8 Police Officers shot 4 killed in Charlotte
Four officers were killed in a shooting while attempting to serve a warrant at a home in Charlotte, North Carolina, including one deputy US marshal and two local task force officers, authorities say.
A total of eight law enforcement officers were shot during the incident, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said at a Monday evening news conference. He described the shooting as “the most tragic one” he had been involved with in his 32-year-long law enforcement career.
The shooting unfolded in the 5000 block of Galway Drive as members of the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force were serving a warrant for possession of firearm by a convicted felon, Jennings said.

A Back up dancer for P diddy and Toure Speak on his character
Diddy's former backup dancer, Tanika Ray, andTouré, Creative Director at TheGrio, speak out about P diddy's character
The unintended consequences of P Diddy's actions
I wanted to give my spin on the drama this happening with P. Diddy. My comments are these are the unintended consequences of doing evil at a high-level and never thinking that one day you would be brought to account for what you have done. I hope people are looking at this through a spiritual lens because this is the time of exposure and P. Diddy is just the tip of the iceberg of the Domino’s that will fall this year. We’re living in a different time now where everything that has been hidden in the dark will come to the light because time is up For that type of behavior..... pay attention to what’s happening because it may be at our doorstep one day if we don’t stop what we are doing, in our own personal lives .

Introducing The Silva Lining Band's new single "Let Yourself Be Free"
Join host BJ Murphy on the "20 Minute Morning Show Podcast" as he explores the vibrant musical journey of the Silva Lining Band, a unique ensemble that bridges the gap between two culturally rich cities, Lisbon and London. Born in Lisbon and raised in London, this family trio, comprising Nuno, Catarina, and Tiago, infuses their Portuguese roots with English charm to create a musical fusion that's nothing short of extraordinary.
The Silva family motto is clear: "The more, the merrier." This philosophy is mirrored in their debut album, "Lisboa," set to be released on November 10, 2023. The album boasts an impressive ensemble of over 12 musicians spanning a wide spectrum of genres, from Funk to Swing Jazz to Rock. Their latest single, "Let Yourself Be Free," is a glimpse into this musical tapestry, inviting you to move to its rhythm and get lost in its captivating melodies. With a blend of percussion fills and snappy funky brass riffs, this track sets the mood for a night of revelry and dancing with friends.
Written by band co-founder Tiago Silva and produced by João Sanguinheira and Tiago himself, "Let Yourself Be Free" brings together eight talented musicians, each adding their unique energy to the song. The track was born in the wake of a global pandemic, when lockdowns lifted, and the world was yearning for the return of gatherings and celebrations. Tiago's encounters with people and the infectious energy he experienced during these moments inspired this song, which serves as an ode to letting loose and a tribute to hanging out with friends once again.
To capture the essence of the song, a vibrant and lively party was organized and expertly documented by Pedro Salvado. The result was a resounding success, preserving the soul of the song and its message. The Silva Lining Band is all about family and friends uniting to bring their dream of sharing their music with the world to life. A decade in the making, their journey is a testament to their unwavering commitment to their craft and their desire to share their love of music with the world.
Listen to the "20 Minute Morning Show Podcast" with host BJ Murphy to delve deeper into the Silva Lining Band's story, their remarkable music, and their dedication to creating memorable experiences through their art. Enjoy the infectious rhythms and melodies that emanate from this talented family, and witness their ongoing journey to make music that resonates with the world. Malikah Berry Rogers talks about The Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium
ABOUT THE SOUTHERN BLACK GIRLS AND WOMEN’S CONSORTIUM:
Who They Are
The Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium (Southern Black Girls) is a collective of Black women in philanthropy, activism and girls’ work, who hold deep roots in movement-building. Established in 2017, Southern Black Girls has become a disruptor in grant-making and is positioned as a catalyst to fundraise and provide greater resources toward underfunded organizations that, intentionally, support and empower Black girls and women in the South. Southern Black Girls recognizes their critical role and the importance of centering the lived experiences and leadership of those most impacted by deep-seated injustices. The organization is led by four anchor institutions including the Appalachian Community Fund, the BlackBelt Community Foundation, the Fund for Southern Communities and the TruthSpeaks Innovation Foundation. The collective also includes a host of grassroots and advocacy partners, who are actively engaging in this work across the region.
The visionary founder of Southern Black Girls is LaTosha Brown, who is also the co-founder of Black Voters Matter.
The executive director of Southern Black Girls is Malikah Berry Rogers, who is the voice that will be speaking on behalf of the organization during today’s interview.
Why They Are
Fed up with reports confirming that Black women and girls receive less than one percent of the $4.8 billion in philanthropic investments in the south, Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium made it their mission to raise $100 million over the next decade to financially empower the goals of Black girls and women. To date, they have already awarded $3.7 million to 221 Black women-led organizations and 504 girls across 13 southern states - Alabama, Arkansas, East Texas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Janet McCullough, owner of Charlotte Spa & Esthetics
Janet McCullough opened Charlotte Spa and Esthetics in 2017, her dream was to help others feel good by teaching them the importance of a good skin routine.
“Skincare is very important. It could make someone have a lack of self-esteem if their skin is not together.
The Texas native decided to open the business after she was laid off from a previous job and realized that she needed to have more than one source of income. (She’s also a licensed insurance agent and a certified revenue cycle analyst for a local healthcare company.) McCullough said she also was inspired by the fact that Americans are getting older, and with aging comes the need for better skin care.
McCullough describes business ownership as a journey.
In 2019, McCullough launched a non-profit called Silent Touch Therapy, an initiative she uses to teach cancer patients about skin care.
“I started thinking about how else could I use my skincare,” she said. “So, I started volunteering with the American Cancer Society — the Look Good, Feel Better program — working with cancer patients on how to care for their skin.

