Episode 166 - Obsidian Mind

Obsidian Mind is a metalcore band based in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was four years ago when guitarist, Jacob Daugherty started writing and brainstorming for the new project he had in mind. After a few years of hard work, through proving times and while searching for the right lineup, a foundation was finally achieved. Jacob has since moved from guitar to lead vocals, alongside Obsidian Mind's other members Stephen Dunham(guitar), John Schneider(bass), and Jordan Vidas(drums/vocals).

The band's personal music interests greatly vary between artists like August Burns Red, Jinjer, Silent Planet, Erra, Periphery, Suicide Silence, Northlane, Panic at the Disco, Rush, and Morris Day and the Time. As for influences in their writing, Obsidian Mind's goal is to combine some of their favorite styles of metalcore into a perfect blend of heavy, rhythmic, and melodic sounds. When it comes to the meaning of their music, it is easy for listeners to feel a multitude of emotions. The songs are exciting, dark, and beautiful all at once, with a bigger picture beyond the lyrics. That bigger picture is the inherent connection between people, as many of us are all the same, we go through hardships, but none of us have to do it alone. Obsidian Mind hopes to connect and build a relationship with their audience through their art, with the hopes of having a positive impact on people, no matter how big or small.

Episode 162 - Cash Crawford

Episode 162 - Cash Crawford

For over 20 years, Cash Crawford has been involved in the music industry as a noteworthy vocalist, songwriter, and entertainer. Growing up in a rural area of Pritchard, Canada, Cash and her sister Sadie would sing every chance they got, even if it was walking down their driveway to the bus, or going to church on Sunday. In 2008, Cash participated in Canadian Idol, making it to the third round just before being televised. After Canadian Idol, Cash went on to travel across Canada performing as one half of the duo ‘Beyond the Mountain’ with Theo Tams. This project won her the Toronto Independent Music Awards for Singer/Songwriter of the Year in 2012. During this time, Cash also worked as a voice actor and wrote solo music. Her original projects have earned her Rising Star, Female Vocalist of the Year, and Song of the Year nominations. Since moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 2016, she continues to hone her skills both on and off the stage. In 2019, Cash released “Stevie”, her single written about her idol Stevie Nicks, with David Tolliver. Most recently, she has been working with producer Don Miggs in Nashville, TN. If you're looking for powerhouse vocals, Cash is your woman! Despite her ability to emulate the likenesses of softer vocalists such as Patsy Cline, Stevie Nicks, Ellie Goulding, and Taylor Swift, Cash excels at recording strong vocals in the style of Adele, Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, and Carrie Underwood.

Episode 157 - Promises Unsaid

Episode 157 - Promises Unsaid

Metalcore outfit reigning from the small city of Binghamton, New York. Promises Unsaid, originally formed by vocalist Caleb (Unsaid) Reynolds, hit their local scene with a sound straight from the heart strings. Covering topics such as anxiety, depression, self-doubt, suicidal thoughts, addiction, abandonment, and many more difficult to speak subjects, Promises continues to conjure feelings of relief. With a wide spectrum of strong emotional lyrics, powerful catchy choruses, groovy riffs, and beat down drums, Promises will keep you interested and leave your heart’s ear craving for more.

Their new single "Mind Play" incorporates the band's many influences to create a groovy track with poignant lyrics. It was recorded over at Pasquarella Recordings (Saving Vice, Currents, If I Were You). Touching on the subject of doubting yourself and your own mind, "Mind Play" is for those who need that uplifting message that they aren't alone in their struggles.

If there is anything that Reynolds wants listeners to take away from the track it's that "You're not alone, other people out there feel the same as you do, and if we can wake up every day and make it through the day with the same thoughts and same demons and still get through each day, then absolutely you can do the same."

This single comes as a follow-up to the band's debut LP Growing Pains which was released late last year.  The band was founded in 2016 by Reynolds and hails out of Binghamton, NY. They take influences from bands like Eskimo Callboy, Falling In Reverse, etc., bands that aren't afraid to explore different sounds within their music. The band aims to hit the heartstrings with their emotional lyrics while also offering groovy guitar riffs and catchy choruses.

