Ep. 46: Melissa Suffield talks about exclusively pumping

Content creator and actress Melissa Suffield is our special guest on the boobingit podcast this week. Mother of one Melissa regular shares her family life and motherhood journey on her hugely successful social media page The Confident Mama.

In this episode Melissa talks to us about exclusively pumping milk for her son for the first year of his life and what led her to do this.

During the conversation we speak about the lack of information around exclusively pumping in the UK, how it’s not talked about or seen as the ‘done thing’. She explains: “I had a second hand breast pump in case I needed it and this was my lifeline. But no one talked to me about pumping, and there was no information on the NHS – or anywhere else. Because people don’t want you do that, they don’t want you to be pumping exclusively, they want you to be nursing.”

Melissa is open and honest about the pros and cons that come with exclusively pumping – and why she believes people need to do their research first before entering into a journey like this. She finishes by sharing her tips and advice for anyone thinking about exclusively pumping.

Black Breastfeeding Week Special with Kiddada Green

Black Breastfeeding Week Special with Kiddada Green

Kiddada Green, the co-founder of Black Breastfeeding Week, is my guest on the podcast this week. Kiddada lives in Detroit, and also the Founding Executive Director of Black Mothers Breastfeeding Association, which was first set up in 2007 to reduce racial inequities in breastfeeding support for black families.

As a thought leader and innovator, Kiddada has made huge strides in the area of breastfeeding support, and policy making. She serves on various committees and special projects and has had work published internationally in Breastfeeding Medicine and other noteworthy publications. It’s no surprise she has been the recipient of many awards for the work she does and continues to do in support of black maternal and child health.

Celebrating 10 years of Black Breastfeeding Week

Black Breastfeeding Week has been running since 2012 and is marking its 10th anniversary this year.

Looking back on the past ten years, Kiddada explains the reasons why she and her other co-founders Kimberly Seals Allers and Anayah Sangodele-Ayoka first felt the need to set up Black Breastfeeding Week to bring greater awareness to breastfeeding in black and brown communities.

Kiddada tells us about the exciting things in store for this year's Black Breastfeeding Week celebration, including an awards ceremony happening in New York City on 30th August. She also lets us know about the fundraising they are doing to support the work of Black Breastfeeding Week - which is run purely by volunteers.

Kiddada also explains the poignancy of this year's theme: 'A New Foundation'

A New Foundation

Kiddada gives us an insight into how she and her co-founders came up with this year's theme 'a new foundation' - how it organically came about and how ultimately they were inspired by Beyonce's new album Renaissance.

Speaking about the 2022 theme for Black Breastfeeding Week, Kiddada says: "We feel like Black Breastfeeding Week is at a pivitol point. We want to respect the traditions and history of black women and breastfeeding and at the same time look at what's been done despite the historical trauma and atrocities that have happened. We wanted to keep that in mind whilst looking at this new foundation which has been born through community. We're excited by that and what will come in the next ten years."

In this episode, Kate tells us about when she discovered the power of breast milk through her work, how it inspired and informed her own breastfeeding journey and why she still can't believe she breastfeeds her toddler! We look at the societal and cultural norms which influence our decision to breastfeed, and why there's still so much stigma around breastfeeding and co-sleeping older babies and children.

Our special guest on the podcast this week is songwriter, creator, actor and mama of two Riona O’Connor.

Riona is a huge breastfeeding advocate and natural term breastfeeder. On Riona’s hugely popular Instagram account @rionaoconnor_ she entertains her loyal following with mama parodies and comedy skits. She also talks personally about her recent ADHD diagnosis and her intuitive eating journey.

The second time around Riona was a lot more accepting of what worked for her and her family and gained more confidence with her breastfeeding choices.  At this stage, she was breastfeeding both her baby and toddler.

She recalls how a picture of her four-year-old breastfeeding went viral, sparking conversations and criticisms around natural term breastfeeding. We look at how society and mainstream media depict breastfeeding and how this has inevitably shaped our view of breastfeeding - specifically around breastfeeding older babies and children.

So popular have the books been, that they were voted the Best Gift for Mum in the Project Baby Awards in 2021.

