Interview w/ Coach Randy Phillips (Assistant Coach/Director of Recruiting at UNCG)

Coach Randy Phillips shares his journey from growing up in Jackson, Mississippi to playing basketball at the professional level, and now coaching NCAA Division I basketball at UNCG.

He started off his college career at East Central Community College before transferring to Radford where he played for Coach Mike Jones. Phillips and future NBA player Carlik Jones went on to win the 2018 Big South Conference Tournament and won their First Four game in Dayton.

After graduating from Radford he played professionally in Canada, France, and Switzerland. In 2021 he retired from playing professionally and joined the UNCG coaching staff working under Coach Jones. **Sponsored by FastModel**

Interview w/ Coach Ethan Kahn (Assistant Coach at Bemidji State University)

Coach Ethan Kahn shares his journey from growing up in Arizona to becoming a Student Assistant at the NCAA DI level, and eventually becoming an Assistant Coach at Bemidji State University (NCAA DII).

Kahn served as a Student Assistant at Northern Arizona from 2017 until 2021 and moved across the country to become a Graduate Assistant in North Carolina at Catawba College. He served as the Director of Basketball Operations and Video Coordinator in addition to being in graduate school.

Coach Kahn helped with all aspects of the program at Catawba and during the 2022-23 season he served as the Head Developmental Coach for the Red team.

In 2023 he was named an Assistant Coach at Bemidji State University in Minnesota.

Coach Jarren "JD" Dyson shares his journey from being a DIII student athlete at Emory & Henry (now NCAA DII) to becoming a D1 Assistant Coach

Dyson served under Coach John Krikorian at Christopher Newport University and helped lead the CNU to back-to-back conference championships and a run to the program's first-ever Final Four appearance in 2016.

Following a 99-19 record and three conference championships during his time at CNU, Coach Dyson landed an Assistant Coach position at Lafayette College - he went on to spend five seasons at Lafayette under the legendary Coach Fran O'Hanlon.

After Lafayette he returned to Christopher Newport for one season - and helped them win the NCAA DIII National Championship. Following that feat he returned to the Patriot League to be an Assistant Coach at Army on first year Head Coach Kevin Kuwik's inaugural coaching staff.

Interview w/ Coach Steven Asher (Assistant Coach at Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne)

Coach Steven Asher shares his journey from growing up in Maryland and playing Club Basketball at JMU, to becoming a NCAA DI women's basketball coach at Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne.

After graduating from James Madison University he accepted a Graduate Assistant position at the University of Maryland under Coach Mark Turgeon. While at Maryland he was a part of a program that advanced to the Semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament and the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament.

Coach Asher accepted an Assistant Coach position at Lycoming College (NCAA DIII) and helped them win their conference tournament and advance to the NCAA DIII Tournament. From Lycoming he moved onto Catawba College where he served as an Assistant Coach for Coach Rob Perron. While on staff at Catawba, they advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both 2019 and 2020 while winning the South Atlantic Conference in 2020.

Following a successful at Catawba, Coach Asher joined the women's coaching staff at Rice University and aided them to a Women's National Invitational Tournament Championship. Rice finished with a 23-4 record including a 12-2 Conference USA record.

In 2021 Coach Asher joined the coaching staff at Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne.

Coach Soloman "Sol" Zurier shares his journey from growing up in Maryland to becoming the Director of Basketball Operations at USC Upstate.

He attended West Virginia University and started the WVU Men's Club Basketball program that he served as the Head Coach for as well as serving as an Assistant Coach with Morgantown HS. Coach Zurier also interned with the WVU Strength & Conditioning department during his time at West Virginia.

In 2014 he joined the staff at St. Mary’s College of Maryland as an Assistant Coach and remained there until 2019 when he moved onto International Sports Academy (ISA) in Willoughby, Ohio as both an Assistant and Head Coach for their boy's varsity basketball teams.

Coach Zurier accepted the Assistant Director of Basketball Operations role at USC Upstate and after one season Head Coach Dave Dickerson promoted him to their Director of Basketball Operations. He enters his third season in Spartanburg this season.

Coach Keith Oddo shares his journey from growing up in Roanoke, Virginia to becoming an Assistant Coach at IUPUI.

Oddo accepted a Preferred Walk On spot at Richmond where he played for Coach Chris Mooney, during his senior year he earned an athletic scholarship. He graduate transferred to Louisville where he was a Preferred Walk On for Chris Mack's Cardinals team for the 2019-2020 season. He was part of a Louisville Cardinals team that was ranked #1 team in the nation and finished with a 24-7 record prior to COVID ending their NCAA Tournament-bound season.

