The Corrigan Cast

The Corrigan Cast

By Brendan Corrigan
The Corrigan Cast, presented by Brendan 'Wrong Way' Corrigan, is the "brother podcast" of The Colombia Cast, https://www.spreaker.com/show/the-colombia-cast, and has been created because of recording restrictions at Semana magazine due to coronavirus, covid-19.
These podcasts take a unique, usually light-hearted look at various aspects of life in Colombia and the region in general, as well as current affairs around the world. They make for fun (usually!), interesting listening!

#Colombia's under-pressure President Iván Duque could put his unpopularity to the only test that matters by calling an election — if the country had a parliamentary system in place that is. Colombia's Tourism Minister on covid supports, foreign visitors & Medellín's prostitution 'cancer'
Colombia's Vice Minister for Tourism, Julián Guerrero Orozco, discusses the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on tourism in the country and the various government measures introduced to help the sector. Highlighting the supports already in place, the Vice Minister states that 'there has to be a limit at some point because it cannot go on endlessly ... I would dare say that probably no other economic sector in Colombia has received more benefits than the tourism sector.' In relation to international visitors, he says that while numbers will most likely remain low for the coming months, foreign tourists are still a high priority, with digital nomads being a potentially important group to attract to Colombia. Outside of the pandemic, Mr Guerrero acknowledges the 'huge problem' of prostitution and sex tourism, particularly underage sex workers in the centre of the country's second city, Medellín. Describing it as 'a cancer', he says that his department and other state and regional authorities 'are trying our best to combat this crime.' (For some background to Medellín's prostitution problem, read https://wwcorrigan.blogspot.com/2019/10/medellins-plaza-putaero.html). ***** If you haven't already subscribed to this channel, please do by simply clicking the button above. Daniel Coronell on dating Duque's sister, unmasking Uribe, Petro's problems & Vicky Dávila's Semana
Renowned Colombian journalist Daniel Coronell joins us for a discussion ranging from the Hispanic influence in US politics and an "exclusive"  revelation of his love affair with President Iván Duque's sister to the need for a strong centrist candidate to emerge ahead of next year's presidential election in Colombia and his controversial leaving of  Semana magazine. Before delving into Colombian politics,  Coronell gives us his reaction to Joe Biden's winning of the White House and why it's wrong to view Latino voters in the US as a homogeneous block. As for matters in his homeland, the Miami-based Bogotano is less than impressed with President Iván Duque's performance and reveals, somewhat embarrassingly considering his political outlook, that he once dated Duque's sister. Looking ahead to Colombia's 2022  presidential election, Coronell explains why he hopes it doesn't become a  left-right shoot-out as it did in 2018. If it does, he fears that what he calls former president Álvaro Uribe Vélez's 'puppet candidate' will win again. With that in mind, he stresses the importance of an appealing centrist candidate — not Sergio Farjado, by the way — to emerge in the coming months. Finally, he talks about his departure from Semana in April 2020 after 15 years as a columnist with the publication and he finishes up with some sound advice for budding  journalists. ***** Watch a video version of this podcast at https://youtu.be/ZsWTBwGXRXY. ***** Check out the Wrong Way Corrigan blog at https://wwcorrigan.blogspot.com/. ***** Outro  music: Master of the Feast by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a  Creative Commons Attribution licence  (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source:  http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1400019  Artist: http://incompetech.com/

Dr Jay Bhattacharya on covid controls, vaccine priority, failing our elderly & Tony Fauci's myopia
Co-author of the controversial Great Barrington Declaration, Dr Jay  Bhattacharya, tells us why he still thinks focused protection is the wisest coronavirus-containment strategy and that eradicating covid-19 should not be the primary focus. The Stanford University professor of medicine explains how we have to prepare to live with the virus for a period of time in what he describes will be a 'half-and-half world' between those vaccinated and those still waiting for their jab. As director of Stanford's Center for the Demography and Economics of  Health and Aging, he tells us that covid was a 'stress test' for how we deal with our ever-growing elderly population and that we have failed this test badly. Speaking about the man who many in the USA regard as a hero in this pandemic, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and now also President Biden's Chief Medical Advisor, Dr Anthony Fauci, Dr Bhattacharya claims Fauci's neglect of other public health issues has been an 'abdication of responsibility'. ***** For a YouTube version of this video, go to https://youtu.be/ZSb8VnG4nPs. Peter Hitchens on Anglican virtues, Japanese wisdom, lockdown lunacy, drug dopes & Venezuela
'The whole of the formerly Christian world is now living in the afterglow of Christianity but it doesn't last forever and what follows it will be, to me, quite alarming.' This is one of a number of concerns for the future of humanity the outspoken author and journalist Peter Hitchens shares with us. In a wide-ranging discussion, he also tells us how his rejoining of the Anglican Church was the perfect antidote to his years as a revolutionary socialist. As regards the imposition of lockdowns to control the spread of coronavirus, he says the evidence simply isn't there that they actually work. What's more, he argues that the costs of such measures are enormous across a whole range of areas. In relation to the illegal drug trade, he says the issue has to be tackled in the consumer countries but very few developed nations are properly doing this. Finally, he tells us that Venezuela's current problems are best solved by Venezuelans themselves. **** Watch a video version of this podcast at https://youtu.be/Nuzm8OkYMyE. **** Check out the Wrong Way Corrigan blog at https://wwcorrigan.blogspot.com/. **** Outro music: Master of the Feast by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1400019 Artist: http://incompetech.com/

Going coca loca down in Colombia with Ocean Malandra
Considering the bloody damage the cocaine trade inflicts on Colombia, many locals are loath to talk positively about the plant from which the drug is derived, coca. However, that might be slowly changing as people learn more about the reputed health benefits of the leaf. Journalist and writer Ocean Malandra is very much in the coca-as-super-food camp and he joins us to explain why he believes it doesn't deserve its negative image. The Viva Effect in Colombia and Latin America, with Rupert Stebbings
The arrival of low-cost carrier Viva Colombia, now Viva Air, to South America has played a major role in changing the aviation sector in the region. In this episode, we speak to Rupert Stebbings, author of The Viva Effect, a new book detailing how the airline's original founders overcame many obstacles to finally get their project, um, off the ground (sorry!). Once in the air, we learn how it was far from an easy ride to keep Viva flying high but — the pandemic notwithstanding — the company now seems to be cruising, with the doyen of low-cost carriers, Ireland's Declan Ryan (see https://anchor.fm/brendan-corrigan/episodes/Declan-Ryan-Viva-Air-is-in-a-good-position--unlike-Avianca-ednc73), playing a major role in that. *Thanks to Viva Air, we have a free flight to give away. As you'll hear, the competition is open for 48 hours from the uploading of this episode and is available to Colombian-based listeners only. In a Facebook post, simply write your answer to the question Brendan asks in the podcast, tag  @wrongwaycorriganblog and include a link to this podcast episode/YouTube video. On a recent holiday to Cartagena, Cali-based Irishman Kevin McCaffrey fell victim to a scopolamine attack (for some background on that drug, see https://wwcorrigan.blogspot.com/2016/12/a-criminals-perfect-drug.html) The incident left him almost 60 million pesos (around 13,900 euros) less well off as his bank account was practically wiped clean. Colombian visa applications in coronavirus times, what you need to know, with Camilo Trujillo
