Born Wild Podcast

By Sophia Henderson and Lea Ritter

Conversations with Midwives surrounding pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

Wouldn't it be wild if there were no rules, we had true autonomy, and our loyalty was only to the families we serve? This is a safe space to process experiences without judgement. Questioning what it means to be midwives through continuous self reflection. Remembering what it means to be Born Wild.

PODCAST EPISODE - GINA MUNDY - CHILDBIRTH ATTORNEY #100

Join your hosts Lea and Sophia as they interview Gina Mundy, childbirth attorney. They discuss Gina's new book "A Parent's Guide to a Safer Childbirth" which supports families to educate themselves to create a safer environment for their births. They discuss medical advisors verse decision makers, lessons learned from her cases, how certain factors can improve outcomes like doulas and chiropractors. How certain factors like induction and busy hospital units can lead to poor outcomes. They also discuss how important it is to go into your birth educated and to be selective of your care providers.

Gina Mundy is an attorney specializing in childbirth cases. For over 20 years, her focus has been investigating and analyzing mistakes that arise during labor and delivery. She has spent countless hours meticulously scrutinizing childbirth cases, conducting interviews with delivery teams, and thoroughly
examining medical records to gain an in-depth understanding of every decision made during labor and delivery. Throughout her career Gina has traveled nationwide, engaging with
healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses, and midwives to explore all aspects of labor and delivery. These interactions have provided her with invaluable insights,
enabling her to appreciate the diverse perspectives prevalent in different regions of the country.

In June 2023, Gina's book "A Parent's Guide to a Safer Childbirth" was published. The book helps parents to avoid the mistakes during childbirth and have a healthy baby. Instead of getting involved after a mistake was made, Gina is getting involved before childbirth to help prevent the mistakes.

68: Stephanie Webb - ISR - Infant Swim Resource

Join your hosts Lea and Sophia as they interview Stephanie in safety swim. They discuss the safety protocols and the float, swim, breath holding rhythm.

Stephanie became aware of the ISR program after having almost lost her three year old daughter in a non-fatal drowning accident in her parent's pool.  Up until that time, her daughter had taken eight months of private and semi-private lessons at the local community center.  After her daughter's accident, Stephanie realized she had learned no actual safety skills or swimming techniques.  Her daughter learned that water could be fun, but not that it could be dangerous.  Play-based swim lessons only gave her a false sense of security in the water.  Three months later, Stephanie enrolled her in the ISR program, along with her one and a half year old baby brother.  She was worried about her daughter experiencing trauma getting her back in the water so soon after her accident, but after a couple weeks of tears and a bit of resistance her daughter started enjoying the water again as she learned how to float and swim independently.  Her young son also learned how to independently find his float and maintain that float by the end of the session.  It was an incredibly emotional process for the family, but so rewarding seeing her children master these incredible skills!

Stephanie wanted to make sure no parent ever had to reckon with a life or death drowning situation again in her community, so she became a Certified ISR Instructor in 2020.  Her favorite part of lessons is when parents get to swim with their children at the end of the session.  It all comes together for each family, and the children are so excited to show off their skills to their parents!

61: Sophia's Interview on Our Power is Within Podcast with Chazmith Newton

Sophia is interviewed on Our power is Within: “Sophia is a radical birth keeper and authentic Midwife. She is also my bestie. Sophia has her own midwifery practice in Sonoma County California. Prior to becoming a midwife she spent many years as a doula, helping to advocate for women's birthing experience. She empowers her families through extensive education, giving them choice, and encouraging them to make their own decisions around how they would like their pregnancy and birthing experience to be. She is a wife and mother of 2 children of her own. She shares with us today all about empowered birth, what that means, and how it can look. Often we don't even realize we have options and are able to make different choices, and today she talks about some of the choices we are actually able to make. She shares with us some of the lessons she learned through birthing her own two children, what she has learned over the years in her field and so much more.”