After exhausting his playing eligibility, he accepted a Graduate Assistant position at Akron under Coach John Groce, and the following season he worked for the Brooklyn Nets as a NBA Summer League Team Assistant. Following that experience he accepted an Assistant Coach position at Bridgewater College and spent the next two seasons. In addition to his coaching responsibilities at Bridgewater, Coach Oddo became the General Manager and Head Coach of the Louisville alumni team in The Basketball Tournament (TBT).

In August he was hired as an Assistant Coach at IUPUI under Coach Matt Crenshaw

Coach Riley Welch shares his journey from playing NCAA DIII basketball for the University of Mary Washington to becoming a Graduate Assistant at Lynchburg.

After being a standout for West Springfield High School, Welch attended the University of Mary Washington and was one of the most prolific three point shooters in program history. He elected to remain in college for his 5th season of eligibility since he did not have a season in 2020-21 due to the COVID pandemic.

Coach Welch is entering his 2nd season as a Graduate Assistant for Coach Hillary Scott and the Hornets of Lynchburg University.

Joe Cristy shares his journey from growing up in Baltimore to becoming the new Public Address Announcer for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. He played baseball at High Point and was a member of the Panthers during their transition from NAIA to D2, and ultimately to D1. He began working High Point’s women’s basketball games, and quickly became the voice of the High Point Panthers athletics. Joe worked for nearly twenty years as the PA Announcer for High Point as well as working such events as the the 2019 NCAA Men's Soccer College Cup, the 2022 ACC Men's & Women's Soccer Championships, the 2023 New York Life ACC Men's Basketball Tournament, and many more tournaments. Recently he was named Public Address Announcer for Wake Forest University Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball and Volleyball.

Coach Jason Allison shares his journey from growing up in Lincolnton, North Carolina to becoming a NCAA D1 men's basketball coach.

He was a student-athlete at Liberty University and began his coaching career at Lynchburg Christian Academy. Coach Allison went onto coach at Lees-McRae College, Gaston Day School, and King College prior to joining the coaching staff at VMI.

Allison spent nine seasons in Lexington working under Coach Duggar Baucom as the Associate Coach/Recruiting Coordinator. During his tenure at VMI, he helped lead the Keydets to three appearances in the Big South Tournament title game and to the semifinals of the 2014 CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Known for their high-octane offense, VMI led the nation in scoring six times. The Keydets eclipsed the 20-win plateau twice in Allison’s nine seasons with the program, a feat that VMI achieved just three times in the 97 years prior.

Coach Jim Fox hired him to be on his coaching staff at Appalachian State and spent his first four seasons as App State as an Assistant Coach, before being promoted to Associate Head Coach for the 2018-19 season. After Dustin Kerns was named the new Head Coach, Allison remained on staff as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach in 2019-20. In 2020 Coach Allison took over the men's golf program at App State and had great success.

This past June he was named the Chief of Staff for Men's Basketball at Drexel under Coach Zach Spiker.

Coach Evan Manning shares his journey from growing up the Kansas to being on staff in the ACC, to now working under Mark Few at Gonzaga.
After being a walk-on at Kansas and winning four Big XII regular season titles, two Big XII tournament championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances (including the Elite Eight during his senior season) he briefly coached youth basketball before joining his father's coaching staff at Wake Forest.
Evan shares what it was like to try and tune out negativity at Wake Forest while they didn't meet the standards of some fans. He doesn't hide the fact that Danny Manning is his dad, but he's making a name for himself in the coaching ranks.

Coach Bob Gallager shares his journey from growing up in Elbridge, New York to becoming an Assistant Coach at Bowling Green [State University].

He attended St. Bonaventure and after his sophomore year he served as a Student Manager under Coach Mark Schmidt. After graduating from St. Bonaventure, he remained in Olean as a Graduate Assistant for the Bonnies. Coach Gallager accepted an Assistant Coach position under Coach Chad Myers at Massanutten Military Academy in Virginia. He helped the Post Graduate team go 32-3 including an appearance at the National Prep Tournament Final Four, the team had a number of Division I players including future NBA player Dereon Seabron (New Orleans Pelicans).

Gallager reunited with Coach Chad Myers at IMG Academy where he again served as his Assistant Coach, the following season he landed a Special Assistant position at Southern Utah under Coach Todd Simon. The Thunderbirds went 24-13, including an appearance in the CBI Semifinals. Simon was named the Head Coach at Bowling Green and hired him to serve as an Assistant Coach for the Falcons.

Coach Dwight Perry shares his journey from growing up in Durham North Carolina to becoming a walk-on at the University of Kentucky - and now the Head Coach at Wofford College.

