Parenting in the African Diaspora: Did Our Parents Get It Right?

Parenting in the African Diaspora: Did Our Parents Get It Right?

In this virtual panel discussion, we talked about a number of things we felt we didn’t have growing up such as the lack of open communication with our parents, assuming parental responsibilities as children, and the lack of affection. We discussed how these things have impacted us as adults and as parents and how we plan on being more intentional in our own parenting.

On The Black Student Experience While Studying Abroad (w/ Doria Wormbly)

I'm joined by Doria Wormbly as she discusses her experiences being the only Black student in her study abroad group and the challenges that she faced as a result of that. She is committed to shining light on the importance of diversifying international education programs on the student side as well as in program leadership and she discusses different ways that this could be done starting with providing additional funding and other resources to traditionally underrepresented students of color to prepare them before and during their study abroad travels.

To attend her free webinars on grant writing, please email The Sailor Justice Project (sailorjusticeproject@gmail.com) for more information.

On Navigating the Immigrant Experience: Overcoming Ongoing Residency Battle (w/ Omba Thomas)

I'm joined by a dear friend and sister, Omba Tejan-Thomas, whom I have known for 20 years or so as we attended the same church when we first came to the country as young children. She talks about her experience coming to the U.S. at the age of 8 from the Democratic Republic of Congo and how her family had to assimilate to a new culture, leading to culture loss and feelings of identity crisis, being classified as a refugee, as well as other challenges related to navigating the immigrant experience. After discovering that she was a DACA student before graduating from high school along with the fear of deportation looming over her head, she had to postpone her education and focus on family. In May 2022, Omba completed her Masters in Health Administration and after 32 years of being in the States, she now has her permanent residency. She discusses how her faith in God helped her throughout her journey as well as key organizations in the Charlotte area that supported her in the immigration process. She concludes by sharing what she's learned about herself throughout this journey and her confidence in who she is today.

Pt. 2: On The Journey of Motherhood: Healing After Child Loss (w/ Mercy Akinwande)

TW: baby loss, pregnancy loss

After nearly 7 years of marriage and 11 pregnancies, I'm joined by Mercy Akinwande as she shares her struggles with infertility on the journey to motherhood. In honor of May being mental health awareness month, one of the reasons why we had this conversation was to try to eliminate or reduce stigmas associated with sharing about difficulties conceiving, going through pregnancy loss, and postpartum depression in our community through open conversations about each individual's personal challenges and how to overcome them. She also spoke on the importance of speaking up for yourself, being knowledgable about your rights as a patient, asking questions to your healthcare provider team, and other lessons learned through her experience.

On Being Raised African in America: Double or Triple Consciousness (#SabiSunday w/ @igboclassauntychi)

In this bonus episode, I was interviewed by Chinwe of Aunty Chi's Igbo Class (@igboclassauntychi). We shared a light discussion about my experiences being raised with African, specifically Nigerian, upbringing in the United States, and how I feel that growing up with these multiple cultural identities have shaped my worldview today. I highlighted the importance of young people being intentional about studying their native languages and cultural heritages and expressed my appreciation to all those that are championing efforts to teaching African languages, especially my mother tongue, Igbo.  Stay tuned for a more in-depth discussion when she and I chat again!

Reflections - What’s In A Name?

Reflections - What’s In A Name?

In this (relatively short) episode, I highlight some of the things I am excited about at the moment, such as finishing grad school and the audiobook narration I'm currently working on titled A Mother's Promise: A Civil War Survivor and Her Pursuit of the American Dream. I also discuss the importance of names as it relates to our cultural heritage, reflect on the 11 years since my dad's passing and how that has molded my perception of the world, and close with gratitude. Thank you for listening!

On Navigating Racial Prejudice As A Black Man in America (w/ Rev. Stefan Weathers)

In this episode, I'm joined by my good friend and brother, Rev. Stefan Weathers Sr., to discuss his experiences living as a black man in America from his first police encounter as a teenager coming home from school, to the legacy of policing and slavery, the need for reallocating police funds, the importance of having representation in the classroom, in positions of leadership, and elsewhere, and what that means for young black and brown children, and the differences of perspectives he has from growing up in what is called the New South to now living and raising a young family in the North.   Check out his website here: https://www.stefanweathers.com/in-my-ancestors-dreams

African Women Panel: A Conversation Between Sisters

African Women Panel: A Conversation Between Sisters

In this panel discussion, I'm joined by 4 lovely women from different parts of the African continent and we discuss our experiences as African women as it relates to our cultural identity, how we see ourselves as Black African women within the conversations surrounding black lives matter, what it would take to have a truly unified Africa, things we saw our mothers doing growing up that we would like to discontinue in our generation, colorism in our communities, finding our voice as African women after being raised mostly to be quiet about our feelings, and we close by giving advice to young ladies on what we have learned over the years.

