Join our Halloween-themed book club!

The podcast might be winding down at the end of the year, but we're still planning to fit in a couple more book club discussions, starting with a special Halloween-themed pick!

This month we're reading a graphic novel: Squad by Maggie Tokuda-Hall, illustrated by Lisa Sterle.

Here's what you need to know from the blurb:

Pretty Little Liars meets Teen Wolf in this sharply funny, and patriarchy-smashing graphic novel from author Maggie Tokuda-Hall and artist Lisa Sterle.

When the new girl is invited to join her high school’s most popular clique, she can’t believe her luck—and she can’t believe their secret, either.

When Becca transfers to a high school in an elite San Francisco suburb, she’s worried she’s not going to fit in. To her surprise, she’s immediately adopted by the most popular girls in school. At first glance, Marley, Arianna, and Mandy are perfect. But at a party under a full moon, Becca learns that they also have a big secret.

Becca’s new friends are werewolves. Their prey? Slimy boys who take advantage of unsuspecting girls. Eager to be accepted, Becca allows her friends to turn her into a werewolf, and finally, for the first time in her life, she feels like she truly belongs.

But then things get complicated. As their pack begins to buckle under the pressure, their moral high ground gets muddier and muddier—and Becca realizes that she might have feelings for one of her new best friends.

-----

The book club discussion will be released at the end of next week — just in time for the Halloween weekend!

There's no exaggeration in saying that Nickelodeon's 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' is one of the most popular animated shows of all time. For the generations that grew up with the show, it's a great time to be a fan. With more television series and movies on the horizon, there's a massive demand for Avatar content.

YA book author F. C. Yee knows all about it.

Yee has been part of the Avatar universe expansion since 2019, starting with the YA novel The Rise of Kyoshi. He joins us on this episode of the podcast to discuss his third Avatar novel, The Dawn of Yangchen. He shares some behind-the-scenes details about how the books came to be as well as his process of creating the characters and worldbuilding that fill the pages of his books.

Can we talk about 'Heartstopper'? (Spoilers!)

Netflix's 'Heartstopper' is taking the YA world by storm — and rightfully so!

The series, based on the popular webcomic-turned-graphic novel by Alice Oseman, is both enlightening and uplifting. The show highlights the love story between Charlie Spring and his classmate Nick Nelson while also diving into their wonderful cast of friends.

This charming show is too good! So the Bookstacked team had to turn on the mics to record a quick episode and geek about all things 'Heartstopper.'

Long-distance relationships and young romance in YA with Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka ('With and Without You')

By the time this YA novel begins, Siena and Patrick have already been dating for three years. With college in the near future, Siena is ready to let go and move on — to give herself a chance to grow. But before she can break up with Patrick, he breaks the news that he's moving out of state. Hoping that their relationship will break apart over time, Siena agrees to date long-distance ... which might have her re-thinking her feelings for Patrick altogether.

YA author duo Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka (#Wibbroka) explore the complexities of long-distance dating and young romance in their new YA novel, With and Without You. Being high school sweethearts who survived a long-distance relationship, you could call them experts on the subject!

Chronic illness and authenticity with Heather Kamins ('The Moth Girl')

Chronic illness and authenticity with Heather Kamins ('The Moth Girl')

Anna isn't unlike the other girls her age, except for her recent diagnosis: the fictional disease of lepidopsy. Suddenly, the life she once knew begins to drift away — literally. Her disease causes her to physically float, amidst other moth-like symptoms such as craving light. Now Anna is forced to come to terms with her new reality, while still trying to hold onto the life she's always known.

Such is the story found in the new YA novel The Moth Girl by Heather Kamins. Heather drew from her own experience with Lupus to write Anna's story — a story she started writing in 2012. For Heather, staying authentic to the true experiences of chronic illness was front and center of her mind.

Heather joins Bookstacked writer Chelsea Regan to discuss how she approached such an important topic.

Deborah talks about the importance of representation, diversity and her experience entering the YA book community.

And our final book club pick of the year is …

And our final book club pick of the year is …

We're closing out the year with a final book club pick: Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao.

