"When Mentor's Belief Becomes Yours" - Dayna Martinez

Dayna Martinez joins us as she talks about the importance her mentors had on her and here experiences pursuing a Phd, being a SHPEtina, and moving from one place to the other.


Dayna currently serves as a Director of Research & Innovation at SHPE. In this role, she oversees the Equipando Padres program, Noche de Ciencias, as well as different aspects of research and data analysis.

An industrial engineer by training, before joining SHPE, Dayna was a faculty member in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at Northeastern University in Boston, MA after working at their Healthcare Systems Engineering Institute (HSyE) as a post-doctoral research fellow.

Native from San Juan, Puerto Rico, Dayna graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus (¡Colegio!) and then she completed a master’s and PhD degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Being Hispanic and an engineer herself, Dayna has a passion for increasing Hispanic representation in STEM. She currently lives with her husband Andrés, their two sons David and Sebastián, and their miniature schnauzer Lucca in Winter Garden, Florida.

Sara Gonzalez Henao started her academics pursuing a career in medicine. She attended the University of Florida where she obtained her first bachelor's degree in Biology. Sara later went on to pursue her master's in Biomedical Sciences. After a year of working in the medical field, Sara realized the financial and time commitment necessary for the career. She decided to go back to school and pursue a career in Engineering. Sara is currently in her last year, studying Mechanical Engineering and interning at Lockheed Martin as a manufacturing engineering intern.

Jorge and Sofia join the podcast to talk about their first exposure to SHPE in high school. They talk about getting a head start in their college prep and what it was like transitioning from high school to university. They also share insight on their first conference experiences and what it is like to find a job today with the world being how it is. 

Jorge Moros is a 3rd year Industrial and Systems Engineering Student at the University of Florida. Jorge first joined SHPE in his sophomore year of high school at Cypress Bay High School’s SHPE Jr. Chapter. Since then, Jorge has been involved in SHPE and currently serves as SHPE UF’s Vice President of External Affairs.

Sofia Serna is a 3rd year Civil Engineering student at the University of Florida. She first joined SHPE her sophomore year of high school in 2016 at Cypress Bay High School's SHPE Jr. Chapter. Since then, she has continuously been active in the organization and currently serves as SHPE UF's Vice President of Marketing.

She is a driven and open-minded individual who enjoys using her interdisciplinary background and skills to contribute to the advancement of the exciting world of electric vehicles. Manuela graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2021 with two Bachelor's Degrees (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering). While in school, Mamuela completed 10 internships, one co-op, and a 3-semester research experience. She was also heavily involved with different engineering societies such as FES, SWE, and SHPE. During her free time, she enjoys brewing beer, cooking, and practicing yoga!