Perry walked-on for Coach Tubby Smith at the University of Kentucky and following his graduation from Kentucky he went on to intern with the Stanford University Men's Basketball Team under Coach Johnny Dawkins. Following his time in Palo Alto he accepted a Graduate Assistant position at VCU under Coach Shaka Smart. After earning his Master's Degree from VCU he remained on staff as the Video Coordinator for one season before accepting an Assistant Coach position at Furman under Coach Niko Medved.

After a nice run at Furman under both Coach Niko Medved and Coach Bob Richey - including back-to-back CIT appearances, he moved to Spartanburg to become an Assistant Coach at Wofford College. He was a part of a Wofford program that won games at North Carolina and Georgia during his first few seasons on staff. Coach Perry was promoted to the Associate Head Coach in 2021 and in December of 2022 he was named the Interim Head Coach. During his time as the Interim Head Coach he led Wofford to a win at Texas A&M - which was their only loss at home all season, and as the six seed in the SoCon Tournament the Terriers knocked off third seeded UNCG.

Dwight Perry was named the Head Coach at Wofford College in March of 2023.

Coach CJ Lee shares his coaching journey and how his decision to transfer from a scholarship student-athlete at Manhattan College to a walk-on at Michigan has impacted his life.

Lee was a standout high school player who was a member of Manhattan's team that won the MAAC Regular Season Championship and knocked off FDU and Maryland in the NIT. When he transferred to Michigan he sat out due to the NCAA transfer rules during Coach Tommy Amaker's final season in Ann Arbor, he earned a scholarship from Coach John Beilein and was a co-captain during his senior season at Michigan.

After exhausting his NCAA eligibility he joined the coaching staff as their Administrative Specialist, and then promoted to their Director of Program Personnel. Coach Lee was a part of the coaching staff that took Michigan to multiple NCAA Tournaments including the NCAA Championship in 2013.

Mike Maker hired CJ to be an Assistant Coach on his inaugural coaching staff at Marist. Coach Lee was tasked with staying on at Marist until they hired a new Head Coach when they did not retain Coach Maker. CJ's wife accepted a position as an Assistant Professor at UNCG so he put his college coaching ambitions aside for her and accepted the Head Coach position at Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point North Carolina. He won over 40 games at WCA and when the Director of Basketball Operations job opened up at UNCG he applied and was hired in August of 2022.

Coach Jason Martinez shares his journey from growing up in Saratoga Springs New York to becoming a Strength & Conditioning Coach at the NCAA Division I level.

Martinez graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in Exercise Science, from there he went on to intern with Clemson and Penn State. After his internships he accepted a Graduate Assistant position at Lindenwood University where after two years he parlayed that into a job at Wake Forest under Coach Danny Manning. He worked under Coach Ryan Horn and was instrumental in designing a state-of-the-art athletic performance facility at Wake Forest.

East Carolina hired Coach Martinez in 2020 and he spent two seasons on Coach Joe Dooley's coaching staff as their Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach for Men's Basketball. He returned to New York when Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino hired him to his staff at Iona. Coach Martinez also assisted the women's basketball program while working at Iona.

In May of 2023 Coach Martinez was hired at North Texas to be the Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Mean Green.

Coach Bradley Fey shares his journey from growing up in Indiana to becoming the Director of Basketball Operations at App State.

After growing up in a basketball family he went on to play college basketball at DePauw under the legendary Coach Bill Fenlon. In 2016 Fey accepted a Graduate Assistant position at Jacksonville University under Tony Jasick. He spent two years in the ASUN and played a part in coaching JD Notae - who would later transfer to Arkansas and be named an All-American third team.

Shortly after accepting a JUCO coaching position he was offered the Director of Basketball Operations at Presbyterian College working under Coach Dustin Kerns. Fey was a part of a Presbyterian College Blue Hose team that won twenty games and advanced to the CIT Quarterfinals. Kerns accepted the Head Coach position at App State and brought the entire coaching staff with him.

Coach Fey has been an integral part of the Mountaineers success - which includes the third NCAA Tournament appearance in the 100+ year history of the App State men's basketball program.

Coach Cole Wakefield shares his journey from growing up in Katy Texas to becoming a Graduate Assistant at the University of Louisiana.

Cole became a Student Manager at Texas Tech during his sophomore year. He served under both Chris Beard and Mark Adams. During his time with the Red Raider they went 59-32 including a Sweet Sixteen run in 2022.

After graduating from Texas Tech in 2022 he accepted a Graduate Assistant position at the University of Louisiana under Coach Bob Marlin. In his first season in Lafayette the Ragin' Cajuns went 26-8 with a perfect 14-0 at home, and a Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship. For much of the season Louisiana was ranked in the Top 10 of the Mid Major Top 25, and for the first time in nine seasons Louisiana made the NCAA Tournament.

