S4E10- The Joy and Pain of Telling Stories for a Living
Maybe we’re masochists that love to tell stories or maybe “I’m a believer in the power of knowledge and the ferocity of beauty, so from my point of view, your life is already artful—waiting, just waiting, for you to make it art.” -Toni Morrison
S4E9- I Didn't Know My Body Was Grieving
You get the lyrical point. What I didn’t understand, until I navigated that darkness I mentioned in episode two, was that grief wasn’t limited to losing a loved one. My body was grieving some things that my mind was slow to catch up with. It was a rough few months that I was forever changed by. Well actually bufo (toad venom) and my sister’s death a few years ago, forever changed me, but that darkness was still a seminal moment. This episode features my play cousin, Shaunathan, whom I consider fra-mily, a friend that’s family, who recently lost their mother. There isn’t one way to grieve and we get candid about the multitude of things we’re still grieving.
S4E8- Why I Took my Health More Seriously in my Late 30s
But the story doesn’t actually start there. Let’s just say it did. In my late 30s, I thought I had all the doctors I needed. I didn’t. In this episode, I sit down with my chiropractor, Dr. Phelts, who takes on more of a holistic approach to wellness, and Nikki “Kether” Morgan, a certified, clinical somatic sexologist, who helped me reconnect with my body, after later learning I was dissociated.
S4E7- Trying to Build a Business While Working Full Time
I had illusions of grandeur on this “consulting business” I was going to start during the pandemic after getting laid off. I was introduced to Passion Artis, during her time at Netflix, as she was getting her business, BlaytorBox, off the ground. It was an all too relatable story of having your full time job feed your creative hustle until your creative hustle became your full time.
S4E6- How Being Unemployed Again Humbled Me in my Late 30s
Tonja Stidhum, a writer, director, and producer, whose work I knew from The Root, a Black-centric online magazine, was vocal about her unemployment on Twitter. We connected about navigating the ebbs and flows of our industry (Hollywood), the come to Jesus moment of being unemployed in your late 30s, and the story we were assigning it.
Previously recorded: March 2023
S4E5- Navigating Blackness in White Corporate Spaces
S4E4- The Path to Your Dreams Isn't Linear
Syndicated radio personality, Lenny Green, became a dear friend and unexpected mentor of mine when I moved to Miami for a year and decided to “start over again.” He shared some insight into his journey that also saw an expanded opportunity arrive later in his career.
S4E3- A Traditional Education vs. a Non-Traditional Education
S4E2- Dualities of Being a Black Woman
This solo episode serves as a preview of the nuanced journey I take my guests on, as they open up about their experience navigating their Blackness in various spaces.
Season 4 Extended Trailer
S4E1 Bonus- How This Grammy Winning Songwriter Worked on Beyonce’s Renaissance Album
Season 4 Trailer
Reunited and it feeels so good!
Been gone for almost 2 years and now I'm back with a new and more intentional season, fully rolling out in March.
To whet your appetite until then, this Thursday it was only right to drop my interview with WVZ MFG Publishing and Grammy nominated songwriter, Dave Giles II, the weekend before the Grammys. He reveals the album and the song that earned him his first Grammy nomination. I didn't come to play and neither did my guests. Season 4 is taking you on a ride on what I've been up to the last couple of years with people that were a part of my journey and/or had paralleled nuanced experiences to my journey.
This is Black + Nuanced, like you've never heard me before. Dig in.
S3E22- How DJs Helped Us Overcome a Pandemic
Four scores and two years ago, just kidding. Two years ago (not fully into 2021 yet), I took a leap of faith and moved to South Florida June 2018, taking a $75,000 pay cut. I was making bank in TV production y'all. I believed that strongly in what I was about to do down there. Didn't know that it would rock my world the way it did but so grateful it did and even more grateful for the people that I met.
During my short stint at 99Jamz as a local host for the Rickey Smiley Morning Show, DJ Nasty 305, was one of those people. We formed a bond like no other and he held me down big Leo energy style. This was someone who wore his city on his back, DJ skills and sh*t talking unmatched, and made being a radio personality look and sound so easy. When the pandemic hit, who would've thought DJs to the rescue mentally and emotionally speaking. Not one to mince words, DJ Nasty 305 and I spoke about the state of radio from the talent perspective, if turn-tabling was making a comeback, his thoughts on new DJs, cancel culture as it related to Trina's reported comments last year about protesters, and if he celebrates Valentine's Day and/or Steak and BJ day.
S3E21- Radio Veteran on Running One of the Hottest Stations in Atlanta During a Pandemic
*Formerly recorded in October 2020*
When I decided to leave New York and my career in TV production to venture into commercial radio in South Florida, I didn't know what I was in for. I was just excited for a new change of scenery of growing through the trenches in the gritty. I had also hit a crossroad in TV production. I felt like the one career I walked away from was radio. I had done college radio from 2003-2009 and after several failed attempts of not getting into New York radio (naive and spoiled me), I went to TV.
Fast forward to 2018, I moved to Miami and became the local host of the Rickey Smiley Morning Show when it was on 99Jamz. I met so many dope people including one of my favorite radio veterans and a man I now have the pleasure of calling my former boss, Tap Money. 25 years and counting, this man's approach to nurturing new talent such as myself kept me going through the challenging times. Now he's the program director of Hot 107.9 in Atlanta.
Tap joins me to discuss the challenges and responsibilities of managing a major station in a high profile city dealing with racial injustices, dropping gems on how to break into the industry, and ways he's maintaining his wellbeing.