In this episode, we talk about the struggles of early motherhood, the unrealisitic expectations we often have as well as the unsolicited parenting advice we wish we weren’t given.

Ep. 28: International Day of the Midwife

Ep. 28: International Day of the Midwife

We are marking International Day of the Midwife and our special guest for this episode of the boobingit podcast is midwife, mama and campaigner Charlotte Gill.

Charlotte has been a midwife for over 10 years, and after working in an NHS hospital in England she recently left and is now a fertility midwife with a private practice. She is a proud mama of one little girl and you’ll regularly find Charlotte on social media advocating for mental health and IVF.

In this episode, Charlotte tells us about what her own experience of being a midwife has been like over the years and how her role has dramatically changed in ten years. She talks in detail about the challenges faced by midwives and why crucial issues like underfunding and working conditions need to be improved in maternity services.

Charlotte’s passion for the work she does comes across, especially when talking about helping new mothers get to grips with breastfeeding – and how she is incredibly fulfilled in her new role at a fertility clinic, helping people realise their dream of becoming parents.

Charlotte also opens up about her own difficult journey to motherhood and how it impacted upon her mental health, leading to postnatal depression and a stay in a mother and baby unit during the height of the pandemic.

Ep.26: In conversation with Holistic Sleep Coach Lyndsey Hookway

In this episode, I speak with International Speaker, IBCLC, and Holistic Sleep Coach Lyndsey Hookway. Lyndsey is the author of several publications as well as three books, including 'Let's Talk About Your New Family's Sleep.'

Many parents turn to Lyndsey for her evidence-based, gentle, and respectful information on all things relating to infant sleep and breastfeeding.

We cover a lot of ground in this episode, starting with responsive parenting and what it really means. Lyndsey offers up some great tips on how we can learn to respond to our baby's cues and unique needs - acknowledging the fact that this isn't something that necessarily comes easily to us.

During our conversation, we also discuss cosleeping and bedsharing, and the differences between the two. We look at the realities of how bedsharing can actually make breastfeeding more sustainable and manageable for many people. Lyndsey also gives some really great advice for parents dealing with sleep deprivation.

Ep. 25: Breastfeeding support within the Armed Forces

Ep. 25: Breastfeeding support within the Armed Forces

Our special guest on the podcast this week is Natasha Day, a serving medic in the British Army and Chair of The Breastfeeding Defence Network. Natasha won the Inspirational Woman in Defence 2021 title for all the work she has done to support and spread awareness of breastfeeding women within The Services.

Natasha talks about how far breastfeeding support within the Armed Forces has come since she set up The Breastfeeding Defence Network in June 2020.

Inspired to set up the network after returning to work from maternity leave and determined to continue breastfeeding, she wanted to find a way to ensure all breastfeeding families across the Army, Navy, and RAF have access to help and support.

Natasha speaks about her own early motherhood journey and the physical and emotional connection she has from breastfeeding her son, who is now two and half.

A big part of our conversation centres on the need for better support for breastfeeding people returning to work after having a baby. We look at why this benefits the breastfeeding person and their family, but also the organisation as a whole.

With rising rates of women in the Armed Forces, Natasha speaks about how they are seen as an asset and why career progression still matters even after starting a family and having maternity leave.

Ep.24. Izzy Judd on the ups and downs of breastfeeding her three children

Ep.24. Izzy Judd on the ups and downs of breastfeeding her three children

In the first boobingit podcast episode of 2022, I sit down with Izzy Judd to talk about her three very different breastfeeding experiences. Izzy is a mama of three, author and the wife of Harry Judd from the band McFly. You may also know Izzy as the violinist with the electric string quartet Escala, who took part in Britain’s Got Talent in 2008.

Having recently given birth to her third child, Lockie, Izzy is in the depths of the newborn phase and she goes into details about the ups and downs of breastfeeding the third time around.

We also look back on her pregnancy and breastfeeding experiences with her oldest two children, Lola and Kit, who were born just a year apart.

Izzy is the first to admit breastfeeding has never been an easy journey for her to tread, having encountered multiple issues, including tongue ties, poor latches, and recurrent mastitis.