Coach Miles Lester shares his journey from growing up in Kansas to becoming a PWO who earned a scholarship at Rice before transferring as a PWO at Wake Forest who earned a scholarship during his senior year - and now is currently a Graduate Assistant for Coach Kelvin Sampson's Houston Cougars.

Lester moved to Wilbraham, Massachusetts in high school where he was a stand out basketball player and as a senior was named All-New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Honorable Mention. He decided to attend Rice - where he would start five of the 29 games he played in for the Owls.

After his freshman season he transferred to Wake Forest to play for Kansas legend Danny Manning. He gave up a scholarship at Rice to be a Preferred Walk-On for Wake Forest and had to sit out during the 2018-19 season due to the NCAA Transfer rules. During his time in Wake Forest he played for Coach Manning and then his final two seasons were under Coach Steve Forbes.

Miles was a Team Assistant during the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas before landing a Graduate Assistant at The University of Houston. In his first season at Houston they won both the AAC Regular Season Championship before reaching the Sweet Sixteen of the 2023 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

Coach Molly Bachand shares her journey from growing up in Fairway, Kansas to becoming a Director of Basketball Operations for a NCAA Division I men's basketball program.

She got her first experience working the Roy Williams Camp at Kansas while still in high school and eventually became a Student Manager while at Kansas under Coach Bill Self. After graduating she accepted a position at-then Big 12 member Colorado and spent one year there before returning to Kansas. Molly spent two years at the University of Kansas before accepting a Director of Equipment role at UAB in Birmingham, Alabama.

Coach Danny Manning brought her to Wake Forest as the Director of Equipment Services for both the men’s and women’s basketball programs, when the change in leadership took place in 2020 she found herself out of a job as well.

In 2021 Coach Justin Gray hired her as the Director of Basketball Operations at Western Carolina.

Coach Ashley Howard shares his journey from growing up outside of Philadelphia to eventually being the Head Coach at Drexel from 2018 until 2022.

Ashley was recruited to Drexel and played basketball until a heart condition wouldn't allow him to continue his playing career, he then transitioned into a Student Assistant. In 2004 Dr. John Giannini hired him to be an Assistant Coach on his coaching staff at La Salle.

After four seasons at La Salle he returned to Drexel working under Coach Bruiser Flint - who was the Head Coach while he was a Student Assistant at Drexel. He was part of a coaching staff that led the Dragons to consecutive 20-win seasons, including a school record 29 victories in 2011-12.

From Drexel he went onto Villanova and was an integral piece of team that was two National Championships during a span of five seasons at Villanova. Each season the team advanced to the NCAA Tournament - while also winning four Big East regular season titles and three Big East Tournament championships during his time at Villanova. All together, Villanova won an incredible 92% of their games during his five seasons there (294-24).

In 2018 he was named the Head Coach at La Salle and led the Explorers, currently he's spearheading the "Friends of Nova" NIL collective which helps provide compensation to student-athletes at Villanova.

Coach Ivan Thomas shares his journey from growing up in Norfolk, Virginia to becoming a highly successful high school basketball coach, and coaching at Providence College under Coach Ed Cooley.

Thomas graduated from Norview High School and then went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree from VCU. He moved to Illinois and served as an Assistant Coach at Schaumburg High School where he aided their state championship. Coach Thomas returned Virginia to pursue a Master's Degree from VCU. He moved to Northern Virginia and earned a second Master's Degree from George Mason University while also serving as the Head Coach at Edison High School. After having great success at Edison, he accepted the Head Coach position at TC Williams (now Alexandria City), the Titans went 75-9 during his three seasons at TC including a three-peat as District Champions - including a state championship in 2008. 

Along his coaching journey he developed a friendship with Boo Williams and helped coach with Boo Williams AAU program, when he returned to Virginia Beach to became the Head Coach at Kecoughtan High School from 2008 until 2015 while also coaching the Boo Williams 17U boy's basketball program.

In 2015 Ed Cooley hired him as the Associate Director of Player Development/Video Operations at Providence, the following season he was promoted to an Assistant Coach. He's been instrumental in their success and is highly respected within coaching circles. Last season the Friars went 27-6, including 14-3 in Big East play, won the regular season title and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen before losing by single digits to the eventual National Champion Kansas Jayhawks.

Joel Justus shares his journey from growing up in North Carolina to becoming one of the most heralded Assistant Coaches in the nation.

After growing up around college athletics, Joel went on to play college basketball at UNC Wilmington. He helped the Seahawks capture two Colonial Athletic Association titles, make three postseason appearances (NIT in 2001 and NCAA in 2002 and 2003) and was team captain his senior season in 2003-04.

Justus started his college coaching career as an assistant coach at Elon University from 2004-08, where he helped guide the Phoenix to a Northern Division title in 2006 and the Southern Conference championship game in 2008 under Coach Ernie Nestor.

