S2/E18: The Rapper Who Gave Up Bling For His Jewish Identity, Nissim Black

S2/E18: The Rapper Who Gave Up Bling For His Jewish Identity, Nissim Black

.#43 Season 2 - Episode 18: On Today's Episode we are joined by Nissim Black

The former drug dealer tells of his journey from a tough Seattle neighborhood to an ultra-orthodox family life in Jerusalem

Nissim Black has been a gangsta rapper, a gang member, and a faith seeker. But it is his current incarnation that is here to stay: an African American Hasidic Jew who brings sharp beats and hooked-filled rhymes to the masses.

The first single of 2020, “Mothaland Bounce” is a confluence of everything he’s ever done, and everywhere he’s ever been. The vibe is old school, but the song is thoroughly fresh, pairing big beats with an African hook and a catchy chorus for a video that has already garnered 4.5 million views on YouTube

The new tunes feature Black’s melodic singing mixed with silky smooth beats and his nimble verbal sparring; Black’s music has always leaned heavily on melody, but he had to wait for hip hop to catch up. After a long discovery process, both musically and personally, Black has finally found his true identity. “All of those journeys—being in a gang, being on the football team was a part of me trying to say, ‘I belong to something greater than myself, I know where, but I belong somewhere,'” he says. "It's almost like trying to find that home."

S2/E 17: The Insiders Secrets To Everything Beauty, Wellness, and Skincare - But The Healthy Way- With Jeannie Jarnot, Founder Of Beauty Heroes

#42 Season 2 - Episode 17: On Today's Episode we are joined by Jeannie Jarnot, the Founder of Beauty Heroes.

Longtime spa director and healthy beauty expert, Jeannie Jarnot, is on a mission to deliver beauty you can trust, one Hero product at a time. After uncovering the prevalence of toxic ingredients in the spa industry – and how they might have contributed to her own infertility – Jeannie began her quest to make healthy beauty the rule rather than the exception. The complexity of navigating cosmetic ingredients only fueled her passion to make it simple to discover safe, effective and luxurious skincare. Today, as the founder of Beauty Heroes, Jeannie brings a lifetime of beauty, wellness and ritual to her company and her customers, delivering healthy beauty through the thrill of Discovery.

By working only with brands who have an unwavering commitment to ethical sourcing, purity and quality, she has become the industry standard bearer on ingredient integrity, establishing her company as the most trusted source for healthy beauty. Jeannie works directly with brand founders to hand select, test and approve each product featured by Beauty Heroes. Yet, Jeannie’s curation process is more than skin deep; she is passionate about championing progressive brands that make sustainability and waste reduction central to their business model.

Feeling called to have a deeper conversation about beauty and wellness for people and the planet, Jeannie pioneered Project Blue Beauty, a platform to connect conscious consumers  with beauty brands that are going from ‘green’ to ‘blue’, shining a spotlight on brands that are not just minimizing their environmental footprint, but actually leaving the planet better than they found it. Beauty Heroes is walking the talk and embracing Blue Beauty through its philanthropic partnership with One Tree Planted. This collaboration was the inspiration behind Beauty Heroes’ first lifestyle products – glass straws and eco-luxurious utensil sets, available in the Beauty Store. Jeannie takes a 360° look at the products she curates for Beauty Heroes, ensuring ethical sourcing, conscious packaging and brand values are carefully considered. Through Project Blue Beauty, Jeannie and her team celebrate initiatives, share best practices and inspire action."

S2/E 11: Tobi Rubinstein On Faith And Fashion ~ Can They Coexist?

S2/E 11: Tobi Rubinstein On Faith And Fashion ~ Can They Coexist?