Episode 150 - Haunter

Episode 150 - Haunter

Some former emo kids & one metalhead started a pop band. Enoma Asowata (guitars/synths) had met producer/songwriter Tyler Smyth (Lights, I Prevail, Falling In Reverse) as so many musicians in the pop world of today do - while pursuing DIY projects during the Warped Tour era. The duo clicked musically, and after several months of talks, Enoma sent Tyler some rough  demos of songs he had written. The idea behind all this was to do something different, challenging, and brutally honest.

Vocalist/tattoo artist/chef/model Lucy LeNoir was added to the group later in the year, with bassist Mark Schroeder joining soon after, and the addition of Mike Ray (guitar / keys)  solidified the group’s musical dynamic. Writing and recording their debut single with Smyth (now a 2X Grammy nominated producer) at his LA studio, the band found that their “sound”  stemmed directly from their collective belief that music is akin to love and its ability to connect  and heal people through shared experience.

HAUNTER pulls sonically from alt-pop and mainstream luminaries like Chvrches, Ellie Goulding, Taylor Swift, Lights, PVRIS, Imagine Dragons, and CXLOE, while showcasing occasional appreciation for the guitar driven Emo/Pop Rock groups like Jimmy Eat World and  The Maine. The group is dedicated to creating substantial, thoughtful, uncompromising Pop Music.

Episode 146 - Billy Butka of Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch is a fresh and hard-hitting band with old ties to both the New Jersey and Philly DIY punk scenes. Garnering influences from Taking Back Sunday, The Story So Far, Coheed and Cambria, and Thrice, this band bridges the gap between the early 2000s emocore wave of bands, and the current movement of emo and pop punk. Sucker Punch aims to take a strong focus on personal and self reflective lyrical content, framed within upbeat and catchy riffs and melodies. Within months of starting as a solo project, the band now consists of lifelong friends who all share the same passion for both alternative music and culture. Episode 139 - Cody Frain of The Difference Between

Ever since their respective bands toured together in 2017, guitarist Chris Wethington (of Softspoken) and drummer Cody Frain (of A Scent Like Wolves) entertained the idea of writing together in a new project. Four years later, after touring across the world, racking up millions of streams, and releasing Billboard charting albums separately, their ideas and talents have come together to create the perfect blend of progressive metalcore grooves and beautifully dissonant melodies.

Giving a voice to the music is Chris Roberts - the original vocalist of (formerly) post-hardcore band Emarosa (then also known as Corsets are Cages). Roberts played a large part in writing the first versions of most of the songs that would end up on Emarosa's breakout EP "This is Your Way Out", but parted ways with the band to see success in two other regional acts (The Revival Sound, Take Me Home) before taking a break from performing. Having shared the stage with Roberts while in his first band (Thwomp in the House of Boo), Wethington knew that Roberts' voice and vocal style was the perfect fit, and it turned out that after a long break to collect himself and refocus, Roberts, too, was ready.

To round out the lineup, Wethington brought in Garrett Harper, whom he played alongside not

only in Softspoken, but also in their mutual first band, Thwomp.

Episode 138 - Sam Ma of southstate.

Texas alternative pop act southstate is out to correct the misconception that the Southern states are without culture and diversity. Led by the multiracial, multicultural Sam Ma, southstate was initially conceived to make music for those who felt out of place and didn't fit perfectly into any of the boxes they are supposed to occupy.

Musically, southstate takes a dexterous approach to its art; nods to bedroom pop acts the likes of blackbear and Jeremy Zucker; emo titans such as Fall Out Boy and Grayscale as well as Asian acts Keshi and Joji.

Having garnered support from regional touring, southstate has also picked up national tastemaker support, with Spotify's The Scene and New Punk Tracks playlists, as well as Loudwire and Punknews showing early support.

