An Interview with Linsey Miller
This week we welcome back our first ever returning guest, Linsey Miller, author of Mask of Shadows, Ruin of Stars, and the upcoming Belle Revolte which publishes in February 2020, so you’ll have to wait for it, book nerds. If you were a newsletter subscriber, you could’ve submitted a question to this interview with Linsey which, yes, we would’ve played on this episode. ***🌠***📚***🌌*** Belle Révolte Emilie des Marais is more at home holding scalpels than embroidery needles and is desperate to escape her noble roots to serve her country as a physician. But society dictates a noble lady cannot perform such gruesome work. Annette Boucher, overlooked and overworked by her family, wants more from life than her humble beginnings and is desperate to be trained in magic. So when a strange noble girl offers Annette the chance of a lifetime, she accepts. Emilie and Annette swap lives—Annette attends finishing school as a noble lady to be trained in the ways of divination, while Emilie enrolls to be a physician’s assistant, using her natural magical talent to save lives. But when their nation instigates a frivolous war, Emilie and Annette must work together to help the rebellion end a war that is based on lies. ***🌠***📚***🌌*** Connect with Booked All Night: Twitter . Facebook Sign Up for the Newsletter and get a heads up on who's coming to join us so you can ask your own questions. An Interview with Sarah Jean Horwitz
This episode we're joined by Sarah Jean Horwitz to talk about her new book The Dark Lord Clementine.  The new face of big evil is a little . . . small. Dastardly deeds aren’t exactly the first things that come to mind when one hears the name “Clementine,” but as the sole heir of the infamous Dark Lord Elithor, twelve-year-old Clementine Morcerous has been groomed since birth to be the best (worst?) Evil Overlord she can be. But everything changes the day the Dark Lord Elithor is cursed by a mysterious rival. Now, Clementine must not only search for a way to break the curse, but also take on the full responsibilities of the Dark Lord. As Clementine forms her first friendships, discovers more about her own magic than she ever dared to explore, and is called upon to break her father’s code of good and evil, she starts to question the very life she’s been fighting for. What if the Dark Lord Clementine doesn’t want to be dark after all? And, surprise: Moth’s family is at the center of it all! When Moth’s new powers show up, things get totally out-of-control. Testimony From Your Perfect Girl
Jess, Maggie, and now Dan, all talk about Kaui Hart Hemmings' TESTIMONY FROM YOUR PERFECT GIRL. Listen and enjoy as we discuss blow jobs in the woods, body positivity, and how beating up your friends is the best way to make a point.   Annie Tripp has everything she needs--Italian sweaters, vintage chandelier earrings, and elite ice skating lessons--but all that changes when her father is accused of scamming hundreds of people out of their investments. Annie knows her dad wasn't at fault, but she and her brother are exiled to their estranged aunt and uncle's house in a run-down part of Breckenridge--until the trial blows over.Life with her new family isn't quite up to Annie's usual standard of living, but surprisingly, pretending to be someone else offers a freedom she's never known. As Annie starts to make real friends for the first time, she realizes she has more in common with her aunt and uncle than she ever wanted to know. As the family's lies begin to crumble and truths demand consequences, Annie must decide which secrets need to see the light of day . . . and which are worth keeping.   Connect with Booked All Night: Twitter . Facebook Follow Jess: Twitter . Facebook Follow Maggie: Twitter Follow Dan: Twitter

An Interview with Ava Dellaira
Bet you thought the interviews were over AND YOU WERE WRONG! We're back this week with Ava Dellaira, author of Love Letters to the Dead and her newest book In Search of Us. We talked about her book, we talked about the 90s, we talked about how Jessica is going to burn any proof that she was ever photographed in the 90s ever.----more---- In Search of Us The author of the beloved Love Letters to the Dead returns with a parallel story of a mother and daughter each at age seventeen. Marilyn's tale recounts the summer she fell in love and set out on her own path. Angie's story is about her search for her unknown father. This sweeping multi-generational love story introduces readers to mother-and-daughter pair Marilyn and Angie. To seventeen-year-old Angie, who is mixed-race, Marilyn is her hardworking, devoted white single mother. But Marilyn was once young, too. When Marilyn was seventeen, she fell in love with Angie's father, James, who was African-American. But Angie's never met him, and Marilyn has always told her he died before she was born. When Angie discovers evidence of an uncle she's never met she starts to wonder: What if her dad is still alive, too? So she sets off on a journey to find him, hitching a ride to LA from her home in New Mexico with her ex-boyfriend, Sam. Along the way, she uncovers some hard truths about herself, her mother, and what truly happened to her father. BUY LINKSAmazon . Barnes&Noble . BooksAMillion Ava Dellaira I was born in Los Angeles. One of my first memories is of looking out the window of the black Cadillac that my family drove across the wide-open desert when we moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, which is where I grew up, and where my sister and I spent countless summer afternoons making fairy potions, battling evil witches, and playing other imaginary games that probably contributed to my proclivity to make up stories. An Interview with Chelsea Sedoti
