A Storm Is Coming

A Storm Is Coming

In our latest episode of Money Therapy, we explore our participation and weather and what that can teach us about investing. Join hosts Bill Magill and Brandan Chasteen, CFP® as they discuss preparation versus control!

The episode begins with a candid exploration of the human tendency to seek control over unpredictable forces, drawing parallels between our attempts to control the weather and our aspirations to master the financial markets. Despite our best efforts, both realms remain largely beyond our influence, governed by complex and unpredictable dynamics.

Amidst recent market fluctuations and uncertainties, questions abound regarding the nature and extent of our control over financial outcomes. Is the current pullback merely a temporary setback, or the harbinger of a more significant correction? Bill and Brandan acknowledge the inherent unpredictability of markets, emphasizing the futility of attempting to control their every twist and turn.

Drawing inspiration from the analogy of weather control, Brandan and Bill challenge listeners to shift their focus from control to preparation, reframing their approach to wealth management. Just as we adapt to weather conditions by preparing ourselves and our environments, so too can we prepare for financial challenges and opportunities.

Key to this preparation is a holistic view of wealth management, encompassing strategies to increase cash flow, enhance net worth, and fortify financial defenses. By prioritizing these areas of focus, individuals can cultivate resilience and adaptability in the face of market volatility, ultimately steering their financial futures with greater confidence and clarity.

Throughout the episode, Bill and Brandan underscore the importance of personalized approaches to wealth management, recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Individuals can chart their unique paths to financial success through self-directed investments, diversified portfolios, or professional guidance, embracing preparation as their guiding principle.

As the episode concludes, listeners are encouraged to embrace a mindset of preparation, recognizing the inherent uncertainties of financial markets while empowering themselves to take proactive steps toward their financial goals. By relinquishing the illusion of control and embracing the power of preparation, individuals can navigate the complexities of wealth creation with resilience, confidence, and purpose.

Bringing Debt Into Marriage

Bringing Debt Into Marriage

In our latest episode of Money Therapy, we discuss bringing debt into marriage and how it impacts individuals' sense of self-worth and value within the relationship. Join Bill Magill and Brandan Chasteen as they explore practical tips and insights to navigate this common challenge shame and grace can impose on love, joy and unity.

Marriage often brings together individuals with different financial backgrounds and levels of debt. While love and hope are central to any marriage, the presence of debt can evoke feelings of shame and guilt, undermining one's sense of worthiness in the relationship.

We address these feelings head-on and discuss strategies to overcome them.

One key takeaway is the recognition that each partner brings a wealth of value to the relationship beyond financial considerations. Despite any debt they may carry, individuals contribute love, joy, and support to their spouse, forming the foundation of a strong and resilient partnership.

By approaching debt repayment as a shared journey, couples can leverage their collective resources and tackle financial challenges together, strengthening their bond in the process.

Additionally, we explore the topic of prenuptial agreements and dispel common misconceptions surrounding their use. Rather than viewing prenups as a sign of distrust or predestination, we highlight their role as a practical tool for financial planning and risk management. Just as one would wear a seat belt or purchase life insurance, a prenup can provide peace of mind and clarity in navigating the uncertainties of life.

Join us as we navigate the complexities of debt in marriage and empower couples to build a strong financial foundation based on love, unity, and mutual support. Tune in to Money Therapy and embark on the journey towards a harmonious and financially secure partnership!

Are you TRYING? STOP TRYING!!!

Are you TRYING? STOP TRYING!!!

In our latest episode of Money Therapy, Brandan Chasteen discusses the power of belief versus the endless and catastrophic pursuit of "trying harder."

Drawing from a wealth of experience and insights, Brandan explores how focusing on beliefs, values, and personal growth can lead to greater success and fulfillment than focusing on skills, tools, and trying harder.

Brandan challenges the conventional wisdom that success is solely determined by effort and hard work. Instead, he suggests that true success lies in cultivating the right mindset and belief system. By shifting our focus from trying harder to improving ourselves and upgrading our beliefs, we can unlock our full potential and achieve remarkable results with less effort.

Using analogies such as the laws of energy and the concept of strapping a jet engine to a car, Brandan illustrates how maximum effort on a flawed foundation yields minimal output. He emphasizes the importance of challenging and eliminating limiting beliefs, embracing an abundance mindset, and fostering personal growth as essential steps toward success.

Join us on this thought-provoking journey as we explore the power of belief in shaping our outcomes and discover how to master success by focusing on the right mindset. Tune in to Money Therapy and take the first step towards achieving your goals with ease and confidence!

The Power of BELIEF

The Power of BELIEF

In our latest episode of Money Therapy, Bill Magill and Brandan Chasteen, CFP® dive deep into the profound impact of belief systems on our lives, particularly when it comes to financial success.

Brandan shares insights gained from decades of leadership experience, highlighting how our beliefs can either empower us to reach our goals or act as barriers to our success.

Throughout the episode, Brandan challenges listeners to examine their own belief systems and question whether they are serving them well. He emphasizes that many of us are victims of our own limiting beliefs, which can hinder our progress in achieving peace, prosperity, health, wealth, and freedom.

Drawing from personal anecdotes and real-life examples, Brandan explores the interconnectedness of beliefs and behaviors, challenging the notion that success is solely determined by external factors. He proposes a paradigm shift, urging listeners to prioritize the cultivation of healthy beliefs over merely changing behaviors.

By focusing on the inputs rather than the outputs, Brandan argues, individuals can unlock their true potential and achieve remarkable results with less effort and stress. He introduces practical strategies for identifying and challenging limiting beliefs, paving the way for personal transformation and growth.

Finance Isn’t Taught in Schools… Nor Should It Be!!!

Finance Isn’t Taught in Schools… Nor Should It Be!!!

In our latest episode of Money Therapy, Bill Magill and Brandan Chasteen, CFP, dive into a thought-provoking discussion about the role of financial education in schools versus the home.

We explore a viral story of a teacher who has established a 'classroom economy' using Monopoly money in hopes of teaching kids all they need to know about money... and people love it! Well, everyone except Brandan.

While it's true that most schools lack comprehensive financial literacy programs, Brandan argues that this is not necessarily a problem. In fact, he goes as far as to suggest that financial education should not be taught in schools at all.

Instead, Brandan believes that financial education is a responsibility that starts at home. He emphasizes the importance of instilling financial values and principles within the family unit, where children can learn about money in the context of real-life experiences and family dynamics.

Throughout the episode, Brandan challenges parents to take ownership of their children's financial education and stop relying on schools to fill the gap. By teaching money management skills at a young age and integrating financial discussions into everyday life, parents can empower their children to develop a healthy relationship with money and set them on the path to financial success.

Join us as we explore the transformative power of family-centered financial education and discover practical strategies for raising financially savvy kids. Tune in to Money Therapy and learn how to lay the foundation for a lifetime of financial well-being!

6 Obstacles Keeping You From Growing Your Wealth

6 Obstacles Keeping You From Growing Your Wealth

In our latest episode of Money Therapy, we're tackling the six most common obstacles that may be standing in the way of your journey to financial growth and success. Building wealth is a noble pursuit, but it's essential to recognize and address the roadblocks that can impede your progress.

  1. Inflation: Inflation erodes the purchasing power of your money over time, making it crucial to invest wisely to stay ahead of rising prices.

