Episode 26 : Part Two : The Cross of Redemption

Episode 26 : Part Two : The Cross of Redemption

In this week's talk, we are going to look at the following questions in light of Ephesians 1 :

+ What are we redeemed from through Christ?

+ To what purpose are we redeemed through Christ?

What does redeemed or redemption mean?

In it’s most simple definition, redeemed means to buy back, to recover, or regain possession.

In a more theology sense, having been saved or delivered from sin and its consequences. This is

definitely more than the meaning of redeeming coupons, lottery tickets, or credit card points.

Participate with our talk this week by using the Q&A feature within Spotify or send us a Messenger note through our Facebook page @SalArmyFortSmith.

Episode 18 : Part Four : The Gift of the Christ Child

Episode 18 : Part Four : The Gift of the Christ Child

We are only 5 days away from what is easily the most wonderful day of the entire calendar: the day we celebrate the coming of the Christ child. The ultimate gift to humanity. The gift that endures, the gift that is unending. Throughout this advent season we have looked at how the gift of the Christ Child brings unending Hope, Faith, Love, and Peace. I pray you have experienced each of those gifts of the Christ child this Advent season.

This morning we are looking at one more gift that the Christ child has for us. A gift that an angel announced to the shepherds in Luke 2:10 saying, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.’ The gift of unending Joy.

I think there is something significant about the fact that we reach this specific gift at a time in our Christmas season when we are nearing the end, with the demands and needs of the season weighing heavily upon us. If we are honest with ourselves, we might even admit that we are depleted of this gift of joy completely at this point in the season. But that is what is so incredible about our Savior: He was born into this weary world at the God ordained time to be our joy incarnate! Today the invitation for us is to rise above our circumstances and burdens, and to see with fresh eyes the unending joy that is experienced when we encounter the Christ child. #TheGiftoftheChristChild #Advent2020

Episode 18 : Part Three : The Gift of the Christ Child

Episode 18 : Part Three : The Gift of the Christ Child

This year marks the 55th year since the release of “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” For many, it’s become tradition to view the classic cartoon-movie, year after year. Some people are so endeared to the idea of a “Charlie Brown tree,” they put up their own little droopy tree (with one ornament and a blue, fleece, tree-skirt) at Christmas. It’s interesting that the cartoon’s inclusion of a direct quote from Luke’s gospel has sparked virtually no controversy, throughout its years of being shown on mainstream TV channels. Whether a person claims a faith in Christ or not, there seems to be a sense that the overall message portrayed by Charlie Brown and his friends holds applicational value for most anyone. It’s true every year, that if we lose sight of what really matters at Christmas, the season will inevitably be characterized by chaos, disappointment, exhaustion, joylessness, greed, divisiveness – and certainly, the absence of peace. Join us for part three as we dig into Psalm 91 and Luke 2 in a study to find true peace during this Advent Season. #TheGiftoftheChristChild #Peace

Christmas is the celebration of God’s love as the arrival of Jesus is the manifestation of God’s love. God's love is powerful and the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Episode 18 : Part One : The Gift of the Christ Child

Episode 18 : Part One : The Gift of the Christ Child

There is something magical about the childlike sense of expectation as gifts appear under the family Christmas tree. Curiosity ignites mischief as children spend hours shaking boxes, trying to decipher what’s inside each package. Expectancy keeps them awake on Christmas Eve waiting for sunrise to announce it’s finally Christmas! The color-coordinated wrapping paper is all that stands between them and their long-awaited Christmas wishes.

Today the expectancy of Christmas begins on the First Sunday of Advent as we unwrap gifts given to three individuals in the Bible.

Episode 17 : Part Two : The Search for Happiness

This three-week series is designed to highlight the relevant and important topics of happiness and contentment. Happiness means something different to different people. Many, in our modern society, attempt to “find” happiness through material possessions, a new job, or even a significant other. In the end, though, these things often leave us just as empty as we were before. ‘The Search for Happiness’ flips this approach on its head, detailing the importance of putting our focus on the person of Jesus, as well as our walk with Him. Episode 15 : Part 4 : Patient People Know There’s More To The Story

We all have pet peeves that we find annoying. But it’s a different story when something goes from annoying to hurtful. Whether it’s by someone close to you, or just an acquaintance, we all know what it feels like to be hurt by other people. In a perfect world, we can avoid that kind of relational pain altogether, but the truth is, these kinds of hurt are bound to happen. It’s inevitable. And when it happens, we are left with a decision: What do we do now? How are we going to respond? These past couple of weeks we’ve been looking at wisdom found in the book of Proverbs; wisdom that can help us live in a way that leads to less regret and an all-around better life. And the advice we’re talking about today has the potential to forever change the way we handle conflict with people around us. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, but if you commit to do this, you won’t regret it. Find out what patient people know this week, and see how it helps them to live a better story. #NowandLater #TheSalvationArmy

Episode 15 : Part 3 : The End You Want Tomorrow Is Connected To What You Do Today