The links between Sierra Leone and the Gullah-Geechee people
Amadu Massally is our guest today. He is the CEO and co-founder of Fambul Tiki and he is from Sierra Leone, a country in West Africa, that is bordered on one side by the Atlantic Ocean. It is known for the white-sand beaches lining the Freetown Peninsula. And also as one that has minerals! The main ones being diamonds, gold, bauxite, rutile, limonite, and iron. We are also blessed with rich fauna and flora and have some unique hippopotamuses, over a hundred bird species, and even rare chimpanzees.
But one of the most interesting things about this country is how it helped to shape some parts of the world via the Transatlantic Slave Trade. And the formation of the capital city, Freetown, it is arguable, one of the most fascinating stories out there with regard to the establishment of capital cities, the world over. It is also the only country in Africa that can clearly show a two-way connection with the Gullah-Geechee people of South Carolina and Georgia to date. Sierra Leone has another two-way connection with the Maroons of Jamaica. We will explore some of those connections on these pages. While this is not well-known today, Sierra Leonean has a two-way connection with Trinidad and Tobago. Carriacou, Grenada; and Halifax, NS are also connections to Sierra Leone that Fambul Tik has explored.

It's How You Handle It: Life's Journey Guest: Eloise Murphy Purdie & Oglivia Purdie Gibson
“At the age of 90, I am birthing my book baby, ‘It's How You Handle It: Life’s Journey.’ While nurturing the contents of my biography, I walked right into a global Covid-19 pandemic. Many people were rudely awakened to find that diseases inside their bodies made them more vulnerable to contracting the virus. Even worst, it was revealed that African Americans were disproportionately more affected due to centuries of systemic inequities. The disregard for our needs caused many unfavorable health conditions called comorbidities, which integrated with the coronavirus and killed people fast and in large numbers. I was at risk because I had almost every pre-condition. My family history could reveal the patterns that led to this moment, but no in-depth stories had/have been written in the history books that I taught from. Now I know why my mother kept telling me stories of my family history, why I kept telling my children these stories, and why I must share with you,” shared Eloise Purdie passionately.
Eloise is faced with life’s ultimatum; reveal her history and the lessons it holds or risk it being lost to the world forever. In her story, “It’s How You Handle It: Life’s Journey,”Eloise tries her best to live to the fullest expression of herself, like her role model, Oprah Winfrey. Oprah said that she used her media career to say how people, "...experience shame, how we love and how we rage, how we fail, how we retreat, persevere, and how we overcome." This book is notably a narrative of perseverance through savage odds. It details the ironic story of Eloise; a history teacher that lived through some of the darkest moments in history but was never able to contribute her life story to the curriculum.
This work started as a simple labor of love but ended up a brilliant blueprint on how to elevate oneself in spite of any circumstance. The candid details she is able to recall decades later are remarkable and it is a unique blessing that God has granted her to keep these stories in such pristine condition. The story of Eloise pays homage to her family and is likely the story of many African Americans during the early 1900s; as they did what they could to recover from an enormous interruption to their rich history and prestige. Following slavery, many African Americans could have sunk under the weight of all that was stripped from them, as well as, the lack of resources, health, wealth, and education. Those, like Eloise, who were able to overcome the unpalatable atrocities of that time, have important stories of determination, foresight, and strength that are important to share.
At our best, we are all teachers. A true teacher at heart, Eloise's story brings the past to life better than any textbook ever could. The truth matters.

Attorney Keith Smith is running for District Court Judge in Mecklenburg County
Keith Smith has served in the state of North Carolina for over 30 years in various roles associated within the legal community. It was early in my career as a Probation Parole Officer, that I first realized my passion to help others in a way that was both fair and equitable while reinforcing accountability. That same commitment to fair-minded decision-making was later applied to my roles as an Assistant DA and as a Senior Associate Attorney with Mecklenburg County’s Department of Social Services. As an elected District Court Judge, I will adhere to the established rule of law while considering all matters in an impartial manner. I value the work ethic instilled in me by my parents who were of humble beginnings, as they stressed the importance of a strong education, but most importantly, treating people with respect and dignity. The justice system in the United States is an incredible forum and I look forward to applying my legal experience as a dedicated and committed public servant for the state of North Carolina.
