Ep. 186 - Gins and Rums with Comedians
Local comedians Dave Standal and Tim Jones join us on todays show to discuss a couple of their favorite beverages when out at a club. We compare a bar rail gin and tonic to one that we upscaled a little by adding better quality of the same exact ingredients, and a rum and coke with again slightly upscaled ingredients, and we compare the two against each other to see if it would be worth charging a few extra bucks per drink at the bar. The one caveat is that we used a 3:1 ratio of alcohol to mixers, and some bars just don't do that. In this episode we sample and review gin and tonics made with Karkov Dry London Gin with Schweppes tonic water facing off against Boreal Juniper Gin from Vikre Distillery paired with Fever Tree's Premium Indian tonic water. Then we dive into rum and cokes (or Cuba Libre's) with Captain Morgan and Diet Coke up against Real McCoy 12 year and Fever Tree's Distillers Cola. In this episode we sample and review Hofbrauhaus Seission Lager 3.3, a pair from Leinenkugels including their Session Helles and their Summer Shandy, Rolling Rock, DCR Brewing's Kolsch and the Gang, three from Portage including their Zero Day Lager, their Coffee Cake Blonde Ale, and their Abstract Substance Table Beer, also sampling O'Dell's Good Behavior Crushable IPA, and finally Mich Ultra Lime & Prickly Pear. Ep. 126 - Intro to Sherries
Sherry wine. What is it, besides being a cask that some distilled spirits finish their aging in? Besides being something your grandma cooked with when she was feeling adventurous during the holidays? Sherry is a fortified wine (like port) that can be both sweet (like cream or PX) or it can be dry (fino and manzanillo). The difference being that Port gets fortified while it is fermenting (the added brandy is what stops fermentation) versus  Sherries ferment completely before being fortified, so all the grape sugars get turned into alcohol. We sit down with Sean B from Bear Creek Winery to get his expertise on this style. We invite comedian Marquay on the show to round out this interesting panel, so enjoy the debauchery!  In this episode we sample and review the Fino and Amontillado from La Garrocha, Delicioso Manzanilla, the Don Nuno Oloroso and Capataz Andre Deluxe Cream from Lustau, and the El Maestro Sierra Pedro Ximenez. Stop by www.bearcreeknd.com to find out more about this local winery. You can check out Marquay at -----> The Cellar

Ep. 122 - Beer Mail from Wisconsin
What some people in the craft beer scene call a 'Porch Bomb' hit The Dungeon recently, and we had to share the wealth. A porch bomb is a shipment of brews that gets delivered to your front porch. It's usually where the delivery person leaves all your packages from amazon and whatnot, ya know? So we got these goodies courtesy of Alex, aka @beardhopsandbarley on instagram, including a very special homebrew that his 6-year-old son helped with the recipe for. We have special guests Andrew Karr (from Beer People), Don Kenna, and Blake Bushy on to join in on the bottleshare experience. Cheers from us to Hartland, WI buddy! In this episode we sample and review Badger State Brewing's Porte Des Morts coffee cocoa and maple porter, along with their Mega Mangoberry Udder Chaos Milkshake IPA, Pink Houses Blackcurrant Berliner Weisse and Imperial Set List DIPA both from Eagle Park Brewing, Strawberry Guava Shlushee from Lions Tail, and Raised Grain Brewing's Paradocs Red Imperial Red IPA. Ep. 121 - Vertical tasting with Beer People's Andrew Karr
So what's a vertical tasting, you may (or probably may not) ask? Well, let us tell you in this week's show! We invited Andrew Karr, an admin from the online group 'Beer People', onto to the show, and he brought us a vertical of Bent Paddle's Double Shot Double Black dating back to 2014 all the way up to 2018! VERY EXCITE! We get to know Andrew a little bit as we chat about Beer People's beginnings, his very popular yearly brackets, and of course a story about admining a page you might find amusing. In the second group we sip on Slane Irish Whiskey, Tullamore D.E.W. 12 year, Redbreast Single Pot Still 12 year, and West Cork's Glengariff Series Peat Charred Cask, which was super similar to episode 64's Bog Oak Charred from last year. In this episode we sample and review on the West Coast side Stone Brewing's Stone IPA, Firestone Walker's Union Jack, Junkyard's Gone Hollywood West Coast style IPA, and Surly's Axe Man IPA. Ep. 117 - Merlots