S3E20- Managing a Black Owned Business During a Pandemic
When Orlando Lima decided to leave his corporate position at Def Jam last year to pursue the spirits industry, he didn't fathom the road ahead aka the pandemic. Having both worked at VH1 where we met, navigating challenges in and out of the corporate space wasn't new to us but what does that look like when the world is on a stand still?
No stranger to the podcast, Orlando shares what entrepreneurial life has looked like because of rona, his thoughts on corporations embracing black culture out of convenience, and ways black men can show up for Black women.
S3E19- Hollywood's New Normal with Director Carl Seaton
TV director Carl Seaton is no stranger to my podcast and when the pandemic hit, we all had to reimagine what content creation looked like as a whole. When we spoke a few months ago, Hollywood was trying to adjust to a "new normal" that had no blueprint. Having worked in TV production for several years, being on set alone could be a cesspool if safety measures weren't implemented properly. Yet in May/June, we were far from seeing any of that come to fruition. Having directed various TV shows like CW's Supergirl and FX's Snowfall, Carl was in the middle of working on an episode when production shut down. Fast forward, Hollywood's still navigating a new space. Carl and I discuss what the TV and film industry will look like post-Covid, how he's managing his wellbeing, and the music era he romanticizes the most.
S3E18- Dallas Mavericks' DJ Poizon Ivy Discusses Breaking Down Walls & Stereotypes
*During the early part of quarantine, DJ Poizon Ivy sat down for my new video series, Black + Nuanced in HD, an extension of my podcast, Black + Nuanced.*
Poizon Ivy is more than what meets the eye and is definitely more than a DJ. A sound strategist for the Dallas Mavericks on a short list of women that have DJ'd for an NBA team, she and I discuss the pressure to succeed growing up in an immigrant family like myself, navigating her career journey of firsts, and self care during rona.
S3E17- Filmmaker Jordan Crafton Talks Working with Nick Cannon, His First Run in with the Cops, & More
*During the early part of quarantine in 2020, Jordan sat down for my new video series, Black + Nuanced in HD, an extension of my podcast, Black + Nuanced.*
I met Jordan during my time at VH1 and Nickelodeon. A renaissance man in his own right, Jordan's story to working as Nick Cannon's director of photography is not for the faint of heart. He and I chopped it up working with Nick, the Dr. Sebi documentary, and his traumatic experience meeting the cops told through his Bedtime Stories clips on Instagram.
S3E16- DJ Domo Discusses Curating Playlists for Apple Music, Her Quarantine Adjustment, & Girlaaa World
*During the early part of quarantine in 2020, DJ Domo sat down for my new video series, Black + Nuanced in HD, an extension of my podcast, Black + Nuanced.*
DJ Domo puts on for the DMV area but her journey hasn't always been easy. We met during Power Rising Conference in 2018. Having been featured on her Women in Radio panel in DC for her company, Girlaaa World, it was only right to follow up with her. We waxed poetic about her story to DJ'ing, the opportunity that led her to curate the DMV playlist for Apple Music, #DontMuteDC campaign, and elevating others through Girlaaa World and other things.
S3E15- When Being a Black Woman is YOUR Superpower
Black women are often forced or expected to self-sacrifice usually to our detriment. It sometimes shows up in motherhood, our careers, and our personal lives. Add a pandemic to the mix and it becomes an entirely different beast.
My next guest is someone who did as she pleased and lived life as she saw fit. When she became a mother, her instinctual nature to protect and provide naturally changed the course of her path but in a transformative way that she didn't expect. Jasmine of the brand Momdrogynous, waxes poetic about the inspiration behind the brand's name, having a natural childbirth, and how she found healing in creating a platform to hold space for other single mothers to feel safe.
S3E14- Navigating A Full Time Job and a Side Hustle During a Pandemic
I met Toine Edwards during my short stint in Miami, as the local host for the Rickey Smiley Morning Show. He was the lead digital producer for all the stations and also the one that trained me. We connected immediately, bonding over our love and reverence for Rickey Smiley, as well as creating digital content. It was so refreshing meeting someone with the same hustle and entrepreneurial spirit that also took time building their own media platform.
During the pandemic, it was only right to circle back on his transition out of Miami to Dallas to become an associate producer of the Rickey Smiley Morning Show and the elevation of his news outlet, Toine360. In our rona edition interview, we discuss Toine's experience working with a mentor like Rickey Smiley, what it's like balancing a full time job with a side hustle, as well as tips he would give other fellow creatives looking to create their own content.
S3E13- Namaste and Rachet Affirmations with Trap Yoga Bae
Our wellbeing, as Black women, has been heightened especially because of rona and Black bodies being killed too consistently. Yet we're still expected to show up as superwomen in all the places we occupy space even when we're exhausted mentally, emotionally, and physically. Lest we forget corporations are now acting like black is in, as if we'll ever go out of style, and wanting to include us in more spaces calling it diversity and inclusion.
It was a no brainer when I was introduced to Britteny's story, who affectionately goes by the name Trap Yoga Bae. On her own journey to wellness and happiness, she studied and practiced yoga eventually putting her own spin on it. She curated a space for us to be our authentic selves, namaste, twerking, and all. From her Trap Tribe to her Ratchet Affirmations, Trap Yoga Bae has built a community and brand on showing up whole. She and I wax poetic about her journey, the power in our voices, insight for other Black women wanting to get in the wellness space, and my remix to the game F**k, Marry, Kill, which I called Sex, Marry, and Throw Away.