It’s interview central around here this month! Joining us this week is Chelsea Sedoti, author of The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett and the recently released As You Wish. We had a wonderful discussion about anxiety and writing and how we all handle the pressure.----more----   As You Wish What if you could ask for anything- and get it?  In the sandy Mojave Desert, Madison is a small town on the road between nothing and nowhere. But Eldon wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, because in Madison, everyone gets one wish—and that wish always comes true. Some people wish for money, some people wish for love, but Eldon has seen how wishes have broken the people around him. And with the lives of his family and friends in chaos, he’s left with more questions than answers. Can he make their lives better? How can he be happy if the people around him aren’t? And what hope is there for any of them if happiness isn’t an achievable dream? Doubts build, leading Eldon to a more outlandish and scary thought: maybe you can’t wish for happiness…maybe, just maybe, you have to make it for yourself. BUY LINKSAmazon . Barnes&Noble . BooksAMillion Chelsea Sedoti I’ve lived in Las Vegas, Nevada for most of my life. It’s a weird place. I’m not a fan of casinos, but I love the Mojave Desert. I also love the woods and hills and dying steel mill towns of eastern Ohio, which is where my family is from. I wish I could split my time between both places. I have a nerdy-cool husband and a goofy dog and evil cat. I read a lot of books. I think Mad Men is the best show ever made. I rock climb, even though I’m afraid of heights. I would eat red velvet cupcakes from the Cupcakery every day if I could. One of my favorite things in the world is exploring abandoned places. I love writing because it lets me have adventures. I love writing because it is an adventure. That’s what you should know about me: I think everything should feel like an adventure. With a little effort, it can. An Interview with MarcyKate Connolly
This super special (totes late but you’ll love it) episode we were joined by none other than MarcyKate Connolly, author of Shadow Weaver, Monstrous, Ravenous, and more! If you’re unfamiliar with her work we highly recommend Shadow Weaver. You can, of course, listen to us gush over it in Episode #25 (which we also recommend). Join us as we talk about middle grade literature, writing, Shadow Weaver, and play a little game of Burn, Re-write, Re-Read.----more---- Shadow Weaver Fans of Serafina and the Black Cloak and The Night Gardener will devour Shadow Weaver, the first in a dark middle-grade fantasy duology that’s filled with shadows, danger, magic, and has the feel of a new classic. Emmeline’s gift of controlling shadows has isolated her from the rest of the world, but she’s grown to be content, hidden away in her mansion with Dar, her own shadow, as her only company. Disaster strikes when a noble family visits their home and offers to take Emmeline away and cure her of magic. Desperate not to lose her shadows, she turns to Dar who proposes a deal: Dar will change the noble’s mind, if Emmeline will help her become flesh as she once was. Emmeline agrees but the next morning the man in charge is in a coma and all that the witness saw was a long shadow with no one nearby to cast it. Scared to face punishment, Emmeline and Dar run away. With the noble’s guards on her trail, Emmeline’s only hope of clearing her name is to escape capture and perform the ritual that will set Dar free. But Emmeline’s not sure she can trust Dar anymore, and it’s hard to keep secrets from someone who can never leave your side. BUY LINKSAmazon . Barnes&Noble . Later in life, she graduated from Hampshire College (a magical place where they don’t give you grades) where she wrote an opera sequel to Hamlet as the equivalent of senior thesis. Double Feature
This week we saw a double feature of Love, Simon and A Wrinkle in Time. Do you like to read the book first? Have you ever watched the movie and then read the book? Well that’s what we did for this episode.----more---- Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised. With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met. A Wrinkle in Time It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger. “Wild nights are my glory,” the unearthly stranger told them. “I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me be on my way. Speaking of way, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract”. Meg’s father had been experimenting with this fifth dimension of time travel when he mysteriously disappeared. Now the time has come for Meg, her friend Calvin, and Charles Wallace to rescue him. But can they outwit the forces of evil they will encounter on their heart-stopping journey through space?   BUY LINKS Simon VS The Homo Sapiens AgendaAmazon . B&N . Now, Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. Granted
A dueling opinionated podcast! This week Jess and Maggie talk about Granted by John David Anderson (author of Ms. Bixby’s Last Day and Posted). Who will you agree with?----more---- Everyone who wishes upon a star, or a candle, or a penny thrown into a fountain knows that you’re not allowed to tell anyone what you’ve wished for. But even so, there is someone out there who hears it. In a magical land called the Haven lives a young fairy named Ophelia Delphinium Fidgets. Ophela is no ordinary fairy—she is a Granter: one of the select fairies whose job it is to venture out into the world and grant the wishes of unsuspecting humans every day. It’s the work of the Granters that generates the magic that allows the fairies to do what they do, and to keep the Haven hidden and safe. But with worldwide magic levels at an all-time low, this is not as easy as it sounds. On a typical day, only a small fraction of the millions of potential wishes gets granted. Today, however, is anything but typical. Because today, Ophelia is going to get her very first wish-granting assignment. And she’s about to discover that figuring out how to truly give someone what they want takes much more than a handful of fairy dust. GrantedAmazon . B&N Ms. Bixby’s Last DayAmazon . YA Movies Are in Decline?
