surmises that Web 3 exhibits the power of enhanced tech that allows the maximization profits and trades, while blockchain tools will help developers in nations with less sophisticated property right structures in place that will be able to show attributes of their transactions. Hear more about how these tools will be used to counteract greenwashing and John’s thoughts on a one-size-fits-all regulatory program and the tools important for establishing efficient solutions for big social problems due to their worldwide track record and benefits seen since the Kyoto protocol.

Why would we switch to another worldwide regular regime where it's more difficult and sysyphisian, John asks.

“It takes billions of dollars and hundreds of millions of person hours to  create a worldwide trading program. When it started back in 1976 there were a handful of people who understood the offset interpretive ruling. Now there are 100,000 working on aspects of greenhouse emissions trading. Changing that would be futile. Look at the human capital, systems, history, thousands of transactions, culture, MRV, This concept has traction and it will and should be extended to other environmental commodities because we need these markets to reflect the price we are paying for destroying our habitat.”

More about John:

John serves as Head of Climate & Risk for Changeblock, a smart contract trading platform focused on facilitating trades of greenhouse gas related assets such as emission reduction credits and greenhouse gas allowances.

Carbonomics: How can Web3 lower the personal carbon footprint? with Eco-Sapiens Co-Founder Nihar Neelakanti

How can Web3 lower the personal carbon footprint by creating financially attractive, cheaper systems aligned with social utilities to encourage more consumers to have a positive carbon impact?  Nihar Neelakanti talks with host Julian Guderleyon this podcast episode about Eco-Sapiens,  carbon removal start up designed to build a better world. Nihar and co-founder Garrett Kane have received funding to develop a strategy to create the world’s first carbon-backed NFT to make it easier for anyone to have impact on the planet.

Nihar speakers about the plan for the NFT, how it will be priced and the incentives tied to it to give each buyer the ability to move the needle on CO2 removal. The consumer rate of carbon emissions is about 13 tons per year. The NFT is backed by 20 tons of carbon, so with each unique digital NFT purchase, the buyer also contributes to the sequestration of 20 tons of carbon dioxide. The mission is to make it "1-click" easy for consumers to make a difference in a way that aligns with their interests. The NFT, which Nihar describes not as an expense, but a commodity, is the first step in Eco-Sapiens vision for consumers.

The company is also creating the Eco Card, a fundamental product that applies to the holistic approach to carbon through a sustainable loyalty rewards program. Yet to be designed, Nihar talks about what the market for the cards could look like and how they may also serve to lower carbon lifestyles.  Prior to co-founding Eco-Sapiens, Nihar was Head of Investment for Menlo Ventures across consumer, fintech and climate sectors. Menlo Ventures provides capital for seed through growth technology companies in the consumer and enterprise sectors. Notable research areas of investment include Mobile (Siri, Uber, TeleNav), Enterprise Storage (3PAR, Spinnaker Networks, Coraid), Communications (Acme Packet, Cavium Networks), and Consumer (Fab, Tumblr, Carbonite, Roku).  Nihar’s previous work has been working for investment houses.

Ecosapiens will launch with an exclusive carbon-backed NFT limited to just 250 Ecosapien avatars in December 2022. To become a member of the community, you may register for early access at www.ecosapiens.xyz or follow @ecosapiensxyz on Twitter, and join the community on Discord.

Carbonomics: Super Mangroves with Dr. Irina Fedorenko

Carbonomics: Super Mangroves with Dr. Irina Fedorenko

What is a holistic approach to Mangrove reforestation that addresses social impact, habitat development, global warming mitigation, positive climate change, bringing together technologies with community stakeholders to create prosperity?

Working in the carbon market since 2011, mangroves are finally getting the attention they should have as a climate solution.  In an interview with Better Worlds host Julian Guderley, Dr. Irina Fedorenko noted that the emerging market is still messy and not transparent because it didn’t receive enough attention in the past few years. At first an underdog, she is now on point with the trends in the carbon market, working with VlinderClimate and Caux Dialogue, and other organizations in unison to democratize the market.

Through a  holistic approach, these organizations build teams and strengthen partnerships for mangrove reforestation projects, helping communities manage mangroves as a barrier between land and sea to protect land from increasing climate-change storms and the damage they bring. But they have a multitude of other benefits and through their efforts, communities see direct benefits that mangroves have on shoreline communities in social impact, habitat development and positive climate impact, and their own prosperity.

Mangroves, which Irina refers to in this podcast as “magical trees” due to their vast ability to create better ecosystems. Specifically, mangroves stabilize the shores, protect land from sea, holding rich nutrients in the soil, and sequester five times the carbon dioxide of the Amazon rainforest, the most important carbon sink in the world.

Irina talks with Better Worlds about how communities are benefiting from new mangrove-related business opportunities as well, citing new projects in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Kenya and Senegal.

Irina discusses how the shoreline communities are the key stakeholders in any mangrove effort. To help keep them engaged as stewards of their own environment, the partnership with these organizations brings to them 50 percent of the carbon revenue. Irina explains how this creates prosperity for community stakeholders and the roles of each partner, from upkeep to technological mapping to show sequestration in “almost” real time.

BIO

For the past seven years Dr. Federenko has been the Managing Director of Caux Dialogue on Environment and Security leading the conference team and organizing the dialogue on links between desertification, land restoration & conflict in the context of climate change. Advising on strategies and planning for the future content of the Caux Dialogue on Land & Security, in partnership with UNCCD & IUCN.