#36: Season 2 Episode 11:  On Today's Episode we are joined by Tobi Ruinstein.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tobi began her esteemed career in fashion by being recruited by an exclusive manufacturer for Victoria's Secret and JC Penney. She then moved on to partnering with Nicole Miller for Childrenswear and developing Crunch Gym's activewear line. In 2001 TR and her partners created "Chedda", an innovative men's urban brand specifically designed for mass-market giant K-Mart. 2009, The House of Faith and Fashion was her step into reality TV and a successful lecture and radio series as well as appearances on WABC, WNBC, Lifetime, I24, Huffington Post, Page Six, and other media outlets.
The goal is consistently fusing spirituality with fashion and other creative outlets, interviewing the likes of Patricia Fields, Bagdley Mishka, etc., about their faith within their craft. In 2014, The Tahor Group was founded upon the idea that fashion needs to step off the traditional runway onto the more creative ground. Closing Central Park South for a moving fashion show with horses and carriages during NYFW was the start of many "out of the box" collaborations.
Stitched along this path, beginning with her Bais Yaackov education , Jewish leadership and Rebbitzen , she was ordained and found further meaning by an in-depth study of Jewish thought and Torah .,It led to the combination of both her loves into one solid purpose.
The House of Faith and Fashion began as a weekly column for a local newspaper and flourished into a book. The book continues her work of weaving spirituality with essays that include top fashion editors, international designers, artists, jewelers, and influencers along with this generation’s Jewish thinkers as Gedale Fenster , Yaackov Klein , Rav Doniel Katz and Rabbi Shalom Arush .
Tobi is a lifelong leader in philanthropy and charities. She has done fundraising and board service for various organizations as Steven Spielberg's Children at Heart, United Nation's Montessori School, Tel Hashomer Hospital, Sharre Tzedek Hospital, and OR Movement. She is also director of the public relations team for Gedale Fenster, Breslov Miami.
S2/E 10: Michali Weinstein On How Her Father's Murder Gave Her Strength To Accomplish Goals & The Tenacity To Share Her Truth.
S2/E 10: Michali Weinstein On How Her Father's Murder Gave Her Strength To Accomplish Goals & The Tenacity To Share Her Truth.
#35: S2/E10: On today's episode we are welcomed by Michali Weinstein. She is a dear friend of mine who is a successful mom, wife, graphic designer, event planner, cofounder of Couture for a Cause. She uses her platform to raise money for those in need, while also advocating for important causes to her such as current events with Israel and COVID19.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Michal Lara Weinstein is a busy mom of 4 who has perfected the art of juggling multiple businesses and causes. A graphic designer for 23 years under her business MLWDESIGN, she opened Events 360 in 2017, a full circle of creative services and one stop shop for your event. Located on Central Avenue in the heart of Cedarhurst, her showroom is a pre-teens dream filled with colorful swag and everything you can imagine to enhance an event. Michal is also co-founder of Couture for a Cause, a non-profit organization that has raised hundreds of thousands towards worthy Jewish causes through fashion shows and other creative means.

Michal was the designer of the famous Lion of Zion logo that raised funds for the family and causes of Ari Fuld, HYD who was murdered by a terrorist. In March 2020 when the pandemic hit, Michal created a campaign she titled KARANA (call out to G-d) that raised funds for families impacted.

Michal is an outspoken advocate for Israel and has developed a social media following where she shares truthful censored information to thousands. Recently her 22K Instagram account @mlwdesignny (as well as 2 backups) were de-platformed with no explanation, fueling her to continue onward and not give up.

She attributes her tenacity and strength to the tragic murder of her father at age 10 and the hardships that followed. During the early days of quarantine, Michal began writing and publicly sharing a memoir that was very well received and she hopes to finish it soon. Michal attributes her life experience to giving her the strength to navigate and lead in these difficult times and she continues to be a voice to those afraid to speak while juggling a very busy life.

S2/EP 6: Can Anything Be Done To Save A Marriage? Author Dr Peter Lynn of Not A Partnership explains

Welcome to Season 2, Episode 6. On today's episode I chat with Dr Peter Lynn, co author (Tod Jacobs) of the book "Not A partnership - Why We Keep Getting Marriage Wrong and How We Can Get It Right"

Beyond being a typical collaboration between two authors or scholars, this book represents the culmination of more than fifteen years of work that Tod and Peter have done together in the area of marriage. The students of the institute they lead have provided a living laboratory for how to prepare for marriage, face and ultimately overcome its classic and idiosyncratic challenges.

The pair’s primary objective with their students as they head towards marriage is to help them focus both on developing a mature and idealistic vision of marriage as the primary vehicle to create wholeness, meaning, purpose and happiness in their lives, and on working to perfect the character issues that lie at the core of a successful spouse — giving, empathy, focus, staying power and a strong desire to help build the other.