As with all our book club picks, we're focusing on books that highlight underrepresented authors, characters and issues. We've already read two powerful books in 2021: Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas and Legendborn by Tracy Deonn.

We're excited to continue with this science-fiction YA novel from a debut author.

About Iron Widow:

The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain.

When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead.

To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed.

Do audiobooks count as reading?

Do audiobooks count as reading?

We're bringing the great debate to our podcast and asking the question, do audiobooks count as reading? Bookstacked writer Michael Burns dived into the history and culture around audiobooks in a recent article, and we decided to dissect it on the show.

When's the best time to listen to audiobooks? Is the audiobook ever better than the book itself? How much of an impact does a narrator have on an audiobook? What audiobook recommendations do we have? There's plenty to discuss in this episode!

Book Club: 'Legendborn' by Tracy Deonn

Bookmarked's YA Book Club is back, and this time we're venturing headfirst into one of last year's biggest fantasy novels: Legendborn by Tracy Deonn.

Legendborn has been at the top of numerous best-of lists and we're happy to report that the hype is real. This layered story breathes new air into Arthurian lore. With twists and turns at every corner, it's no wonder the book was a hit among the Bookstacked Team.

Introducing our Summer YA book club pick

Introducing our Summer YA book club pick

By way of information, we want to announce to our readers and listeners that we are continuing the Bookmarked YA Book Club we started earlier this year!

In February, we read Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas. We posted our status updates on Twitter and Instagram and then got members of the Bookstacked Team together to discuss the book on our podcast, Bookmarked. The podcast will continue as the home of the book club. We've settled on selecting four book club picks every year — one for each season. We missed out on Spring this year, but we're excited to jump into Summer with a new book club pick.

For the month of July, our book club pick is Legendborn by Tracy Deonn.

Here's how it works:

  • Members of the Bookstacked Team are already reading Legendborn. They'll be sharing their thoughts on the book via social media posts using #BookmarkedYA.
  • If you want to join our conversations, you can also post on Twitter and Instagram using #BookmarkedYA.
  • At the end of July, we'll drop a book club discussion episode in the Bookmarked podcast feed. #BookmarkedYA comments and posts from listeners and readers will be incorporated in the discussion (so be sure to post if you want your voice included in the episode!)

We'll see you in July!

About Legendborn:

After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC–Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape—until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus.

A flying demon feeding on human energies.

A secret society of so called “Legendborn” students that hunt the creatures down.

And a mysterious teenage mage who calls himself a “Merlin” and who attempts—and fails—to wipe Bree’s memory of everything she saw.

The mage’s failure unlocks Bree’s own unique magic and a buried memory with a hidden connection: the night her mother died, another Merlin was at the hospital. Now that Bree knows there’s more to her mother’s death than what’s on the police report, she’ll do whatever it takes to find out the truth, even if that means infiltrating the Legendborn as one of their initiates.

She recruits Nick, a self-exiled Legendborn with his own grudge against the group, and their reluctant partnership pulls them deeper into the society’s secrets—and closer to each other. But when the Legendborn reveal themselves as the descendants of King Arthur’s knights and explain that a magical war is coming, Bree has to decide how far she’ll go for the truth and whether she should use her magic to take the society down—or join the fight.

The biggest YA book takeaways from 2020

The biggest YA book takeaways from 2020

There's a lot to say about 2020. Like every other industry, publishing wasn't spared from the pandemic. Readers and authors around the world reckoned with the current events that shaped our lives.

As we say goodbye to 2020, we look back at some of the biggest changes and themes we saw in YA books and publishing as a whole. One thing is for certain: things definitely changed this year.

Support Us: You can support our show and website when you buy your YA books from our Bookshop storefront.

In this episode:

  • Thank you for the kind reviews and comments we've received in recent months!
  • Are we seeing less YA book movie adaptations? Are television adaptations the new endgame?
  • Book marketing has really transformed this year. There are some upsides and downsides.
  • Authors seem more accessible to international readers.
  • This was a tough year for anyone who loved BookCon and BookExpo. Will we ever see book conventions like these again?
  • Readers have been holding authors and publishers accountable — but that was even more true this year.
  • Everyone should reflect on the books they choose to promote and give prominence to.
