#106 - India-UK Relations with Hon. MP Bob Blackman
Robert 'Bob' Blackman is a Conservative Party leader from the United Kingdom, who has served as the Member of Parliament from Harrow East since 2010. He has also served as the Executive Secretary of the 1922 Committee since 2012.    Bob is a great friend of India, representing a constituency, where a third of his voters are of Indian origin. He has made great attempts to integrate and assimilate his constituents of the Indian origin in the business, social and political mainstream over the years. In the Labour dominated politics of the London area, he is one of the few Conservative MPs who win consistently with his strong local connect.   Bob understands the UK - India relations very well. He has been advocating a trade deal between the two countries. He tweeted the myths being spread on the recent Indian farm reforms and appealed to his fellow British MPs to not fall to the propaganda being spread about these laws. Bob had met PM Narendra Modi one on one during his last UK visit.   Bob was awarded the Padma Shri for exemplary public service in 2020. #103: Who is the next CM of Tamil Nadu? | Bharatvaarta | Politics
The Tamil Nadu assembly elections will be held in a single phase on  April 6. For the last 50 years, the State’s politics has been dominated  by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and The All India Anna Dravida  Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).   For half that time, there have been two dominant figures, loved and  reviled in equal measure: J Jayalalithaa of the AIADMK and M Karunanidhi  of the DMK. But, with their passing in 2016 and 2018, respectively, the  State’s politics has seen tremendous flux over the last few years.  Parties have transmogrified, alliances have shifted shape, and new  entrants like cine star Kamal Hassan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam and T. T. V.  Dhinakaran’s breakaway faction from the AIADMK, Amma Makkal Munnetra  Kazhagam, are in the mix. Who will fill this political vacuum? Will the AIADMK suffer the  incumbent’s curse? Will the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), which has  struggled to form a base in the State make new ground? What is the voter  sentiment now and what issues will come to the fore on election day? We  discuss all of this and more with Prasanna Vishwanathan (CEO, Swarajya  Magazine) in this comprehensive analysis of the upcoming Tamil Nadu  elections.   This podcast is available on YouTube, Apple, Google, Spotify, Breaker,  Stitcher, and other popular platforms. This is a joint production between Bharatvaarta and Conservative Friends of Commonwealth (CFOC). CFOC seeks to strengthen the Conservative ties with the Commonwealth to promote and uphold shared values of democracy. The UK and other Commonwealth countries have a large Indian diaspora and they have all been naturally interested in what’s going on in India with respect to the farm law reform.   Our guest for this episode is Dr Anand Ranganathan. Anand is a Professor at the Special Centre for Molecular Medicine at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. #095 - Battleground Kerala: Will Pinarayi Vijayan return? | Bharatvaarta | Politics
Kerala is scheduled to go to the polls in May. Politically, it has  largely been bi-polar, with power alternating between the CPI(M)-led  Left Democratic Front and the Congress led United Democratic Front.  While the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government has praised for having  delivered welfare schemes efficiently during the Kerala Floods of 2018,  it’s recent mishandling of the COVID pandemic and also the spate of  scams has cast a shadow on its performance. In the UDF, the Congress’  decline politically has mirrored the rise of the Muslim League who are  now a more assertive ally, causing tensions between various allied  demographics. The Kerala Congress (Mani) split, with K M Mani's son Jose K Mani,  allying with the LDF has made matters grave. Meanwhile, the BJP has seen  a groundswell of support in recent times led by Prime Minister Modi’s  own popularity; he has inaugurated multiple infrastructure projects in  the State, recently, including the 2,000-MW Pugalur-Thrissur high  voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission corridor. On this episode, we are joined by political experts and commentators, Ananth Krishna Subhalakshmy and Rohit Jayaraman for a deep dive analysis  of what factors could influence the results of this upcoming election.  This podcast is available on YouTube, Apple, Google, Spotify, Breaker,  Stitcher, and other popular platforms. If you like this episode, then  please like, subscribe and share! #088 - Wall Street Bets v/s Hedge Funds: Short Selling & more | Bharatvaarta
