The Road to Hell, 1782

The Road to Hell, 1782

Winter Hike in the Hocking Hills is coming on January 20, 2024. (Find more info here: The Hocking Hills) Those hiking the trail during the event may come upon some spirits. Of course, Old Man Retzler and his baying hound are known to show up at Old Man’s Cave, and the Pale Lady follows hikers at Ash Cave. But between the two areas, the trail will lead along Queer Creek and to Cedar Falls, where ghosts are said to tarry. Their peculiar screams are explained as this--

In the early 1800s, a mill powered by the waters of Queer Creek sat on the rim of Cedar Falls. Nearby was a massive beech tree with words engraved in its ancient trunk, “This is the road to hell, 1782.”

You can find this story and others in my book Haunted Hocking Hills.

Tailypo

Tailypo

Welcome to Sometime Between Dusk and Dawn Ghost Stories. This episode is written and produced by me, Jannette Quackenbush, with folklore drawn from many resources, including Uncle Remus Returns, Brer Rabbit and the Witch-Rabbit African American folktales collected by Joel Chandler Harris and The Journal of American Folklore.  There is more than just this podcast. You can buy my book series on Amazon and other bookstores.

Today’s story is Tailypo. An old woodsman finds there can be disastrous consequences when he takes something that does not belong to him.

The Y-City Cryptid Festival at Zane’s Landing Park in Zanesville, Ohio, is coming up on Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This family-friendly event is a mix of cryptid creatures near Muskingum County and pop culture. There will be craft vendors, various other vendors, food trucks, art, a beer garden, and much more, including me with my books to sell. When most think of local cryptids, they think of Bigfoot or Grassman. In years of old in Zanesville, this story was told around the hearth and based on old folklore of a creature called Tailypo and what happens if you take something that is not yours!

Hitchhiking Christmas Ghost . . .In the Spirit of the Season, Would You Offer Her a Ride?

Welcome to Sometime Between Dusk and Dawn Ghost Stories. This episode is written and produced by me, Jannette Quackenbush, with folklore drawn from many resources. There is more than just this podcast. You can buy my West Virginia Ghost Stories book series on Amazon and in local bookstores.

It is time to dredge up ghost stories from Christmases past and pass them along as tradition allows because in days of old, the time to tell the most terrifying stories around the fireplace was in the chilliest days around Christmas. I would love to sit in a rickety rocking chair, letting the rockers creak and grind on the planks of an old wooden floor, near midnight and before a fire burning low to tell this story to you--I cannot . . . Oh, but maybe I can. Sit back. Relax. And let me tell you a haunting tale. . .

The Abandoned: Pennsylvania's Abandoned Turnpike and Sideling Tunnel

The Abandoned: Pennsylvania's Abandoned Turnpike and Sideling Tunnel

The Abandoned: Pennsylvania's Abandoned Turnpike and Sideling Tunnel may not be as deserted as people think. The old turnpike is on many people’s bucket lists to visit, although few have the guts to take this forsaken post-apocalyptic-looking road and follow it through an abandoned tunnel that is 1.3 miles long, pitch-black in some places, and just plain creepy. However, it is not enough that it appears isolated and friendless. There are things of the supernatural, too, that lurk here. Take a ride with me along this abandoned highway and maybe add it to your bucket list. Or come face to face with the supernatural within.

The Legend of the Bunny-Man

The Legend of the Bunny-Man

It always seems appropriate to feature some theme-based, folklore-related post for each holiday. Most are easy to come by like redeeming ghosts on Christmas Eve, dead, angry lovers on Valentine’s Day, and Halloween is a no-brainer because it celebrates every kind of ghost story, folktale, and urban legend. However, Easter has always eluded me, and over the years, I have managed to sidestep it completely. This time is different, though, because I discovered a most frightening legend, but with a little twist. Full disclosure—the tale would not have much to do with the Easter holiday if it were not for the mythical mammal involved mostly because it originated in October of 1970—This is The Legend of Bunny-Man of Fairfax County, Virginia.

Little Lost Ghost of Bluff Mountain, Virginia

Little Lost Ghost of Bluff Mountain, Virginia

Welcome to Sometime Between Dusk and Dawn Ghost Stories. This episode is written and produced by me, Jannette Quackenbush, with folklore drawn from many resources, including clippings from historic newspapers, Children lost in the mountains by Timothy Hupp, and J.B. Huffman’s Little Lost Boy in the Mountains of Virginia. There is more than just this podcast. You can buy my book series on Amazon and in bookstores. And watch for my upcoming book Appalachian haunted hikes, where this story will be passed along. Today’s story is Little Lost Ghost of Bluff Mountain, about a boy who disappeared into the forest, never to return . . . alive. But now he comes back in ghostly form.

It is one of the stories (about Ottie Cline Powell) that I'm working on for my newest book on Appalachian ghost hikes. And yes, I hike all the trails in my books. You can check out my other ghostly books: https://smile.amazon.com/Jannette-Quackenbush/e/B009RN009M or find them in local gift shops and bookstores.

You can visit the site. I did. It is along the Blue Ridge Parkway with parking at Punchbowl Mountain Overlook. The trail is 2.0 miles, a rugged and strenuous uphill mountain hike on the way up. If you go, take a short side trip to Punchbowl Shelter. A sign will lead you there. This is one of the places the little ghost is seen.

A Legend of Pirate Alley

Today’s story is a legend of Pirate Alley in New Orleans—Reginald Hicks. Many, many years ago, a beautiful French Creole girl and a young pirate fell madly and deeply in love. What could possibly go wrong with that situation? Obviously something, because nowadays one returns to lament the other’s death.

You can find this story in my book Ghost Stories and Folk Tales of New Orleans (https://amazon.com/Ghost-Stories-Folk-Tales-Orleans/dp/1940087465)  sold on Amazon and in bookstores.

Dancing Octoroon Mistress of New Orleans

Today’s tale is Dancing Octoroon Mistress of New Orleans. On windy and cold December nights, a bare, wraithlike form gyrates and whips about frantically on top of a brick building on Royal Street. Its story comes from long ago and centers around the ill-fated devotion of a young mistress for her callous lover.

The house of the octoroon mistress is 734 Royal Street in New Orleans.

You can find my book series on Amazon and in local bookstores, including this bit of lore that comes from my book Ghost Stories and Folk Tales of New Orleans that has addresses/GPS so you can see the haunted homes, streets, and other locations. https://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Stories-Folk.../dp/1940087465 which also has a ghostly walking tour map of the city, the most beloved legends and ghost stories, and information about the haunted cemeteries.

Betty Knox, Her Ox, and the Calling Ghost

Today’s story is Betty Knox and the Calling Ghost.  When a reclusive farmer disappeared in the late 1700s, travelers on the isolated trails where she once drove her old ox heard strange noises and calls in a certain deep pocket of woods along Dunbar Creek. And I heard them too-

You can find this story in my Pennsylvania book series on Amazon and in bookstores— Pennsylvania Ghosts and Haunts: West Pennsylvania

You can take your chances and search out this legend. Betty Knox (Knocks) Road is in Pennsylvania State Gamelands Number 51. I parked on Betty Knocks Road about 600 feet from where it intersects with Tucker Run Road and crosses Dunbar Creek. Then I hiked from there. . .
