Why New Small Businesses Do Not Need Branding

Why New Small Businesses Do Not Need Branding

Can you invest in branding to start a brand-new business? Absolutely! But the truth is you do not need to. Chances are you will rebrand in a year or two. That's not to say you shouldn't work on your visual identity, but it shouldn't be a primary focus. There are other things more important in the "behind the scenes" branding for a new business -listen to the new episode!

22: How To Build A Humanized, Purposeful, But Business-First Brand

22: How To Build A Humanized, Purposeful, But Business-First Brand

Would you agree that branding a business means humanizing it? As in giving the business human-like traits?

If we think of branding in that way, giving a business human-like traits, it might be easier to define our brand's identity. But I do have some general steps to help you get there faster.

Brand identity is one of the most important things in our brand. It helps us connect with the right audience and assists in making our business look and feel unique. When it comes to visually defining a brand's identity, things can become tricky.

1. Being True To Our Brand Or Following A Design Trend?

It seems simple, but a lot is involved in visually defining a brand. For starters, being true to our style instead of following trends is no easy feat. It seems like all popular brands in our circle are "dressing" the same style, doesn't it? As of now, in this post's latest edit, it's classy serif font in a mix of regular and italic on header titles, all in a graphic or website made of tons of beige with black.

I want to be that tall, skinny, serif font in beige clothes bitch too! But feels unaligned. Feels limiting for my business and is not the only type of people I hang out with (A.K.A. buyers).

Everyone says they want to be their "authentic self" today, but everyone is wearing beige with serif.

Love, we can't all be serif in beige. Some of us are a rainbow! Some of us are modern and minimal. Some of us are feminine… And they are all fabulous, as long as it's the right style for your business.

2. You Are NOT Your Brand, Your Business Is Your Brand.

Since I just humanized branding, I feel this is an important distinction to make -especially for personal brands: you are not the brand.

We may love vintage and feminine style, but is that our BRAND?

When creating a brand's identity, and then designing its visuals, we are not browsing for a new painting for our living room. It is not supposed to be something we visually love because it feels "so me!".

The function of a brand's visual identity, the logo included, is reinforcing the business goals, amplifying the brand's messaging, and being that beam of light that will attract the right audience. We are designing more for the audience than for ourselves.

That's why being clear on our target audience and doing market research is so important: we want to create a brand identity that helps our business stand out from the crowd (competitors) so we can be seen by those awesome people (target audience).

A brand is the audience-facing side of a business. A brand is never a person. A person is too awesome and rich and infinite to fit in a brand.

3. Start Branding With Purpose

One thing I’ve learned is that we all should be branding with purpose, not accidentally, as we go. Why? Because otherwise, we are wasting time, energy, and losing money. Being intentional and purposeful means we have a vision and, hopefully, a plan -these will increase the chances of our business success.

When we have a clear purpose for our brands, it all becomes much easier.

So, before I finish this post, I’ll leave some things I think can help anyone on their journey to achieve the perfect brand identity structure (if such a thing exists!):

Discover

* Understand your purpose

* Define your audience

* List your goals, services, products

* Be honest about the things you like and dislike in your brand

* Organize your ideas and eliminate what doesn’t seem doable at the time

Define

* Collect inspiration and define your visual style

* Define your brand’s message and purpose clearly

* Research your market

* Understand you

18: Brand Guidelines Book - Comparing 2 Projects Books In Details

Brand Guidelines are important for a brand. That doesn't mean they have to have 35 pages, 50 pages, or whatever you see out there. Do not be sold on the NUMBER of pages a brand guideline has, as many of these pages can be "fluff" pages -like a full cover page per section or item.

On this episode (Youtube video link here: https://youtu.be/ixv7HvhaYvs), I compare the guidelines created for Dawnmarie Healthy & Fit with 12 pages, and one created for Stereotype Breakers with 23 pages. Both of these could have more or less pages. They are both different in structure -DHF has more explanation about each item, where SB has more of a showcase approach, being that the CEO of SB was heavily involved with the strategy process with me and can benefit more of visual reminders than technical pointers.

E13 - Social Media Accounts Branding Strategy

E13 - Social Media Accounts Branding Strategy

Today I'm talking about Personal Branding on Instagram -more specifically, separating the business and personal accounts on Instagram.

Please keep in mind that this is my experience and how I decided to work my branding strategy. This is not to say that is the only way and you cannot mix all under one same account -you can, just presents more challenges, but is absolutely doable and, in fact, is easier when done from the get-go.

Don't forget to connect with me on my Business IG account for juicy branding tips at @heykellybrito

I'm breaking down this episode in 6 main points below:

1. YOUR NICHE AND YOUR BRAND DO NOT NEED TO REPRESENT ALL PARTS OF YOU: My personal account differs greatly of my business account content. Could I have everything in one place and balance it out? Sure! But it's definitely harder. My writer friends, and my tarot/spiritualist friends, and my horror fans friends do not care about branding tips for creative businesses. Most of them have 9 to 5 jobs and they like it that way. Most women entrepreneurs in my target audience do not care about horror, fiction writing career, or tarot -so why would I put the pressure and extra work on myself trying to make all work in ONE account? I saw it as a simpler and more efficient strategy to keep 2 separate accounts.

2. Niching down allows us to focus more, therefore, get better at something.

3. It is important to not lose focus of what branding really is. Nowadays we are selling only the "purpose under one same flag" while "creating a tribe" and it borderlines a religion. While yes, we want to attract and connect with a certain group of people, we also want to sell. And that same people we attract and connect are not in love with our brands just because -it is because we offer them not only a purpose in common, but a service, product, or knowledge they need to grow their business or make their own lives easier in some way. Branding is an appeal to emotions, but it is first and foremost a STRATEGY for your BUSINESS growth, through a strategically created messaging system. Never lose sight of this.