Social media has been abuzz about Redditors on a forum called “WallStreetBets”, banding together and buying up stock in a gaming merchandise retailer called GameStop. They are orchestrating a “short squeeze” against hedge funds that had taken a short position on the stock. Melvin Capital, one of the prime targets, lost over 30% of it’s AUM and required an emergency infusion of $2.75 billion from fellow hedge funds Citadel and Point72. This is being seen as a triumph of the retail investors against institutions that purport to manipulate markets at the cost of smaller investors. To give us an insider’s perspective on what is happening, we are joined by experienced traders, Rajiv and Dhiraj (anon), who speak about the significance of these events while also explaining concepts related to short selling, how it is different in India, what retail investors should beware of, and much more. This is a must listen episode for those interested in diving deeper on recent events and developing an understanding of markets and finance. #086 - The Life & Times of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose | Vivek Khaitan, Abhishek Bannerjee
Subhas Chandra Bose was an Indian nationalist whose defiant patriotism  made him a hero in India, but whose attempt during World War II to rid  India of British rule with the help of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan  left a troubled legacy. The honorific Netaji, first applied in early  1942 to Bose in Germany by the Indian soldiers of the Indische Legion  and by the German and Indian officials in the Special Bureau for India  in Berlin, was later used throughout India.    On the occasion of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti, we put together a  special panel of guests to remember Netaji's impact on nascent India.   In this special episode of the Bharatvaarta podcast, Vivek Khaitan and  Abhishek Bannerjee deconstruct the life and deeds of Subhash Chandra  Bose, from his relationship with the Indian National Congress to his  death, which is shrouded in mystery to this day. We also explore some  interesting counterfactuals, such as Bose holding on to the INC's  leadership position or him returning to India after his death.   We also look into Bose's infamous relationship with the Axis powers, the  formation of the INA and the role it played in the freedom struggle,  and his significance in modern India. We end by exploring the current  effort to resurrect his legacy by the ruling BJP party.    This podcast is available on YouTube, Apple, Google, Spotify, Breaker,  Stitcher, and other popular platforms. #084 - India In The Foreign Press | Ruchir Sharma, Vishal Ganesan
India’s coverage in the foreign media is subject to much debate – we often cringe or complain about the vast divergence between reality and perception.   Is this a recent phenomenon or is there a historical precedence? What is the impact of this coverage? Are there state policies invested in what is seen and heard about India? Will we move away from the motifs of “caste, cows, and curry”? What can India do to control its narrative? How can “reverse the gaze”?   Joining us for this fascinating conversation are Ruchir Sharma (Media Critic, Popular Commentator) and Vishal Ganesan (Curator of @HindooHistory), who take us through the depths and nuances of the matter. While Ruchir brings in contemporary references of how and why foreign media covers India the way it does, Vishal retraces back to how India has been portrayed in the West over hundreds of years and draws upon philosophical and theological references. This is a rich, insightful discussion about India that is a must listen for everyone.   This podcast is available on YouTube, Apple, Google, Spotify, Breaker, Stitcher, and other popular platforms. #083 - "Vajpayee: The Years That Changed India" - Shakti Sinha | Rajeev Mantri
Former prime minister of India and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was an understated and a singular politician of the kind rarely seen in contemporary times. His patriotism was uncompromising, forged out of the paradoxes of his life: The sensitive poet who summoned nerves of Steel to conduct the Pokhran-ii nuclear tests; the man from humble beginnings who envisioned a project as Titanic as the Golden quadrilateral highway network. Devoid of any political pedigree or patronage, he harnessed his diplomatic acumen to transform India's relations with the United States, which had long been mired in misunderstandings rooted in the Cold War. His calculated decisions led to key strategic and economic policy achievements. in this book, Shakti Sinha, a close Associate of Vajpayee, helps us understand Vajpayee as a decision-maker.   The narrative focuses on the political challenges Vajpayee faced, and on his key initiatives in the strategic and economic fields during his first Term as prime Minister, which have had a lasting impact. 'Vajpayee' fleshes out not only Vajpayee's political philosophy but also provides an insider's account of how the former PM thought and worked. In this episode, we will be discussing the book "Vajpayee: The Years That Changed India" with the author, Shakti Sinha. This episode will be hosted by Srivatsa Subbanna and Rajeev Mantri and will also include an audience Q&A.