S3E12- Love is the New Black
Fresh off my hiatus, the idea of being an alpha women or even presenting as an alpha didn't really take in my mind. I always assumed that I was born this way and attributed it to having big Leo energy and God. As I continued to evolve, I would be told directly or indirectly that I'm intimidating and that I needed to be easy in my personal and professional spaces. My 5’2 energy is intimidating? TUH! My first episode back after an unintentional busy month, thank God, was to have real ass conversations around how black women have been taught to show up and how we now have to show up. I reached out to some dope ass women in my life that are alpha presenting in their careers especially and we got into all of the things plus #BlackIsKing, and black love. We took ourselves to church. Amen.

S3E11- Talk to Me Nice (Insecure season 4 finale spoilers)
HBO's Insecure season 4 finale left us feeling some kind of way. I wanted to check in with my former guest co-hosts that helped me deliberate on various themes mid-season. The finale just hit differently though. We explored the highs and lows of what happened with Lawrence and Issa [hint: it involved Canola Oil aka Condola], Andrew being sick and tired of Molly's shit, and how they addressed various issues we deal with in the Black community including mental health and postpartum. The finale answered some things but left other things in limbo. Will Issa want to work things out with Lawrence? Will Lawrence still take the job in San Fran? Is Nathan going to shoot his shot or keep it friendly and will Latoya come up missing dead or alive? All the questions.
The finale also inspired conversation around things we need to normalize and not normalize while I romanticized about Black love. Whew, a bevy of emotions but grateful to my guests and you all for tuning in.

S3E10 #RonaEdition- Let's Talk OnlyFans + Polyamory
This week is a special release and celebration of my podcast releasing 50 episodes. I wanted to lighten but spice things up while trying to understand the allure of OnlyFans before it became associated with Demon Time (#IYKYK) and adult entertainment.
OnlyFans is a subscription based website for creators to privately share their content for a fee. Patreon does the same thing. I'm on Patreon but my guest Wize Grazette, founder of the Indie Creative Network, took his content to OnlyFans, "tik tok when I dance." He and I had an interesting conversation dissecting the difference between the two since he's used both, whether the stigma of OnlyFans hurts or helps his business, him being in a three year polyamorous relationship (felt like this became Insecure's show within a show), and the difference in having boundaries versus rules in relationships.
I also have new video content on the way that will drop on Patreon first so subscribe at the link below.