4. Focusing and niching down, positioning ourselves through our brand, in a certain way that will allow us and our business to grow, is absolutely fine. There is no guilt or shame in this strategic move. This does not make us less authentic, genuine, true in any way. THIS is what allows us to build the lifestyle business we all want. We become entrepreneurs, most of time, for this reason.

5. Deactivating my personal account for a couple of months paid allowed me to focus on my business account without distractions. It paid off! The best way to build brand awareness, work on positioning and build authority, is niching down. Focusing on one thing at a time. On the next episode, I'll break down my exact steps on how I got 4 times more followers with minimal time and effort on Instagram, why I chose this platform instead of the many others out there, how it got me to a TV show on CW channel… everything.

6. As a final thought, remember that there is no right or wrong in how you structure your personal brand presence on social media. It just should be done around a strategy that supports your business growth, if that's what you want. Take into consideration how much you can handle, what is serving the purpose and what is not.

E3 - Brand Storytelling

E3 - Brand Storytelling

What the heck is storytelling on a brand?

I know we understand storytelling when it's structured in a book: beginning, middle, and end. But when it comes to applying it to a brand, many of us have a hard time translating it.

My best advice is: think of a hero's journey. YOU are the "hero" on your brand.

Everybody has a different story. Exploring what makes us unique and then finding the strategic way to tell it, in a way it supports the business growth and brand awareness, is brand storytelling.

As humans, we are naturally attracted to story. Be it through writing, photography, orally... we like to tell stories. We like to listen to stories. That's what makes brand storytelling such a powerful tool.

Of course, you cannot just pick random parts of your story and share it with your audience, just because. If there's no strategy, well, it's not brand storytelling -it's, simply, storytelling. And, in business, if there's no strategic plan and purpose behind what you're sharing, then is it even worth sharing it?

But if you have a plan, a strategy, you will choose a specific part of your story that will allow you to connect with the audience, or provoke a certain emotion (which is the way to attract the right audience and build a community), or even make a sale. It all depends on your plan and strategy.

The story you tell can have an individual goal, on a single post (like promoting a webinar or selling a one-of product), or it can part of a bigger picture (as a campaign for a launch).

Episode takeaways:

  • Storytelling is a branding strategy that helps you connect with your audience through telling your story (or A story)
  • The story you tell must have a purpose and strategy behind it
  • The story can be a one of or part of a larger story/plan
  • Photos/images are important, as that is usually the first thing our audience sees (before they actually read our story)
  • If there is no strategy and purpose behind the story you are sharing, why share it?

E2 - Brand Identity Guides

E2 - Brand Identity Guides

Why do we talk about mood boards so much but rarely touch the topic of brand identity guides? They are as important as -if not MORE important- moodboards. If the moodboard is the opening step of your branding process, the identity guide is the closing step.

Why Should You Have an Identity Guide?

Well, once you’re finished with your brand identity design (the first, main, elements, anyway), you will want to have them all in one place. One board, where you collect your logo, colors, fonts, photos, etc. Your go-to place, so you can make sure that you’re always “on brand.” Because, believe me, it’s really easy to lose track of things -specially depending on how stretched out your business presence is.

How to Use Your Identity Guide

Share it with professionals with whom you will collaborate or that you are hiring to work on your brand. For example, if you hire a photographer, sharing your identity guide with her will provide invaluable info about your brand. It will help your photographer understand your message, your “vibe,” and how to help you get the images that actually compliment your branding goals.

The same applies to marketing strategists, copywriters, etc.

The Types of Identity Guide

You can have an Identity Guide as simple or as complex as you want. I tend to create something truly simply for my design clients -a place to collect the main elements of their identity design.

But if you are a CEO, you can add your brand promise, message, mission, brand words, and possibly create a booklet with anything and everything about your brand. It’s a great tool to share with your employees, to make sure everyone understand how to use each element of your brand.

The Brand Identity Guide can be a powerful tool to help you stay on brand and always help improve your brand experience.

THE BRAND

This might be the one we are the most familiar with. A brand is a business. It is the face and persona we create for a business. And that is, actually, why some marketers didn’t accept “personal branding” well when it first became a thing. The conflict in the concept was: creating a brand already meant making a business more human and personal, so personal branding makes no sense! And I get it. It makes no sense, but it does. We'll talk amore personal branding on another episode.

VISUAL IDENTITY

The brand design is the most important part of a brand’s visual identity, in my opinion. But then again, I'm a brand designer. To prove my point, if you stop and think, the most popular brand elements are usually the logo, patterns, business cards, website, social media templates… Design! Always seemed to me like the "heaviest" part of developing a brand's visual identity falls on the designer. The designer tends to become the strategist. The quarterback of the brand's visuals. Sidenote: And that's why, dear friend, choosing the right designer for your brand is so very important! Although illustration is its own thing, I’ll throw it in the design mix, just because they usually go hand-in-hand most of the time. Sorry (and thank you!) illustrators.

BRANDING

Branding is everything involved in manipulating how you want your business to be perceived by your audience.

Let’s say I open a scented candles store. I certainly didn’t invest time, money, and tons of dedication in creating my business, just to be another scented candle business in town. I want to be unique. I want to be perceived as unique. I want to connect with the right people and I want the right people to have a certain experience when interacting with my business. From my fonts and colors, to my product packaging, to the emails I write during communication process, to why I chose each scent, to the colors that will go with each candle, to the feedback form I will ask my client to fill out, everything… when everything is together, it is branding.

Branding is how I go beyond being just another business; it is how I become memorable!