On Finding Your Voice As An African Woman (w/ Yar and Amek Barkeui)

On Finding Your Voice As An African Woman (w/ Yar and Amek Barkeui)

In this episode, I had the opportunity to speak with two lovely sisters, Yar and Amek, and we discussed what it means to find your voice as an African woman. In the process, we highlighted so many of our similar experiences as African women even though we are from different parts of the Continent and different ethnic and cultural groups. We talked about why women are pressured into marriage once they get in their 20s and 30s, what it means to be a "good woman", and why we as African women feel that much of our existence is based on living for others and not ourselves and what we are doing to change some of these things for the future generation. Yar also shared why she started her platform, The Women of the Sudans.

[Segment] On the Age Old Divide Between Africans and African-Americans

[Segment] On the Age Old Divide Between Africans and African-Americans

This was a segment from a social justice seminar we had in our church’s young adult group that I was honored to be one of the panelists. I will post the video link here once it’s made available. I discussed the origin of African immigrants to the United States, the need for unity amongst members of the diaspora as it relates to tackling the issue of racism, and the civil rights movement and the role of the church.

On Birth and Motherhood in the U.S. & the U.K. and Mental Health Awareness, Pt. 2 (w/ Janet Jamesy)

In this episode, I'm joined by Janet Adeola Jamesy who was born in Nigeria, raised in the U.S., and now lives in the U.K. with her husband and small children. We discuss the differences in her experiences giving birth in the U.S. and in the U.K. and on raising her children in the U.K. She also discusses the importance of taking care of your mental health during and post-pregnancy (and in general). Janet started ReelMums to highlight more content on conception, prenatal, pregnancy, and postpartum care from the perspective of moms of color, as well as highlight those moms who are homeschooling their children. One of the major reasons why she felt the need to start this platform was to showcase these women who weren't adequately represented on the other platforms she followed. As we always say, representation matters!

On Issues Affecting Our People At Home and Abroad (w/ Dessay Brown)

On Issues Affecting Our People At Home and Abroad (w/ Dessay Brown)

In this episode, I'm joined by Dessay Gray-Brown. We discuss what it means to be an African in America, especially at a time like this, with police brutality and the rise of racial tensions under the current administration. We also discuss perceptions of the American dream for family members back in our respective home countries and how the realities are different. We highlight the importance of passing down our cultural heritage to the next generation, talk about coronavirus and how it's causing tensions for Africans living in China, and ways that African governments should respond to these challenges and how they have failed us in many ways.

On Black Birth Experiences and Black Maternal Health Awareness, Pt. 1 (w/ Tise Karunwi)

On Black Birth Experiences and Black Maternal Health Awareness, Pt. 1 (w/ Tise Karunwi)

In this episode, I'm joined by a friend of mine, Tise Karunwi. She's a loving wife, a mother to two handsome boys, and she's a nurse. We discuss the very important issue of black maternal mortality in the United States. According to the CDC, black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related issues than white women. This is partly why the maternal mortality rate in the U.S. is the worst in any industrialized country. We discussed the importance of having a birth plan and how to set one up, knowing your rights as a patient, her thoughts on the rise in popularity of black doulas and midwives, the necessary trainings that white healthcare professionals need to have to better deal with patients from different cultural backgrounds, among other topics.
**You can check out her Pregnancy to Delivery series on her YouTube Channel: Tise Kay (https://youtu.be/32c3y6vSZik) and follow her on Instagram: @tise_kay **
To our listeners, how was your birth experience like? Did you have a negative birth experience as a black mother that you think was based on any form of racial discrimination? What happened? What do you wish could have been done differently, or what would you do differently in a future pregnancy, or what would you recommend to any soon-to-be moms?

On Identity and Sense of Community in the African Diaspora (with Azubuike Nwadei)

I am joined by another one of my good friends, Azubuike Nwadei, and we will be discussing identity in our community as African-Americans, as Nigerian-Americans, as Igbo-Americans, and as Biafrans.  We discuss what each of these hyphenated identities means to us at different points of our lives, the concept of home, our experiences growing up - good or bad - that shaped us and our interactions with different members of the diaspora, at what point being African became "cool" or acceptable to us, and some of our hopes for the future as it relates to the kind of lives we want our children to have different from our own upbringings.