#080 - Forgotten Warriors of the Kurukshetra War | Shivakumar GV | Ranjith Radhakrishnan | Saiswaroopa Iyer
In this special live episode of Bharatvaarta, we will be discussing the  book "Unsung Valour: Forgotten Warriors Of Kurukshetra" with the authors  Saiswaroopa Iyer ji, Shivakumar GV ji, and Ranjith Radhakrishnan ji.  Did you know that a little-known Panchala prince, Yudhamanyu,  single-handedly defeated the great Duryodhana? Or that Shakuni was a valiant warrior on the battlefield? How did Iravan, the son of Arjuna by Naga Princess Ulupi, rout the whole  Gandhara armies all by himself? And how did the ageing king Bhagadatta, perched on his famed elephant  Supratika, defeat a whole army of the Pandavas led by Bhima?  The great war of Mahabharata which claimed the lives of 18 Akshauhinis  (nearly 4 million warriors) was not just a carnage of that order but a  battle that warrants a careful study from various angles to learn,  unlearn and relearn the dynamic and elusive nature of Dharma.   The authors' quantitative study showed that the 18 day war saw about 466  individual confrontations with the Pandava camp winning a lion's share  of 216 and Kaurava warriors scoring over 90 victories. It is by delving  into the perspectives of such warriors that we can get a close and yet  distant version of the legendary feud that claimed so many lives.   Indic Academy  called in for short stories about these warriors and  selected the best entries to publish the book as an anthology called  "Unsung Valour".  Tune in to the livestream Tuesday, 5th January, 7 PM onwards to be a  part of this engaging discussion. We will also hold a Q&A section at  the end to tackle viewer questions, so make sure to ask questions in  the live chat!

#077 - Was ABV India's Most Underrated PM? | Aashish Chandorkar, Rajeev Mantri
Atal Bihari Vajpayee (25 December 1924 – 16 August 2018) was an Indian  statesman who served three terms as the Prime Minister of India, first  for a term of 13 days in 1996, then for a period of 13 months from 1998  to 1999, followed by a full term from 1999 to 2004. A member of the  Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he was the first Indian prime minister not  of the Indian National Congress to serve a full term in office. He was  also noted as a poet and a writer.  He was a member of the Indian Parliament for over five decades, having  been elected ten times to the Lok Sabha, the lower house, and twice to  the Rajya Sabha, the upper house.  He served as the Member of Parliament  for Lucknow, retiring from active politics in 2009. He was among the  founding members of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), of which he was  president from 1968 to 1972. The BJS merged with several other parties  to form the Janata Party, which won the 1977 general election. In March  1977, Vajpayee became the Minister of External Affairs in the cabinet of  Prime Minister Morarji Desai.  He resigned in 1979, and the Janata  alliance collapsed soon after. Former members of the BJS formed the BJP  in 1980, with Vajpayee its first president.  During his tenure as prime minister, India carried out the Pokhran-II  nuclear tests in 1998. Vajpayee sought to improve diplomatic relations  with Pakistan, travelling to Lahore by bus to meet with Prime Minister  Nawaz Sharif.  After the 1999 Kargil War with Pakistan, he sought to  restore relations through engagement with President Pervez Musharraf,  inviting him to India for a summit at Agra.  The administration of Narendra Modi declared in 2014 that Vajpayee's  birthday, 25 December, would be marked as Good Governance Day. In 2015,  he was conferred India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, by  the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. He died on 16 August 2018 of  age-related illness.