Episode 15 : Part 3 : The End You Want Tomorrow Is Connected To What You Do Today

Some people are more prone to setting goals than others. In fact, some people are great at it. They have a list of what they want to accomplish and it happens. While others of us have that same list, but month after month, nothing moves off of that list. We spend more time talking about our goals than actually doing anything about them. So, what’s the problem? What needs to change? This week, we’re diving back into the book of Proverbs, and we’ll see that the author wrote about this exact topic. Humans have been struggling with setting and reaching goals for as long as we’ve been around. But that doesn’t have to be true of you anymore. The change starts when we realize how our tomorrow connects to our today—how our later begins now. #NowandLater #TheSalvationArmy

Episode 15 : Part 2 : A Good Reputation Is Good For You Now And Good For You Later

Episode 15 : Part 2 : A Good Reputation Is Good For You Now And Good For You Later

If we define reputation as what people generally think about us, that makes it a big deal. Yet, even though it’s directly tied to us, our reputation often feels like something that is largely out of our control. We started talking about this idea of now and later, and how pursuing wisdom in certain areas of our lives now will impact our lives for the better both now and later. And having a good reputation certainly fits into the category of something we want to do well now and in the future. There are a lot of things that make this complicated. Reputations can be good, bad, inaccurate, or completely out of our control. But if we can make decisions that affect the way others see us—more importantly, how they see God— then building a strong reputation is worth doing. In fact, we might say that a good reputation is good for us now and good for us later. #TheSalvationArmy #NowandLater

Episode 15 : Part 1 : Wisdom Now Can Help You Miss Mistakes Later

Episode 15 : Part 1 : Wisdom Now Can Help You Miss Mistakes Later

Life would be much easier if every situation was black and white, and there were clear solutions to every problem. However, we know life doesn’t work like that. In fact, life seems to be a lot more gray than most of us would prefer, which means making decisions isn’t as easy as we’d like. So, how do you make decisions when the answer isn’t obvious and when the way forward isn’t clear? A lot of it comes down to wisdom. But what exactly does wisdom look like in the gray areas of life? This question matters because wisdom is more than making decisions in our current situations. In fact, wisdom has an effect on our future situations as well. And that’s what we’re going to look at in this series. How do we use wisdom to make decisions now that will give us the outcome we want later. #NowandLater #TheSalvationArmy

Episode 14 : Part 4 : Making Space for Grace By Bradley Hargis

Episode 14 : Part 4 : Making Space for Grace By Bradley Hargis

If you’ve ever had a sales job, you know it brings on a unique kind of pressure. But even if you haven’t, you know the same feeling: If you have kids, you’re constantly trying to sell them—to do their homework, eat their vegetables, or clean their rooms. But even if you’re not a parent, we all grade ourselves on our ability to sell something: The carrot of “good enough” dangles just outside of our reach—In our jobs, church, or relationships. We remember very few moments when we actually stop, take a deep breath, and say: “I’m okay. I’m doing a good job.” Let’s face it. Most of us spend a good portion of our lives disappointed at ourselves. And when we’re disappointed at ourselves, we think God must be disappointed as well. But the reality isn’t like that. In fact, Jesus addressed this very issue and explained why we all need to make room for grace. #MakingSpace #TheSalvationArmy

Episode 14 : Part 3 : Making Space For Joy By Fighting For Joy by Bradley Hargis

Episode 14 : Part 3 : Making Space For Joy By Fighting For Joy by Bradley Hargis

Logically, we know that social media is just a highlight reel. Yet, as we scroll, we find ourselves wondering why everyone else seems so much happier than us. It’s hard not to compare. We know that most people live a very different life than what they portray online. But even though we know this, it can still strike a chord with us. Why do they have joy and we don’t? And it’s interesting that as Christians, this longing for a joyful life is even more profound. Because we don’t just desire joy, do we? No, we expect it. As people who choose to follow Jesus, we can believe that joy should be a natural byproduct of that choice. But what if there’s a different way to view joy? What if we’re using the wrong standard to measure contentment? What if—and this a big what if—we can actually choose joy? #MakingSpace #LiveABetterStory

Episode 13 : Part 1 : Making Space for Self-Care By Quartlan Phillips

If you have a vehicle, when is the last time you got the oil changed? Even if you’re not the person in your family who takes care of the cars, or if you don’t drive, most of us understand the concept of an oil change: It’s when we replace old oil with fresh oil in a car’s engine. Maybe you even change the oil yourself! It’s a responsibility when we have vehicles. We also know that when we take our vehicles in for an oil change, there’s a good chance that the mechanic might suggest we do something else for the care of the car. And that naturally leads to one question: How much is this going to cost? Even if we know our trusted mechanic is just trying to help us take better care of our cars, we all balk at the costs. That same attitude often affects the way we take care of ourselves. As we’ll see this week, if we are only doing the bare minimum in our personal lives, it’s only a matter of time before something goes wrong with us. #Making Space
