Teaching The Queens English

Teaching The Queens English

In the world of linguistics and language teaching, few niches are as distinctive and gratifying as teaching the Queen's English. Often referred to as 'Received Pronunciation', the Queen's English is esteemed for its clarity, elegance, and prestigious cultural heritage. There's a particular allure and cachet to teaching this refined variety of English, and this intricate world beckons to both teachers and students attempting to master its nuances.

The Allure of Queen's English

The Queen's English is more than just a language; it is a symbol of history, refinement, and traditionally English etiquette. As an educator specialized in teaching the Queen's English, it is our duty to convey not only the language but also the cultural elements embedded in it.

Teaching the Queen's English goes beyond just the mechanics of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. It involves acquainting learners with diverse literary works, cultural references, historical events, and social norms that have helped shape this prestigious dialect of English.

The Teaching Experience

Teaching the Queen's English is a unique experience, both enriching and rewarding. There is a certain satisfaction that comes from seeing students master the rhythm, tone, and inflection of this eloquent language style. With each lesson, they inch closer to the fluency and sophistication associated with the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch or Dame Judi Dench.

To achieve this, personally tailored and flexible teaching methods are used, each balancing the rigour and the enjoyability of learning. Lessons include the conventional grammatical cornerstones but are often supplemented with engaging activities such as public speaking, debating, and script reading.

The Challenges and Rewards

However, do not mistake the teaching of Queen’s English for a simple task. It requires consistency, patience, and a deep understanding of both the language and its cultural significances. The subtleties of accent and idiom usage, the particularities of formal and informal speech - these are all facets that require painstaking attention to detail.

Yet, the satisfaction derived from successfully imparting this knowledge and watching your students evolve from hesitant beginners to fluent English speakers who can command both the language and the respect of others is immense. It is the testimony to the teacher's hard work and dedication, and indeed to the beauty and grace of the Queen's English itself.

Conclusion

In closing, teaching the Queen's English is more than just sharing linguistic knowledge. It represents our commitment to preserving and transmitting one of the most cherished forms of English language and culture. It is not simply a niche; it is a noble endeavour that marries passion, patience, and pedagogy to create an enriching educational experience.

Therefore, if you are eager to explore this captivating realm of language teaching, come bask in the beauty of the Queen's English. Let us stride together, with the language of Shakespeare and Churchill as our guide, into the elegant labyrinth of history, tradition, and charm that awaits within

Eric Liddell

Eric Liddell

In the heart of the roaring twenties, wrapped within the thrill of the Scotland Vs Ireland Races, was a speech that still echoes after a century, a speech ignited with the hope of eternal values over fleeting glory. An athlete known primarily for his excellence on the running track, Eric Liddel, decided to use this platform to deliver a speech that demonstrated his deep-rooted faith and devotional commitment to Christianity.

Background

Born to Scottish missionaries in China on January 16, 1902, Eric's life was deeply rooted in principles of faith and discipline (Keddie, 2007). He moved to Scotland to complete his studies, following which he pursued his passion in athletics and soon gained fame as 'The Flying Scotsman' (McMillan, 2012).

The Event

In 1925, at the highly anticipated Scotland Vs Ireland Races, a 23-year-old Liddel decided to speak about his faith. For someone in the zenith of his athletic career, it was risky to steer from the expected script of athletic triumphs. However, Liddell was not one to shy away from showcasing his unwavering faith in Christ (Pollock, 1971).

The Speech

As Liddell stood before the captivated audience, he began, not with boasts of athletic prowess, but with words of humility and grace. Speaking with a passion that was palpable, Liddell spoke about the importance of being rooted in faith and serving God with unwavering commitment.

In his speech, he stated, "In the dust of defeat as well as the laurels of victory there is glory to be found if one has done his best… For each one of us, there is a race to be run, a goal to be reached, and a victory to be won" (Eric Liddell Centre, 2021). Using the metaphor of the race, Liddell highlighted the Christian's journey through life, emphasizing that one's personal achievements are not as important as living a life pleasing to God (Keddie, 2007).

Impact on English as a Second Language Students

As non-native English learners, this speech forms an excellent resource to study metaphorical language, persuasive language techniques, and cultural references within a historical context. Liddell employed eloquent language, drawing parallels between physical races and spiritual journeys, which provides students the opportunity to examine this usage in English language.

Conclusion

Eric Liddell's life was marked by his submissions to his faith, often defying societal norms and expectations. His speech at the Scotland vs Ireland Races served as a testament to his enduring commitment, showcasing the potency of his eloquence, his faith, and his persuasiveness.