New single "idwda" sees Ma partner with Broadside frontman Oliver Baxxter, to deliver another slice of emo glazed pop.

Episode 135 - Clint Woolsey of Stone Senate

Episode 135 - Clint Woolsey of Stone Senate

Stone Senate has been called “a heavier version of Lynyrd Skynyrd, crossed with The Allman Brothers Band”. While being mentioned in such heady company is flattering, one thing Stone Senate is most definitely not, is a retro act. They are taking what came naturally from their collective influences a step further.

Fronted by lead vocalist/guitarist Clint Woolsey’s smoldering, soulful vocals and unmistakable stage presence, stage left and stage right are burning with dual lead guitars of James Edwards and Ted Hennington. Add to these the blood bonded rhythm section of “The Mud Brothers”- Paul Zettler on bass/vocals and David Zettler on drums/vocals and you have caught lightning in a bottle.

When thinking about the upcoming release, lead singer Clint Woolsey says,

“The album “Between the Dark and the Light” covers the entire spectrum of way up high, to the lowest lows. This feels like the best album we (Stone Senate) have done, and was written by all 5 band members (James Edwards, Paul Zettler, David Zettler, Ted Hennington, and Clinton Woosley), as well as our buddy and producer, Toby Wright. The first EP, “Dusk”, was the first batch of songs we had, and has some tasty southern rockin’ guitar licks, dark grooves, and will definitely take the listener on a picturesque ride. It rocks you up, mellows you down, and ends with an epic 6 minute song featuring a dueling guitar solo.”

And he’s right, the guitar solo achieves a legendary status. The skill level is only that of rock star esteem and is guaranteed to have the crowds cheering “encore” for each and every new song they can hear.

Episode 134 - PURE

Two-piece experimental rock band Pure has been making waves in their local music scene and beyond. The band, which hails out of Las Vegas, NV has accumulated over 300,000 YouTube views on their music videos. Their single "Daze Off" premiered over at Lambgoat and earned them a feature in Outburn Magazine. Following up on their last single "Search For Home", the band is set to release their new track "Still You"  on October 8th which features Landon Hill from the band Sigil on vocals.

The band was founded by vocalist Chase Long and drummer Shane Hansen in 2017. After having cycled through lineup changes the band settled on having it remain a 2 member band in 2019. The band takes inspiration for their sound from artists that aren't confined by the boundaries of genres such as Linkin Park, Ocean Grove, and Bring Me The Horizon. With every release, the band wants to continuously open the door for their sound to go wherever their minds can take it.

Long has the following to say about the meaning of "Still You": “The track is basically a song about me wanting someone that can’t make up their mind. I’ve had people give me the run around in the past because they wanted my love but didn’t fully want to reciprocate it. This song is basically about feeling like you’re the right person for someone but being overlooked, & eventually cutting off contact with that person because so.”

Episode 132 - Kelly Barber of Wave Break

Episode 132 - Kelly Barber of Wave Break

WAVE BREAK’s history is long and complicated, but there is one thing that has always been the same: frontwoman Kelly Barber has always been the driving force. After a series of lineup changes, she found herself as the only one in the band. Instead of calling it quits, this time she decided to continue on her own.

2018’s debut EP Armory introduced the band with a fierce, lively sound that spread messages of strength and vitality. They quickly found support from outlets such as idobi Radio and New Noise Magazine, and went on to tour the northeast US. They also performed alongside various bands and artists such as Boys of Fall (InVogue Records), Nick Thomas (The Spill Canvas), Secrets (Made In The Shade Records), and Kulick (RCA Records) to name a few.

Throughout 2020, Barber was hard at work on Wave Break’s followup EP, due out in fall 2021. The record blends elements of bands and artists such as Avril Lavigne, Acceptance and Rise Against to form a unique brand of melodic alternative rock; utilizing punchy instrumentation, dynamic vocals and melancholic lyrics. It explores the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people and situations, and the impact on mental health as you’re finding them.