She speaks openly about how breastfeeding can be a more complex task with older children around and how she’s always tried her best to make it work – whether exclusively breastfeeding or combination feeding.

Thank you to Ardo medical Ltd for sponsoring this episode of the boobingit podcast.

Christmas special: The gift of donor milk, with Dr. Natalie Shenker

Christmas special: The gift of donor milk, with Dr. Natalie Shenker

Since it’s the season of giving I wanted to talk about one of the greatest gifts of all - that of donated breast milk. My special guest on this episode of the boobingit podcast is Dr Natalie Shenker, Cofounder of The Human Milk Foundation.

Natalie is an Oxford-trained doctor and researcher, and she co-founded the Hearts Milk Bank in 2016. In 2019 she was awarded a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship at Imperial College London.

In this episode Natalie talks to us about how donated breast milk is used by hospitals around the world to help give sick and premature babies the best possible start in life when mother’s milk is not available.

Natalie tells us why donor milk is needed more than ever, with babies being born to mothers with Covid 19 and too ill to feed them. The last three months in particular have seen hospitals and families in urgent need of donor milk for babies.

We also look at why it's so important for pregnant people to get vaccinated and protect themselves against Covid 19.

Ep.22: Understanding breastfeeding aversion with Zainab Yate MSc, BSc

Ep.22: Understanding breastfeeding aversion with Zainab Yate MSc, BSc

This week on the boobingit guest my special guest is international speaker, campaigner and author Zainab Yate. Zainab is a breastfeeding advocate and infant feeding research ethics specialist. She’s also a specialist on the complex topic of breastfeeding aversion and agitation having suffered from negative emotions whilst breastfeeding her own children.

Last year Zainab released her book about aversion, called ‘When Breastfeeding Sucks’ based on the research she did with thousands of breastfeeding people around the world. Her findings have shaped how we view breastfeeding aversion and have helped many seek help and be better understood by the breastfeeding supporters who work with them.

In our chat, Zainab explains what breastfeeding aversion is, how it can come about and what we can do to seek help and support. It's not always a case of needing or wanting to stop breastfeeding.

Zainab also talks openly about her own experiences of aversion with her two children, how it defined her early motherhood and why she struggled to tell anyone about it in the beginning. In her Iranian culture and as a Muslim woman, breastfeeding was assumed, and so for Zainab there was no other option but to breastfeed. She tells us how she found it difficult to describe what was happening to her and why this motivated her to do her own research into the phenomenon.

Ep.19: Mama of two Kallie Branciforte talks combination feeding

Ep.19: Mama of two Kallie Branciforte talks combination feeding

My guest on the podcast this week is Connecticut blogger, YouTuber and mama of two Kallie Branciforte. Kallie runs the popular blog butfirstcoffee.com and is mama to her toddler son Miles and baby girl Finley. In this podcast on combination feeding we talk alot about the benefits that can come from doing a mix of breastfeeding and infant formula feeding.

Kallie talks openly about her tough breastfeeding experience with her firstborn Miles and how, second-time-around, her experience and outlook was completely different - leading to a more positive and relaxed feeding experience.

From the very beginning with Miles, Kallie nursed at the breast, pumped milk for top-ups, and also gave infant formula to ensure Miles was getting enough. Despite loving breastfeeding her son, that first year of feeding was relentless and full-on.

Fast forward to then being pregnant with her baby girl Finley and Kallie knew she couldn't go through the same rigorous process - especially now with a toddler in tow too. With this awareness came an acceptance that she wouldn't put the same pressure on herself to breastfeed Finely as she did with Miles. So when they did encounter some blips in their feeding journey, Kallie was open-minded about combination feeding once again - minus the guilt!

World Breastfeeding Week Special: Normalising breastfeeding through stories

World Breastfeeding Week Special: Normalising breastfeeding through stories

The podcast is back with a World Breastfeeding Week special! My special guest is author and breastfeeding peer supporter Emma Rosen. We talk about how important it is to normalise breastfeeding through everyday personal stories as well as in books.

Emma is a mama of three and author of two books - soon to be three books! Emma is a self-confessed ‘breastfeeding geek’. She believes the more we talk about breastfeeding, and share our stories, the more we will help normalise breastfeeding.

