Blood and Black Rum Podcast - A Cult Film / Horror Podcast

By Ryne Barber

We're two guys covering all kinds of cult films from horror to action and everything in between. We try to bring funny and engaging content with our unique personalities, and we also review beer in each episode as well. Some of our past and present coverage includes Halloween specials, series retrospectives, Difficult Films month, Red Hot '80s Action Summer, '90s remakes, and a lot more. It's a pretty eclectic mix here, but if you're into cult films and beer, this is the place to be.

ASTEROID CITY

ASTEROID CITY

We've been fans of Wes Anderson for some time, so we thought we were about due for a new episode on his most latest output, Asteroid City. Here we talk about how the film further expands the border of Wes Anderson-isms, being a natural extension of The French Dispatch, the meta-contextual elements, the massive cast, and the bloat that sometimes creeps up in Anderson's most recent films. We're also drinking Ommegang's Farm Fresh Ale, Honey Conditioned!

LEPRECHAUN: ORIGINS

LEPRECHAUN: ORIGINS

Happy St. Patrick's Day! We're continuing our journey through the Leprechaun series with a look at the WWE Studios reboot Leprechaun: Origins starring Hornswoggle as the titular horror character. The biggest thing about this movie is the fact that it is so generic and unmemorable, and we struggle to put into words just how humdrum the whole thing is. We're also drinking Sloop Brewing Co.'s (No) Green Beer NEIPA!

STARSHIP TROOPERS

STARSHIP TROOPERS

With all the success of Helldivers 2, we thought it would be appropriate to finally cover Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers on our show. This has all of the things you've come to know from the director: parodical elements, propaganda pieces, ultragore, and a healthy satirical take on fascism. We talk about all of this plus the Dina Meyer/Costas Mandylor connection! We're also drinking Sierra Nevada's new 19.2 oz Cosmic Little Thing double hazy IPA.

FOXY BROWN

Happy Black History Month! We of course wanted to celebrate this occasion with another blaxploitation movie since we haven't done all that many on the show. Here, we take on Foxy Brown, released one year after Pam Grier's classic Coffy and featuring a lot of the same themes. We talk about the more exploitative elements in the film, the zany inclusion of certain scenes, and of course the sultry Pam performance. We're also drinking Brooklyn Brewing's collaboration with Four Roses Distilling, the Black Ops Imperial Barrel Aged Stout.

17 years after its release, Ryne finally gets to see the movie that spawned one catchphrase about milkshakes. We talk about this fantastic picture from Paul Thomas Anderson, including the overall throughlines of the film including capitalism and religion, the score, put on our best Daniel Day-Lewis impressions, and a lot more. We're rounding out Dry January with Guinness 0, their non-alcoholic beer that actually is not 0%.

DJANGO

We knew we wanted to do a spaghetti western, but after a misfire - we picked a movie we already did, and we'll explain - we decided on the originator of all of those Django westerns. Here we talk about Franco Nero as the protagonist, the machine gun, how this relates to A Fistful of Dollars and Django the Bastard, and of course, Maria! Chaberting Gifts (5) WINTER IN VAIL

Sorry for the late episode due to the holidays, but we're finishing our Chaberting Gifts series for this holiday season with a look at the generically winter-themed Winter in Vail starring Lacey Chabert as... an event planner again. Yes, we've covered similar movies in the Hallmark output this season, and we discuss all of the great things that make this movie tick including the lack of touching, the Strudelfest shenanigans, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Beer Tree Brewing's Pils by a Billion Pilsner to celebrate the Buffalo Bills and football Sunday.

Chaberting Gifts (4) A CHRISTMAS MELODY

Chaberting Gifts (4) A CHRISTMAS MELODY

For our last episode before Christmas, we're taking on the unicorn of Lacey Chabert Christmas Hallmark movies: one that has a child's talent show, romance, and MARIAH CAREY! That's right - in 2015 the Queen of Christmas herself directed and "starred" in this Hallmark movie about a little girl writing the song "Oh Santa!" for her talent show performance. It's about as hilarious as you'd expect, and we talk about Mariah's acting, the limited Christmas hijinks, and of course the Folgers Coffee shining performance. We're also drinking Founders' Porter!