Prior to the 2014-15 season he was hired by Kentucky as their Director of Analytics. UK became the first team in college basketball history to start a season 38-0, the following season he was elevated to Special Assistant to the Head Coach for the 2015-16 season. In 2016 he was again elevated - this time to an Assistant Coach. In his first season as an Assistant Coach, Kentucky won both the SEC regular-season and tournament championships while advancing to the Elite Eight. He played a key part in securing what the Recruiting Services Consensus Index calculates as the best recruiting class ever in 2017 and the No. 1 class in 2020. 

In 2017-18, Coach Justus helped UK win their fourth straight SEC tournament championship. The following season Kentucky advanced to another Elite Eight, 

Justus helped Kentucky to another Southeastern Conference regular-season title in 2020 and was a key part in what many tabbed as the best recruiting class in the country in 2020. Highlighted as one of the top young assistants in the country, The Athletic tabbed Justus one of the top 40 people in college basketball under 40 and ESPN named him one of the nation's top 40 coaches less than 40 years old in 2020.

After seven seasons in Lexington Coach Justus accepted a similar position at Arizona State under Coach Bobby Hurley. This past offseason he returned to his home state as an Assistant Coach at NC State under Coach Kevin Keatts.

Coach Will Jones shares his journey from growing up in Moncks Corner, South Carolina to being a Head Coach at the NCAA Division I level.

After playing college basketball at South Carolina State he accepted a Graduate Assistant position at Tennessee State.  After earning his Master's Degree from Tennessee State, he accepted an Assistant Coach position at Lemoyne-Owen College during the 2005-06 season. He would return to South Carolina State as an Assistant Coach, after one season his Head Coach was let go and the staff wasn't retained either.

Coach Jones joined the NJCAA ranks at what is now known as Northwest Florida State College. The program went 48-11 during his two years on staff. He accepted a Head Coach position at Motlow State but they declined it so that he could join the coaching staff at Charleston Southern.

From Charleston Southern he continued down south to Florida, to coach Jacksonville University under Cliff Warren. After Coach Warren wasn’t retained he became a first-time Head Coach at West Nassau High School, and the following season he returned to the college ranks at Florida A&M during the 2015-16 season under Bryon Samuels. In July of 2016 and joined the coaching staff at North Carolina A&T. He served under Coach Jay Joyner’s coaching staff and was instrumental in the Aggies having one of the best turnarounds in NCAA Division I history. N.C. A&T improved by 17 games from the 2016-17 to the 2017-18 season after going 20-15 overall. Coach Joyner promoted him to Associate HC prior to the 2018 season, and then in December of 2019 Coach Joyner was suspended indefinitely and he was announced as the Aggies Interim Head Coach. Coach Jones went on to be named the MEAC Coach of the Year as an Interim HC.

This past August Coach Jones and North Carolina A&T parted ways, he finished his tenure with a a 37-35 overall recording including leading the Aggies to a MEAC regular season championship during the 2020-2021 campaign.

Coach Jeff Strohm shares his journey from growing up in Marshall Illinois to becoming a highly successful men's basketball at the NCAA Division I level.

After coaching two seasons at the high school level he spent the next six seasons at Northern Illinois. From there he landed an Assistant Coach position at Utah under the legendary Coach Rick Majerus. They helped transform Utah into a nation powerhouse, in 1998 they played in the NCAA National Championship with players such as Andre Miller and Michael Doleac. Coach Strohm was instrumental in recruiting and developing Andrew Bogut. From Utah he moved back closer to his family and coached under Tom Crean at Marquette from 2002-05, he coached six players who would go onto play in the NBA - including Dwyane Wade.

He served as the Head Coach of the Vermont Frost Heaves Premier Basketball League (PBL) in 2009-10. Coach Strohm resumed his college coaching career at Tulane under Ed Conroy, he helped them win 20 and advance to the 2nd round of the CIT. In 2016 he became the Director of Basketball Operations at Loyola Marymount under Mike Dunlap and after requesting to stay at the DOBO for a season, he accepted a promotion to Assistant Coach in 2018.

This past offseason he accepted an Assistant Coach position at San Jose State under Tim Miles.

Coach Ryan Kardok shares his journey from growing up in Florida, playing JUCO then continuing his playing career at South Florida to eventually becoming the Director of Player Development for his alma mater.

Kardok played at Broward Community College before transferring to South Florida. He became a Graduate Assistant at the University of Miami from 2013 to 2015 under Naismith Coach of the Year Jim Larranaga. After completing his master's degree from the University of Miami he accepted the Video Coordinator position at Bowling Green under Coach Michael Huger. He was promoted to the Director of Basketball Operations from 2016-19 and also had a stint as Interim Assistant Head Coach from February-July 2018.