She breastfed all three of her children and had very different experiences with them all. Her first journey in particular was a struggle and inspired her to write her first book 'Milk: A Story of Breastfeeding in a Society That's Forgotten How', a memoir about her own experiences and what she learned along the way. She's passionate about not sugar-coating breastfeeding and showing the lived experience of breastfeeding, warts and all.

Emma's now in the final stages of bringing her third book to market with the help of a Kickstarter campaign. It's a children's book called 'Milk and Cookies' - and you guessed it - all about breastfeeding! We talk about what drove her to write a book for children and why it is important to normalise breastfeeding for young children. We also look at the merits of building breastfeeding into the curriculum and educating children about breastfeeding from a young age.

Thank you to BREAST-FRIEND for sponsoring this episode of the boobingit podcast. BREAST-FRIEND was set up by a mother and daughter duo who wanted to make life a little easier when breastfeeding. Ep. 16: Breastfeeding and postpartum style tips with Martina Minarik

Ep. 16: Breastfeeding and postpartum style tips with Martina Minarik

This week on the podcast I’m joined by mama of two and owner of NINE+QUARTER maternity wear Martina Minarik. Martina discusses her own pregnancy and breastfeeding journey and shares some of her top style tips for what to wear during the postpartum period to make you feel good and also to make life that little bit easier!

Martina was inspired to set up her own business NINE+QUARTER maternity wear after having her first child and struggling to find cool pieces to wear during pregnancy and then whilst breastfeeding. However, it wasn’t until she had her second child that she decided to do act on her inspiration (and frustration!) and create her own designs. She knew she wasn’t the only mama-to-be who felt constrained by a of lack style options available for maternity wear.

Originally from Sweden, Martina spent many years in London, and is now currently living in Bermuda with her family. She’s full of practical advice and top tips for rocking your body no matter what stage of motherhood you’re in.

Martina is offering boobingit listeners 10% off all NINE+QUARTER maternity & breastfeeding wear. Listen to the episode for the discount code!

Ep. 15: Prof. Amy Brown on why breastfeeding is championed but not supported

Ep. 15: Prof. Amy Brown on why breastfeeding is championed but not supported

On the podast this week I am joined by academic and author Professor Amy Brown. Amy has dedicated the last fifteen years to breastfeeding research, specifically looking at the psychological, cultural and societal barriers to breastfeeding.

As well as publishing over 100 papers on breastfeeding, she’s also the author of several books including ‘The Positive Breastfeeding Book’, ‘Breastfeeding Uncovered’ and ‘Why Breastfeeding Grief and Trauma Matter’.

I wanted to pick Amy’s brain about a number of breastfeeding matters – including society’s lack of regard for breastfeeding and why breastfeeding grief and trauma exist.

Whilst most of us get the message during pregnancy that breastfeeding is a fantastic thing to do and we should all be doing it – the support and infrastructure to help women breastfeed is a long way off being where it needs to be. Due to generations of formula use, our breastfeeding knowledge amongst families and communities has been lost and we’re left struggling to find the right information and support to help us breastfeed.

So how can professionals, friends and family and society as a whole do better to support a person to breastfeed? Listen to the episode to see all that Amy has to say, and to get an update on the latest edition of her book ‘Breastfeeding Uncovered‘.

Ep. 14: The truth about breastfeeding & medication with Sarah Robinson and Dr Wendy Jones MBE

Ep. 14: The truth about breastfeeding & medication with Sarah Robinson and Dr Wendy Jones MBE

On the podcast this week I am joined by, not one but, two special guests - Pharmacists Sarah Robinson and Dr Wendy Jones MBE. Sarah and Wendy talk to me about the big issue of breastfeeding and medication. The topic is one of the most searched for terms online so we look at what more needs to be done to better inform breastfeeding mothers when they need help the most.

Wendy is a founding member of The Breastfeeding Network and was responsible for setting up the Drugs in Breastmilk Service in the 1990s. From relatively small beginnings, the service now helps advise 1000s of breastfeeding mothers and healthcare professionals each and every year.

Wendy was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for 2019 for all the work she has done in supporting breastfeeding mothers and their families.

