Episode #45 Guest: Dr. Stuart McGill - Why Biomechanics Still Matter, Being Precise In Your Language, Researching Pain During Sexual Positions, And The Importance Of Treating Humans With Compassion

In this episode, we had the honour of having a long conversation with world-renowned researcher and professor Dr. Stuart McGill. Dr. McGill is a professor emeritus, University of Waterloo, where he was a professor for 30 years. His laboratory and experimental research clinic investigated issues related to the causal mechanisms of back pain, how to rehabilitate back-pained people and enhance both injury resilience and performance. His advice is often sought by governments, corporations, legal experts, medical groups and elite athletes and teams from around the world.

We asked him many questions about the biopsychosocial model of pain, chopping firewood and drinking beer, the frustrations of being misrepresented and his words being taken out of context, why he has distanced himself from social media, how he got into his current research of studying pain during certain sexual positions, why treating people with compassion is important, why "degenerative disk disease" isn't a useful term, how the communication of a diagnosis can be harmful to a patient, how he has learned to manage situations where he has failed a patient, the importance of understanding the psycho-social factors of pain, why a strong back isn't necessarily a pain-free back, why the Big 3 isn't for everyone, the importance of being precise in your language when communicating, whether imaging is useless for diagnosing pain, his own exercise routine, how a psycho-social "diagnosis" can be used as a cop-out by some clinicians, and being damn good human.

We appreciate your feedback as always! Rate, review, shares, and comments all help us grow the show. Thanks for listening!

This episode is all about counting calories and why it should never be the first choice for gen pop individuals who want to lose weight. Jacob makes the argument for habit-based weight loss strategies and how to implement those habits into your lifestyle or your clients'. He makes the case for counting calories being a form of disordered eating, how to develop mindfulness and awareness around hunger cues, why building habits is better than counting calories for achieving longterm weight loss success, how to leverage motivational interviewing techniques when consulting with a weight loss client, why our words matter when it comes to discussing a weight loss plan, signs of disordered eating and what to do to support a healthy relationship with food, examples of normal eating behaviours and a HUGE announcement!

Episode #19 (feat. Tyler Morrow) - Food Quality vs Food Quantity, Should Everyone Eat Breakfast, Training To Failure For Hypertrophy, And The Importance Of Managing Training Fatigue

This is Tyler Morrow's second appearance on the show and his FIRST appearance as an official MSHC team member!

This episode is what we dubbed "The RandomCast" since it's basically just Tyler Paterson bringing up random topics that he explored on his own over the last week, and we all gave our two cents and rambled unimpeded on said topics. We talked about a heart surgeon who blames the gut-microbiome for people not being able to lose weight, food quality vs food quantity, the importance of understanding training stress and how to manage fatigue appropriately for your goal, how to train effectively if hypertrophy is the goal, motivation effecting performance and adherence, famous quotes from MLK Jr and Ghandi, the difference between "the butterfly effect" and "the ripple effect", and our upcoming projects.