We continue our Lacey Chabert Christmas Hallmark movie journey with Christmas at Castle Hart, which this time transports us to Ireland for a meet-cute between Lacey's event planner character and an earl of Ireland! Chaberting Gifts (2) HAUL OUT THE HOLLY

On our second episode of Chaberting Gifts, we take a look at 2022's Haul Out the Holly, a shameless rip of Christmas with the Kranks that sees Lacey Chabert heading home for the holidays only to butt heads with her parents' HOA. This is a bizarre Christmas tale that is extremely light on romance, while at the same time offering a weird theme that maybe, just maybe you'll start to like your overbearing HOA if you just get used to it. We talk about all of this and more on this special Christmas episode. We're also drinking Ommegang's OMG Series Everything Naughty white chocolate blonde stout!

Our Christmas season is going to be a little different this year; that's because we're bringing you a holiday full of Lacey Chabert in Hallmark Christmas movies. We start off by visiting Roma in Christmas in Rome, a yuletide tale of a travel agent meet-cuting with a property mogul hoping to land a big acquisition in Rome. Happy Thanksgiving! As a special release on Thanksgiving Day, we're bringing you an episode on Eli Roth's new film Thanksgiving, influenced by his own trailer for the Grindhouse films in 2007. We talk about making a feature-length film out of short schlock, the gory details, whether these characters are even relatable, and a whole lot more in this special Turkey Day feast. MEAN GIRLS

It's serendipitous that as we decided to finally do our episode on Mean Girls, Walmart released a Black Friday ad getting (most of) the gang back together, as well as an announcement for a new movie based on the musical in 2024. While we're just one year early from the film's 20th anniversary, we decided the time is nigh - we have a lot of fun covering this deeply nostalgic movie for millenials, talking about how it holds up in terms of school representation, true bullying, and a whole lot more. Also, we've got KCBC's Mean Squirrels DDH Hazy IPA to complete the tie-ins!

We're ending our Halloween season with a look at the nostalgia-driven Goosebumps movie from 2015, which finds R.L. Stine's classic monsters coming to life thanks to his magical writing. Halloweenies II (8) THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER

While The Exorcist: Believer is not technically a Halloween film, it is an annual tradition to eviscerate a David Gordon Green film, so it's certainly appropriate for the season. Here we talk about the extremely mediocre requel to The Exorcist, which manages to have double the amount of possessed kids and half the scares and fun. We talk about the movie's excruciating pacing, the lack of any suspense, the omnipresence of nurses, and a lot more on this raucous episode. We're also drinking Leinenkugel's Red Lager!

Halloweenies II (7) HOCUS POCUS

Nostalgia is a strange beast, and we take on Hocus Pocus, one of Halloween's most iconic films, in an attempt to discuss both the reasons why it might be considered a classic as well as whether it truly should be. Both of us have a middling view of the movie, noting that it has merit but also makes a number of missteps. Have a listen and see if you agree! Halloweenies II (6) SAW X

We have previously covered every film in the Saw series as part of a Halloween season and each subsequent release, and Saw X is no different; however, the more surprising thing about this new film in the franchise is that it's one of the best ones in recent memory! While the film still has its issues - ones we readily point out throughout this episode - we acknowledge that the return to simplicity by going back to a time period between the first and second Saw movies is a welcome addition to the series. We talk about the traps (of course), Tobin Bell in a much more prevalent role, the Mexico City setting, and a whole lot more on this extended episode. We're also drinking 1911's Double Double Toil and Trouble Candy Corn Cider!

Halloweenies II (5) TRICK OR TREAT

No, we're not talking about the anthology film; this one's the heavy metal banger from 1986, featuring a killer able to come through stereo systems using his satanic backwards record to wreak havoc on a teen during Halloween. We talk about the film's relative lack of Halloween atmosphere, which feels more like an afterthought; we also marvel at the new call waiting technology, rag on the "teens" of this high school, and speculate where parents in Halloween movies go for their parties. We're also drinking Paulaner's Oktoberfest Bier.