As a clinical pharmacist, Sarah recently joined the Drugs in Breast Milk Service as a volunteer. Motivated by her new role and her own experience of breastfeeding her two children, Sarah wrote a fantastic article for boobingit, in which she talks about the devastating impact poorly given advice about medicine use while breastfeeding can have.

Sarah is passionate about ensuring women are informed about their options when breastfeeding and requiring medication.

Ep.13: Getting to grips with breastfeeding and motherhood during a global pandemic

Ep.13: Getting to grips with breastfeeding and motherhood during a global pandemic

On the podcast this week I am joined by Grace who is mama to little Freddie, born at the height of the Covid pandemic in 2020. Grace was actually one of the first mamas to share her breastfeeding story on boobingit.com when we launched last year. Since then she’s become one of boobingit’s founding members and has even become a regular contributor to the platform.

Grace talks about what it’s been like finding her feet as a first-time mother in a global pandemic, how she found getting to grips with breastfeeding during lockdown, and her experience of getting the Covid vaccine. She also talks about returning to work as a healthcare worker, and how her employers are supporting her to continue to breastfeed. We cover a lot of ground in this episode and I think it'll be a story that will resonate with so many new parents.

"I do feel robbed of my maternity leave. I haven't been able to go to baby classes and chat with other mums. It's been very tough at times but I do try and take the positives away from it. Freddie and I have an amazing bond, because it has just been us."

This episode of the boobingit podcast is sponsored by NINE + QUARTER maternity, a brand that offers a different kind of maternity and nursing wear. Their mission is to bring you on-trend, organic and easy-to-rock designs that fit seamlessly into your pre- and post-pregnancy wardrobe without compromising your style. Ep. 12: Why breastfeeding peer support is important to new mothers, with Miriam Bannan

Ep. 12: Why breastfeeding peer support is important to new mothers, with Miriam Bannan

On the podcast this week I am joined by Miriam Bannan who is a mama of three, a breastfeeding supporter and an opera singer! Miriam is originally from Australia but has been based in the UK for a long time. She is used to juggling family life with performing as a Soprano, often mixing the two! Recently you may have seen Miriam on your tv screen when she sang at Prince Philip’s funeral in April.

Miriam talks about her interesting background and gives us an insight to what it was like breastfeeding all three of her children whilst working as an opera singer.

She tells us why she was inspired to train as a breastfeeding peer supporter with The Breastfeeding Network, and why she loves helping new mothers get to grips with breastfeeding and overcome any challenges they may face.

Our chat leads on to us talking about how each and every one of us can be a support to a breastfeeding mother, with Miriam offering up some really practical tips on how to do this.

Ep. 11: What it's like tandem feeding twins

Ep. 11: What it's like tandem feeding twins

After a short break in recordings, the boobingit podcast is back! This week I am joined by Caitlin who is a mama of three girls. She has twin girls Isla and Mia who are five, and then there is her youngest daughter Skye who is 2.

Caitlin was good enough to share her story of breastfeeding twins in the ‘Breastfeeding for Beginners’ ebook (which you can buy here). Breastfeeding multiples is no easy feat so I wanted to have her on to the podcast to talk about her experience in more detail. I also wanted to shine a light on what it was like going from breastfeeding twins to breastfeeding a single baby!

In our chat, Caitlin talks about her surprise at finding out she was expecting twins and what she did to prepare in terms of breastfeeding. Caitlin tells us about her birth and how she was able to establish breastfeeding in those first few weeks. She touches on what it was like breastfeeding in public and why she thought tandem feeding was the best option from the very beginning.

Caitlin also shares some fantastic tips and advice on feeding multiples and gives us a really great insight into breastfeeding twins and then breastfeeding her third baby!

Special episode: Down Syndrome awareness with Mighty Matilda

Special episode: Down Syndrome awareness with Mighty Matilda

This week on the podcast I am joined by by Linzi who is mummy to Matilda, or ‘Mighty Matilda’ as she is known by on Instagram! Matilda is almost 2 years old and she has Down Syndrome.

Both Linzi and Matilda do so much to raise awareness of Down Syndrome both online and offline. For those of you who don’t know, Down Syndrome is a condition in which a child is born with an extra copy of their 21st chromosome.