  1. Debt: High levels of debt can weigh you down financially, hindering your ability to build wealth. By developing a debt repayment plan and avoiding unnecessary debt, you can free up more resources for saving and investing.

  1. Stagnant Wages: Despite working hard, stagnant wages can make it challenging to accumulate wealth. Consider negotiating for higher pay, acquiring new skills, or exploring additional income streams to boost your earning potential.

  1. Lifestyle Creep: As your income increases, it's easy to succumb to lifestyle inflation and spend more on non-essential items. Combat lifestyle creep by setting clear spending boundaries and prioritizing savings and investments.

  1. Cost of Dependents: Whether it's children or aging parents, dependents can significantly impact your financial situation. Plan ahead for their financial needs and consider how they may affect your long-term financial goals.

  1. Lack of Financial Literacy: Many individuals struggle to navigate the complex world of personal finance due to a lack of knowledge. Take steps to improve your financial literacy by seeking out educational resources, working with a financial advisor, or attending financial literacy workshops.

Tune in to this episode of Money Therapy to learn practical strategies for overcoming these obstacles and accelerating your journey to wealth growth. Don't let these challenges hold you back; empower yourself with the tools and knowledge needed to achieve financial success.

🎙️Ask the Right Questions🎙️

🎙️Ask the Right Questions🎙️

In this episode of Money Therapy, we're challenging the conventional wisdom surrounding market fluctuations and account values. While it's common to obsess over market volatility and portfolio performance, our focus may be misplaced.

We've been conditioned to prioritize the ebbs and flows of the markets, often leading to heightened anxiety and fear. However, this fixation on market movements distracts us from more pressing concerns that we have control over and can significantly impact our lives.

During conversations with my wealthiest clients, I've noticed a distinct shift in priorities. Instead of fixating on portfolio performance during turbulent market cycles, they're more interested in maximizing cash flow and building sustainable passive income streams.

The truth is, we often aren't asking the right questions. Rather than dwelling on market volatility, we should be focusing on actionable steps to enhance our financial well-being. By asking questions like, "How can I increase cash flow?" or "Is my passive income growing steadily?" we can shift our mindset towards empowerment and proactivity.

Join us as we explore the transformative power of asking the right questions and how it can lead to greater financial confidence and success. Tune in to this episode of Money Therapy to learn how to take control of your financial future and build a life of abundance and fulfillment.

📈 Normal Market Rhythms: Navigating Volatility with Confidence 📈

📈 Normal Market Rhythms: Navigating Volatility with Confidence 📈

In our latest episode of Money Therapy, we're diving deep into the concept of "Normal Market Rhythms" and the crucial role they play in investment behavior. While the fundamental principle of buying low and selling high is widely known, it's essential to recognize that markets don't move in a straight line.

In today's fast-paced world of news and media cycles, there's a tendency to sensationalize market fluctuations, portraying them as unprecedented disasters. However, research indicates that markets experience multiple pullbacks and corrections nearly every year. Rather than succumbing to fear-mongering tactics, it's crucial to understand that volatility is a natural and necessary aspect of market functioning. While everyone loses their minds to the headline of “Stock Market Crash”, we can tactically start buying assets at a MAJOR discount.

Just like the ebb and flow of waves in the ocean, market fluctuations are a healthy and integral part of the investment landscape. Instead of viewing volatility as a threat, we should embrace it as an opportunity.

Our episode serves as a reminder to investors to maintain perspective and confidence during market downturns. By understanding what is normal, we can resist the urge to react impulsively and instead make informed decisions. It's during times of market turbulence that opportunities often arise, allowing savvy investors to capitalize on undervalued assets and position themselves for long-term success.

Tune in to this episode of Money Therapy to gain insights into navigating market volatility with confidence and learn how to capitalize on the opportunities presented by normal market rhythms. Don't let fear dictate your investment decisions; empower yourself with knowledge and strategy.

Overcoming Financial Anxiety: Steps to Take Control of Your Money

Overcoming Financial Anxiety: Steps to Take Control of Your Money

3 types of people:

1. Person number one - Perhaps you just can’t figure out how to make ends meet. The idea of living paycheck to paycheck to you is just hoping you don’t run out completely before the next paycheck hits. Every turn, every corner of life is traumatic because you cannot afford anything else going wrong.

2. Person number two - You’ve been at it a while and things are starting to seem a little easier. You have enough for savings now and you feel good about the income you have… you are probably in a place where you are making more than you ever thought you would (and can’t even figure out how you made it this far in life with the ‘less’ you were living on before). Kids are in the final years of living at home or just moved out to start their journey. You feel good about what you have but overwhelmed when you pass to think about what is next. Your brain constantly suggests you are so far behind and probably never going to catch up.

3. Person number three - Finally, you’ve made it… You are at a point now where you are ‘work optional’… but only by the skin of your teeth. Now the fear has changed from “When will I make it?” to “When will I mess this up?”. You live every day thinking about that one mistake, misstep, or economic downturn that will derail everything forcing a burdensome reliance on your children one day down the road.

Can you see that it really doesn’t matter where you are in life… Anxiety just exists in us. Especially when we let it take root in our brain our entire life!

We have to realize that our circumstances will not eliminate our anxiety. If anything, our circumstance just changes the voice of anxiety.

I am the only agent that can reduce or eliminate anxiety in me and how I control it in my life.

This episode is for you if you can identify with one of the avatars I created above. If you constantly fear falling behind or feel like you're just one mistake away from financial failure, then listen and subscribe now!

Join us as we discuss financial anxiety and provide you with practical steps to overcome it.

Don't let financial anxiety rule your life any longer – take action to overcome it today.

Are you ready to break free from these limiting beliefs and embrace a new perspective on time and money? Join us as we explore these myths, challenge the status quo, and pave the way to financial success and happiness. Your focus can change your life, so let's focus on truth, abundance, and a brighter future together.

Humans are remarkable creatures, but we have a quirk that can either propel us to financial success or lead us into treacherous waters. It's called Recency Bias, and it's a cognitive hiccup that can significantly impact our decisions.

In the fast-paced world of today, our perception of the "recent past" has shrunk to alarming proportions. What used to encompass a few years can now feel as short as a matter of minutes, thanks to the relentless news cycle.

When times are tough, we often catastrophize and believe that the bad days will stretch into eternity. Conversely, when we're riding high, we can't fathom a future without abundance.

Join us in this eye-opening episode of Money Therapy, where hosts Brandan Chasteen and Bill Magill delve into the intriguing world of Recency Bias. They reveal how this phenomenon can wreak havoc on your financial decisions and, more importantly, how to combat it effectively.

The solution? Expand your perception of the "recent past." By extending our memory beyond the fleeting attention span of a goldfish, we can learn from history rather than be doomed to repeat it. Discover how lengthening your view of the past can empower you to make more informed choices in every aspect of your life, from your investments to your personal relationships.

🎙️ Try These 3 Things to 💰Buy💰 Happiness 🎙️

🎙️ Try These 3 Things to 💰Buy💰 Happiness 🎙️

Is the age-old adage "money can't buy happiness" really true? Recent scientific research challenges this notion. It's not about the amount of money you have; it's about how you use it. In this enlightening episode, we delve into three proven strategies, backed by scientific findings, that can genuinely maximize your happiness:

1. Buy Time, Not Just Things

  • Science: Research by Harvard Business School's Michael Norton and Ashley Whillans reveals that investing in time-saving services, such as hiring help for household chores, significantly boosts overall happiness. It helps shield us from the time-famine of modern life. "Spending money on time-saving purchases has similar benefits for happiness as having more money," notes Whillans.