One of us watched the movie Sideways the other day, and hearing Paul Giamatti vocally express his distaste for Merlot wines, we decided to take that as a challenge and dive head first into some for ourselves! We invited Sean Ballinger from Bear Creek Winery over to get his expert opinion this 'controversial' style that saw a huge decrease in sales for a time thanks to that particular film. We even get our hands on some home made wine from Julie Wilson, and we couldn't be happier with this eclectic bunch we try today. In this episode we sample and review Dark Horse 2018 California Merlot, L'Agnostique French Merlot, Marco Felluga 2016 Italian Merlot, Chai De Bordes 2018 Bordeaux, Chateau Belles-Graves 2010 Grand Vin De Bordeaux, and a 2019 DeLaHunt Family Competition Wine Merlot. Ep. 116 - Sour Beers part 2
Sour beers are a divisive group of brews. You got your old school took-a-long-time-to-master sours like lambics n such, and you have the new school pack-as-much-fruit-as-possible-until-you-cant-taste-beer sours. Here, we finish the discussion about what sour beers are, the different kinds of sours, and how they're made. We invite Don back as a guest host, and our special guest, one-half of Beware The Vine (our theme song writers), Aimee Klein is here to hang out and possibly sing us some telegrams? In this episode we sample and review Stacked Deck Brewing's Astronaut Sauce with mango, guava, and pineapple, Oliphant Brewing's Squall Me Squishmael banana and almond sour, Junkyard Brewing's Nuance Strikes Back pink pepper and lemon zest saison sour and Muir Dry Hopped Foudre Sour along with their Bohemian Flex guava peach and tangerine gose, Rodenbach Grand Cru, and the ever present Duchesse De Bourgogne from Brouwerij Verhaeghe. Ep. 113 - NA Beers part 3
Dry January. Starting on the 1st and going without alcohol of any kind until February 1st. That idea is catching on globally, and for some it's a way to hit the reset button, make some pandemic-inspired resolutions, and find new ways to relax and destress. Starting in 2013 in the UK with around 4,000 people, it has now reached millions of folks who are just wanting to make some healthier choices for a month. In this episode, good ol' guest #2 Ben is back to hang with the BBR crew. Today we sample and review the Citra Lager, IPA, Black Ale, and Coffee Stout from Hairless Dog brewing, and follow it up at the end with Lagunitas Brewing's IPNA. Ep. 112 - Sorta Spumantes?
We know we should have put out this episode on champagnes/sparkling wines two weeks ago, but things have been hectic and busy at the BBR studio. So instead we release today's show in celebration of heading into year three of us telling dad jokes, learning new things, and generally getting a bit tipsy with you our listeners! We even harken back to our first year and get one of the BBR founders Andrea Anderson back on the show, along with our lovely guest #2 Ben Revier. We had the intention of doing just spumantes, but then we did a little bit of research and realized how laughable that was. BBR crew got through it only slightly scathed, but there's just something about sparkling wines that gets everyone in a giggly mood. Today we sample and review J. Roget Spumante, Fitvine prosecco spumante brut, Risata Moscato d'Asti DOCG, Chandon Sweet Star, and Moet's Moet & Chandon Nectar Imperial. Ep. 110 - Pastry Stouts
Well folks, it's definitely winter time here in the upper midwest of the US, because this past week we finally got our first blizzard of the year. And what do you do when it's cold as hell out? You snuggle in for some tasty brews by your partner, and bake up some holiday cookies or treats, all while sitting in front of a nice fire. One of the few good things we like about this season is the robust, hearty flavor of stouts and porters. On this episode, we wanted to take a closer look at the sweeter side of this fine beer, and dive into pastry stouts. In this show we sample and review six by Drekker Brewing: Bourbon Barrel Aged Flizzard with the variants of Oreo, Snickers, and Butterfinger, followed by their What Lies Beneath Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with cacao, coffee, and vanilla, and the variant with Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple Syrup. The coffee in these last two was provided by the cats at Thunder Coffee, and the maple syrup that came out of those said barrels was delicious as well! We also taste Drekker's Smooth Or Die Peanut Butter Milk Stout. Lastl but not least is Stone Brewing's Xocoveza imperial stout with chocolate, coffee, pasilla peppers, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Check out Thunder coffee at https://thunder.coffee/ , and check out the Vistas at https://thevistas.bandcamp.com/ They deserve our support.