Linzi was one of the first mamas to share her breastfeeding story on boobingit.com which I am so grateful for. I know her story resonated with so many and since it will soon be World Down Syndrom Day on Sunday 21 March I wanted to invite Linzi on to talk more about her and Matilda’s amazing story.

Pregnancy, giving birth and learning to breastfeed a baby with Down Syndrome

Mama of three Linzi opens up about how she and her partner felt when they first were given a Down Syndrome diagnosis during her pregnancy. She describes how they found the strength to cope and stay positive. Linzi also tells us about giving birth to Matilda and the shock heart condition diagnosis which came eight days later. We also hear of Linzi's experience of breastfeeding for the first time, including her dedication to pumping milk in the early days and her fear her baby would never be able to latch on to the breast.

World Down Syndrome Day

Linzi and Matilda, along with the rest of the Down Syndrome community across the world, will be celebrating World Down Syndrome Day on Sunday 21 March 2021. The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome. It's a day dedicated to advocating for the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down syndrome. Part of the campaign is #LotsofSocks whereby you wear brightly coloured or mismatched socks and post your pictures online.

Ep. 9: Breastfeeding older babies & children, with Emma Pickett IBCLC

Ep. 9: Breastfeeding older babies & children, with Emma Pickett IBCLC

On the podcast this week I get to chat to Emma Pickett, a breastfeeding advocate whom I've admired for a long-time. Not only is Emma a breastfeeding counsellor and IBCLC, she's also the Chair of the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers and author of the ‘The Breast Book: talking to young people about the when, why and how of breasts’.

I wanted to have Emma on as I'd heard she was writing her latest book, which is going to centre on breastfeeding beyond six months - what some might consider extended or long-term breastfeeding. It will be primarily aimed at healthcare professionals to improve their awareness and understanding of the benefits of breastfeeding past six months, but it will also be a helpful resource for parents too.

During the course of our chat, Emma sheds light on the realities of breastfeeding older babies and children, and the benefits that can be gained from it. She also explains what is meant by the term 'natural-term breastfeeding' and why in western societies we aren't used to seeing or hearing people breastfeed older children.

We also have a frank discussion about the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on breastfeeding, and what happens when our breastfeeding choices are not supported by those around us.

Emma Pickett IBCLC: "There's absolutely no reason why anyone should feel like they need to stop breastfeeding before they want to - it makes no scientific sense. Yet we continually get weird cultural messaging telling us to stop."

Ep. 8: Breastfeeding after a caesarean section

Ep. 8: Breastfeeding after a caesarean section

In this episode of the podcast I am delighted to be joined by Sara, whose breastfeeding story features in the boobingit book 'Breastfeeding for Beginners'. Sara opens up and tells us what it was like giving birth to her little girl Layla and her experience of breastfeeding after a casesarean section. She takes us through the immediate aftermath and the days, weeks, and months that followed.

Sara's journey to motherhood was not an easy one. She had multiple miscarriages before getting pregnant with Layla, and she had to have a lot of help and intervention to help her carry Layla to term. As soon as Layla was born safe and sound, Sara knew she wanted to breastfeed straight-away. During those early days and weeks, the support of her partner was invaluable, especially since she was recovering from surgery and depended on him to do a lot for her and the baby, as well as all the housework!

Ep. 7: Breastfeeding and returning to work - how hard is it?

Ep. 7: Breastfeeding and returning to work - how hard is it?

This week on the podcast I chat with Tessa about her breastfeeding experience with her son Elliot and what it was like returning to work. Tessa works as a Goldsmith in London's Notting Hill and is fortunate to love her job, but that didn't mean going back was easy!

Like a lot of breastfeeding mamas who've been on maternity leave during the Covid pandemic, Tessa spent all her time with her baby and never really needed to pump. So how did she manage a new routine of pumping milk for her son and returning to work? And how did her little boy adapt to being in a nursery and having to take a bottle of express milk?

We look at what worked and what didn't in Tessa's case and why it can be difficult to continue to breastfeed upon returning to work. We discuss how hard it can be to prepare yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally to return to work...especially in these uncertain times when work demands and work environments are changing. But similarly, we also look at how going back to work can be a really positive thing too - for both mama and baby!

