406. Pete Sjostedt, Bob Kiah, Dennis McCarthy - Ape Hangers

On this episode, we are joined by all three members of the legendary Ape Hangers.

At the end of June, we did a zoom interview with Pete Sjostedt, Bob Kiah, and Dennis McCarthy — better known as Ape Hangers — for a fun, free-flowing conversation. These guys are not only amazing musicians but longtime friends and all-around great people. At the time, we were a little vague about what was on the horizon, but now I can finally let the cat out of the bag: Ape Hangers are officially back with a brand-new EP and single coming soon on Rum Bar Records. It’s been over 20 years since their incredible self-titled second album and even longer since their debut on A&M Records, which featured the unforgettable “I Don’t Want To Live Today,” famously included in the cult classic film Empire Records.

And here’s the really exciting part — the band is playing their first Boston show in more than two decades on Saturday, August 23 at 3 PM at the Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain. They’ll be sandwiched between two Boston rock staples, The Dogmatics and Stop Calling Me Frank, making it a powerhouse lineup for anyone who loves real, gritty, high-energy rock 'n' roll.

392. Buck Johnson - Aerosmith, Ringo Starr, Hollywood Vampires

Buck Johnson  is a seasoned singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer whose soulful ‘Cala-Bama’ sound fuses his Alabama gospel roots with a West Coast rock edge. Best known as the keyboardist and backing vocalist for Aerosmith, Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band, The Hollywood Vampires, and The Joe Perry Project, which recently revamped and has an incredible lineup featuring Chris Robinson of The Black Crows, Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz of Stone Temple Pilots, Brad Whitford, and Buck.

“Aerosmith was already a fine tuned machine when Buck came into the fold but he made them better if that was possible. His vocals complements Steven’s perfectly and Buck still being there is a true testament of what he brings to Aerosmith. I call him the “Swiss Army knife”! He plays keyboards and also guitar on some songs but his singing is his gift and it really shows on the Aerosmith, Vampires and Joe Perry live gigs. I think what puts him high above the rest as a well sought after musician is he is one of the finest humans you are going to meet”. -John Bionelli, Aerosmith

He let you know with his mixing that you saw and more importantly heard one of the greatest rock band’s ever. 389. Peter Cortner - Dag Nasty, Applied Knowledge

In this episode, we're joined by Peter Cortner—renowned for his iconic role as the frontman of the legendary punk band Dag Nasty. Of course we hit on the "Wig Out At Denkos" and "Field Day" albums. We also talk about Cortner’s really cool new band, Applied Knowledge, who release their debut album in May.

“Easily the equal of the Replacements at their best -- and as much a forebear of the Goo Goo Dolls' eventual success as a Minneapolis quartet -- Field Day is just that for the group. Peter Cortner's singing in a mere year's time has moved from the edgy, high-pitched rasp of Wig Out to include a ruminative, gently expressing tone, with more vocal control and a sweet edge than one will find in most of the band's peers. As for his lyrics, besides the analysis of personal interaction that defined earlier Dag Nasty material, Cortner addresses everything from being in a band and wanting to write "songs, powerful songs" to reflections on death, loss, and separation”.  -All Music

“If you’re a first-class songwriter, being shut down just might wind up turning you loose. David Wildman has written his share of gems over the years, often in bands that deserved way more attention than they got. His band TELL refines the moody yet pop-centric approach he’s had all along. …But the real news here is Wildman’s flair for storytelling: The songs here present characters who are a little offbeat, sometimes flawed but always recognizable, all making their way through a desperate era. It’s a lot like real life in these times, only catchier.” _Brett Milano, Boston music writer

In 2015, siblings Nick and Frankie began writing music and jamming together in their mother’s garage, drawing inspiration from Elliott Smith, the Avett Brothers, Title Fight, and Charmer. At the time, their sister Kelly Maxwell was teaching herself to play guitar, often listening and vibing along to their creations. The trio’s musical journey took on a deeper, more personal meaning after the loss of their father, Frank—an influential member of the Omaha, NE band Fifth of May. In honor of Frank’s legacy, the siblings turned to music as a way to channel their grief and keep his spirit alive. In this episode, we’re joined by Christian Dryden of the New York-based band, The Ritualists.

Emerging from the underground glam scene in NYC’s East Village, The Ritualists have become a key player in the Lower East Side music scene, a community that deeply influenced Dryden’s musical vision. Immersed in a world that draws inspiration from icons like The Velvet Underground and New York Dolls, as well as British glam rock, Dryden’s sound blends these influences with his own contemporary twist. Reflecting on his musical journey, Dryden shares, "Being inspired by larger-than-life figures like David Bowie, Simon Le Bon, Bryan Ferry, and Marc Bolan was both a gift and a challenge. While it was transformative to imagine these legends as musical soulmates, it also brought a sense of loneliness, as I felt like I was the only one with that vision... until I discovered the venues and clubs of the Lower East Side."

376. Dave Dictor - MDC

376. Dave Dictor - MDC

On this week's show, we are joined one of the original American Hardcore Punk legends, Dave Dictor of MDC.

Millions of Dead Cops (MDC) is an American hardcore punk band formed in 1981 in Austin, Texas. Known for its politically charged lyrics and aggressive sound, the band’s name itself reflects its intense stance on political issues—particularly focusing on anti-authoritarian themes, police brutality, and societal injustice.