Their work combines practical and mystical Jewish wisdom with modern theory and techniques, and with experience accrued through years of real world implementation and practice. Their unique but differing backgrounds and accomplishments broaden the impact of their work and partnership still further.

Tod Jacobs

Tod Jacobs is Director of the David Robinson Institute for Jewish Heritage in Jerusalem, which he co-founded in 2005. Prior to his current role teaching and counseling his students and alumni, he enjoyed a distinguished career on Wall Street as one of the leading authorities on the telecommunications industry globally. As a managing director at JP Morgan and before that a partner at Sanford C. Bernstein and Company, Tod acted as a frequent commentator on network television and in leading newspapers and magazines, and testified several times before the U.S. Congress as an expert on telecom and media issues. His credits in print and broadcast journalism, where he worked prior to Wall Street, include nominations for both the Pulitzer Prize for investigative journalism and the Emmy Award. Tod lives in Jerusalem with his family.

Dr. Peter Lynn

Peter Lynn has served as Dean of Students at the David Robinson Institute for Jewish Heritage since its inception. An MA in Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) from the University of Pennsylvania and a PsyD in Human and Organizational Psychology, Peter lectures at Touro College in Jerusalem. He is also the Founder and Director of Greatness Within Seminars, where he helps empower individuals and organizations through the application of Positive Psychology. An accomplished athlete and Ironman finisher, Peter was captain of the U.S. World Duathlon Team. Peter lives in Jerusalem with his family.

S2/ EP 5: Clean Beauty Cleo and Coco Founder Suzannah Raff

S2/ EP 5: Clean Beauty Cleo and Coco Founder Suzannah Raff

Welcome to Episode 5 of Season 2!

On today's episode I chat with Suzannah Raff all about clean beauty, what it means to her, an how she's changing the world one deodorant at a time...

Suzannah Raff is a New York native and mother of four who is committed to living an authentic life spiritually, physically, and professionally. Over the years she has earned both a Master’s degree in Business along with a Master’s degree in Social Work. Cleo+Coco was born out of a passion to learn more about toxic ingredients, the negative effect they have on our bodies, and the benefits of plant-based ingredients to create authentic products that are safe and effective. After years of listening, experimenting, teaching, and learning, Cleo+Coco’s next generation of natural was born.

“One of my motivations in developing Cleo+Coco products was to provide products that I felt were safe for my pregnant/nursing self and now my pre-teen children to use. That meant minimizing our exposure to toxic chemicals, synthetic fragrances, aluminum, and talc. It is interesting to note that my maternal grandfather was a chemist and came to New York from Europe as a holocaust survivor and built a very successful spice factory together with his brother. So, it seems that formulating is in my blood. Really, it’s in my fingertips and my nose. I can smell a new dish and recreate it from sensing the spices. Same with perfumes. And now I’m able to reformulate natural deodorants into what they should be, Clean+Confident, conscious, and pleasurable without compromise.”

EP 20: Heal with Gold through Kintsugi with Miriam Gold of Mikah Fashion

EP 20: Heal with Gold through Kintsugi with Miriam Gold of Mikah Fashion

Chat with Betty Episode 20 - Heal with Gold through Kintsugi, a chat with Miriam Grunhaus of Mikah Fashion.

In Japanese culture, pottery that break is not trashed, rather it is repaired with lacquer and gold or silver. The end result is more beautiful, valuable, and stronger than the original. The message is that broken is not a reason to be discarded; but rather an opportunity to improve. A message that through the process of mending, we become even more beautiful, valuable and unique than before. The art is called Kintsugi.

After 25 years as a marketer with expertise in Ethics and Compliance, Miriam Grunhaus, native of Brazil, entered the world of Fashion Design. Miriam’s commitment is to the women she serves. After learning about Kintsugi and being empowered by its message, Miriam decided that her brand will be a source of hope and friendship to women.

Mikah’s mission is to empower women to accept themselves along with their imperfections and limitations. We want women to “wear their scars” with pride, to understand that each one of us is a unique work in progress. We want women to know they are beautiful, not despite their circumstances, but because of them. We want to empower women to own their struggles, and in doing so, to own their strength.

Inspired by interviews Miriam has conducted with women who have gone through adversity but healed and found joy, Miriam is launching a healing and resilience course called Heal with Gold she is also coming out with a book on the subject in 2020.