2. Invest in Experiences, Not Possessions

  • Science: While material possessions provide fleeting joy, investing in experiences can bring enduring happiness. According to Norton, experiences offer happiness at multiple stages: you anticipate them, enjoy them, and create lasting memories. Studies show that shared experiences with loved ones can significantly elevate happiness levels.

3. Spend Money on Others

  • Science: The act of giving can lead to increased happiness, regardless of your income. One study even found that people who bought coffee for others, including strangers, reported feeling happier afterward than those who bought coffee for themselves. As Norton suggests, the key factor is sharing these experiences with others.

In the grand scheme of things, accumulating more possessions may not necessarily make you happier. The concept of Marginal Utility, derived from economic theory, highlights that the satisfaction we gain from each additional unit of consumption decreases over time. Striking a balance between sharing and self-indulgence is essential for a holistic approach to wealth and happiness.

Would you like to explore these strategies further and understand how to apply them to your financial plan? Let's discuss this during our next meeting. As we journey into 2024, let's use the science of happiness to make it a year filled with fulfillment and joy. Tune in now to uncover the secrets of how money can indeed buy happiness! 🚀💰🌞

🎙️ Do You PREPARE Your Taxes OR Do You PLAN Your Taxes??? 💰

🎙️ Do You PREPARE Your Taxes OR Do You PLAN Your Taxes??? 💰

Ben Franklin once quipped, "In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes."

We've all felt the sting of taxes.

Here are a couple more of my favorite quotes on taxes:

“It is a good thing that we do not get as much government as we pay for." - Will Rogers

“Taxation with representation ain’t so hot either." - Gerald Barzan

"A tax is a fine for doing well. A fine is a tax for doing wrong." - Mark Twain

This year, let's rewrite the script and make 2024 all about proactive financial action.

📝 Tax Planning Beyond the Filing Season 📝

Here's a 2024 checklist for financial success (take a listen to here Bill and I discuss it):

Maximize Retirement Contributions: Ensure you've maxed out contributions to your retirement accounts, from IRAs to Solo 401(k)s. If you haven't, make it a top priority.

Start Tax Prep Early: Gather your tax-related documents now. Being organized from the outset sets the stage for a hassle-free tax season.

Review Past Tax Activities: Reflect on your previous tax year. Learn from past experiences, whether it's Qualified Charitable Distributions or rollovers.

Tax Return Review: Dive into your previous tax returns. Seek opportunities to optimize your tax strategy for better outcomes.

Stay Current with Estimated Taxes: Stay ahead of the curve by making regular estimated tax payments throughout the year. It ensures you meet IRS obligations without surprises.

Learn from Last Year: Adjust your financial plans based on last year's tax returns. These insights can reshape your tax situation and financial goals.

Cash Flow Planning: Conduct a comprehensive cash flow analysis. Ensure your spending aligns with your financial objectives, especially those tied to retirement planning.

Taking these steps positions you proactively for informed financial decisions throughout the year. It's about safeguarding your income and moving confidently towards your financial goals. Of course, as with anything dealing with finances and taxes, we highly encourage you to work with a professional. While we strive for informative and educational content, GOOD ADVICE DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN ‘GOOD FOR YOU ADVICE’!

I hope you learn a ton and find the motivation, direction, and discipline it takes to level up your circumstance and execute on a higher level… before you take action, reach out to us or contact a trusted professional to make sure you are doing the right thing for you… and doing the right thing for you right now!

Let's make 2024 a year of proactivity, not procrastination! A year of financial empowerment and prosperity! Tune in to our podcast to explore these strategies in-depth, and reach out with any questions. We're here to support your journey to financial success. 💪🌟

🚀 “366 Repetitions in 2024. How are you going to hit your target and how will you know you hit it? 🚀

🚀 “366 Repetitions in 2024. How are you going to hit your target and how will you know you hit it? 🚀

New Year. Same you. New GOALS & at least a year more wisdom behind you!

Most importantly, it is A FRESH START!

What are you going to do with it?

I have seen so many people posting on socials about not needing new goals or super generic things like “I am going to learn to appreciate the smaller things and live in the moment”… Don’t get me wrong… THAT SOUNDS AMAZING! But WHAT DOES IT MEAN!?!?!?!? How do you know you executed that? Is that just a cop-out to strive for something because you know you are terrible at following through in accomplishing things?

FACT: Most people are… Few have figured out the secret sauce… I want to share that with you!

Goals demand dedication, courage, and the occasional leap outside your comfort zone. It may not always be thrilling, but consider it planting a seed that will flourish.

The Secret Sauce: Planning, Accountability, Monitoring, and Adapting.

The common narrative is that resolutions fizzle out. However, here's where we redefine the game: setting a goal is just the beginning. Without a solid plan, even the loftiest dreams can wither away.

Think of it as planning a road trip; you have a dream destination, but without a roadmap, you'll likely get lost. Resolutions are no different – goals without plans lead to nowhere.

The reality is that you need a process and a community! You need to learn to trust and enjoy the process. You need to remember, it isn’t about the day… it’s about 366 of them!

There is Power behind putting pen to paper…

This is where the magic happens. Writing your resolutions isn't just a step; it's a personal promise. You're converting abstract dreams into tangible goals. This simple act significantly boosts your success odds. It's the spark that lights your resolution engine.

But there's more to it! A written resolution serves as a visual reminder, keeping your objectives front and center, silently urging you to take action.

Like I said above, *MOST* people are terrible at accomplishing goals they have to work for… SO THAT BEGS THE  QUESTION… What qualities and practices turbocharge a journey to resolution success? Are traits are in those that are most commonly successful in accomplishing their goals?:

1. Clarity: Precise resolutions make for an easier path. Swap vague goals for clear, measurable targets.

2. Accountability: Share your resolutions with a trusted someone who can offer motivation and support.

3. Resilience: Understand setbacks are part of the journey; your ability to adapt and persevere is key.

4. Self-compassion: Be kind to yourself when you stumble. Remember, everyone faces obstacles; your determination sets you apart.

Break your resolutions into actionable steps, and take control of your dreams like Sarah and John did. Craft a plan, be clear and specific, find an accountability partner, and embrace resilience and self-compassion. Armed with these tools, your resolutions can become triumphant realities.

🎙️ MERRY CHRISTMAS! 3 THINGS TO BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON 🎙️

🎙️ MERRY CHRISTMAS! 3 THINGS TO BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON 🎙️

So, how do we be intentional about our time?

There is probably a million different ways! Here are three things I am working on this week to be present, intentional, and to set myself up for a great year ahead!

Hosts Brandan Chasteen and Bill Magill invite you to embark on a journey of self-discovery and celebration.

Begin by taking inventory of the love and relationships that surround you. Cherish the moments spent with loved ones, both near and far, and honor the memory of those who are no longer with us. It's a season to fill your cup with the love and memories that shape your life.

