S3 E9: Strategies for Achieving Net Zero: The Key Themes of Energy Transition w/ Hillary Stevenson

S3 E9: Strategies for Achieving Net Zero: The Key Themes of Energy Transition w/ Hillary Stevenson

In the ninth episode of Season 3, Hillary Stevenson  - Energy Enthusiast | Senior Advisor, Crude Markets @Validere talks us through what’s for lunch in the crude market and how to develop and implement a sustainability strategy.

The total value of global carbon markets grew by over 20 percent in 2020—the fourth consecutive year of record growth. Compliance carbon markets (CCMs), where mandatory national, regional, or international regimes trade and regulate carbon allowances, play an increasingly visible role in efforts to reduce emissions.

  • As the drive to curb global warming gathers pace, carbon markets have become increasingly fundamental to achieving net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions.
  • One of the central questions top of mind for energy companies revolves around planning for tomorrow in light of the dynamic nature of those markets and technologies today.

This is a great episode if you are interested in to the energy transition and need to develop a sustainable strategy for your company!

Hillary Stevenson is the Senior Advisor, Crude Markets at Validere. With more than a decade of experience in oil market analysis, Hillary works closely with sales, product, services, and marketing to pair Validere solutions with customer needs to remove friction and add value in both supply chain operations and ESG initiatives.

Hillary is a subject matter expert on crude oil trends and their impact on the North American crude oil supply chain, with particular expertise in Cushing oil storage, North American refining, and pipeline networks.

Early in her career at Genscape, Hillary developed and deployed the industry’s first remote sensor surveillance network to provide never-before-seen granularity and transparency into crude oil supply and demand.

Outside of work, Hillary actively participates in community engagement work and volunteers with Clothe the West, a mutual aid organization benefiting BIPOC children. She loves to cook, golf, practice yoga, and play pickleball.

Her vision for the future is one where we have transparency into our energy supply and that our energy supply sustainably supports human prosperity. A future where data and facts inform consumer energy choices.

Validere is a measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) SaaS company that helps energy organizations transform disconnected, incomplete data into clear and immediately actionable pathways to financial and environmental value.

S3 E6: How to achieve sustainable success using Flow w/ Kristel Tuul

S3 E6: How to achieve sustainable success using Flow w/ Kristel Tuul

In the sixth episode of Season 3, Kristel Tuul - a certified high-performance coach walks us through the concept of FLOW.

Kristel is a certified women's high-performance coach. Before that, she was the head of digital growth and performance at CHOOOSE, a climate action tech platform, ran her own tech startup as head of sales and marketing, and did door-to-door sales for 6 years in the USA and Canada.

Kristel helps female leaders & entrepreneurs become wildly successful while having more time for themselves. Her approach is science-backed and holistic where she helps women make their mindset, biology, and environment work for them.

Flow is a state of mind in which a person becomes fully immersed in an activity. Positive psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi describes flow as a state of complete immersion in an activity. Being immersed can be defined as a state of focus in which a person is completely absorbed and engrossed in their work.

While in a flow state, people are highly involved and focused on what they are doing.

The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you're using your skills to the utmost," Csíkszentmihályi said in an interview with Wired magazine

This is a great episode if you want to learn how to get into a FLOW state and learn to manage your energy and not time.

In this last episode for Season 1, I speak with Christina Gravert, Behavioral economist I Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Copenhagen I Co-founder impactually

This episode is all about how to increase the welfare of individuals and society through behavioral insights and evidence-based decision-making using nudging.

The thriving field of behavioral science has produced a wealth of insights into how to “nudge” people with gentle pushes that can add up to a big impact.

We should mention that the term “nudge” was coined by two leaders in this field, Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein.   In fact, they wrote the book on it–Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth, and Happiness.

The easiest to explain a nudge to people is that it is a small discrete intervention that is inspired by insights uncovered through our understanding of human behavior.

Christina walks us through her path to becoming a behavioral scientist. We further talk about what strategies and concepts companies and you can use when designing a  positive nudge?

