In this episode, I talk to Saran Preeti, one of the organizers of Romantika Uz Beas. According to the organizers, Romantika Uz Beas is the hardest Ultra race in India. With an elevation gain of 15000 meters in 670km such claims don't seem too far fetched. The race is so hard that there is only one finisher so far for the race. For the first time in 3 years of existence of the race, Kabir Rachure emerged as the only successful finisher of this Ultra race. We talk to Saran Preeti about the origins of the race and what makes this race so hard to finish. It was really interesting to hear about all the challenges that the race offers both for the racers and the organizers. It is great to see challenging events like this coming up to cater to the Ultra cycling community. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

#168 How to Make Your Own Training Plan for 2024 - Venky in Conversation with Gokul Krishna of TBA

Wishing all the listeners a very happy new year. I thought I'd start the new year with something different. Today I'm going to share a conversation I had with my good friend and a coach himself, Gokul Krishna of The Bike Affair an year or so ago. The topic of the conversation was how to make your own training plan. I'm sure that the topic will be of interest and of use to many of you. It can be due to various reasons that you might not be working with a coach but still want to follow a structured plan to improve your fitness and work towards specific goals. What are the general principles you need to keep in mind while preparing a training plan for yourself? What is periodization, what is base, build and peaking etc. That is what we spoke about in this conversation. We were interacting over an app called Leher which was similar to Clubhouse. So, there is some interactivity and audience questions as well. I'm not sure either of those apps exist right now but I thought this conversation could be of value to some of us. So, enjoy it and let me know if you want to hear more of such topics in the future by commenting on the Youtube channel of the podcast.

A bit about myself:

I'm Venkat/Venkateswara Rao in my work avatar, working as a Chief Data Analyst in the IT industry in Bangalore. I'm Venky/Bikeyvenky for my friends in the cycling community.

All through my life I struggled with weight and health issues. After multiple failed attempts through the life to get fit and healthy, in 2008, I managed to lose 16kgs. My motivation was to be able to take care of my unborn son with the thought that "if I'm not able to take care of myself, how am I going to take care of my family?". When my son was 6 months old, having lost 16kgs, I picked up a bike to keep that weight off and stay fit. That became a passion and lost more weight and became better at it. I continue to train myself not just to stay fit but also race competitively in races in and outside the country. I also have been coaching a few riders to get stronger and faster at cycling since 2016.

With 'The Working Athlete Podcast', I have a bit of a selfish motive. That is, it will provide me an opportunity for me to meet and talk to many people from all walks of life across different sports to learn how they manage an active lifestyle while doing well at work. I hope to share those learnings with all of you. That way, it will help both you and me to keep learning and keep growing.

It has been 3 years since this podcast started and miraculously, I have managed to put out an episode every single week for the past 3 years. After 3 years, I have taken the recording out of my tiny home studio and out into a new recording space courtesy of a kind friend. With the help of another good friend, Dipankar, I was setting up the space last week. We wanted to do a test recording. What could be the topic of this test recording? Some of you know that I have done my first official Half Marathon a few weeks ago at the Bangalore Marathon on 8th October.

So, for the first episode in the new recording space, my good friend Dipankar Paul interviewed me about my running. We talked about my weightloss journey and the start of my fitness journey with running. We touch upon why I cut short my running career before what was supposed to be my first Marathon back in 2010 and why I decided to run a Half Marathon this time. We talked about all the mistakes I did back then and the new mistakes I did this time as well as the new learnings I had because of those mistakes while successfully finishing my first official Half Marathon. It was fun getting interviewed on my own podcast. I sincerely thank DP for being such a great friend and being there always when I needed him.

In this episode we talk to the Goa Ironman 70.3 champion of 2022 and 2023, Nihal Ahmed Baig. When we see an athlete winning all the time, it is easy to say that he or she is gifted, talented etc without much thinking on our part. In my view, what it does is diminish the kind of effort that goes on behind the scenes, and discount the kind of battles they might have fought in the process of getting to where they are. This interaction with Nihal brings forth precisely these battles he had to fight to make it to the start line and then make it across the finish line ahead of everyone else on the day.

