Tonight, I have a real treat to share with you! It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories; I’ve done several here on the channel already. I find that as I get older and revisit these stories, I appreciate them more and more, and find new things that delight and impress me each time I read them! I also find I can connect to the stories themselves more easily as my experience in the world grows. Allow me to set the stage for this story: A great and terrible disease—called the Red Death-- is sweeping across a medieval land. The prince of this land has decided that, rather than give aid of any kind, he would rather call up his closest…erm, 1000 friends, and wall all of them inside a secluded abbey. No one can get in, and no one can get out. There, they plan to party and wait it out, while the disease rages outside. All is well; the wine is flowing, the guests are dancing and mingling at an opulent masquerade ball, until a new guest arrives, dressed horribly as a victim of the Red Death. This story is called “The Masque of the Red Death”, and was written by Edgar Allan Poe.

Tonight, we’ll take a relaxing walk along the beach!

Our story opens as a young man takes a pause during his run down by the ocean.

As he decides to head back resume his routine, he meets 2 young ladies. They warn him to stay away from the water at low tide, because there have been many disappearances over the years as the tide has rolled out.

Of course, he dismisses their warning at first. But he quickly becomes a believer, when the first hand grabs his ankle from within the mud.

Most certainly! But I’ll remind you that not all information is safe, and some doors of knowledge should stay closed.

It’s not uncommon to project your fears or trauma into the world around you, and sometimes even SEE things from your imagination. But what if…. Those things you see grow MORE tangible, and not less? What if the things you think you see in the dark, could hurt you?

Tonight, instead of keeping you awake, I thought it might be nice to completely turn this thing on its head, and read you some sweet classic short stories by a fire! You may have heard these stories before, but if you haven’t, you’re in for a treat! First is the The Gift of the Magi, written by O’ Henry. It’s a humorous tale of the sacrifices we make for those we truly love. After that, we’ll hear one I discovered just this year: A Christmas Dream, written by Louisa M. Alcott. It’s the story of a little girl who comes to appreciate what she has and learns the wonder of giving to others through a fantastic dream on Christmas Eve, and a special surprise the following day. Finishing the collection, we’ll hear that familiar poem—A Visit from St.Nicholas, written by Clement Clarke Moore.

Usually I like to reappear after the stories for a final word, but tonight you’ll hear no more from me after this. After our stories, we shall hear a few hours of the sound of wind and snow outside the window, as we snuggle deeper under the blankets and sleep soundly.