Halloweenies II (4) WNUF HALLOWEEN SPECIAL

We're tackling a different kind of film today during our Halloween celebration. WNUF Halloween Special is a film near and dear to a lot of people's hearts thanks to its very nostalgic presentation of TV from yesteryear, mimicking news broadcasts, live Halloween shenanigans akin to Ghostwatch, and a near endless supply of spot-on commercials. We try to talk about this movie in three parts - the ads, the news broadcast, and then the actual events of the Halloween special. We go over our favorite commercials, the best moments of the movie, compare Frank to Ryne's uncle, and a lot more. We're also drinking Von Trapp Brewing's Oktoberfest!

Halloweenies II (3) TERRIFIER

Halloweenies II (3) TERRIFIER

Continuing our slate of Halloween episodes, we take a look at the gory practical-effects laden horror film Terrifier from 2016. Prior to the hubbub over Terrifier 2, Damien Leone's slasher flick starring Art the Clown came and went with little fanfare. Here we talk about the relative lack of a plot, the torture porn elements and how they mesh with the film's admittedly sinister opening sequence, and how the film loses its footing about halfway through and starts a dive into ridiculous territory. We're also drinking Sierra Nevada's new 2023 Oktoberfest brewed in collaboration with Kehrwieder Brewery.

Halloweenies II (2) ERNEST SCARED STUPID

On this edition of Halloweenies II, we're diving into a nostalgic classic that neither of us has seen in decades: Ernest Scared Stupid! While there's no arguing the film isn't that great, the Halloween atmosphere and lovable nature of Ernest P. Worrell (Jim Varney) means that there are definitely some endearing qualities in this decidedly dumb movie. We talk about the many faces of Ernest, the use of trolls as the film's monster, milk carton grenades, the un-Disneyfication of this surprisingly violent output, and more! We're also drinking Hacker-Pschorr's Oktoberfest marzen!

Welcome back to another year of our Halloween specials! This time around, we're covering more movies that actually take place on or around Halloween. First up is The Houses October Built, a found-footage film about a group of documentarians trying to find the most extreme haunt possible. Red Hot '80s Action Summer Part III: Back to Duty (4) THE ROAD WARRIOR

For our last episode of this year's Red Hot '80s Action Summer, we're taking a look at George Miller's iconic film The Road Warrior (or Mad Max 2), a full-throttle action film which set the precedent for post-apocalyptic wasteland thrillers. The stunts, crashes, and fuel-guzzling chase sequences are a wonder, and we talk about all of these in detail as well as this as a precursor to Mad Max: Fury Road (see our previous episode), the assless chaps, whether Lord Humungus is really all that bad of a guy, and a lot more. Red Hot '80s Action Summer Part III: Back to Duty (3) THE DELTA FORCE

More summer, more action with this episode of Red Hot '80s Action Summer in which we return to Chuck Norris' jingoistic movies about war. This time we're looking at The Delta Force, a sometimes comical take on a real plane hijacking by Palestinians in 1985. Of course, it wouldn't be a Chuck film without shooting, missiles, and a lot of ridiculous music. We talk about the length of the film (over 2 hours!), the relative lack of action for the first hour, the overbearing score, and a lot more. Red Hot '80s Action Summer Part III: Back to Duty (2) POLICE STORY 2

Sorry for the late episode! Red Hot '80s Action Summer continues with a look at the sequel to Jackie Chan's fantastic Police Story, and this time, there's a bomb! Sorry - I should say multiple bombs, since this movie is basically a barebones plot about extortion with bombers without much motive. We talk about the lack of an engaging plot, the stuntwork that is a little less exciting than the first film, the overall goofier tone of this one, the portrayal of its "deaf" character, and a lot more! Red Hot '80s Action Summer is back, and this time we're back to duty with a look at Arnold Schwarzenegger's classic 1985 flick Commando! In true action movie fashion, Schwarzenegger's character has his daughter kidnapped by communists and he's got to get her back! We talk about the film's fast-paced construction, the ridiculous stunts throughout, the generic massive gunfight at the end of the film, and a whole lot more. In true Blood and Black Rum fashion, we dive into some '90s nostalgia with an episode centered on the 1995 film Clueless. A precursor to Mean Girls, this film hits mostly the right notes of a fun high school flick, and we talk about the many big-name actors, the similarities and differences to other '90s rich-person flicks like Cruel Intentions, the stuffed musical score, and a whole lot more! THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE

THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE

It's not quite time for the creepy season yet, but we wanted to get a jumpstart (and a jump scare) with 2016's The Autopsy of Jane Doe, which is a movie that packs a wallop with a nude body that doesn't actually do anything and yet still maintains its eerieness. We talk about Andre Ovredal's atmosphere throughout, the clinical way that this film picks apart the dead, the supernatural witch elements that pepper the film later on, and a whole lot more. KaiJune (5) | THE BLOB (1988)

To end our KaiJune festivities, we turn to a remake of a classic '50s American horror film that, in our eyes, crosses over in similarity to traditional kaiju films. The Blob is revitalized in this violent, practical effects-laden movie about teenagers attempting to stop a giant monstrosity that continues to grow as it feeds on townspeople, and here we talk about the large cast, the excellent Thing-like SFX, the themes of government, and how this hews to a kaiju movie. We're also drinking Sam Adams' new Summer Adventure Lager and Take-a-Day IPA!

For this episode of KaiJune, we wanted to cover something a little different and outside of the usual definition of a kaiju film. So we're tackling one of the staples of the Nuclear '50s with Them!, about giant killer ants in the New Mexico desert. Here we discuss the effects, the immediacy of the film's plotting, the colorful cast of the film, the Red Scare elements throughout, and a lot more! KaiJune (2) | GAMERA: GUARDIAN OF THE UNIVERSE

Our second foray into giant monster movies finds us jumping to the Heisei era for the rebirth of Gamera in Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, 15 years after the end of the original series. Here we find Gamera fighting Gyaos yet again but with all new backstory and science fiction mumbo jumbo; we talk about the film's penchant for delivering a lot of science talk, its lackluster special effects that vary from guys in suits to plastic action figure-like appearances, the unnecessary romance, and a lot more! KaiJune (1) | GODZILLA (1954)

We start our celebration of kaiju films from the very beginning, with the 1954 Godzilla from director Ishiro Honda. We discuss the film's merits and also some criticisms of the loose narrative structure; we also talk about the film's origins after World War II, its direct associations with nuclear bombings, the use (and confusing science behind) the Oxygen Destroyer, and a lot more! We're also drinking Kirin Ichiban beer, which is unfortunately the export brewed by InBev instead of the traditional Japanese lager.

MIDSOMMAR

MIDSOMMAR

We're doing a double-feature of Ari Aster flicks, and the one we're starting with is 2019's Midsommar! This folk horror tale about a bad breakup is surely inspired by The Wicker Man, but Aster goes above and beyond with a sprawling tale or cultural rituals that draws from historical fact. CRUEL INTENTIONS

CRUEL INTENTIONS

The weather's getting hotter and that means we're covering some sultry stuff on the show. We're tackling a '90s/'00s nostalgia trip with Cruel Intentions; if you grew up with Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Dawson's Creek, you most likely have in some way been impacted by the sexy trashiness that is this movie. We're talking the burn book plot devices, Ryan Philippe's character as a groomer, the soap opera magnitude of the script, and a whole lot more. We hope you enjoy our foray back into this cult trashic.

EVIL DEAD RISE

EVIL DEAD RISE

We'll come right out and say it - we weren't huge fans of Evil Dead Rise. In this episode, we attempt to document exactly why it didn't work for us. We know we seem to be in the minority here, but there were just some things that didn't fit, even besides the fact that this film really only feels like an Evil Dead movie in name alone. We talk about the gore, the lack of character reaction, the misuse of the apartment setting, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking Ommegang's Gnommegang Belgian Blonde Strong Ale!

THE LIGHTHOUSE

THE LIGHTHOUSE

We're a little late to Robert Eggers' 2019 opus The Lighthouse, but after watching it we both became instant fans of this psychological thriller/lonely men drama about two lighthouse keepers stuck on an island with potential supernatural elements. We talk about the various themes and interpretations you can come away with after watching the movie, the excellent performances from Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, the beauty of the film's cinematography and Canadian landscape, and a whole lot more. We hope you enjoy this episode and encourage you to watch the film! We're also drinking Equilibrium Brewery's Astronomical Twilight, a sour IPA with watermelon, strawberry, and lime.

