Case Consult w/ Dr. Leila Ellis-Nelson

Case Consult w/ Dr. Leila Ellis-Nelson

Hey yall! It's been a minute! I don't know about you, but this summer has been full of change and adjustments that have affected our ability to get episodes out to you in a timely and consistent manner. But you know what? That's okay! We've been practicing some self-care and boundary setting that has taken precedence over releasing on our desired schedule. That said, we gone try to be better. AND the icing on the cake is that we'll occasionally be releasing episodes called "Case Consults" to explore what it's like for PoC professionals in this field doing THE work. This first case consult is with my dear friend and sister in the ministry (lol), Dr. Leila Ellis-Nelson. Listen to us talk about the amazing work that she's doing in this field to bring equity and inclusion into all of the diversity efforts sought out by the organizations she works with. Leila unpacks the limitations of the DSM in a way that is both enlightening and frustrating, but so necessary to further understanding the mental health field. I'm excited for yall to learn something because EVERY single time this woman opens her mouth, you can't help but be impacted by her knowledge and ability to communicate it in ways that we can ALL benefit from and understand. Make sure those earbuds are charged tf up, because you can't afford to miss this sermon

Session 12 - Jojo

Welcome back, family! This week we sit down with Jojo who shares with us some insight into his search process and criteria for finding an effective therapist. He discusses how vulnerability can be tough, but also speaks to the rewards that can come from accepting challenges throughout the process and recognizing how his commitment to therapy directly impacts his ability to sit with tough feedback, feelings, and challenges in session. Jojo ventures into some REAL TALK and truly opens himself up so that we can understand more about what our own mental health and therapy journeys could potentially look like--and for that, we are grateful! Session 11 - Ayanna

Session 11 - Ayanna

This week, we’re getting into Ayanna’s healing journey that has included therapy at an age as young as 8 years old, the unexpected development of a phobia anxiety disorder, and the positive impact of having parents who were just as determined as she was when it came to finding an effective & supportive therapist. If there’s one persistent truth throughout this session, it’s that our families/communities play such an important role in our movement towards well-being. SO, take off yo shoes and relax yo feet as Ayanna reminds us that the simple act of making space for our most authentic selves can be all of the self-care that we need.

Session 10 - Sanniel

Y'all! It's been a YEAR, but we made it, didn't we? Season 2 kicks off with the amazing, resilient Sanniel! You'll want to listen closely as he shares his experiences of assimilating into American culture when his family left the D.R. and how this impacted his relationship with himself, his mental health, his queer, Afro-Latinx identity, and his determination to find healing amidst a lack of shared identities with his therapists. Sanniel talks about the importance of holding folx accountable and being proactive in therapy so that we can experience the love and care that we ALL deserve.  Sanniel's Plugs: (Non-affiliated but loves the cause) For the Gworls - "We raise 💵 to assist w/ BLACK TRANSGENDER folks’ rent & gender affirmative surgeries." Session 9 - WE WILL NOT BE SILENT

Session 9 - WE WILL NOT BE SILENT

*TRIGGER WARNING* This episode contains sensitive and emotional content that might stir up unexpected feelings and emotions in listeners. Please listen with your own discretion.

In this 9th session of Black People Go To Therapy, Too, we put aside our normal agenda--and instead allow for our Black Community to speak out about what they're feeling. You'll hear pain, you'll hear fear, you'll hear anger, and you'll know that the continual disregard for black bodies is a practice that runs as deep as our roots. If we sound fed up, it's because we are. If we sound exhausted, it's because we are.

But despite all of these things, we have our strength. We have our community. We still have our voice.

(Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, all of you who participated and shared so much vulnerability. We're louder because of you

Born and bred on the West Coast, you'll hear what life was like for him as he developed his own understanding of who he is and how he exists in this world.
Throw in those earbuds, 'cause we're ready to share another story with you all!

Session 7 - Aaron R.

AYE YALL!!! Just checking in...how you feelin'? All things considered, we here at Black People Go To Therapy, Too hope that you're taking care of yourselves and navigating this pandemic as safely as you can, because not only do we need you, but the world does, too. Ok??

In light of what's going on in the world, we feel even more compelled to continue to share the stories of PoC folx and their mental health journeys. Take Aaron, for instance, who shares about his own growth in the way that he has learned to express himself as a black man. Take a walk with us while we learn from his amazing, yet unique, perspective about how he's conquered his "big Libra energy"  and replaced it with more self-compassion and patience for himself.

Take a break from what you're doing, lay back, and listen for some tools you can incorporate in your own lives! Chances are we need them now, more than ever!