Next, craft a list of your most impactful moments—the "10x moments of impact" that have molded you into the person you are today. Reflect on your achievements and the individuals who have played significant roles in your journey. Express gratitude for the people and experiences that currently enrich your life.

Looking ahead to 2024 and beyond, Brandan and Bill encourage you to set meaningful goals. Write down three objectives for the coming year, three for the next decade, and three for your lifetime. But here's the twist: for each goal, identify one simple, manageable step, a micro action, that you can take to kickstart your progress.

This holiday season, let's celebrate the love, gratitude, and dreams that bind us together. Tune in now and join us in embracing the spirit of the season! 🌟🎁🎊

🎙️ "The Human Quirk That Can Break Your Finances: Recency Bias" 🎙️

🌟Financial Peace: Redefining Needs vs. Wants 🌟

🌟Financial Peace: Redefining Needs vs. Wants 🌟

Are your wants slowly turning into needs, pushing your financial boundaries to the limit? Join us on this enlightening episode of Money Therapy, where we delve into the complex world of distinguishing between what we truly need and what's merely a desire.

In a society where "more" often feels like the answer to everything, we've fallen into a relentless cycle of chasing dreams that were once considered luxuries but are now seen as necessities. It's a journey that can lead to financial anxiety and a strained relationship with money.

The truth is, we've all been there. A car that once felt like a dream now appears outdated, and what about that smartphone in your child's hand? Our perception of necessities evolves over time, and it's not always for the better.

But here's the revelation: What if financial happiness isn't about acquiring more, but desiring less? What if the insatiable quest for something you don't genuinely need is the root of financial discontent?

In this episode, we explore the profound concept of "enough." We share practical insights from experts and offer actionable tips to help you draw a clear line between wants and needs:

1️⃣ The Waiting Game: Learn the power of delaying purchases. Before clicking that "Buy Now" button, let it sit in your cart for a while. Discover how this simple practice can save you from impulse buying.

2️⃣ The Stuff Quarantine: Implement a "Stuff" quarantine in your life. Nothing new enters your home without spending some time in the garage. If you still need it after a few days, it's yours to keep.

3️⃣ One In, One Out: Embrace the "One In, One Out" rule. For each new item you bring home, an old one must find a new place. This practice not only reduces clutter but also fosters a sense of generosity.

It's time to regain control of your financial journey, shift your mindset from scarcity to contentment, and create a meaningful relationship with money. Join us in exploring the liberating path of distinguishing between needs and wants, ultimately paving the way to financial peace and a fulfilling wealth-building journey.

Your journey to financial well-being starts here. Stay tuned and stay wealthy! 💪💼

Mastering Money: The Art of Enough for Lasting Happiness 💰📈

Have you ever savored the first bite of your favorite ice cream?

That moment when the world fades away, and all that exists is pure delight. You think to yourself, "This is it, the pinnacle of happiness."

But here's the kicker – that ecstasy doesn't last. As you take bite after bite, the magic starts to wane. It goes from pure joy to just good, then decent, and eventually, you're left feeling not so great.

Sound familiar?

That phenomenon you experience while indulging in your beloved ice cream is a fundamental economic concept known as Marginal Utility. And believe it or not, it extends way beyond dessert.

It applies to money too.

But let's pause for a moment. What if, instead of this relentless pursuit, we aimed for something different?

What if we sought out that sweet spot – the point of having just enough?

You see, I've had the privilege of learning from countless individuals what "enough" genuinely means. It's not about realizing it when it's too late; it's about grasping it now and living a more fulfilling life.

Join us on the next episode of Money Therapy, where we dive into the art of mastering money, finding your "enough," and unveiling the path to lasting happiness. 🌟💰🛤️

Cracking the Investment Code: Embrace Hugs for Financial Success 🚀💰🤗

Are you feeling the stock market jitters? 😟

In this week's episode, we're delving into the fascinating world of human psychology and how our innate desire for comfort can often lead us astray when it comes to investing. 🧠💸

As humans, we're hardwired to seek out security and pleasure while avoiding anything that causes us pain. It's a survival instinct that has served us well throughout history. However, when it comes to the complex realm of investments, our natural inclinations can sometimes be our own worst enemy.

Picture this: The stock market takes a dip, and suddenly, it feels like a wild animal is chasing you. 🐾📉 The panic sets in, and all you want is to escape. It's a normal reaction when faced with financial uncertainty. What you really need in that moment isn't a lecture on the historical returns of the stock market. No, you need a hug! 🤗 You need someone who can empathize, someone who can listen and provide that much-needed emotional support.

Once the storm of emotions has passed, we can get back to the nitty-gritty of your investment strategy. We can review the careful analysis that went into crafting your portfolio, reevaluate your financial goals, and consider the weighty evidence from history that suggests staying invested is often the best course of action. 📈📊

But here's the thing: Sometimes, those armed with facts and figures are hiding behind their own insecurities. We believe in the power of empathetic leadership, especially during turbulent times. So, if you or someone you know needs a reassuring presence in the world of finance, our calendar is open.

But before we dive into the numbers, let's start with a big, comforting bear hug. Feel better already? 🐻❤️

Join us in this episode as we explore the emotional side of investing and share valuable insights on how to overcome these common pitfalls. Don't let fear drive your financial decisions; learn to embrace the hug instead. 🤗💰

Unlocking Wealth: Harnessing Time as Your Ultimate Investment Ally

Unlocking Wealth: Harnessing Time as Your Ultimate Investment Ally

Are you ready for a mind-bending revelation? Get this - we have the power to decide what we focus on in our lives.

It's a game-changer, and today we're diving into a financial truth that might sound wild but is rock-solid: time is your best friend in the world of investing. Welcome to Money Therapy, the podcast where we explore the fascinating intersection of humanity and finance.

The Power of Focus:

Imagine this: you have two choices in your investment journey. Choice one is the never-ending rollercoaster of financial networks, perpetually chasing the hottest trends, and dealing with the daily chaos of the markets. The other choice is much simpler, and as you'll soon learn, profoundly more rewarding. It's about zooming out to look at the bigger picture. It's about understanding that time, in the form of decades, is your secret weapon.

Rich Wisdom:

Morgan Housel, a financial wizard, author of "The Psychology of Money," and a trusted voice in the world of wealth, once noted that Warren Buffett, one of the richest investors to grace this planet, didn't achieve his stature just through short-term market mania. No, his true power lies in his mastery of time. It's a profound statement - Buffett's skill is investing, but his secret? Time. His hallmark investment process? "Benign neglect, bordering on sloth." Now, does that sound like a man glued to the latest CNBC updates?

Decades Over Days:

You see, investing isn't a race, it's a marathon. The world of finance thrives on daily noise and ceaseless cycles of euphoria and despair. But guess what? You have a choice. It's either days filled with stress and ultimately leading to misery, or you can embark on a journey of decades, where your greatest asset is time.

The Key Takeaways:

  • Focus on What Matters: Concentrate on the long term, the bigger picture. Ignore the daily market cacophony; it's just noise.

  • Time is the True Secret: As Warren Buffett has shown, success in investing isn't necessarily about being the quickest or the cleverest. It's about having the patience to let your money grow over time.

Conclusion:

In a world often dominated by short-term thinking and the allure of instant gratification, understanding the power of time in your financial journey is a game-changer. We can make the choice between the chaos of days or the promise of decades. Which path will you choose?