Coach Kardok served as an Assistant Coach at James Madison University from 2019-20 under Coach Louis Rowe prior to becoming the Head Coach at Parrish Community High School from 2020-22. He guided his team to a 20-8 record in 2022, marking the first 20-win season in program history. Kardok guided Parrish to back-to-back district championships for the first time in school history. He was named the District 16 4A Coach of the Year as well. He returned to his alma mater as the Director of Player Development in June of of 2022.

Coach Joshua Heyliger shares his journey from being born in Delaware, moving to New York, and eventually becoming an Assistant Coach at Davidson College.

After moving to New York at a young age he attended boarding school at The Hill School in Pennsylvania prior to attending Stonehill College, he was a four year letter winner and a member of team that reached the NCAA Division II Elite Eight during his junior season. He worked a few camps after graduating and he landed his first coaching job at The Hill School as the Head Coach of the JV team, as well as assisting with the varsity program.

Coach Heyliger became a Graduate Assistant at Dartmouth under his former college coach David McLaughlin. Following a season at Dartmouth Coach Heyliger accepted the Director of Basketball Operations position at Davidson College under the legendary Coach Bob McKillop. In four seasons at Davidson the team has gone 80-40, making two NIT appearances and a NCAA Tournament appearance this past season. He was promoted to an Assistant Coach this past May and he's helped Coach Matt McKillop with the transition from Associate Head Coach to Head Coach.

Coach Michael Fly shares his journey from growing up in Kentucky to becoming a NCAA Division I Head Coach at Florida Gulf Coast University.

He got his first coaching experience under the living legend that is Happy Osbourne at Georgetown College during his undergraduate years at the University of Kentucky. From Georgetown College he moved onto the Charlotte Bobcats (now Charlotte Hornets) and worked under Michael Jordan and alongside the likes of Dell Curry, Phil Ford, Jeff Capel, and Bernie Bickerstaff. After spending a season in the NBA ranks he moved down to Tallahassee to serve as the Video Coordinator at Florida State under another legendary coach in Leonard Hamilton.

Andy Enfield was named the Head Coach at FGCU in 2011 and Coach Fly moved to Fort Meyers to serve as one of his Assistant Coaches. As an Assistant Coach under Coach Enfield he was a part of six ASUN championship teams, including the 2013 team who reached the Sweet 16. When USC hired Coach Enfield he had the opportunity to join his coaching staff, but decided to stay and serve under newly named Head Coach, Joe Dooley.

In 2018 when Coach Dooley returned to East Carolina, Michael Fly was promoted to Head Coach at Florida Gulf Coast University and spend four years as the helm. He led the Eagles to the third most wins in program history (22) and set program records for non-conference wins, three-pointers, three-point attempts, blocks per game and total blocks. Coach Fly also coached the ASUN Newcomer and Defensive Player of the Year in 2021-2022. Prior to the TBC postseason tournament FGCU made a coaching change, but Coach Fly stayed and coached his team, leading them to the 2nd Round.

Coach Fly reunited with Coach Dennis Gates and multiple other former Leonard Hamilton disciples at Mizzou when he was named the Director of Scouting & Analytics in May of 2022.

Coach Laura Harper shares her journey from growing up in Elkins Park, PA to becoming a Head Coach at the NCAA DI level.

She led her high school team to a state championship as a freshman and then went on to lead Maryland to a NCAA National Championship in 2006 as well, she eventually was drafted eighth in the first round of the WNBA Draft and played professionally until 2013.

After her playing career ended, Harper joined the coaching ranks at Loyola Maryland (2013-2014) before moving onto High Point (2014-2016) and then returning to the DMV when she joined the coaching staff at George Washington (2016-2017). Coach Harper accepted an Assistant Coach position at Florida (2017-2019) before getting her first job as a Head Coach at Montverde Academy (2019-2020) in the Sunshine State.

Coach Harper was named the Head Coach at Coppin State in 2020 and spent two seasons at the helm, Harper and her staff flipped the program by winning 13 more games that they won in her first season under her. She was named the MEAC Coach of the Year in 2022 and on April 20, 2022 was introduced as the Head Coach at Towson.

Coach Jonas Hayes shares his journey from growing up in Atlanta and going to high school with TI to becoming a D1 Head Coach at Georgia State.

Him and his twin brother [Jarvis] attended Western Carolina during their freshman season before transferring to the University of Georgia to play for the Bulldogs in their home state. Jarvis went on to play in the NBA and Jonas began his coaching career as an Assistant Coach at Morehouse State then South Carolina State before spending the next five seasons at Belmont Abbey College.