S1 E9: Who Needs Smart Cities for Sustainable Development w/ Amy Zhuo

S1 E9: Who Needs Smart Cities for Sustainable Development w/ Amy Zhuo

Smart solutions can enhance various aspects of the quality of life in cities. For instance, smart cities are a solution to urbanization and global climate change.

Smart cities can use smart technologies to improve some key quality-of-life indicators by 10 to 30 percent—numbers that translate into lives saved, fewer crime incidents, shorter commutes, a reduced health burden, and carbon emissions averted.

Smart cities are all about data and technology for better decision-making. To watch events as they happen, getting deep insights into demand patterns enhances the ability to respond with lower-cost solutions for public infrastructure (schools, community buildings, libraries etc).

In this episode, I speak with Amy Zhuo, Vice President - Timberline Real Estate Partners about her journey into the world of equity finance and her mission to combat poverty by building smart cities around the globe.

Amy shares some great recommendations on how to overcome imposter syndrome and build more confidence as women in finance.

I hope you enjoy this episode!

S1 E7: How to design tech for good causes w/ Elinor Samuelsson

S1 E7: How to design tech for good causes w/ Elinor Samuelsson

The United Nations defines violence against women as "any act of gender-based violence that results in or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.

Violence against women – particularly intimate partner violence and sexual violence – is a major public health problem and a violation of women's human rights.

Estimates published by WHO indicate that globally about 1 in 3 (30%) of women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.

In this episode, I speak with the founder of BrightAct, Elinor Samuelsson about how to design tech for good causes. BrightAct uses thoughtful tech to address domestic violence, globally. Elinor shares the inspiring journey that led her to become a successful female entrepreneur.

S1 E6: How to build resilience factors to prevent child trafficking w/ Dr. Hartini Zainundin

S1 E6: How to build resilience factors to prevent child trafficking w/ Dr. Hartini Zainundin

In 2018 about 50,000 human trafficking victims were reported which is likely to be much higher given the hidden nature of this crime.

Particularly, the most vulnerable, the children are affected. The share of small individuals has tripled with girls being the most affected group.

Millions of women, children and men worldwide are out of work, out of school and without social support in the continuing COVID-19 crisis, leaving them at greater risk of human trafficking. We need targeted action to stop criminal traffickers from taking advantage of the pandemic to exploit the vulnerable

Child trafficking is child abuse. It's defined as recruiting, moving, receiving, and harboring children for the purpose of exploitation.  In this episode, I speak with Dr. Hartini Zainundin - child activist, consultant for UN organizations and co-founder of Yayasan Chow Kit (formerly known as NurSalam).

Hartini shares her path and passion to becoming a child activist while living in NYC and walks us through the biggest problems that NGOs, social organizations and activists face trying to combat child trafficking.

I hope you find this episode insightful and encouraging to protect the smallest of our societal members.

S1 E5 How diversity can drive innovation and digitalisation w/ Nada Ahmed

S1 E5 How diversity can drive innovation and digitalisation w/ Nada Ahmed

The last 50 years have seen a dramatic shift in traditional family roles. As a result, women are in a stronger position than ever to lead, shape and transform the economic, social, and political landscape. Yet, despite these positive leadership changes, women are still being under-represented in the workplace. Just 12% of board seats are held by women globally, with a mere 4% leading the world’s top 500 businesses as CEOs.

Especially, in the tech sector, women are a rare find. They constitute only about one-quarter of the tech workforce which becomes even less in tech leadership roles. Creating an inclusive environment and developing talent pipelines are key to changing that.

In this episode, I have a conversation with Nada Ahmed, VP Transformation at Aker solutions | Board member | Top 50 Women in Tech 2020.

Nada talks about her journey and interest that lead to becoming a VP for Digital Transformation in the energy sector. Aker Solutions ****enables low-carbon oil and gas production and develops renewable solutions to meet future energy needs.

In the conversation, we focus on how digital transformation provides opportunities for inclusion and vice versa. We touch upon diversity and inclusion strategies that work to tackle the problem.

Nada shares some great insights and ends with personal recommendations that stem from challenges she had to overcome in her career journey.