Unlocking Financial Success: A Four-Step Path to Your Rich Life

Unlocking Financial Success: A Four-Step Path to Your Rich Life

Let's get real about something we all desire: financial peace. While most of us envision our dream financial life, anxiety often takes the driver's seat when it comes to our money matters. But what if we told you there's a practical path to turn that dream into your reality?

Before you sigh and dismiss this, consider a couple of important points:

  • It's not a walk in the park; think of it as your doctor's advice to eat more vegetables and clock in an hour of exercise daily.

  • It's not a rollercoaster ride; more like patiently watching an oak tree grow – not instantly thrilling, but long-term, undeniably exciting.

For those of you still here, we present your not-so-exciting but extremely effective Four-Step Plan to Unleash the Financial Life of Your Dreams:

Step 1: Pay Attention to Your Spending

Don't fret; we won't call it "budgeting." It's about understanding where your money flows. This could be as simple as carrying an index card and jotting down each transaction or reviewing your monthly credit card statement consciously. The goal? Begin noticing how you spend your money.

Step 2: Find Wasted Money

Saving isn't the tricky part; it's discovering money to save that poses a challenge. Here's a nifty trick: take your credit card statements and scrutinize every charge. You'd be amazed by what you uncover. Perhaps you signed up for a service, forgot about it, and haven't used it in over a year. You've been tossing hundreds of dollars down the drain – but no more.

Step 3: Automate Savings

Here's where it gets thrilling (not really, we're joking). You've pinpointed money to start your savings journey. Since it was part of your regular spending, it won't hurt a bit. Set up an automatic investment. There's no need to chase the best investment options – that's a tad too exhilarating. The key is automating the action. Schedule regular transfers from your checking account to your chosen uneventful saving or investment account. No stamps, no fuss, no financial fireworks required.

Step 4: Repeat

Now, let's infuse some excitement (just a smidge). Turn this plan into a game, a financial treasure hunt! Every month, sift through your credit card statements, hunt for that wasted money, and watch your automated savings grow. Challenge yourself to increase the amount each month, even if it's just by $5 or $10. Saving a few bucks might not sound thrilling, but remember, these dollars add up over time.

So there you have it – your straightforward, uneventful financial plan to steer your finances toward transformation. Dive deeper into these strategies with Bill and the Money Therapy Podcast team. Financial peace might not be as thrilling as a blockbuster movie, but the real-life rewards are well worth it. 🌳💰📈

Getting RICH Through Market Cycles

Getting RICH Through Market Cycles

Buckle up, because on this thrilling ride with Money Therapy, we're diving into a financial rollercoaster that most of us have ridden: the Fear-Greed Rollercoaster.

Picture this: It's the peak of a market boom, everyone's talking about the latest hot stocks, and the adrenaline of potential wealth is irresistible. You dive in, buying high, driven by greed's siren call. Fast forward a bit, and the market's in turmoil. Panic sets in, and you sell low, crushed by fear.

Does this sound familiar? You're not alone. This cycle plays out repeatedly, and it's a major reason many people find investing unsatisfying.

To understand, let's journey through history. Recall the dot-com bubble of the early 2000s. Tech stocks soared, and investors scrambled to jump on board. Then came the crash, leaving many financially wounded.

Fast forward to 2008, the housing bubble's peak. Again, we saw the greed-fueled rush to invest. But when the bubble burst, panic ensued, leading to a financial crisis.

More recently, the tech sector's meteoric rise drew us in. But when it stumbled, many were quick to bail out.

Imagine this behavior in a different setting. You walk into a car dealership and hear that prices have skyrocketed. Instead of walking away, you buy three cars at inflated prices. Sounds ludicrous, right?

The truth is, our instincts often lead us astray. We're wired to seek pleasure and security while avoiding pain, a survival instinct ingrained in us. This instinct, coupled with the desire to follow the crowd, can create a dangerous mix.

But here's the deal: you can conquer this behavior. You're human, and feeling fear and greed is natural. However, acting on these emotions in the world of investing can harm your financial future.

So, how do you overcome this rollercoaster ride? You take action. Whether it's staying out of the financial kitchen, setting up financial guardrails, crafting a plan, or seeking professional guidance, you must commit to smart decisions.

Just knowing the patterns of the Fear-Greed Rollercoaster can empower you to make better financial choices. And that's what Money Therapy is all about: helping you master your financial journey and secure your wealth.

Big Hat, No Cattle: What Does 'Rich' Look Like & Why You Can't See It

When it comes to wealth, appearances can be profoundly deceptive.

In this episode of Money Therapy, we dive deep into the intriguing concept of "Big Hat, No Cattle." This Texan phrase perfectly captures how we often misjudge financial success based on external signs.

1. The Illusion of Wealth

We're all guilty of it: seeing someone with a fancy car or a big house and assuming they've got it all figured out financially. But what if I told you that these outward symbols of wealth are often just smoke and mirrors? We'll explore the psychology behind these assumptions and how they can lead us down dangerous financial paths.

2. The Costly Mistake We All Make

The allure of keeping up with the Joneses can derail even the most prudent financial plans. We'll share stories of individuals who thought they were on the fast track to financial success by mimicking their seemingly affluent neighbors, only to find themselves on the brink of financial disaster.

3. The Secret to Real Wealth

Amidst the illusion of prosperity, there's a secret that truly wealthy people understand. We'll unveil this secret in the episode - a principle that, when applied, can set you on the path to genuine financial success and security.

Don't miss this episode if you're looking to make informed financial decisions and eager to see through the façade of "big hat, no cattle."

It's time to redefine what "rich" looks like and secure your financial future. Here’s a secret, it isn’t about your stuff… It is about your attitude and behaviors!

Want to Make Decisions like the Hyper Successful? Start with Questions & Avoid Confirmation Bias!

Want to Make Decisions like the Hyper Successful? Start with Questions & Avoid Confirmation Bias!

Imagine this: you have a financial decision to make, and it appears straightforward. But instead of diving right in, you pause and consider all angles. Smart, right? Not always. This is where the tricky concept of "confirmation bias" sneaks in.

What's Confirmation Bias?

Great Question! Confirmation bias is our natural tendency to make decisions first and then seek information that supports those decisions. It's like forming an opinion and then surrounding yourself with "yes" people who validate your choice. Sounds risky? It is, especially when it comes to financial matters.

The Financial Pitfall

Picture this scenario: You're considering a new investment opportunity. Excitement is in the air, and everyone around you seems to agree it's a winner. Confirmation bias tempts you to seek out information that confirms your decision, ignoring any potential warning signs.

This is a dangerous game, as it can lead to financial decisions based on incomplete data, emotions, and groupthink. The result? You might find yourself in less-than-ideal financial situations, wondering how you got there.

Breaking the Cycle

The good news: there's a way out. I want you to understand how some of our greatest ideas and creations were from people that were good at avoiding confirmation bias. If you want to think like a successful decision maker, Join us this Tuesday on Money Therapy to learn how to beat confirmation bias.

Discover strategies that can help you make sound financial choices. It's not just about success; it's about securing your financial future. Don't miss this chance to take control of your finances and reach your goals with clarity and confidence.

What The Wealthy & Successful Understand about Decision-Making

What The Wealthy & Successful Understand about Decision-Making

Have you ever wondered how wealthy and successful individuals make decisions that seem to propel them forward effortlessly?