The University of Georgia offered him a job in 2012 and he left Belmont Abbey to be on Mark Fox's coaching staff and he remained there until 2018 when he moved on to Xavier where he would be promoted to Associate Head Coach, and then named the Interim Head Coach during the 2022 NIT, Coach Hayes led Xavier to a NIT Championship going 4-0 as the Interim Head Coach despite Sean Miller being hired to be the next Head Coach at Xavier starting in the 2022-23 season.

Coach Hayes was introduced as the Head Coach at Georgia State University on April 6, 2022.

Coach Alex Church shares his journey from growing up in Hedgesville, WV to coaching at Marshall and UAB.

After playing for his father [Kelly Church] at Hedgesville High School, he became a Student Manager at Marshall University where he helped them advance to the NCAA Tournament - where they went on to upset Wichita State before falling to West Virginia in the Round of 32. Coach Church accepted a Graduate Assistant position at UAB under Coach Rob Ehsan where they went on to have a 39-28 overall record with a winning record in C-USA competition. That first season in Birmingham they accepted a postseason bid to the CBI, and despite going 19-13 the following season, the staff was dismissed after advancing past UTSA in the 1st Round of the Conference USA Tournament - which ultimately ended due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Coach Bob Williams talks about growing up in New York and being the son of a highly successful coach. He played for his father and then transferred to Ithaca College and after playing his junior season decided to transition into coaching.
He served as a Student Assistant Coach at Ithaca and after graduating he was named the Head Coach at Indian River High School in New York prior to being hired as an Assistant Coach at NCAA Division III Potsdam State (NY) from 1990-94. Coach Williams served as the Associate Head Coach at Jefferson Community College during the 1994-95 under his father before succeeding him for two years compiling a record of 53-14.
Glenville State College hired him as their Head Coach and from 1997-2002 and left the program in much better shape than he found it. He went on to spend the next 17 seasons as the Head Coach at West Virginia University Tech, Williams led West Virginia Tech to the NAIA National Tournament in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The Golden Bears were 30-5 in his final season at Tech in what amounted to Williams' most wins in a single season. During the 2018-19 season, Tech was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation (NAIA DIII). The squad was also crowned the River States Conference regular season champions as well as claiming the River States Conference Championship.
Williams was voted "Coach of the Year" three times, recorded his 403rd career win with five 22-win seasons, produced 14 All-Americans and won three conference championships at West Virginia Tech.
The recipient of three "Coach of the Year" honors, who has amassed 400 career wins, has mentored several current coaches and professional players, and a member of multiple Hall of Fames, Coach Bob Williams is a basketball lifer who share tremendous insights and what he's learned along the way.

He led his high school to an undefeated season culminating in a state championship before playing college basketball at Mount Saint Mary's under the late Jim Phelan. His senior year he played for Milan Brown, after graduating he started his coaching career at [then D3] Henry & Henry College under the late Bob Johnson.

Pat Flannery hired him to be his Director of Basketball Operations at Bucknell, where they won the Patriot League regular season title. Coach Tony Shaver hired Jamion to his coaching staff at William & Mary as an Assistant Coach where he remained on staff for three seasons before accepting a job at VCU under Shaka Smart.

Coach Christian helped lead the VCU to a Colonial Athletic Association Championship, and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2012. His alma mater hired him to be their Head Coach in 2012 and he spent six seasons there. He implemented his "Mayhem" style of play, which led them to the NCAA Tournament twice.

He accepted the Head Coach job at Siena where he led the largest turnaround in Division I that season before leaving to become the Head Coach at George Washington University. Coach Christian spoke very candid about his tenure at GW including his dismissal at the conclusion of his third season at the helm.

The Virginia native got his start as an Assistant Coach at Randolph College under [current Roanoke College Head Coach] Clay Nunley before joining the AAU ranks while also coaching at Fork Union Military Academy. After leaving FUMA, Coach Meriwether coached at Genesis Academy prior to taking an Assistant Coach position at West Virginia Wesleyan.

After one and a half seasons as the Assistant Coach at West Virginia Wesleyan, he was named the Interim Head Coach and shares what went through his mind - and how he was able to coach the rest of the season with the uncertainly that an interim title entails.

Coach Meriwether talks about how he was able to have success at West Virginia Wesleyan as well as how difficult it was to leave for the high school ranks at The Miller School of Albemarle. His success as the Head Coach at The Miller School has been terrific - recently one of his former players was on the Saint Peter's team that went to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament.

