Steph Catley is a highly accomplished Australian professional football player renowned for her defensive prowess and considered one of the best left-backs in the world. Playing club football for Arsenal in the FA Women's Super League and has 122 caps for the Matildas Australia national team.
Catley's impressive career includes stints with Melbourne Victory, Portland Thorns FC, Orlando Pride, and Reign FC in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), as well as Melbourne City in the A-League Women competition in Australia. Throughout her career, she has garnered several accolades, including the PFA Women's Player of the Year in 2020, the W-League's Young Player of the Year for the 2012–13 season, and the Female U20 Footballer of the Year by Football Federation Australia in 2012 and 2013.
Relax, It's a Friendly (Cap:176: Ashley Brown)
Ash Brown, Matildas cap 176, began her journey began in 2012 when she debuted for the Australian national team, earning six caps and showcasing her talent on the international stage. Brown's club career, notably with Melbourne Victory from 2010 to 2014, comprised 25 appearances .
The pinnacle of her early career came in the 2011/12 season when Brown clinched the prestigious Westfield W-League Young Player of the Season award, a testament to her outstanding abilities. However, adversity struck in the 2012–13 season with a season-ending ACL injury, a setback that showcased her resilience. Despite a valiant return in the 2013–14 season, fate dealt another blow with a reoccurrence of her ACL injury, prematurely ending her campaign.
Cannon Ball (Cap 175: Caitlin Foord)
Caitlin Foord, born on November 11, 1994, is a highly accomplished Australian professional football player renowned for her exceptional skills and achievements on the field. Hailing from Shellharbour, New South Wales, Foord began her football journey at the grassroots level with the Warilla Wanderers, showcasing prodigious talent from a young age. In 2011, she marked her debut with the Matildas, the Australian national women's football team, making a significant impact on the world stage.
Foord's breakthrough moment came at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, where, at the age of 16, she became the youngest Australian to participate in the prestigious tournament. Not only did she impress with her dynamic style of play, but she also earned accolades as the Best Women's Young Player of the tournament. This remarkable achievement was complemented by her recognition as the Asian Women's Young Footballer of the Year and the Football Federation Australia's U20 Women's Footballer of the Year in the same year. Foord's consistently stellar performances led to further acclaim, and in 2016, she was honoured as the Asian Women's Footballer of the Year by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Currently, she plays as a forward for the FA Women's Super League club Arsenal, solidifying her status as one of Australia's football icons.
Let Her Cook (Cap 174: Catherine Cannuli)
Catherine Cannuli made her debut on the national stage in 2011, Born with a passion for the game, Cannuli's journey began at the grassroots level with the Marconi Stallions, where her innate talent as a forward quickly became apparent.
During her prolific career, Cannuli showcased her goal-scoring prowess in various clubs across Australia. She started with the NSW Sapphires from 2000 to 2004, amassing an impressive 35 appearances and netting 18 goals. Her stint at Sydney FC from 2009 to 2011 saw her make 22 appearances, contributing three goals to the team. The 2011-2012 season saw her don the Brisbane Roar jersey, making 11 appearances and continuing to make a significant impact.
A move to the Western Sydney Wanderers from 2012 to 2014 marked a prolific phase in Cannuli's career. Playing 22 games and finding the back of the net eight times, she solidified her reputation as a forward with finesse and a scoring instinct.
At the conclusion of her playing career, Cannuli transitioned to coaching. In the 2021-22 season, Cannuli was the head coach for the Wanderers, further solidifying her position as a respected leader in women's football.
Beyond the pitch, Cannuli has become a familiar voice in the football community. Her insightful commentary graces Paramount+ coverage of A-League Women, providing fans with expert analysis and a unique perspective garnered from years of on-field experience. Additionally, she has taken on the role of Technical Director for Southern Districts SFA and leads the women's program at SD Raiders, showcasing her dedication to the development of football at all levels.
Hat Trick Holly (Cap 173: Teigen Allen)
Teigen Allen made her debut for the Matildas in 2010, showcasing her defensive prowess on the international stage until her last international game in 2019. Beginning her football journey with the Lakemba Lions and later the Emu Plains grassroots clubs, Allen's talent quickly propelled her to the top echelons of the sport.
During her football career, Allen participated in two World Cups (2011 and 2019) and two Asian Cups (2010 and 2014), contributing to the Matildas' success with 40 international appearances. Her versatility as a defender was further evident in the domestic arena, where she accumulated 142 A-League Women appearances, netting a goal in the process. Allen's impactful presence graced several clubs, including Sydney FC (58 appearances), Western Sydney Wanderers (29 appearances, 1 goal), Melbourne Victory (21 appearances), Melbourne City (19 appearances), and most recently, the Newcastle Jets (15 appearances in the 2022-23 season).
PODCAST: Alex Kid-iac (Cap 172: Emily van Egmond)
Emily Louise van Egmond (born 12 July 1993) is an Australian professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder for San Diego Wave FC and the Matildas.
Van Egmond began playing football at the age of five in her hometown of Newcastle, Australia. She is the daughter of former Socceroo and Newcastle United Jets A-League coach, Gary van Egmond. She made her professional debut for Canberra United in the W-League in 2009 at the age of 16.
Van Egmond has since played for a number of clubs around the world, including Western Sydney Wanderers, Newcastle Jets, Melbourne City, 1. FFC Frankfurt, VfL Wolfsburg, Fortuna Hjørring, Chicago Red Stars, Orlando Pride, and West Ham United. She joined San Diego Wave FC in the National Women's Soccer League in 2023.
Van Egmond has also had a successful international career, making her debut for the Matildas in 2010. She has since represented Australia at four FIFA Women's World Cups (2011, 2015, 2019, 2023), as well as two Olympic Games (2016 and 2020). She has scored 31 goals in 138 appearances for the Matildas.
Matildas Mania (Cap 171: Laura Brock (Alleway))
Laura Brock debuted for the Matildas in 2010 and played until 2021, finishing with 65 appearances and two goals.
As a central defender, Brock represented Australia at the 2011 and 2015 Women's World Cups and was selected for the 2019 edition before withdrawing due to a foot injury.
Brock also played internationally for Notts County (2012), Orlando Pride (2016/17) and EA Guingamp (2020/21)
Frozen Oranges (Cap 170: Michelle Heyman)
Michelle Heyman (Cap 170) is a celebrated Australian footballer who has left an indelible mark on the international stage.
Heyman made her debut for the Matildas in 2010, and her dedication and talent ensured her a place on the national team until 2018. Her journey from grassroots football to international stardom began at the Warilla Wanderers, where her passion for the sport first ignited.
Known for her prowess as a forward, Heyman's impressive career boasts 61 appearances for the Matildas, during which she netted an impressive 20 goals. Her contributions on the field have not only entertained fans but also inspired the next generation of female players.
Michelle Heyman's legacy extends beyond the statistics, as her commitment to supporting LGBTIQA+ rights and visibility and her unwavering dedication have made her a role model for aspiring footballers and a source of national pride in Australia.