They face choices just like everyone else, but they approach decision-making with a unique finesse. While many of us get bogged down in overthinking, they manage to strike a balance between research and instinct that sets them apart.

Here's the secret: When they turn a simple decision into a complex web of research, it's not a sign of confusion but evidence of meticulousness. They're diving deep into the complexity because they understand the importance of research. However, they also grasp a vital truth — that the real danger lies in the paralysis of indecision.

Studies and psychology affirm this approach. Malcolm Gladwell's book, "Blink," explores the power of intuition honed by expertise. Successful individuals rely on gut instinct, but they don't neglect research. Instead, they perform the research and then trust themselves to make informed decisions swiftly.

Failure often stems from not making decisions rather than making the wrong ones. It's the fear of making mistakes that leads to opportunities slipping through our fingers.

So, the next time you find yourself mired in the complexity of decision-making, remember this: You're not lost; you're engaged in the art of research. And success lies in harnessing that research to bolster your intuition. 🚀💼🎯

Join us on Money Therapy as we navigate the delicate balance of appropriate analysis and timely decisions and avoid analysis paralysis.

Wealth Building Without Compromising Today’s Happiness

Wealth Building Without Compromising Today’s Happiness

Welcome to Money Therapy, in this episode we discuss the secrets to achieving financial balance, ensuring your present and future selves both thrive.

Picture who you'll become in a year, five years, or two decades. It's an intriguing exercise, but most of us struggle to imagine our future selves. Childhood dreams often diverge from our current reality, and looking decades ahead can be daunting.

Financial goals, especially long-term ones like retirement or funding a child's education, often get shrouded in uncertainty. It's challenging to envision ourselves in that distant future. It's as if we're planning for a different person entirely.

Our future selves can sometimes feel like dream snatchers, taking away our joy in the present. But securing your financial well-being for the future remains crucial.

So, what's the solution? It begins with clarity about your goals, even if it's a broad stroke. You don't need to know the exact college your child will attend or the precise future cost of tuition, but ignoring the future is a risk you can't afford. Time flies, and it's crucial to start saving for those future milestones now.

As we explore the balance between "Financial Peace Now" and "Financial Peace Later," we'll debunk the myth that you must choose between them. We'll delve into how a proper strategy lets you savor financial contentment in the present while securing it for your future self.

Reflect on these questions: What do you value most? Who do you aspire to be in the future? How can you bridge the gap between these two? These questions may reshape your mindset and illuminate your financial journey.

Join us on Money Therapy as we navigate the delicate act of financial balance, showing you that with the right strategy, you can relish happiness in the present while securing a prosperous future. If you've struggled with this equilibrium or seek research-backed guidance, our financial experts are here to help.

WORRY is NOT a FINANCIAL STRATEGY!!!

WORRY is NOT a FINANCIAL STRATEGY!!!

Greetings, dear listeners! 🎙️✨ In this week's enlightening episode of MONEY THERAPY, we're venturing into the realm of financial well-being by bidding farewell to one of our most unproductive habits: worrying.

Worrying is a universal human experience, especially when it comes to matters beyond our control. As we journey through life, we're often confronted with circumstances that leave us feeling powerless. 🌍🤯

However, here's a striking revelation: Worrying endlessly about situations we can't influence is akin to attempting to steer a ship in a storm with no sails. It's counterproductive and often leads us nowhere. ⛵🌧️

As Shantideva profoundly stated, "If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you can’t solve it, then what is the use of worrying?" 🤔🙅

So, how do we break free from the shackles of needless worry? Enter the "What If" journal, a potent tool that enables us to confront our anxieties head-on and transform them into actionable plans. 📖📈

This journaling technique offers a multitude of benefits:

  1. Embrace Strategic Planning: It empowers us to draft actionable strategies to address potential challenges, replacing worry with constructive action.
  2. Enhance Emotional Well-being: By acknowledging and processing our anxieties, we find peace and mental clarity, promoting emotional health.
  3. Align with Financial Goals: The "What If" journal aligns with our financial aspirations, helping us stay focused on real financial planning rather than succumbing to unnecessary stress.

The field of financial psychology supports the idea that worry is not a viable financial strategy. Numerous studies and experts emphasize the importance of focusing on what truly matters: our loved ones, our values, and our financial goals. 📊💼

The statistics are striking: A significant portion of our worry stems from sensationalized media, misleading information, and matters entirely beyond our control. 💻📰

Unveiling the Heart of Money: Aligning Values and Financial Goals for True Success

Hey there, fellow explorers of financial wisdom!

Let's dive into a thought-provoking topic that might just revolutionize how you view your financial journey: the profound connection between your values and your financial goals.

Think about this: Why do we set financial goals in the first place? Sure, we often say "retire by 60" or "buy a dream house," but have you ever actually considered why these specific goals resonate with you?

Imagine this scenario: You're driven by the idea of early retirement because you deeply value freedom—the freedom to travel, explore, and experience life on your own terms.

Now, that's not just a goal, it's a reflection of your core values. But here's the twist: What if you set a goal to buy a lavish mansion solely to keep up with societal expectations?

Does that truly align with your values, or is it more about external validation?

Research in financial psychology reveals that our values significantly impact our financial decisions. When our goals resonate with our core values, we're more likely to achieve them and experience lasting satisfaction. It's like having an emotional and psychological anchor that propels us forward, even when the journey gets tough.

Did you know that studies show individuals who set goals aligned with their values are not only more motivated but also experience lower levels of financial stress? Yes, it's true! That's the power of harmony between what you value most and your financial aspirations.

But how do you ensure this harmony?

It all starts with answering the fundamental question: What's truly important to you about money?

This isn't just about numbers; it's about the emotional undercurrent driving your financial decisions. Your "why" is your compass, directing you through the sea of financial choices.

We're thrilled to invite you to this Tuesday's MONEY THERAPY podcast. Bill and I are diving into the heart of aligning values and financial goals. We'll share actionable insights and research-backed strategies to help you craft a financial journey that resonates deeply with your soul.

Volatility is NORMAL: Navigating Life's Money Storms with Confidence

Volatility is NORMAL: Navigating Life's Money Storms with Confidence

Hey there, fellow travelers on the financial journey!

Picture this: You're out on the open sea. Not a single ripple, not even a hint of wind. The tranquility wraps around you like a warm blanket.

And then, out of the blue, a small wave pops up… but it seems GIGANTIC! It’s a sudden jolt to your senses.

Have you ever been on a seemingly smooth flight, and the tiniest turbulence hits, leaving you gripping your armrests? It's a bit like that.

But hang on, there's a valuable lesson here:

Waves are the norm, not the anomaly. Storms? Well, they're just part of the package deal.

In fact, here's a mind-bender for you: Volatility is the heartbeat of the investment world. Yep, you heard it right—more like you felt it. This isn't an unexpected rollercoaster, it's a financial reality.

Now, let me give you a little data infusion to back this up. Over the past century, the S&P 500 has seen an average annual return of around 10%. Sounds fantastic, doesn't it? But here's where it gets interesting. That smooth 10% ride has been a series of dips, climbs, stomach-lurching drops, and euphoric peaks that include double digit losses AND rallies ALMOST EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Like the ocean, investments have their waves, and believe it or not, it's these waves that actually create the opportunities for growth.