S1 E4: How to overcome the gender gap in digital literacy in Pakistan w/ Amna Habiba

S1 E4: How to overcome the gender gap in digital literacy in Pakistan w/ Amna Habiba

Stark gender differentials hinder women from achieving their full potential. Digital literacy and promoting mental well-being at a young age can make all the difference.

In the fourth episode of Season 1, I have a conversation with Amna Habiba, co-founder of the Global Creative Hub about the power of EdTech and mental well-being initiatives to help young girls develop the 21-century skills needed to harness the power of tech.

Amna talks about how the Covid-19 pandemic has started her journey as a young founder of a social enterprise that aims to build capacity for every Pakistani girl and provide them in-demand skills of entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and personal development.

Amna Habiba is a 15-year-old Pakistani, founder of Global Creative Hub, international speaker, STEM enthusiast, and an advocate for girls' education and mental health. She received the Young Achiever Award at the age of 10 as the first Pakistani to participate in a digital exchange. During the lockdown, she completed several courses to upskill herself. To give back to her community, she launched Global Creative Hub, a social development initiative that aims to make every Pakistani girl capable of the future of work. Amna has spoken at global platforms including World Bank, WomenTech Network, and more, and advocates for #stemforgirls and #youthvoices. She believes in creating an equal world for all and has been working with various non-profit organizations to raise literacy awareness. Visit her website for more details.

S1 E3: SuperCoop - how to shape a sustainable food retail industry w/ Johanna Kühner

S1 E3: SuperCoop - how to shape a sustainable food retail industry w/ Johanna Kühner

Global demand for agricultural production is expected to grow by 70 percent by the year 2050, and average per capita caloric intake globally is projected to increase by about 40 percent.

The problem is that global food production already utilizes about 50 percent of the earth’s available arable land, and the global agricultural sector consumes about 70 percent of the freshwater available for human use.

Ninety percent of the top 50 global grocery retailers market their own private-brand organic products
. In their annual reports, 82 percent of grocery retail chief executive officers cite sustainability as a key priority. More than one in three has opened “green” pilot stores.

Nevertheless, the reality behind these flagship initiatives continues to be largely “unsustainable.” While sustainability now routinely figures in evaluating investment decisions and corporate projects, it’s had little effect on the key commercial activities of the business – buying, store operations, or supply-chain decisions.

SuperCoop is an innovative supermarket and conceptualises how a sustainable supermarket can look like!

SuperCoop is governed by its members. Only a few full time employees take care of the coordination and sourcing.

3H PER MONTH

The key to our collective success: Every member works 3h/month and can co-design the supermarket through democratic governance.

TRANSPARENCY

SuperCoop empowers its members through transparent sourcing, management and clear labeling.

S1 E2: How to shape social entrepreneurship in emerging countries w/ Nurfarini Daing

S1 E2: How to shape social entrepreneurship in emerging countries w/ Nurfarini Daing

Malaysia has made considerable progress but remains a middle-income country and was struggling to achieve its aspiration of becoming a high-income nation by 2020. To jump-start the effort, Malaysia announced in January 2010 its Government Transformation Programme (GTP), aimed at delivering big results fast in the public services that were most important to the people.

There is an increasing number of supporting intermediaries such as myHarapan, iM4U, Impact Hub, Tandemic, Social Enterprise Alliance and local universities are actively creating awareness on social enterprise and supporting the community with various social entrepreneurship activities. Nevertheless, only 0.02% of Malaysians are working in social enterprises in comparison to 1.5% of China’s working population is working in social enterprises. Therefore, integrated efforts from various agencies are needed to educate the public and the community on the importance and potential of the social enterprise sector in promoting national sustainable socio-economic development.

With my guest Nurfarini Daing (Nini), CEO of
myHarapan, we speak about the challenges to shape social entrepreneurship in Malaysia and the impact myHarapan is able to have on women's well-being. Nini shares her recommendations on what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur with a social mission and what policies are needed to unlock the potential in young entrepreneurs.

Listen to this great episode to get unique insights into a rising sector in Malaysia and be prepared to be inspired when Nini shares some of her wisdom from running a company, being a mother and teacher. Enjoy!