#076 - Power Sector in India - Way Ahead
India's power sector is going through major transformation. A focus on clean and sustainable power generation sources has been driving this transformation over the last few years. Increasing urbanisation and industrialisation in the coming decades will mean that India will need access to reliable and clean power. As of September 2020, India's renewable capacity stood at 89.22 GW with a target of 227 GW by FY22. In this episode we have Mudit Jain(Head of Research - Tata Cleantech) and Rajat Seksaria (CEO - Acme Solar) talk to Srivatsa Subbanna about the challenges facing the distribution companies and why they continue to be loss-making, they then talk about the opportunities in the renewable sector and how the sector has evolved over the last decade. They then talk about the amendments to the Electricity act and how the government is looking to solarize agriculture potentially adding to new capacity generation and end with sharing their thoughts on the way ahead when it comes to the privatisation of discoms. This episode is a fascinating deep-dive into the power sector, its structure and how the entire industry has gone through a transformation and how the changes could shape the industry over the coming years. #075 - Why is Indian culture misrepresented in Cinema and Arts? | Kaushal Inamdar & Nivedita Tiwari | Culture | Bharatvaarta
In this episode, we speak to award-winning musician, Kaushal Inamdar, and noted television actress, Nivedita Tiwari, about how Indian traditions and culture are depicted in mainstream arts and cinema.  We begin this discussion with Kaushal ji explaining very eloquently how the representation of culture has evolved over time in our movies and music, while Nivedita ji speaks about the impact that OTT platforms have had on the kind of stories that are being told and how the focus has moved beyond metros to small towns and villages. We then discuss the politicization of arts – is this a recent phenomenon? Is there scope for activism through arts? Should the artist impose their own sensibilities into their art? And why are so many artists now of a Leftist persuasion? We end with suggestions from both guests on how we can sensitise artists and creators to native Indian traditions and culture, so there can be a more accurate reflection of the same in the mainstream arts and what the government can do to help the same. This is a fascinating, nuanced discourse in the ways art can impact society.  The podcast is available on YouTube, Apple, Google, Spotify, Breaker, Stitcher, and other popular platforms. #071 - Significance of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Polls | Rohit Jayaraman & Sudhir Kumar
In this episode of the Bharatvaarta podcast we analyse and discuss the significance of the recently concluded Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Polls, where the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) emerged as the single-largest party, winning 55 of the 150 wards in a closely-fought election.  The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made huge gains to bag 49 wards, followed by The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) which trailed with 44 wards. The Indian National Congress finished with only 2 seats.   Our guests, political commentators, Rohit Jayaraman and Sudhir Kumar, define the broader trends at play – TRS’ waning popularity, BJP’s gaining dominance, AIMIM’s polarising influence, Congress’ perennial losses, media’s flawed narratives, and the significance these hold in the Politics of Telangana and the rest of the country. This is a fascinating deep dive into an election that could be a milestone moment in Politics.    This podcast is available on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Breaker, Stitcher, and other popular platforms. #062 - India: Public Policy Failures and Solutions | Shankkar Aiyar
Shankkar Aiyar is a veteran journalist and author. In a career spanning over three and half decades, Shankkar has worked for leading publications like the Indian Express and India Today. His 1991 story on Indian government pledging the gold reserve highlighted the severe balance of payment crisis faced by India then and shot him to national limelight.    His most recent book - The Gated Republic: India's Public Policy Failures and Private Solutions - talks about areas like healthcare, education, security, power and water. These are basic utilities the provision of which over the years has lagged the demand, despite their essential nature. Due to the failures of government and administrative machinery, private players have intervened to fill gaps, often hurting the marginal sections of the society on pricing.    Shankkar talks about his view on how effective public – private partnerships could have evolved in these areas with government oversight but haven’t. He also describes the meticulous research he has put in to write the book in a few months.   Before The Gated Republic, he wrote Aadhaar: A Biometric History of India's 12-Digit Revolution. Shankkar talks about how this book was received personally by Late President Shri Pranab Mukherjee, ex-Prime Minister Shri Manmohan Singh and the incumbent Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.    We also cover the content of his very first book Accidental India, where he wrote about governments using moments of crisis for fundamental reforms long before the concept was widely talked about in Delhi. He makes a few suggestions for the government to reimagine governance using technology coming out of the current pandemic.   This discussion is conducted by Aashish Chandorkar, who is a public policy analyst and author based in Pune. Aashish has known Shankkar for about a decade now and Shankkar had bounced some ideas related to The Gated Republic with Aashish while he was writing the book.