STRAW DOGS (1971)

For this episode, we're talking about Sam Peckinpah's notorious classic psychological thriller Straw Dogs! Dustin Hoffman and Susan George star as a couple terrorized in Cornwall after they find out the locals are just as prone to violence as Americans. We talk about the themes, that r* scene that got the film an X rating, what Peckinpah means by the film's conclusion, and a lot more. We're also drinking the Fidens x Vitamin Sea collaboration Ducks & Axes!

SCREAM VI

SCREAM VI

We ventured out to theaters as Courteney Cox requested to see Scream VI and we have some opinions. If you remember from our episode on Scream (5), we were a bit mixed on how we felt about that one and we're pretty much the same on this one too. There are some hits, some misses, and we talk about a lot of plot holes throughout. Also - why is Danny in this movie? We're drinking Thin Man Brewery/Replay Brewing's Cute and Fuzzy Bunny Gang Carrot Cake Sour!

This time we're taking on Umberto Lenzi's Almost Human (AKA The Executioner, The Death Dealer, Milan Hates), which was recently released on Blu-ray by Severin Films. We talk about the film's vigilante politics, its focus on a sociopathic criminal, the Ennio Morricone soundtrack, and a lot more!

GROUNDHOG DAY

GROUNDHOG DAY

If it seems like deja vu, that's because Groundhog Day was last week and we missed our chance to get this episode up. However, in the spirit of the film, we're doing it now - and you'll like it! Here we talk about the seasonal seminal favorite Bill Murray movie that set into motion all of the other "reliving the same day" movies; we discuss the gaslighting going on in this movie, its classification as a romcom, the excellent assholeishness of Murray, and a whole lot more. We're also drinking New Belgium's new Fat Tire Ale recipe!

INFERNO

INFERNO

We said we were doing a giallo, and we were semi-faithful; while Dario Argento's Inferno isn't technically a giallo, it does have facets of one. We talk about this sequel to Suspiria and find new enjoyment in accepting the movie for what it is - a different take on the Three Mothers, with a unique approach to the subject matter that drives more into the dream-like than reality. We're discussing the crazy antics, the beautiful set design, some elaborate kills, and a whole lot more. Pair this with our previous episode on Suspiria for a great double-feature. This podcast was edited using Adobe's Enhance Speech AI!

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART V: A NEW BEGINNING

It's yet another Friday the 13th, so we might as well pick up where we left off! 3 years ago (wow!) we covered Part IV, and it's only fair we give the Jason-less A New Beginning a fair shake. Here we talk about how much the film beats you over the head about Roy, the enchiladas, the improperly-run mental health clinic, Debi Sue's Voorheeses, and more! New Year's Special | GHOSTKEEPER

New Year's Special | GHOSTKEEPER

When you think New Year's, you think a fresh start... growth... a chance at redemption. None of these things are present in Ghostkeeper, nor is there much New Year's celebrating. However, it is one of the few New Year's-related horror movies left to cover, and we couldn't help but check out this movie that includes a Wendigo creature that... doesn't really do anything. We talk about the slow pace, the snowmobiling, Marty being an asshole, and a whole lot more on this special New Year's episode!

Festivus Series | THE SANTA CLAUSES

For our last Festivus episode in 2022, we're tackling the six-part miniseries The Santa Clauses! Of course, it's a tradition for us to cover Tim Allen's holiday output and this is no different. We are pleasantly surprised by this Disney+ series and we attempt to document our enjoyment over the course of this 2.5+ hour show. We talk about Mrs. Claus, Bernard's return, the Yule-verse, attempt to understand how much money was left on the table by Judge Reinholdt, and a whole lot more. Festivus Series | ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

Festivus Series | ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

This was Martin's pick for Festivus, and while we will admit that it is not entirely Christmassy, it does take place during the bulk of the holiday season so we will allow it. We've already covered one Bond movie (From Russia With Love) and now we're taking a look at George Lazenby's only excursion as 007; here, we talk about the overarching espionage narrative, the excellent action sequences, Blofeld and his Swiss Alps laboratory, and a whole lot more. It's also a special beer episode; we're talking about Fidens' Do You Freestyle? West Coast and East Coast double IPAs. These were brewed in collaboration with Freestyle Hops in New Zealand and are meant to be two offerings with the same hop content in different IPA styles. We taste and comment on both, and later in the show, we combine them.