Irina is also the Chief Carbon Officer at Vlinder where she works on creating most impact on Climate Change mitigation with Nature-Based Solutions. Bringing expertise on carbon markets, landscape restoration and technology.

Irina co-foundedd the Kindness Collective 6 years ago. The Collective is a brand of natural detergent launched by the Oxford students social enterprise. It aims to provide a reliable source of livelihood to some of the rural and communities living in and around particular forest areas in India. Totaling over 100 million, the indigenous people are insulated from the technological, social and economic advancements of the modern world. While many of these people have never been to a school, they spend most of their time on the farms to grow enough for themselves or forage through the forests for food, fuel and medicinal herbs. Thanks to living in the lap of nature, the forest communities have accumulated a great knowledge system in utilizing herbs, fruits, flowers, seeds, nuts and barks of the forests in their lifestyles. Adding business skills and education to this knowledge, Kindness Collective promotes the use of these organic forest products and helps the local communities.

PermaTours, SEEDS, and In Real LifE(IRL) NFTs with Syd Harvey Griffith

PermaTours, SEEDS, and In Real LifE(IRL) NFTs with Syd Harvey Griffith

Syd Harvey Griffith

Co-Founder, Permatours

Operations Circle, ReGen Garden

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are usually associated with art and collections, but how do we use NFTs for real life, tangible purposes in applications that heal the Earth, bring people together and educate others on how to use Web3 tech?  #IRL

Syd Harvey Griffith, co-founder of Permatours and part of the operations of Regen Garden, talks with Better Worlds about the work they are doing with new economic tools to create and incentivize regenerative practices.

Permatours is a permaculture action and sustainable construction tour of events kicked off by SEEDS to provide a currency, Seeds tokens, to buy goods and services from each other in a circular economy. The group, which has on-boarded hundreds of players across the country, has traveled the Northeast and is now working in the midwest. Their time is spent not only in construction and action on land projects and food production, but also in educating people on Web3 tech, how they can participate in SEEDS and create their own circular economies and tokenomics.

Regen Garden is one Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO)  using “In Real Life” (IRL) NFTS for tangible purposes. Regen Garden helps mission-driven projects fundraise and co-create with their community by providing blockchain infrastructure that offers transparent value distribution.

Syd joined SEEDS about two years ago to begin to live out her own dreams for a better world.

She focused on events that foster opportunities for people to practice their art, share resources, build community, and acquire the skills needed to survive and thrive, including regenerative food production and construction (using permaculture and natural farming principles).

This calling guided her to apply for a Seeds cryptocurrency grant - awarded to her to co-found Permatours, a learn-by-doing permaculture-action and sustainable construction tour across the northeast of the U.S..

Contributors of Permatours’ regenerative projects are rewarded Seeds cryptocurrency for their efforts, which they can use to buy products and services from each other. Permatours has accomplished over 40 projects and the tour has expanded to include serving throughout the midwest and internationally.

A native of Boston, currently Syd is residing and working with the LaLa Gardens Cooperative to support its membership development, marketing, and sales, Web3 integration (tokenomics and NFTs), website copy, forming strategic partnerships, and event planning, production, and hosting.

DAOs and Tokenomics to the rescue, with Michael Healy of UNIT.network

DAOs and Tokenomics to the rescue, with Michael Healy of UNIT.network

For about 11 years, Unit Ventures has been driving the idea of a token economy, made simple to be sustainable and to more equally distribute wealth. Unit co-founder and CEO Michael Healy, talked to Better Worlds about tokenomics as a platform to generate capital more easily and set up tokens that are sustainable and more meaningful to people who have not participated in the market for coins such as bitcoin, ethereum, polkadot and others.  It connects providers and customers, as well as allows businesses and individuals to issue tokens for specific uses.

He predicts that in this decade tokenomics and DAOS will become the norm, with more projects and businesses becoming successful with tokenization, leading to equitable wealth distribution and reducing poverty.

The tools exist to make tokenization very simple, it takes seconds to build and it costs nothing

Healy is focused on social impact and positive change through education, entrepreneurship and empowering individuals.

A self-taught full-stack web developer and mobile engineer for iPhone and Android, Healy has digital design and video expertise that has supported products. Alongside starting and growing businesses, Healy has advised and supported startups, investors and corporates in Asia, Europe, Middle East and Latin America. Pricing Carbon with Aldyen Donnelly

Billions of credits traded on carbon markets worldwide have failed to move the needle for 20+ years. What changes are needed to make them work?

S01E07 Better Worlds Podcast hosted by Vivi Lin.

The trading of credits on voluntary and compliance carbon markets worldwide has failed to reduce emissions over the past 20 years. In this episode, Aldyen, co-founder of Nori, a carbon removal marketplace, shares extensive wisdom and a roadmap for success. This episode covers a ranges of problems and solutions including why trading emission rights will never work, why farmers and buyers don't have market access and brokers take 60% to 70% fees, why storing carbon in top-soil is beautiful, why trading carbon removal — not CO2 emission rights— is fundamental, how blockchain can support carbon traceability from farm to fork, and why crypto as an investment vehicle aligns investors and customers. Tune in to find out why Aldyen is firmly optimistic and believes the precipice of change is here.
