Discover what Kurt Nauck has in common with Pink Higgins (The Good Bad Man), why the Houston Museum of Natural Science bought his venture, and when he hired his Dad (15 minutes).

=================================================

CEO Blindspots® Podcast Guest: Kurt Nauck.

A lifelong entrepreneur, Kurt began his first business as a freshman in high school. Upon entering Texas A&M University, he started his second business, Korwear, selling senior boots and uniforms to the Aggie Corp of Cadets. He graduated with a degree in wildlife biology (which he never expected to use), but wound up starting another business in Houston called Wildlife on Wheels. Hiring wildlife graduates out of A&M, this traveling zoo serviced the greater Houston area for 8 years until he sold it to the Houston Museum of Natural Science where it continues to exist today.

Another business he began in 1984 was Memory Machines, a shop in downtown Houston specializing in mechanical and musical antiques. This operation morphed into Nauck's Vintage Records, the world's largest purveyor of vintage 78rpm and cylinder sound recordings made from the 1890s to the 1950s.

His involvement in the world of vintage records led to a 2009 Grammy nomination for a historical reissue of Edison cylinders entitled "Polk Miller and His Old South Quartet."

In 2012, Kurt formed Texas Ready, a company dedicated to teaching people how to become food self-sufficient. He and his Texas Ready business partner Lucinda Bailey sell heirloom seeds to people who wish to grow food in their own backyard, as well as food preservation equipment such as freeze dryers, dehydrators and canners, and they offer hands-on instruction pertaining to food production, preservation and storage.

Discover what Cole's son said that changed his approach to leadership, why Cole claims it's critical to discover people's natural wirings, and what strategies his companies employ to set new hires up for success (13 minutes).

CEO BLINDSPOTS® PODCAST GUEST: Cole Patchell

Cole Patchell is the President of the CRA group of companies (CRA, CRA Finished Tubes, PipeSearch, and K&B/CRA).

He grew up in an oilfield home and started working in the pipe yard at the age of 15. Cole graduated from the Miami University with a BS in Business, Economics, Entrepreneurship, and began his career with McDermott International. In December 2008, Cole joined Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRA), founded by his father John Patchell in 2001. For the first 4 years at CRA, he spent up to 6 months of the year visiting customers in over 50 countries. It was during those years of heavy travel, Cole learned that the industry needed more innovation in the supply of OCTG. This was the start of his passion for harnessing the power of technology in their business. What started as an idea on paper in 2013, has turned into the development of some of the most advanced technology in the world to support the buying and selling of pipe.

Today, as President of CRA, Cole is committed to leading the group of CRA companies into a future defined by sustainability and technological advancements. The unique value provided to their customers come via two vision statements and the supporting companies:

Manufacturing Vision: Be the fastest, most reliable, quality mill provider of corrosion resistant alloy pipe and tube in the world.

Trading Vision: Become the world’s most reliable and trusted source of quality surplus.

Cole continues to be deeply devoted to seeking innovative solutions that contribute to their sustainability goals while creating a positive societal impact. By supporting renewable energy initiatives and promoting a more circular economy, they can drive change that resonates beyond their organizations and leaves a lasting legacy for future generations.

CEOs: Get Your Edge Quickly from Competitor 10-Ks! Birgit Kamps, Board Member, CEO Blindspots® Podcast Host (3 min)

CEOs: Get Your Edge Quickly from Competitor 10-Ks! Birgit Kamps, Board Member, CEO Blindspots® Podcast Host (3 min)

Discover how the right AI tool can quickly help you get an edge, from your competitor's 10-K reports! (3 minute podcast episode).

Claude AI is a generative tool that goes beyond just text generation, to provide leaders wisdom and foresight. It has comprehension and reasoning abilities, large file handling, reduced bias, strategic recommendations, and contextual and predictive analysis capabilities when prompted correctly.

To listen to Birgit's 4-minute podcast episode with the R.O.A.D.S. formula she created to help leaders effectively use AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, and Bard;

https://ceoblindspots.com/ceos-optimize-chatgpt-bard-with-the-r-o-a-d-s-formula-birgit-kamps-board-member-ceo-blindspots-podcast-host-4-min/

To get your edge quickly from competitor 10-K's, by using Claude ai;

Step 1) Open Claude.ai; https://claude.ai/ (and up-grade to the paid version of $20/mo if you plan to use it a lot for large files). And no, I don't get $ from Claude for referring it.

Step 2) Download the 10-K reports you want analyzed via this SEC website under the Edgar tab, and then save them in pdf form, and then up-load them into Claude;

https://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/companysearch

Step 3) Give Claude an effective prompt* after up-loading the pdf files.

*NOTE: Refer to Birgit's R.O.A.D.S. prompting formula in her previous podcast episode (see link above), and/or "copy and paste" the following R.O.A.D.S. prompt referred to in this 3-minute podcast episode, to save time getting the edge you want;

============================================

You are a veteran investor and analyst like Warren Buffett studying these 10-K reports to inform your decision-making.

The analysis is for me and to present findings to my investors, composed of experienced private equity and venture capital leaders ages 40-75.

Please analyze (company name A) and (company name B)'s attached 10-K filings and provide:

- A one page executive summary highlighting the key financial performance, business strategies, and trends for each company based on the 10-Ks. Format this as bullet points.