Today's guest Grinshina Karthik, Grinny for all her friends, is an ultra cyclist and randonnee from Bangalore who recently finished the 1200km Paris Brest Paris ride. She is one of the five Indian women who finished the challenging ride this year. Grinny, in her own words, is not a super strong athlete. But, what sets her apart is that she never shies away from taking on the scary challenges. She had many failures like at PBP 2019 and LEL 2022. #150 Cycling Culture in India, Can We Compete with The World?- Venky's Interview on OoruLabs Podcast

#150 Cycling Culture in India, Can We Compete with The World?- Venky's Interview on OoruLabs Podcast

Welcome to the working athlete podcast. On the occasion of 150th episode on the podcast, I thought I'd share an interview I have done with Bangalore's cycling mayor and urban mobility activist Sathya Sankaran and his cohost Knerav Kodolikar. Sathya was on this podcast talking about cycling activism and policy among other things in episode #52. He recently started a podcast called Oorulabs where he addresses various issues related to urban mobility. In this episode we talk about where we were 10 years ago w.r.t cycling, where we are currently and where we can go in the next 10 years an beyond. We talked about what we can do to improve cycling culture in general in India. It was fun. I hope you enjoy it.

===From OoruLabs===

@bikeyvenky talks to us about how India can produce top class cyclist who can compete in events like the Tour de France or Giro de Italia, which is considered the top events in cycling. What are the attitudes and misconceptions around cycling. What is scale, how do we define scale, how do we create leagues and how all this ties down to culture of cycling. How do we compare against countries in Europe like Netherlands or Belgium. Of course we talk about how all this rubs off on urban cycling and transform cities.

Welcome to the OoruLabs podcast (https://podcast.oorulabs.com). Ever complained how bad our cities are? How bad your commute is? You’ll get to hear from people who are working to solve these problems. This is your weekly soapbox for Urban Sustainability with Sathya Sankaran and his co-host for this show Knerav Kodolikar

For many of us, completing an Ironman is a big thing. The thought of swimming for 3.8km followed by 180km cycling and then running a marathon of 42.2km is hard enough for a lot of us. Not so for today's guest Prashant Hipparagi. Prashant is an ultra triathlete who recently completed Brasil DecaTri which is a race involving completing 10 Ironman distances in one go covering 38km swimming, 1800km cycling and 422km of running in 11 days. Yes, that is right. 10 Ironman distances at one go.

In this episode Prashant shares about his journey in triathlon so far including the experience of completing the Brasil DecaTri. It is amazing how he was able to complete such a hard ultra event without any crew. He was depending on a combination of homemade nutrition made out of peanuts and local hydration drink mix he carried with him to complete such an arduous event. His simplicity and no nonsense approach comes through in this interaction as well. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

With 'The Working Athlete Podcast', I hope to meet and talk to many people from all walks of life across different sports to learn how they manage an active lifestyle while doing well at work. I hope to share those learnings with all of you.

Today's guest Chenthil Mohan is a photographer friend of mine who is amazing behind a camera. He became a cyclist and a runner as he fell in love with sport while shooting sport as a freelance photographer. On our last episode with him on this podcast in episode #36, we talked about his journey from a corporate job to becoming a full time photographer.

In this episode we talk about how his perspective about work, life and sport has changed post pandemic. We talk about how pursuing perfection can be a paralyzing trait to have as a photographer or as a sportsman. It need not be pursuing heroic feats of endurance or as Che puts it, Stupid feats of endurance or nothing. It need not be 100% or nothing. We talk about finding peace with just doing the work and not being too judgmental about it. Che always brings a refreshing perspective to things and this conversation was no different. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

A bit about myself:

I'm Venkat/Venkateswara Rao in my work avatar, working as a Chief Data Analyst in the IT industry in Bangalore. I'm Venky/Bikeyvenky for my friends in the cycling community.