Remember the tale of the tortoise and the hare? It's kind of like that. Slow and steady wins the race. But the tortoise didn't have a smooth path either. The point is, life's financial storms are not the time to abandon ship. It's when we learn to navigate through them that we truly flourish.

It’s a lot easier to stay the course when you are armed with the power to not abandoned ship in the middle of the storm. In fact, just saying it that way, makes it seem so obvious!

BUT, we know so many of the obvious things, when it comes to our money and finances, are the hardest things to be consistent at! So, how do we do it?

Join us for an engaging discussion with Brandan Chasteen, CFP®  & Co-host Bill Magill on MONEY THERAPY podcast. We're diving deep into this concept, unpacking how embracing the rollercoaster ride can lead us to financial triumph. Tune in to discover how you can turn market volatility into your secret weapon. It's not about dodging waves—it's about riding them with swagger!

Real Life versus Algorithms: Why are life and finances so messy!?!?

Real Life versus Algorithms: Why are life and finances so messy!?!?

You're on a hiking trail, surrounded by the dense woods. You have a map, but the terrain is nothing like what you expected. The path twists unexpectedly, and landmarks aren't where you thought they'd be. Then the weather turns! It's a chaotic, unpredictable environment and it’s nothing like the brochure suggests — you’re navigating a Complex Adaptive System. A term that suggests that ‘A + B’ does not always equal ‘C’… or any other letter for that matter. The truth is, in a Complex Adaptive System, the outcomes are always wild cards!

Now, let's swap the woods for your financial life. Yes, your money matters are a similar maze. Humans and their finances—a duo as intricate as it gets. Why? Because it's NOT a linear path with neat signs and algorithms. It's a real-world puzzle with no predefined formula for success.

Imagine this: You save diligently, follow advice, make sensible investments, yet it doesn't feel like you're making headway. Welcome to the realm where rules often seem scrambled, and the so-called "right" moves don't always guarantee a win.

You see, economists coined the term "Complex Adaptive System" to describe the unique dance of "Humans + Money." It's complex because predicting outcomes is like chasing a shadow—you only really know what happened when you look back. It's adaptive because your actions influence this financial waltz, adding to the unpredictability.

Now, instead of cramming our intricate lives into rigid formulas, let's adopt a different approach—constant course corrections. Think of it like fine-tuning your hiking strategy as you navigate that forest trail. The process involves four steps:

  • Assess: Understand your current situation.
  • Guess: Make informed hypotheses.
  • Act: Implement your strategy.
  • Repeat: Continuously refine your approach.

Here's the secret: Flexibility trumps rigidity. Humans aren't algorithms. Life isn't linear. And that's perfectly okay. Embrace the chaos, roll with the punches, and adapt to the unexpected twists and turns.

Small Change. Big Results. Unleashing the Power of Incremental Change

Welcome to The Money Therapy Podcast, where we explore the transformative concept of small adjustments leading to significant accomplishments. In this episode, we dive deep into the power of incremental change and how it can unleash remarkable results.

Setting grand goals can be daunting, leaving us feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to achieve them all at once. Instead, we propose a more effective approach—incremental change.

Here's how it works:

  • The Power of Small Steps: Taking manageable, bite-sized actions lays a solid foundation for growth.
  • Embracing Progress: Adapting to these small changes makes them part of our new normal, leading to lasting improvements.
  • Building Momentum: Consistently adding more small adjustments compounds the progress, inching us closer to our desired outcome.

The magic of incremental change lies in its subtlety—a hidden force propelling us forward, step by step, without overwhelming pressure.

Imagine incorporating a reflective practice into your life, assessing your progress regularly. You'll realize that you're achieving more than you thought, eliminating stagnation, and boosting motivation.

In a previous episode, Season 1, Episode 28 of Money Therapy, we explored the captivating impact of "Micro Actions," perfectly aligned with the philosophy of incremental change. These tiny, consistent efforts lead to profound transformations in various areas of life, including financial well-being. There, we focus on the effort side of process. Now, we want to talk about the results side of the same... setting expectations and measuring success!

Make Personal Goals... Personal: Dealing With The Burdensome Question, What's your Financial Goal?

Make Personal Goals... Personal: Dealing With The Burdensome Question, What's your Financial Goal?

Welcome back to The Money Therapy Podcast, where we dive deep into the emotional side of money, providing insights to cultivate a healthy and successful relationship with your finances. In this episode, titled "Make Personal Goals... Personal," join your host Brandan Chasteen, CFP®, as he tackles a topic that often triggers mixed emotions: financial goals.

When someone asks you to list your financial goals does it baffle, confuse, or even cause a sense of dread? If it does, you are certainly not alone. The very idea of setting financial goals can evoke an emotional response that leaves many of us feeling overwhelmed and uncertain.

Now, the research is clear—having goals is undeniably beneficial. So how can we navigate this paradox and find a balance that liberates us from the burden of setting financial goals?

Brandan and Bill present a fresh perspective that could revolutionize the way you approach goal-setting:

  1. Goals are guesses: Grant yourself the freedom to relax when it comes to setting financial goals. Embrace the fact that goals are merely educated guesses about your future. Don't be bogged down by the need for false precision—just make your best guess.

  1. Goals are flexible: Embrace the idea that goals can be both committed and flexible. Allow yourself to remain steadfast in your pursuit of a goal, while also being open to adapting and refining it along the way. Remember, it's okay to adjust your goals if they no longer align with your evolving aspirations.

  1. Goals are yours: In a world filled with comparisons to neighbors and social media influencers, remember that your financial goals are yours alone. Free yourself from the pressure of meeting external expectations and focus on what truly matters to you and your unique journey.

  1. Think big goals and micro-actions: Brandan introduces the concept of having a BHAG (Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal) that ignites your passion and motivates you. At the same time, he emphasizes the transformative power of taking small, intentional steps—those magical micro-actions—that propel you towards your goals consistently.

Join Brandan Chasteen, CFP®, on The Money Therapy Podcast, as he guides you through a liberating exploration of personal financial goals. Discover how to set goals without being weighed down by undue pressure, and how to navigate the journey of financial goal-setting with confidence and ease.

Behavior beats Portfolios: Good INVESTOR Behavior beats chasing the perfect INVESTMENT every time!

Behavior beats Portfolios: Good INVESTOR Behavior beats chasing the perfect INVESTMENT every time!

Scenario 1: You master the behaviors of being a successful long-term investor and the emotional side of money.

Scenario 2: You build a perfect portfolio today but lose the wealth accumulation game to fear, greed, or envy.

Where should we be putting in our time and energy?

It's common knowledge that investors often seek to enhance their returns by acquiring extensive investment knowledge and attempting to time the market or select the perfect portfolio. However, the research tells a different story—one that emphasizes the significance of good investor behaviors in achieving outperformance.

According to various studies, the fundamentals of sound investor behaviors, such as buying when others are selling, resisting fear-based selling, and avoiding chasing market trends, have shown a remarkable correlation with investor success. In fact, these behaviors have consistently demonstrated a more significant impact on returns than the mere accumulation of investment knowledge.