Dr Uday Kulkarni is an author of five excellent books on 18th century Maratha history. He is an AFMC, Pune graduate and a retired navy surgeon. Dr Kulkarni started writing about Maratha history a decade back, while still practicing medicine.    His first book Solstice at Panipat, describing the 1761 Panipat War, released in 2011 on 250th anniversary of what perhaps is the most significant war in Indian history. He followed it with Bakhar of Panipat (2014), The Era of Baji Rao (2016) and James Wales: Artist & Antiquarian in the time of Peshwa Sawai Madhavrao (2019).   The Extraordinary Epoch of Nanasaheb Peshwa is his fifth book covering the life and times of Nanasaheb, appointed as Peshwa in 1740 by Chhatrapati Shahu, after the untimely death of Peshwa Baji Rao. This book is not a biography but rather describes the Maratha era leading up to the Panipat War and the year 1761 when Nanasaheb died.   In this discussion, we talk to Dr Kulkarni about this book, his passion for writing about Maratha history and the very intriguing 18th century India. He talks about how the British won over India from Marathas and not the Mughals - a little known fact of our turbulent past.   Amit Paranjape, the anchor for this conversation, is a Pune-based history buff and technology entrepreneur. Amit himself has deep knowledge of Maratha history and has helped Dr Kulkarni with the production process of his latest book. Amit also compered the book launch program, where Madhya Pradesh minister Smt Yashodhara Raje Scindia was the chief guest.

#057 - Bihar Elections 2020 - Deep Dive | Aashish Chandorkar, Vivek Khaitan & Rohit Jayaraman
Voting in the Bihar State elections begins on October 28th and India’s 3rd most populous state goes to polls. Sentiment for the current National Democratic Alliance (NDA), a coalition of Janata Dal United (JD - U) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Nitish Kumar is mixed. While popular consensus is that governance over the last five years has been ordinary, Bihar is among the least affected States in the current COVID crisis. The State has numerous parties, key among them the BJP, JD (U), RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal), LJP (Lok Janshakti Party), and the Indian National Congress (INC), and has also seen complex political alliances. We begin this election analysis by looking at the voting patterns of the 2015 elections and then progress to discussing key stakeholders such as the current CM, Nitish Kumar, LJP’s Chirag Paswan, RJD’s Lalu Prasad Yadav, and his son, Tejasvi Yadav, and their strategy and influence. This is a comprehensive, data-driven electoral analysis of Bihar and is of interest to anyone who is associated with the State or of Indian Politics, in general. Next, they discuss key aspects of this popular idea of India, which are secularism and socialism, and how those aspects play out. #018 - Bharatvaarta - India's Response to Covid-19 | Balaji Srinivasan and Sri Thiruvadanthai
We’re living in exceptional times. We’ve been in lockdown for over 2 months here in India.  Just last week, the Government announced a stimulus package for businesses, and there have been about 120,000 confirmed cases and over 3000 deaths due to the coronavirus.  In this podcast, we examine India’s Covid-19 response in further detail from a Global-lens. We compare and contrast what has happened here with what governments, institutions, and societies have done elsewhere in the World, new innovation stemming from the current crisis how that could help India leapfrog progress, and really understand the larger impact of all of this going forward.  Joining our host, Roshan Cariappa, in conversation are Srinivas Thiruvadanthai and Balaji Srinivasan.  Srinivas Thiruvadanthai is Managing Director and Director of Research, at the Levy Forecasting Center in New York. Aside from Economics, which is his main expertise, Sri also has an interest in banking, technology, and psychology. He has been an active voice on social, economic, and political matters concerning India.  Balaji Srinivasan is a technologist, investor & entrepreneur based in Silicon Valley. #017 - Bharatvaarta - Agriculture and Labour Reforms in India | Reforms in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, & Gujarat | Way forward
Agriculture employs about 50% of our country and yet produces about 15% of GDP. Industry, which is often positioned as an alternative to agriculture, employs about 25-30% of the population and produces around the same as percentage of GDP. What is often said is that there’s a huge scope for improvement in both Agriculture and Industry. A major hindrance to this is that our laws are archaic and that it’s easier to just hand out doles than reform things at a more fundamental level. But, in light of Prime Minister Modi’s asking states to undertake fundamental reforms, we have seen a few states step forward and pioneer some massive Agricultural and Labour reforms, both of which could make a significant difference to the progress of people. In this fascinating episode, we are joined by Aashish Chandorkar (Author, Public Policy Commentator), Rajeev Mantri (Investor, Writer), and Vivek Khaitan (Pharma Entrepreneur) to discuss recent Agriculture and Labour reforms announced by the Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh. They discuss the context and impact of these reforms and what more can be done to improve Agriculture and Industry in India. This podcast is available on Anchor fm, Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Pocketcasts, YouTube, and other popular platforms. Listen, subscribe, and share.
