Body Justice

By Allyson Ford, MA, LPCC

Hi! I'm Allyson, a licensed therapist specializing in eating disorders, OCD and anxiety. My mission is to create a world where all bodies can thrive by promoting messages of body justice, recovery skills and mental health tips from the perspective of an ED/OCD therapist, survivor and activist. Social justice is an integral part of my work. I identify as a mixed race woman and I believe that all parts of our identity (race, gender, abilities, size, sexual orientation, etc) impact how we perceive our bodies and the bodies of others, unpacking this is the key to our freedom.

46. Eating Disorders and ADHD: from a Neurodivergent Affirming Lens with Stacie Fanelli, LCSW

46. Eating Disorders and ADHD: from a Neurodivergent Affirming Lens with Stacie Fanelli, LCSW

Episode 46 of Body Justice is all about the intersection Eating Disorders and ADHD from a Neurodivergent Affirming Lens! Did you know 17% of ED sufferers also have ADHD? Wondering how might this impact recovery? This episode is for you.

About today's guest:

Stacie Fanelli, she/her, LCSW, is a clinical social worker and therapist working primarily in the intersection of neurodivergence and eating disorders. She leans heavily on lived experience as a late-diagnosed ADHDer in sustained eating disorder recovery, as well as ongoing continuing education in anti-carceral and affirming treatment approaches, to support individuals and families in pursuing their visions for recovery. Stacie has worked at all levels of care in treatment of eating disorders and developed an interest in addressing concerns specific to neurodivergent populations through advocacy and education after observing poor treatment outcomes and further harm perpetuated in programs that were designed around neurotypical needs.
In her outpatient work at two group practices in Southern California, she utilizes elements of various cognitive modalities but emphasizes relationship and deconstruction of oppressive systems as primary tools for healing internalized capitalism, ableism, and fatphobia. She remains committed to providing education through social media, trainings, and upcoming writings to eating disorder professionals on de-pathologization of neurodivergent traits as well as to neurodivergent professionals on incorporating anti-diet and fat liberation lenses into their work.

43. Treating Terminal Anorexia with Dignity and Love (Part One) with Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani, MD, CED-S, FAED

You might be wondering what do we do in terminal cases of Anorexia. Terminal Anorexia is different than Severe and Enduring AN- where sufferers do often make a recovery after 20 years (research shows). Terminal AN is diagnosed when the sufferer will die from malnutrition within 6 months. This is an extremely small portion of AN sufferers that often falls through the cracks of dignified, whole person care. Dr. Gaudiani and I talk about how to cope and treat these cases in a way that centers autonomy, dignity and love for one's end of life.

Jennifer L. Gaudiani, MD, CEDS-S, FAED, is the Founder and Medical Director of  the Gaudiani Clinic. 39. The Power of Peer Support + Alternative Paths to Recovery with Akiera Gilbert from Body Reborn

39. The Power of Peer Support + Alternative Paths to Recovery with Akiera Gilbert from Body Reborn

Hear Allyson and Akiera discuss alternative paths to food and body liberation, and how peer support is extremely powerful when recovering from an eating disorder. Akiera is the founder of Body Reborn and is dedicated to helping folks break through oppressive barriers in order to find a place of food and body freedom.
Body Reborn is a non-profit, serving BIPOC who struggle with their relationship with food. More from Akiera:
For years, we heard other folks of color say “When I talk to therapists, go to support groups, other people’s stories don’t sound like mine. They have different problems — and those problems are real, but I can’t relate. How am I supposed to actually get help?”
We couldn't find support in a space that was accessible -- so we built our own. Body Reborn is the place for BIPOC who can’t find their space. Our signature program, The Healing Collaborative, is a peer community designed to heal your relationship with food and your body in a culturally relevant way.
Akiera is the Founder of Body Reborn. She has spent her career in the social impact space, supporting underserved communities -- from women and girls who have experienced sexual violence, to incarcerated individuals in New York. Prior to starting Body Reborn, she served as a sponsor for other people recovering from eating disorders,

26. Overcoming Perfectionism with Dr. Menije

26. Overcoming Perfectionism with Dr. Menije

Listen to episode #26 to hear Allyson and Dr. Menije discuss all things perfectionism, and how Dr. Menije helps others embrace imperfection. Learn about how perfectionism is at the root of many psychological conditions including eating disorders, OCD and high functioning anxiety, how it is exacerbated by systems of oppression including capitalism and how we can begin to undo the harms of perfectionism in our lives.

Dr. Menije is a leading expert on overcoming perfectionism and building an authentic life. As the founder of Perfectionism University, an online platform for self-help courses on breaking up with perfectionism, her goal is to create a community where we can all unlearn Perfectionism and start our journey of embracing imperfections and owning our enoughness.  She knows firsthand how perfectionism can lead to anxiety and disconnection from self. She had her real awakening once she read the “Gifts of Imperfection” from one and only Dr. Brene Brown. She realized there was a name to what she was suffering from. She was seeking perfectionism because deep down, she thought "I wasn’t good enough." Now, Dr. Menije speaks relentlessly on many platforms to share her personal story combined with her clinical training as a licensed psychologist to help women break up with perfectionism. She knows one can be a prisoner of their perfectionism. Her hope for you is that you turn the judgment to compassion and ultimately live a life where you embrace imperfection rather than striving for perfection.
