15. 'Too smart' to have an eating disorder with Dr Elysa Roberts
This week I’m joined by the wonderful Dr Elysa Roberts who has been featured in the recent Butterfly Foundation campaign, an eating disorder looks like me. This is such a crucial and important campaign, highlighting the voices of people who don’t fit the harmful eating disorder stereotype. That stereotype is a leading reason why so many people find accessing treatment difficult, if not impossible.
In a survey conducted by Butterfly, they found that 57% of Australians believe that eating disorders mostlly affect young girls . There is also an enduring belief that they are something we grow out of or can be too smart for. Elysa felt unable to put her hand up for help for decades for precisely these reasons.
In our chat today, we discuss how Elysa developed an eating disorder, why it continued and the very real shame so many feel when reaching out for support.