S3E8 #RonaEdition- #blackAF critiques...are still because of slavery
My fellow Leo, Kenya Barris, has been making waves before his latest Netflix deal with network shows, black-ish, grown-ish (facking love), mixed-ish, Girls Trip, Top Model (had no idea), and the upcoming Coming to America 2 just to name a few. Even if you're not a fan of his former or current work, his shows are still household hits. MAMA WE MADE IT!
Fast forward to his Netflix show, #blackAF, a mockumentary styled series, starring himself and loosely based on his family. Hate or love it, there's been a lot of conversations and I decided to chat about some of the recurring themes that have been criticized.
I called on previous guest co-hosts and friends, Darnell Walker, a TV writer and filmmaker, and TJ Smith, an educator, activist, and a thought partner around diversity, equity, and inclusion, to help me deliberate on the critiques of anti-blackness and colorism, the idea of Rashida Jones not being Black enough/quantifying blackness, and Black creators having to hold the weight of being the authoritative voice all hues of Black people. In short, everything was/still is because of slavery. Personally, I couldn't get enough of the show but I want to hear from you so press play and email me below.

S3E7 #RonaEdition- Rona Reflections
Life as a freelancer at a media company has been a wild ride. The last thing we expected was to be out of work for two months [two of us sheltering outside of Nueva York]. Needless to say we've been dealing with this the best way we know.
My ladies and former colleagues from the TV production world decided to join me as we remixed our monthly dinner dates in New York before rona to a podcast episode. We waxed poetic about the things we working on before rona, adjusting to being quarantined, coming out of rona, the pressure to be productive during these difficult times especially as a freelancer, and what this new chapter looks for us. It's not enough to say we need to keep each other encouraged. We must also act on it.

S3E6 #RonaEdition- Why You Acting All IN-SEC-URRRR (Insecure spoilers)
Issa Rae has been kicking ass with her media empire including her successful HBO show, Insecure. We love to see it especially learning that the show was renewed for a season five. #LawrenceHive is buzzing around somewhere.
There were so many themes that happened in the first few episodes that I couldn’t resist talking about with my fellow avid watchers. My fabulous friends, Chris and Stephanie, join me this week to discuss all of the things including being friend's with someone dating your ex, the communication breakdown between Molly and Issa, which is hard to watch, ghosts coming back in the picture (Nathan and that voicemail), Molly’s Asian bae, and so much more. We also reference the conversation between Lawrence and Tiffany’s husband that didn’t sit well with some of the twitterverse and I’m not mad. Spoiler alerts if you’re not caught up.

S3E5 #RonaEdition- Give Me a Bunx
Creating in the time of rona as an artist and producer takes the cake for this week’s episode. Some artists are presumed struggling but others are thriving including my high school friend. High school y’all! This week, I’m joined by artist, creator, producer, just all overall dope human, Bunx Dadda. He’s produced for some of your favorite artists including Kali Uchis, Chris Brown, and more. He joins me from the LA (Los Angeles) to discuss the shift in his music career, getting back to his roots, defining his sound as an artist and producer, and how he’s staying inspired during the times of rona. S3E4 #RonaEdition- a time, place, and platform for everything
When Twitter and Instagram were created in 2006 and 2010 respectively, no one fathomed [at the time] that a person would be able to make millions off of said platforms. At least I didn’t. Fast forward, now we have people getting to the money in a real way. But what about creating during the time of #rona as an influencer? For some of us, it has been a struggle for our own personal projects especially for me BUT not for those who depend on content creation as part of their livelihood.
Enter Stephen Williams, known by his YouTube subscribers as American Boy, and natural hair influencer, Alana Simone, better known as ina90skindofworld on Instagram. *Hey Google, cue Living Single’s theme song.* Both of them have cultivated their brand into a business on their respective platforms for at least two years and counting.
This week’s episode explores the misperceptions of being an influencer, their holy sh*t moment of social media becoming a business for them, and how they handle the criticism of their own work. We also unpack the criticism of black art in white spaces as it related to Swizz Beatz and Timbaland’s #Verzuz series rematch with Teddy Riley and Babyface that went down on Instagram Live earlier this week. Just in case you missed it, they had half a million people on the gram reminiscing before it stopped working. Talk about breaking the internet. We did that.

S3E1 #RonaEdition- When the World Stops Ending
Season three is back in full effect. It only took 7-8 months but it's the effort that matters especially during these unprecedented times. On this #RonaEdition of Black + Nuanced, the one and only penultimate writer, world traveler, filmmaker, Darnell Walker joins me to discuss catching and surviving the rona in NYC, his life's work, and our thoughts on wypipo trying to deem #Karen as a racial slur.