Since the latest (and final) Maze Runner movie, The Death Cure, only grossed $23.5 million in its opening weekend, apparently that means that YA movies are a declining fad. Jess and Maggie have some thoughts on that, thoughts that include almost twenty five YA titles that were optioned for movies just this year, as well as books they would love to see get some screen adaptations. Preferably TV shows for Jess so she can spend the day watching an accurate 19 hour production.----more---- Other Books Mentioned in This Episode Children of Blood & Bone by Tomi Adeyemi: Amazon . Opening Lines
Jessi and Maggie discuss new beginnings and their favorite opening lines, with special guest stars Belle and Luka (who had a barking good time). Show Notes: “The screw through Cinder’s ankle had rusted, the engraved cross marks worn to a mangled circle.”Cinder by Marissa Meyer “The Ala had gone to the library in search of hope.”The Girl at Midnight by Melissa Grey “Not for the first time, an argument had broken out over breakfast at number four, Privet Drive.”Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets by JK Rowling “Mr. and Mrs. Dursley of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.”Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by JK Rowling “Nobody had ever told Kai that she should hold her breath when passing by a graveyard, but she did it anyway.”A Tale of Highly Unusual Magic by Lisa Papademetriou “I’ve watched through his eyes, I’ve listened through his ears, and I tell you he’s the one. Or at least as close as we’re going to get.”Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card “My mothing thinks I’m dead. Obviously, I’m not dead, but it’s safer for her to think so.” Legend by Marie Lu “There was a hand in the darkness, and it held a knife.”The Graveyard Book by Nail Gaiman “On the second Sabbat of Twelfth moon, in the city of Weep, a girl fell from the sky. Her skin was blue, her blood was red. She broke over an iron gate, crimping it on impact, and there she hung, impossibly arched, graceful as a temple dancer swooning on a lover’s arm.”Strange the Dreamer, Laini Taylor “There is one mirror in my house. It is behind a sliding panel in the hallway upstairs. Our faction allows me to stand in front of it on the second day of every third month, the day my mother cuts my hair.”Divergent by Veronica Roth “Everything had gone horribly wrong. None of Safiya fon Hasstrel’s hastily laid plans for this holdup were unfolding as they ought.”Truthwitch, Susan Dennard “I felt her fear before I heard her screams.”Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead “It’s finally happened, babies. Parole is burning. They say we started out in a blaze of glory, and now we’re all going down in flames.”Chameleon Moon, RoAna Sylver “When we got the letter in the post, my mother was ecstatic.”The Selection by Kiera Cass  “Kaye took another drag on her cigarette and dropped it into her mother’s beer bottle. She figured that would be a good test for how drunk Ellen was—see if she would swallow a butt whole.”Tithe, Holly Black “The second time I saw my dead Aunt Roasario, she was dancing.”Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova “Note to Self: I’m officially resigning from love. Time in a cell will do that to a kid. For the record: I didn’t do it.”The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora, Pablo Cartaya “My big brother reaches home in the dark hours before dawn, when even ghosts take their rest. He smells of steel and coal and forge. He smells of the enemy.”An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir “I rise to my feet when he lets me.”King’s Cage, Victoria Aveyard “My brother just killed me. Again.”Beyond the Red, Ava Jae Follow Magdalyn AnnBlog . Twitter . Facebook . Instagram Follow Jessica M TuckermanBlog . Twitter . Facebook . Instagram