The band’s music is deeply influenced by the punk rock and hardcore scenes of the early 1980s, blending fast, abrasive guitar riffs with defiant vocals. MDC's lyrics tackle a wide range of topics, from police violence to war, environmental destruction, and social inequalities, often with a provocative and unapologetically confrontational tone.

MDC originally started as a group called The Stains before changing their name to Millions of Dead Cops. They were an integral part of the early hardcore punk scene in Texas and beyond. Their debut album, Millions of Dead Cops (1982), received critical acclaim and helped to establish the band’s reputation in the underground punk community. Over the years, the band's lineup changed several times, but they maintained a dedicated following due to their uncompromising punk ethos.

MDC’s influence extends beyond music, as the band was involved in activism and political movements, aligning themselves with causes like animal rights, anti-capitalism, and anti-authoritarianism. While the band’s popularity peaked in the 1980s and 1990s, MDC continued to perform and release music over the years, maintaining its reputation as a symbol of resistance and a voice for marginalized communities.

Despite facing controversies due to the provocative nature of their name and lyrics, MDC remains an important figure in the history of hardcore punk, contributing to the genre’s political activism and direct engagement with social issues.

371. Justin Keane & Amy Young - Canyons And Locusts

On this episode, we are joined by Justin Keane and Amy Young, the fantastic indie rock duo known as Canyons And Locusts.

Canyons and Locusts is a melodic noise-rock duo from Boston and Phoenix, consisting of Justin Keane (vocals, guitar) from Boston and Amy Young (drums, backing vocals) from Phoenix. The band’s sound is defined by edgy guitar riffs, pulsating drum beats, and emotionally charged vocals, blending indie rock influences with an experimental edge.

Both Keane and Young honed their craft in previous bands before joining forces to create Canyons and Locusts. The duo’s music evokes a raw, atmospheric energy, with each song exploring different emotional landscapes.

The band’s upcoming 2025 concept album, "The Goal Gigolo", is inspired by a vivid dream Keane had about a character of the same name. The album is described as a cinematic journey, drawing comparisons to Robert Altman’s film "The Long Goodbye".

Their 2024 EP, "The Red Angel", marked a significant step in their sonic evolution, featuring the singles "Buck Dharma's Eyes" and "To Art Bell." The track "Anna Save A Life" will appear on "The Goal Gigolo", adding to the anticipation for the full album's release.

Canyons and Locusts continue to push boundaries with their unique blend of storytelling, sound, and emotion.

360. Dave Harrison - The False Positives, The Voodoo Dolls

360. Dave Harrison - The False Positives, The Voodoo Dolls

Dave Harrison joins us on the show today to talk about his all-star band The False Positives and their new recordings. We also take a trip down memory lane to revisit his work with the late '80s/early '90s band The Voodoo Dolls, along with much more!

The Voodoo Dolls were a garage rock band from Boston, known for their raw, energetic sound that blends elements of punk, rock 'n' roll, and psychedelia. Emerging from the vibrant Boston music scene, the band typically drew inspiration from classic garage rock influences like The Stooges, The Sonics, and The Cramps, while adding their own unique twist.

The band's style featured gritty guitar riffs, pounding rhythms, and rebellious, sometimes cryptic lyrics that reflect the energy and chaos of their live shows. The Voodoo Dolls appealed to fans of underground rock and the DIY ethos, creating music that's raw and unapologetic.

359. Paul Marotta - The Styrenes, The Mirrors, The Electric Eels

On this special edition of the podcast, we are joined by Paul Marotta, who played in several legendary Cleveland bands including The Styrenes, The Mirrors, and The Electric Eels. Paul also has the distinct honor as having been the man who hired the host of this show to his very first job in the music business..Yes it's True.

The Electric Eels were a pioneering band in the early Cleveland punk scene, known for their chaotic, raw sound and experimental approach to punk rock. While they didn’t gain widespread recognition during their brief existence in the mid-1970s, they’ve since become influential in the punk and underground music worlds.

The Mirrors were another significant band in Cleveland’s 1970s punk and new wave scene, known for their blend of early punk energy and melodic pop sensibilities. While they never achieved widespread fame, their music and style have become highly regarded by fans of Cleveland’s underground music history.

The Styrenes were another key band in the 1970s Cleveland punk scene, known for their unique blend of garage rock, punk energy, and raw, often chaotic performances. Like many of the bands from this era, they were more influential in the underground scene than they were commercially successful during their time.

357. Michael Cudahy - Christmas, Combustible Edison

357. Michael Cudahy - Christmas, Combustible Edison

Michael Cudahy(Combustible Edison, Christmas) joins us on the show to talk about the release of Propeller Product 4.1 double album.

Cudahy was a founding member of Christmas. Christmas was known for its unique blend of alternative rock, post-punk, and experimental sounds, often with a dark and atmospheric edge. Their music was marked by layered guitar work, unconventional song structures, and a moody, sometimes brooding, tone.

After Christmas, Cudahy went on to form Combustible Edison, a band that took a very different approach, blending lounge music, exotica, and surf rock influences. The group became known for its retro style, incorporating elements of mid-century cocktail culture, instrumental pop, and jazz, but with a contemporary twist.