- A SWOT analysis for each company in a table format, identifying at least 3 strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that emerge from insights in the respective 10-Ks.

- For the SWOT analysis, include clear connections between the 10-K findings and the resulting SWOT factors. For example, a new technology investment highlighted in the 10-K could connect to a "strength" in the SWOT.

- Focus the summary and analysis on providing strategic implications and insights most relevant for the board.

- Exclude the raw financial statements data, instead focusing on high-level performance review and strategic assessment based on the 10-K filings.

Discover how Dave Cook (Executive Director of University of Houston's Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship) learned to lead effectively, when he realized the importance of laughter, and why he thinks every entrepreneur should have multiple mentors (15 minutes).

CEO BLINDSPOTS® PODCAST GUEST: Dave Cook

The Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship in the C. T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston has been named the No. 1 undergraduate entrepreneurship program in the United States for the fourth consecutive year – the longest streak in the program’s history!

The Princeton Review annually ranks nearly 300 U.S. business schools with entrepreneurship programs, evaluating approximately 40 data points, such as experiential learning opportunities, career outcomes, business success and more. Graduates of the Wolff Center cohort program have created 1,640 businesses in the past 10 years and raised more than $400 million. Most students in the program are the first generation in their family to attend college, and more than half are paying their way through school.

“We are delighted with the ranking,” Cook said. “Moreover, every year we are reaching more students, transforming more lives, and adding more mentors from the business community. The focus at the Wolff Center is really about creating leaders and entrepreneurs with the highest integrity, which elevates everyone toward excellence. The focus now becomes, how do we replicate this even further in the community?”

Curtis Hite, CEO of Improving (Inc.500/Best Places Co): "Participate in Trust Pods!" (15 min)

Discover why Curtis (CEO of Improving) has over 1000 employees who participate in trust pods, how he built an Inc. 500 Fastest Growing Private Co and a Best Place to Work Co, and when he discovered his blind spot (15 minutes).

CEO BLINDSPOTS® PODCAST GUEST: Curtis A. Hite.

Curtis is the CEO of Improving. He began his career as a software engineer building systems in the Defense industry – first with Rockwell International and then at E-Systems (later acquired by Raytheon). In 1998, Curtis and several partners founded Expede, a software development consulting and training company. Its quick growth drew the attention of a French company, Valtech, which acquired them in 1999. Curtis soon became CEO of Valtech’s North American operations and remained in that position until late 2006.

In early 2007, Curtis and many of the same partners established the Blue Ocean Group, which quickly acquired a small training company called Improving Enterprises and adopted the Improving name. The company has been blessed with continued growth since then — repeatedly receiving accolades including the Inc500/5000, Dallas 100, and Aggie 100. More importantly, the company has received recognitions from its employees as one of the best work places in Texas as noted by the Dallas Morning News, Dallas Business Journal, and Texas Monthly.

Curtis graduated from Texas A&M University in 1994 with a B.S. and M.S. in computer science. At Texas A&M, he was a member of the Corps of Cadets, serving as commanding officer of Squadron 6 and as a member of the Ross Volunteers. In 2007 Curtis was honored by the Department of Computer Science as a CSE Distinguished Former Student and later in 2013 he received the inaugural Outstanding Early Professional Achievement Alumni Honor Award from the Dwight Look College of Engineering.

3 Ways CEO's Violate EEOC Laws with AI Tools (Workday, Amazon, DHI Group) - 5 min

3 Ways CEO's Violate EEOC Laws with AI Tools (Workday, Amazon, DHI Group) - 5 min

Discover which companies were sued for using AI tools that violated equal employment opportunity laws (EEOC), and how you may remain EEOC compliant while employing AI tools that benefit your company (5 min)!

For more information about the EEOC rules regarding AI; https://www.eeoc.gov/search?search_keywords=Artificial+Intelligence

The EEOC outlined five instances where the use of AI could trigger Title VII violations:

  • resume scanners that prioritize applications using certain keywords;

  • “virtual assistants” or “chatbots” that ask job candidates about their qualifications and reject those who do not meet pre-defined requirements;

  • video interviewing software that evaluates candidates based on their facial expressions and speech patterns;

  • testing software that provides “job fit” scores for applicants or employees regarding their personalities, aptitudes, cognitive skills, or perceived “cultural fit” based on their performance on a game or on a more traditional test; and

  • employee monitoring software that rates employees on the basis of their keystrokes or other factors.

The head of the U.S. agency charged with enforcing civil rights in the workplace says artificial intelligence-driven “bossware” tools that closely track the whereabouts, keystrokes and productivity of workers can also run afoul of discrimination laws.

The federal agency put out its latest set of guidance this week, on the use of automated systems in employment decisions such as who to hire or promote. It explains how to interpret a key provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 known as Title VII that bars job discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion or sex.

Charlotte Burrows, chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, said “What will happen is that there’s an algorithm that is looking for patterns that reflect patterns that it’s already familiar with. It will be trained on data that comes from its existing employees. And if you have a non-diverse set of employees currently, you’re likely to end up with kicking out people inadvertently who don’t look like your current employees.”