Interview w/ Coach Mike Jarvis (Former HC at St. John's & George Washington)

Coach Mike Jarvis shares his journey from growing up in Cambridge Massachusetts to becoming a NCAA D1 Head Coach. After finishing his playing career at Northeastern he joined the coaching staff there and then Harvard before becoming the Head Coach at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. He coached Patrick Ewing, Rumeal Robinson, and Karl Hobbs in high school including winning three-consecutive state championships (1979-1981), including a remarkable 77-1 record during that run. Coach Jarvis was named Massachusetts HS Coach of the Year in each of those three seasons.

Boston University named him their Head Coach in 1985 and he led them to two NCAA Tournament appearances. He led the Terriers to a 101-50 record during his five seasons at the helm before accepting the Head Coach position at George Washington.

Coach Jarvis lead the George Washington University to three NCAA tournament appearances, including the Sweet 16 in the 1993 NCAA Tournament. He made history by being the first African American father-son coaching team. Coach Jarvis led the Colonials to two wins over number one nationally ranked UMass - including at home with President Bill Clinton in attendance. In 1997 Coach Jarvis served as the President of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. After accumulating a 143–100 record at GW, he was hired at St. John's. He coached at St. John's from 1998 to 2003. In 1998 Coach Jarvis was named ‘National Coach of the Year ‘by the Black Coaches Association and that same year he would be named ‘Father of the Year’ by Ebony Magazine. Coach Jarvis coached guys like Ron Artest and took St. John's to the Elite Eight in his first season as Head Coach. They won the NIT in 2003 and after leaving St. John's he worked for ESPN and Yahoo before returning to the sidelines at Florida Atlantic for six seasons.

At Florida Atlantic he guided them to the NIT in his third season. Coach Jarvis has written three book (Skills for Life, Everybody Needs a Head Coach, and The Seven C’s Of Leadership). Currently he works at South Florida Bible College and Theological Seminary in addition to pubic speaking.

Interview w/ Josh Gross (Head Coach at Johnson & Wales Charlotte)

Coach Josh Gross shares his journey from growing up in Maryland to becoming a standout player at UNCG, embarking on a professional basketball career, and now coaching college basketball. He played at UNCG under current Iowa Head Coach Fran McCaffery and shares his experiences and what he learned from the UNCG coaches. Coach Gross played in the NBA D-League (now G League) as well as numerous other countries before breaking into the coaching ranks at the HS level. From there he moved onto Belmont Abbey (NCAA D2) under former UNCG Assistant Coach Billy Taylor. He returned to the HS ranks as a Head Coach for a couple seasons before returning to Belmont Abbey. During their NCAA Tournament run he was named the Head Coach at Johnson & Wales (NC) and he speaks candidly about what it was like to coach a team, but having it announced that he was named the next Head Coach at another school. The 2021-22 season was his first season at the helm of Johnson & Wales, and he's certainly exceeded expectations. Coach Gross is another example of a BIG time coach coaching at the small college level. Interview w/ Coach Ben Tanoff (Director of Basketball Operations at Presbyterian College)

Coach Ben Tanoff shares his journey from growing up in Michigan and running cross country and track at the NCAA DIII level at Kenyon College to now being on the men's basketball coaching staff at NCAA DI Presbyterian College.
After accepting a teaching position in South Carolina straight out of college, he began serving as the co-Head Coach for the JV and Varsity basketball teams at the school. Following a successful stint in South Carolina he moved on to the University of Pikeville to be a Graduate Assistant Coach at the University of Pikeville. The Bears made back-to-back NAIA national tournament appearances and were Mid-South Conference champions in 2017-2018.
Upon completing his master's degree from Pikeville, Coach Tanoff served as an Assistant Coach at Maine Maritime Academy. After one season he moved on to Georgia Tech in the ACC.
Georgia Tech won the school's first ACC Championship since 1993 during his time with the Yellowjackets. After meeting with Coach Pastner after the season and expressing his desire to coach basketball in more of an expanded role, he ended up at Presbyterian College as their Director of Basketball Operations - ironically enough in the same conference that he had accepted a position with before moving back to the Palmetto State.
Coach Tanoff is such a genuinely nice person and really great basketball mind, he has a very bright future in this profession!

Coach Joanne P. McCallie (Coach P) shares her journey both in basketball and as a mental health advocate. At the conclusion of the 2019-20 season she stepped down at Duke after a 28 year head coaching career including 13 seasons in Durham. Coach won 628 games at the NCAA D1 level which is 35th all time and coached in Elite Eights, Final Fours and even the NCAA Championship. In 2005 she was named the Associated Press National Coach of the Year. She’s the author of two books (Choice Not Chance & Secret Warrior) and is currently doing motivational speaking and mental health advocacy work - be sure to to checkout her website www.CoachP.org

He was a great JUCO player who ended up going to Shepherd (D2) where he shared the backcourt with Chad Myers (friend of the podcast) who’s now the HC of the IMG Post Grad team.