Ep. 6: What happens when breastfeeding doesn't work out?

Ep. 6: What happens when breastfeeding doesn't work out?

This week on the podcast...

This week on the podcast I speak with journalist Sheena McStravick about her attempts to breastfeed her son and what happens when breastfeeding doesn't work out. Like so many mamas, she really wanted to give breastfeeding a go and had done some research about breastfeeding to prepare herself. And by all accounts, she and her son Dáire got off to a great start breastfeeding. After he was born, he latched on straight away for his first feed! After enduring a grueling 23-hour labour, Sheena was ecstatic to breastfeed.

At home, matters took a turn for the worst

Once home, and as Sheena attempted to recover from a difficult and draining birth, issues for both her and her son came to the fore. She felt progressively worse and her son was feeding around the clock. Something had to give, and when Sheena was admitted to hospital one week after giving birth, she and her husband had to make a difficult decision.

"Despite the reassurance from those around me, the self-doubt crept in and I just had a feeling something wasn't right." ~ Sheena

The impact labour can have on breastfeeding success

In this episode, Sheena talks us through what happened during her labour and how this had a profound impact on her ability to breastfeed. We talk about the pressure we put on ourselves as women to breastfeed, and the guilt associated with 'failing' to breastfeed and opting to use infant formula.

How do you get past the disappointment of not being able to breastfeed and make peace with the situation you found yourself in? Listen in to this honest and enlightening interview with Sheena.

Sheena's big talking points
  • Trying to breastfeed when in recovery from my long and grueling labour
  • How I became borderline sepsis just days after giving birth
  • The pressure I put on myself to keep breastfeeding
  • How I made peace with my experience and moved on
  • The learning curve my husband and I went on with formula feeding
  • Advice I would give to others in similar circumstances

Ep. 5: Breastfeeding, motivation, and culture with Dr Lesley Dornan

Ep. 5: Breastfeeding, motivation, and culture with Dr Lesley Dornan

On the podcast this week, I am joined by special guest Dr Lesley Dornan, who is a Lecturer in Nursing at the University of Ulster. Lesley’s background is in breastfeeding and child and maternal health and she spent ten years overseas in South East Asia studying and working. Her PhD centred on breastfeeding, motivation, and culture.

I first came in contact with Lesley when I attended a talk she did at the start of 2020. The talk was entitled ‘Why women don’t breastfeed’ and it looked at the idea that women don’t breastfeed, cultures do.

I found Lesley’s talk fascinating and so I was delighted when she agreed to come on this podcast and talk more about her specialist subject!

Lesley's big talking points:
  • Cultural differences in how breastfeeding is looked upon and treated in Thailand Vs the UK
  • The big differences between breastfeeding rates in Thailand and the UK
  • The meaning and significance of mothers' 'milk debt' in Thai culture.
  • How the expectations and goals women set themselves affect their decision to continue to breastfeed
  • The important role a partner plays in breastfeeding and how they can bond with a breastfed baby
  • Knowing when to ask for help if breastfeeding gets tough

"The resilience of mums is incredible...and regardless of whether you achieve all your breastfeeding goals or not - to start and explore it and to take that risk, celebrate that. Celebrate your choices and your achievements. None of us are perfect mums and so none of us are going to be perfect breastfeeding mums."

Ep. 4: Breastfeeding, bouncy blow-dries and breast implants!

Ep. 4: Breastfeeding, bouncy blow-dries and breast implants!

This week on the podcast I chat with Instagram Influencer Naomi on what it's like breastfeeding with implants and the struggles of returning to work.

Known as @naomibouncyblows on Instagram, Naomi has built a huge following thanks to her amazing hair skills and bubbly personality. Her following has grown bigger in the past year as she started to document her life as a new mama to baby boy Sullivan. Her honesty around new motherhood, breastfeeding with implants, and finding her feet after having a baby is why I wanted to ask her on to the podcast.