EP 12: Bringing a Whole New Meaning to "Influencing" with Elaine Chaya

Ever wonder what it's like being an influencer? Curious to hear more from a top blogger and content creator? Would you be surprised that one could find an imbalance in all that glitz and glam....?

On Episode 12 of Chat With Betty you will learn from Elaine Chaya, a Persian Jewish babe who shares all things with love to inspire you to be YOU. With over 93K following, she's definatly figured it all out...

 Elaine started off mainly focusing on fashion and creating her brand (formerly known as @fashionlaine). But over time, she want to find a way to implement her everyday type self into the content and inspire colorful and brightness not just through pictures but through actions and words.

She created the “Woke Up This Way Challenge” that encouraged people to “bring realness back to social media” and the Class of Quarantine 2020 movement that reminded people that we’re really “all in this together” in a fun cheeky graduating class type way while tying it to a pay it forward partnership with the LA Food Bank to provide meals to people in need during these times. "My journey has shown me, and what I hope for it to show others, how there are so many ways that you can go about being you and expressing your messages with the world."

EP 11: Giving The Gift of Literacy with Leslie Gang, CoFounder of Hindi's Libraries

EP 11: Giving The Gift of Literacy with Leslie Gang, CoFounder of Hindi's Libraries

Did you know that in low income families there is an average of 4 to 0  children's books in their home?

In August of 2018, our community lost an incredible human being, Dr. Hindi Krinsky, at the young age of 32. To continue Hindi's legacy, family and friends chose to build three free-standing libraries in her children's school. In order to fill these libraries, we reached out to the community for gently used books.

What started as a small school project has quickly become a national literacy initiative. Hindi's Libraries collects and donates new and gently used children’s books to more than 385 organizations throughout the world. Together, we are able to continue Hindi's legacy and share her love of literature with thousands of children. They have since collected over 99,000 books which we've donated to more than 380 organizations throughout the world spanning across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Africa, India & Israel.

Today I chat with Leslie Gang, co-founder of Hindi's Libraries who shares with us the tragic story which was then so beautifully turned into an enormous place to give back to those in literacy need.

Ep 10: How to make your dreams reality, even when conflicting. Tamir Goodman,The Jewish Jordan chats

Ep 10: How to make your dreams reality, even when conflicting. Tamir Goodman,The Jewish Jordan chats

Tamir Goodman, The Jewish Jordon on Episode 10 of Chat With Betty!
Ever wonder what it would be like to sacrifice one of your dreams, your inner most passion and drive, something you call your absolute purpose in life for another equally fundamental part of who you are? What would you do? How would you choose one over the other? How would you stay confident and focused? Would you plunge under pressure?
In todays episode, hear how Tamir's fervency for the sport of basketball did not disallow him to keep his belief and practice of his religion. His resilience, and innermost faith, in fact, allowed him to have an even stronger purpose towards playing basketball.
Dubbed "The Jewish Jordan" by Sports Illustrated, he is a former professional basketball player and current successful entrepreneur, coach, educator and motivational speaker. Tamir then made history as the first Jewish basketball player to play D-I college and professional basketball without playing on the Jewish Sabbath. Despite receiving a full scholarship to number-one ranked University of Maryland, Tamir chose to play for D-I Towson University, as their schedule better accommodated his religious observance. Tamir was featured on 60 Minutes, ESPN, CNN, Fox and many others. He was covered in The New York Times, The Washington Post and in media sources across the United States, Israel and around the world. n 2002, Tamir fulfilled his dream of moving to Israel when he was signed by top Israeli and European League basketball team, Maccabi Tel Aviv. Former NBA Coach, David Blatt, was the team’s coach at the time. In 2004, Tamir took a break from playing basketball to serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) where he was awarded “Most Outstanding Soldier.”
Tamir currently runs a world class summer overnight basketball camp in Jerusalem for players from around the world. Tamir is also the founder of Zone190, a training device being used in the NBA, and of Sport Strings Tzitzit. He is the published author of the “The Jewish Jordan’s Triple Threat,” an international motivational speaker, and a sports and business consultant. Tamir holds a B.A. in communications and lives in Jerusalem with his wife and five kids.