Barber, having named the band after overcoming adversity, is fiercely adamant about carrying that torch. Wave Break was built with a fire that cannot be extinguished, and it’s burning brighter than ever before. Her goal is to inspire others to take their lives by the reigns and to push through whatever obstacles lay ahead; nay, break them. All she needs is time.

Episode 130 - This Summer

Episode 130 - This Summer

Emo alternative band This Summer have released their new single "The Rabbit Hole," available on all digital platforms NOW. “The Rabbit Hole” leads off their upcoming debut album (more info TBA), and introduces their new music in an emotionally captivating light. According to the band, "The Rabbit Hole" is a reflection of coping with PTSD, specifically living with a loved one with substance abuse issues. The lyrics depict a scene of watching someone slowly deteriorate as your tolerance for their reckless decisions grows thin, as well as coping with the loss of said loved one due to their dependency. A fresh take on their revamped, modern rock sound, "The Rabbit Hole" finds This Summer in their most genuine state - gripping, open, and incredibly bold.

In need of a reset, This Summer swapped their nostalgic hard rock sound in early 2020 for an angstier, feisty, modern clash of driving melodies and emotionally gripping vocals. The band has not been shy about bringing deep and emotionally enriching lyrics to the modern rock scene. Looking to destigmatize the issues of depression, abuse, regret and longing, This Summer brings these human emotions to the forefront of their lyricism in hopes of connecting with listeners on an engaging level.

Unable to access a studio, the band’s current lineup initially spent the start of the COVID-19 pandemic recording, completing an EP in just 2 months. Their new tracks placed emphasis on retaining the cozy feeling of nostalgia and implementing soft colors into their branding. Their new single “The Rabbit Hole,” released on August 27th, is filled with dark emo flavors, accentuating the band’s ability to evolve past nostalgia. A fresh take on Midwestern rock, This Summer is always expanding.

Episode 128 - JON CAR

Episode 128 - JON CAR

Having started playing music at the early age of 4, self-taught vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jon Car has developed into a potent alternative rock act, led by an unforgettable vocal.

Episode 125 - Tierney Tough

Episode 125 - Tierney Tough

Tierney Tough is a ubiquitous presence in her native scene of Orlando, FL. At any given time, you can find her fronting beloved indie rock outfit The Pauses, organizing shows and festivals, or out on the road as a musician in the indie and punk tour circuit. Today, Tierney shares her first solo contribution to the music world, A Farce To Reckon With. The three-song EP was written completely by (and for) herself, influenced by artists like Fiona Apple, Built To Spill, Cat Power, and Blonde Redhead. Fittingly, her first solo effort elbowed its way into existence during a pandemic that forced us all into isolation and serves as a space for her signature voice and songwriting style to fully manifest and conjure its own spell.

The three diverse tracks that comprise A Farce To Reckon With are drenched in an array of pianos, synths, and organic tones that all provide a perfect framework for Tierney’s powerful voice. Single “Apartment 54” is a piano-driven earworm that taps into Tierney’s imagination of turning her living room into a homemade discotheque during quarantine, while “Tired Swing” reels you in with its alluring melodies and unique percussion. A vibrant reimagining of “Friends of Mine” by the Zombies, featuring Patrick Newbery (Cursive) and Shawn Alpay (Laura Stevenson, How To Dress Well), wraps up the EP on a high note. Tierney collaborated with the inimitable Jim Dreffen to co-produce and J. Robbins (Jawbox) to mix the release.

Episode 120 - Kali Masi

Episode 120 - Kali Masi

Kali Masi have never been a band to hold anything back, and the four-piece stays true to this promise on the new LP. From start to finish, [laughs] is cutting, crucial and honest, with poetic recollections and curses of the past juxtaposed by contemplative acceptance of self in the present. On the new record, the band explores and dissects elements of strained friendships that often go unspoken, sometimes to the point of abandonment beyond repair.

The seconds between tracks will leave you guessing whether to rest or revel, and no matter which you get, you’re always taken by pleasant surprise.