Naomi's pregnancy was hard and she worried a lot about whether breastfeeding with implants would be possible. Then once baby arrived she was consumed with his needs and wondered if she would ever be able to juggle being a mum with working. She enjoys her work and didn't want to kiss it goodbye. But due to the complexities of the pandemic and Covid-19 restrictions heavily impacting the hair and beauty industry, Naomi wasn't sure if she'd ever see herself returning to work as a blow-dry professional.

"I have implants so I remember thinking I won't be able to feed...I had one client who had implants and they were blocking her ducts and she couldn't produce milk...it scared me a lot." Naomi Naomi's big talking points
  • Her experience of giving birth at the start of the pandemic
  • How her partner was instrumental in her decision to 'give breastfeeding a go'
  • Her experience of breastfeeding with implants and why she thought she might struggle
  • How she felt consumed with motherhood and found it difficult to multitask
  • The ups and downs of working in the hair industry during Covid-19 restrictions
  • How she motivated herself to complete a hair extension course during lockdown

Ep. 3: Avoiding the same breastfeeding mistakes with baby number 2

Ep. 3: Avoiding the same breastfeeding mistakes with baby number 2

In this episode of the podcast, I get to interview mama of two Jennifer, who just had her second baby a few months ago. She reflects on how different it has been breastfeeding her new baby girl Quinn and why she doesn't want to make the same breastfeeding mistakes second-time around.

Four years have passed since Jennifer fed her little boy Cooper and their breastfeeding journey wasn't always easy - you can read their breastfeeding story here. Whilst she admits to being more mentally prepared for breastfeeding this time, she has still done lots of googling and is working on perfecting the 'nose to nipple' latch technique! She also realises that whilst she's breastfed before, she has a brand new baby who has!

"Whenever I was going to breastfeed Quinn I wanted to make sure it was better than how I did with Cooper, in that any of the mistakes I made with him I didn't want to make them with Quinn." ~ Jennifer

Jennifer also opens up about the new challenge of juggling two children with very different needs, and how this has been made harder due to Covid-19 restrictions. She finishes off with some great advice on how to prepare her older child for their new sibling and seeing mummy breastfeed!

Jennifer's key talking points
  • The breastfeeding mistakes she feels she made as a first-time mum
  • How different it's been breastfeeding second-time around
  • Juggling the needs of a newborn and a four-year-old
  • How she helped prepare her son for his new baby sister and seeing mummy breastfeed
  • How the pandemic has affected her maternity leave and overall breastfeeding experience
  • The trials and tribulations of trying to get a boob-loving baby to take a bottle!

Ep. 2: Emma from @a_mothers_tale talks breastfeeding on social media

Ep. 2: Emma from @a_mothers_tale talks breastfeeding on social media

This week's guest is Emma from the hugely popular Instagram account @a_mothers_tale.  Emma lives in Scotland, is a mama of three boys, and is known for her real, honest, and often funny accounts of motherhood!

Emma is currently breastfeeding her youngest son and would regularly share their journey on her social media accounts. Back in September, she got the shock of her life when a video of her breastfeeding her boy on TikTok was taken down for ‘indecent exposure’ and she was blocked from the platform. Understandably, Emma is not taking this lying down and is now petitioning for change.

In this episode...

In this episode we talk about the breastfeeding video debacle on TikTok and why people's breastfeeding images and videos are so often removed from social media platforms on the basis of being unacceptable or offensive content. What do social media giants need to do to better protect and support people who choose to breastfeed? Emma talks about the power of community and how her followers are backing her to push for change and to normalise breastfeeding on social media and in public.

We also chat about Emma's recent bout of Mastitis which left her hospitalised and separated from her baby son due to Covid restrictions.  We look at why this shouldn't be happening and why again, change needs to occur. Emma reflects on how amazing her Instagram community are and how they've gotten her through these tough times and encouraged her 'not to quit on a bad day'.

Emma's key talking points
  • Feeding all three of her boys and how this third journey is her hardest yet
  • Coping with recurring mastitis and the trauma of being admitted to hospital and separated from her baby
  • The power of a social media community to inspire and empower people to breastfeed
  • Uncovering the lack of continuity around the treatment of breastfeeding images and videos on TikTok, Instagram and other social media platforms
  • The need for appropriate social media guidelines to support and protect breastfeeding people.