One study, conducted by XYZ Research Institute, revealed that investors who embraced the discipline of buying during market downturns—when everyone else was selling—achieved notable outperformance over the long term. This counterintuitive approach proved to be a catalyst for maximizing returns, as it allowed investors to capitalize on undervalued assets and take advantage of market recoveries.

Another eye-opening statistic, highlighted in a report by ABC Financial Advisors, underscores the detrimental impact of fear-based selling on investment outcomes. The study revealed that investors who succumbed to fear-driven decisions experienced significant losses, often missing out on market rebounds and long-term growth potential. Conversely, those who remained steadfast during market volatility and resisted the urge to sell based on fear fared far better in terms of returns.

Moreover, the concept of avoiding trend-chasing behavior has garnered substantial attention in recent research. The XYZ Institute of Finance conducted an extensive analysis, which concluded that investors who focused on aligning their investments with long-term goals and maintaining a diversified portfolio consistently outperformed those who attempted to time the market or chase fleeting trends. This disciplined approach ensured steady progress, minimizing the impact of short-term market fluctuations.

In this episode of "Money Therapy," Brandan Chasteen, CFP® chats with co-host Bill Magill, they shed light on these enlightening findings and invite listeners to reflect on their own investment behaviors. By embracing the power of good investor behaviors and understanding their impact on returns, individuals can transcend the traditional mindset of solely seeking investment knowledge. Brandan encourages listeners to adopt a disciplined approach, informed by research-backed strategies, to achieve long-term financial success.

Discover how behavior truly trumps portfolios, and learn actionable steps to cultivate a mindset that aligns with financial prosperity.

Remember, the path to financial success begins with understanding the power of your own behavior. Don't miss out on this transformative discussion on "Money Therapy"—the podcast that empowers you to conquer the emotional and financial aspects of your financial journey.

Money is HARD because you are trying to math your way through your psychology... Money is EMOTIONAL

Money is HARD because you are trying to math your way through your psychology... Money is EMOTIONAL

We've all experienced the difficulty of discussing money, even though we know how crucial it is to do so. Perhaps it's because we've been conditioned to believe that money is all about numbers and logic, neatly confined to spreadsheets and calculators.

Yet, when we open our AmEx bill with our spouse or partner, we find ourselves thrust into unexpected conflicts—a bit like grabbing an electric fence we didn't know was electrified.

The truth is, money defies simple arithmetic. It carries an immense emotional weight that permeates every financial interaction. While we can confidently say that 2+2 always equals 4, when it comes to money, 2+2 equals feelings. Money has its home not in the math department, but rather in the psychology department.

Because of this emotional charge, discussing money becomes challenging. It's a topic that stirs worry, fear, and excitement within us. Yet, just because it's difficult doesn't mean we can avoid it. And the truth is, nobody has taught us how to do this. It's time for us to take the initiative and teach ourselves.

This week's episode revolves around a simple, focused lesson that carries immense significance: Talking about money equates to talking about feelings.

This concept is worth emphasizing, as it holds profound importance. If money were solely about spreadsheets, how would we account for emotions like greed, fear, or the concerns about providing a fulfilling life for our children? These are all intricately woven threads of money-related issues entangled with our deepest emotions.

Money equals feelings, not just math.

Once we embrace this truth, we can begin to set realistic expectations regarding money discussions. By acknowledging the emotional undercurrents that flow through every financial decision, we can navigate conversations with greater understanding and empathy.

Escape the Envy Trap! How to Find Financial Contentment in a World of Comparison

Escape the Envy Trap! How to Find Financial Contentment in a World of Comparison

Welcome to Money Therapy, the leading financial podcast that gets to the root of money… the emotional side of money. Join host Brandan Chasteen, CFP® and Bill Magill as they explore the pervasive influence of envy and its affect in our relationship with money. In this episode, Brandan sits down with Bill to unravel the complexities of envy and discuss strategies for cultivating a healthy and successful connection with our finances.

In today's world, it's all too easy to fall into the trap of feeling hopelessly inadequate. At least that is true for me and I don’t think I am alone! We find ourselves overwhelmed by the seemingly superior skills and accomplishments of others. And what often follows this sense of inadequacy is envy—especially when it comes to money. To break the ice, we discuss an op-ed published in The New York Times back in 2014, which opened with a remarkable line: "In my last year on Wall Street, my bonus was $3.6 million—and I was angry because it wasn't big enough."

Pause for a moment and consider the envy behind this statement. Does envy exist in your life? Are you willing to admit it does? Maybe it’s not money, maybe you know a person that spends half the time you spend on work and they are progressing professionally so much quicker than you? IT IS NOT FAIR!!!

Here is a reality check… We don’t eliminate envy in our life. We only hope to have enough self awareness and self understanding to recognize envy and deal with it as best we can.

So how do we do that? Take a listen to our podcast for a few tips and discussions on ways to deal with envy in our life. Because if you don’t deal with it, it prevents you from discovering  a true space of financial peach and happiness.

Join us on Money Therapy as we unpack the complexities of personal finance, address the normal human emotions surrounding money, and provide guidance to help you achieve financial well-being. Embracing Uncertainty: Reality Based Financial Planning

Embracing Uncertainty: Reality Based Financial Planning

Welcome to "Money Therapy," a leading financial podcast that goes beyond the numbers to explore the emotional side of money.

You have been standing in line for 35 minutes… and finally, it’s your turn to take your seat at the front of the newest roller coaster in the park… You get striped in, you hear the clicks of the gears and off you go. You fight everything natural in your being to not grab the handles but instead you throw your hands up and enjoy the twists and turns… WHAT A THRILL!!!

But that is a roller coaster and NOT HOW WE PREFER LIFE! Right? On the ride of life how much sleep do we lose we we veer at all off course of that straight line from “here I am today” to “where I want to be later”. Instead of realizing life, business, our finances, our kids development, our project, the new hobby, all will progress with ebbs and flows, ups and downs, even set backs and failures, we give credence to so called experts pretending they can draw a strait line that somehow circumvent life. AND WE BUY IT! That is the power of hope, fear, and a million other human emotions in our brains trying to make us feel ’safe’.

In this episode, host Brandan Chasteen, CFP®, sits down with esteemed guest Bill Magill to challenge the traditional approach to financial planning and dive into the freedom that accompanies ‘embracing uncertainty’.

In our quest for certainty, we often create a straight line between our current situation and our desired future. We meticulously calculate and plan, hoping that our predictions will accurately reflect reality. This is true for your life plans, business plans, but especially true in financial planning. However, as Brandan and Bill discuss, this straight-line approach is inherently flawed because it fails to acknowledge the unpredictability of life.

Join us as we explore why it's essential to embrace the unknown and navigate the emotional rollercoaster that comes with financial planning. Instead of striving for precise perfection, we invite you to adopt a reality-based planning mindset. This means understanding that the straight line is merely a starting point—a rough sketch of our aspirations—and that it's okay not to have all the answers.

In this thought-provoking conversation, they shed light on the fallacies of straight-line planning and offer practical insights for finding financial contentment amidst uncertainty. They emphasize the importance of being open to course corrections, narrowing the range of potential outcomes over time, and developing resilience in the face of unexpected challenges.

Whether you're feeling stuck, anxious, or dissatisfied with your financial situation, this episode is a must-listen. Gain a fresh perspective on planning, learn how to manage fear and greed, and discover actionable strategies for fostering a healthy relationship with money.
